When Woody Harrelson was first offered a major part in War for the Planet of the Apes, he had visions of stepping into the skin of a primate.
Then he realized he was being asked to play the Colonel, an iron-fisted, ruthless soldier brought in to tamp down the now hyper-intelligent apes waging war with mankind.
The 55-year-old actor admits he was a bit chagrined. “I tried anything and everything to get them to come around, but they told me I was playing a human,” he explains, tongue in cheek, during a recent chat at a posh Manhattan hotel. Today in movie news: retirements, creative differences, and tons of behind-the-scenes featurettes. Check it out below!
Last night, we heard that legendary method actor Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting. The There Will Be Blood star has three Oscars and an almost unparalleled filmography. He's widely considered one of our best actors of all time, which is why most have been devastated by this news. While we're hoping Daniel changes his mind at some point in the future, we can at least look forward to seeing him in what will apparently be his last role, as a fashion designer in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, due out later this year.
Sad news in the Star Wars world, as we learned that the directors of the new Han Solo prequel film, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, have left the project due to creative differences. The 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie filmmakers were likely bringing a more comedic approach to the film, as that is their forte. We're curious about how this will affect the prequel, which has been in production for some time now. Word is that Lucasfilm is looking to replace the duo with filmmaker Ron Howard.
We've got a new featurette from the film Thank You For Your Service, which stars Miles Teller as a soldier suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The film also stars Haley Bennett and Amy Schumer. Check out the behind the scenes look below!
We're super pumped for War for the Planet of the Apes, which is getting stellar early reviews. Today a new featurette dropped, which highlights Andy Serkis' amazing motion-capture performance and the incredible visual effects used in the film. Check it out!
It's apparently the day of featurettes, as we have a third behind the scenes look, this time at the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049. If what you saw in the trailer blew your mind, there are even more visuals to feast your eyes on in the video below. Blade Runner 2049 sees Ryan Gosling as a new blade runner named K who discovers a long-kept secret that could plunge society into chaos. This leads him to finding Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for almost thirty years. Check it out below!
Last but certainly not least, we are enjoying this photo sent out by Robert Downey Jr. on the set of Avengers: Infinity War, that has Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wong and The Hulk sharing a meal. It also gives us a little glimpse at some new costumes, and is obviously getting us super pumped for the new film.

Film, TV and games companies have big plans for legendary tights-wearer Robin Hood. Here’s our primer on all the new versions…
Note: we've taken images from old Robin Hood projects because these new films and things, um, don't exist yet. Maximum geek points to whoever can remember what they're all from.
You don’t need us to remind you, but these days Hollywood and TV executives seem to have one target in mind – big franchises, hopefully with spin-offs and tie-ins galore across all possible forms of media.
An interesting consequence of all this is that the entertainment industry has begun looking beyond capes and cowls in their ‘what can we make a franchise out of?’ discussions. ‘What about other sorts of legendary characters?’ you can imagine them asking, before a big eureka moment… ‘What about Robin bloody Hood?!’
Almost simultaneously, it seems like every studio in Hollywood has latched...

Only one week left before Christmas.
Now it’s crunch time to get those holiday gifts and stocking stuffers on a short notice. And these Blu-rays will make fine gifts for any film aficionado.
Since it is the last minute gift ideas—we’re keeping this list to something simple and not those expensive collector’s edition or boxed sets. However, we do want the best Blu-rays that features the movie, downloadable and the best extra features out there.
So check out the following recommendations.
For the action movie lovers:

Gozilla fans can rejoice with the mega monster taking on creatures in the middle of San Francisco. Sure there’s a human story to it, but Godzilla should be the focus. Nonetheless the fight scene is impressive and far better than the forgettable one starring Matthew Broderick. The extra features have a few 1950s government...

All challengers fell under the mighty force of Andy Serkis in motion capture pajamas.
It was a battle of sequels this weekend, with returning champion Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes throwing down against The Purge: Anarchy. However, despite a commendably strong showing from The Purge, it still couldn't take down the mighty force of Andy Serkis's ape army.
While horror fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of The Purge: Anarchy – the film that capitalizes on the brilliant premise that all crime is legal for one night of the year, which was established in the first film and then immediately squandered on a mediocre home invasion plot – watching psychos murder each other in the streets of La didn't carry as much water as watching psycho primates murder humans all across the country.

If this weekend’s number one movie Dawn of the Planet of the Apes — the second entry in the rebooted Apes franchise — has a spiritual sibling in the original series of films, it is 1972′s Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. While Conquest was the fourth movie in the franchise to arrive in cinemas it is, like Dawn, the second according to the interior timeline of its series and, again like director Matt Reeves’ new film, features an apocalyptic showdown between apes and humans. Thus, it seems appropriate that this weekend Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comprehensively...

Audiences went bananas on Friday for the latest sequel in the simian saga, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" ruled the box office with a $27.7 million opening. "Dawn" is on its way to a big $70 million weekend debut, placing it well ahead of its predecessor, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which bowed to $54.8 million in 2011. That film went on to gross $176.6 million domestically. "Dawn" stars Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Andy Serkis. Michael Bay's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" came in a distant second place, picking up another $4.8 million. The film has so far earned a huge $197.3 domestically, and should be passing the $200 million mark sometime today. The fourth film in the series, it stars Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor and Stanley Tucci. The Melissa McCarthy comedy "Tammy" picked up another $4 million for the bronze. Its North American total stands at a decent $48.4 million. Holdover "22 Jump Street,...

Are you getting restless about all these halfway posts? We're almost done. The Power of List compels me. There's one more halfway post to go that's basically 'The Oscar Charts are Updated!' as the coding problem I mentioned is fixed and the updates are happening behind the scenes as you read this. We must get all this halfway business behind us by Saturday morning so that we can ape out all weekend with Andy Serkis & Co and start this second half of the year off right.

Best Leading Actress: Keira Knightley does her most relaxed and fluid work ever in Begin Again as a musician at a crossroads, never letting any one aspect of the character's situation pigeonhole her emotional responses; Agata Kulesza is an abrasive and evasive presence in her first scenes in Ida as a cynical woman who is...

When 20th Century Fox released Planet Of The Apes on February 8, 1968, audiences saw Pierre Boulle’s novel come to life on the big screen through futuristic sets and costumes, John Chambers’ Oscar-winning makeup and a percussion heavy score by Jerry Goldsmith. Shot by cinematographer Leon Shamroy, CGI wasn’t even a thought yet.
As noted in the documentary Behind the Planet of the Apes (narrated by Roddy McDowall “Cornelius”), the special effect shot of the half-buried Statue of Liberty at the end of the film was completed by adding a matte painting with existing cliffs. The iconic shot looking down at Taylor (Charlton Heston) was done from a 70-foot scaffold, angled over a 1/2-scale papier-mache model of the Statue.
Jump ahead 30 plus years to where the apes and scenes will be created through the Oscar-winning visual effects house Weta Digital.

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier putting up huge numbers, it may seem like we're already in the midst of the Summer box office season. Formally, though, the season kicks off on May 2nd with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and then runs through the end of August. As is tradition here at Box Office Mojo, we're starting the season off with a list of predictions for the highest-grossing movies. Titles are ranked based on their domestic box office forecast, though foreign predictions are included as well. The Summer will likely be dominated by high-profile sequels like How to Train Your Dragon 2, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There's still plenty of room for original titles to break out, though, and comedies in particular should have a strong showing this year.Overall, though, the crop doesn't...

Tomorrow will bring us my top ten most anticipated movies of 2014, but we must first look at the ten films that fell just out of reach, though I must say this is a rather impressive grouping and it's rather obvious how much more excited I am about each one of these lists the closer we get to the top. Today's list includes a couple of comedies, my highest ranking studio franchise feature, a directorial debut we've all been looking forward to, an On Demand release and more than a few directors whose names alone get us into the theater. Check it out and if you missed either of my two previous installments there is a navigation directly below and on the final page of this post. Big, dumb cop (Channing Tatum) and squat, dorky cop (Jonah Hill) return to wreck more havoc. 21 Jump Street, a reboot of the TV show that made Johnny Depp's name, saw detectives Jenko and Schmidt pretend to be high school students in order to bust a drug ring. 20th Century Fox has released a brand new menacing “Caesar” poster for their upcoming film, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. Set for a new release date of July 11th, 2014, director Matt Reeves’ latest chapter in my favorite franchise is one of the most anticipated films next year.
Be sure to check out the full poster scroll Here, which includes a new look at 3 additional apes that are ready for war. Stay tuned for the brand new trailer coming out next Wednesday, December 18th and believe me, you won’t want to miss this one.
The last time we saw the mighty Caesar, he and his band of Simian friends were making their way to the Redwoods to set up permanent residence. Jump 10 years ahead.
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a group of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.

Another day, another Comic-Con schedule! Are you ready to plan out our Saturday at this years convention!? Once again there's a ton of great panels going on including Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, The Hobbit, Marvel TV, Django Unchained, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and more!
Saturday has shaped up to be a hell of a great day for those of you attending Comic-Con. I've put *** next to all of the panels that we want to attend, but like every year, I'm sure we'll be covering a lot more stuff.
We'll be wearing our GeekTyrant shirts, so if you see us walking around San Diego and the convention center, please stop and and say hi! We'd love to meet our readers. We will also be holding our annual meet-up on Wednesday night before the crazy geek storm.
Check out the schedule below and let us know what panels you'll be attending,...

Maybe Jonah Hill just got lucky. If his most recent turn as Saturday Night Live host had been during any other week than the post-Lindsay Lohan debacle he might be catching far more heat for last night’s rocky episode. Then again, even in comparison to Lohan’s episode, which had unfairly high expectations to begin with, Hill likely still wouldn’t rank as one of the season’s worst. (Anna Faris and Charles Barkley still have, er, bragging rights to that.)
That’s not to say it will even come close to a season best. The episode, through no fault of Hill’s,...

Sacha Baron Cohen's 'Dictator' stunt has us wishing we could see Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Johnny Depp in costume.

"The Dictator" has spoken. After a flap erupted over Sacha Baron Cohen's plans to walk the red carpet at Sunday's Oscars in the character of Admiral Gen. Shabazz Aladeen, the leader of the fictional Republic of Wadiya, the comedian responded by issuing a stern warning to the "Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Zionists."
And while the fake war of words is all in good fun (and publicity), it got us thinking: What if some of Hollywood's other biggest stars decided to ride Cohen's medal-bedecked coattails and use movie's biggest night to drum up a bit of hype for their projects?
And so, we give you our wish list of other characters we hope to see come...
