The Murder on the Orient Express twist ending explained that this is not just an Agatha Christie murder mystery but quite possibly her very best. The film is a twisted take on the genre she owned that pushes iconic detective Hercule Poirot to the limits of his morals. Kenneth Branagh's 2017 movie, which he both directed and starred in, is a glossy, star-studded, but mostly faithful take. The first film of the new Agatha Christie franchise brought Hercule Poirot back into the public eye.
Murder of the Orient Express introduces viewers to Poirot in Jerusalem, where he's solving a crime with typically Sherlockian logic, but that's all preamble to the real case. Forced to travel back to England to help with a previous investigation, he takes the Orient Express along with a surprisingly large group of other passengers, considering it's in the height of winter. Things immediately feel off, and...

Sean Connery and Michael Caine co-starred in A Bridge Too Far, a massively underrated war epic that received mixed reviews from critics on its initial release, but deserves a lot more love. Connery is best known for playing James Bond in six official movies (and one unofficial one), but he was a screen legend outside his connection to the role of 007. He starred in a wide range of movies, from the psychological thriller Marnie to the Agatha Christie whodunit Murder on the Orient Express. He worked with such legendary directors as Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, and John Huston.
These days, Caine is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Christopher Nolan, having played Alfred Pennyworth in The Dark Knight trilogy and Professor John Brand in Interstellar. Caine played his own iconic spy character, Harry Palmer, across five movies, and starred in such classics as Get Carter, The Italian Job, and Hannah and Her Sisters,...

Steven Spielberg had only one actor in mind to play the role of Harrison Ford’s dad role, an eccentric medieval literature professor, in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Spielberg was a fan of Sean Connery’s work in James Bond films. Connery initially turned down the role as he didn’t want to play any more franchise roles after Bond. However, he went on to have a lot of fun in the role.

Ford and Connery faced a few problems on set and the Murder on the Orient Express actor had a particularly creative solution for one problem. The film was one of the well-received films in the franchise, with particular praise for its humor, emotional themes, and Ford & Connery’s performances.

In 2017, on the press circuit for his first Hercule Poirot film Murder on the Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh was asked by French newspaper Le Figaro to name his three favourite Agatha Christie Novels. The actor-director picked Orient Express, of course, and two others: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, published in 1926, and, published a decade later in 1936, Murder in Mesopotamia.
“I like one, Roger Ackroyd, because it’s deep in the heart of England so it’s classic Christie, village green…,” said Branagh. “And the other one because it’s in a super-exotic archaeological dig and she knew those really well so you feel in both of those cases amazing detail. She knows what she’s writing about.”
Christie would know the setting for Murder in Mesopotamia, an archaeological dig in Iraq, having spent several months on expeditions in Iraq and Syria with her second husband, archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan.

The year saw a lift from November box office grosses as this past month was only the third time ever November receipts totaled more than $1 billion, led by Disney and Marvel's release of Thor: Ragnarok, which delivered nearly 28% of the month's total. Heading into the November, 2017 was trailing 2016 by 5.3%, but coming out of it this year was 4.4% behind 2016 thanks to what was the third largest November ever and a 5.1% improvement over November last year. Disney led the month — after not having released a film since Cars 3 in mid-June — with two new wide releases in Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok and Pixar's Coco, both of which have been overwhelmingly successful. Ragnarok was the month's highest grossing title with $281.7 million and Coco delivered the fourth largest three- and five-day Thanksgiving weekend opening ever and generated over $82 million in its first nine days in release. Coco's total has since climbed over $135 million domestically and over $400 million globally,...

You won’t find a sharper contrast in period costume design than the farm life of “Mudbound” vs. the high fashion of “Murder on the Orient Express.” The former, directed by Dee Rees, is a sprawling saga about two families, one black, one white, in the 1940s Mississippi Delta. And the latter, helmed by Kenneth Branagh (who also plays the wildly mustachioed Hercule Poirot), is a stylish, 1934 murder mystery aboard the eponymous luxury locomotive.
Tackling Parallel Settings for “Mudbound”
There were two challenges for costume designer Michael T. Boyd (“Bessie,” “We Were Soldiers,” “Gettysburg”): Authenticating clothing for parallel settings on the Mississippi Delta and in aerial and tank battles during World War II. “It stretches your creativity,” said Boyd, who was working on a small budget for the indie feature distributed by Netflix.
“You’re trying to realistically recreate the atmosphere,” Boyd added. “That was my mission on this show.

Your aunts and grandmas were right all along, Agatha Christie is cool. Actually, a couple The Playlist staffers are also secret/not-so-secret fans of the famed mystery writer. At any rate, she’s enjoying a renaissance thanks to “Murder On The Orient Express,” which has quietly circled the globe to the tune of $148 million and counting. Nope, it’s not superhero numbers, but evidently, 20th Century Fox has deemed the figure for the $55 million movie good enough to start working on a sequel.

It's been revealed that Twentieth Century Fox is developing a sequel to Murder on the Orient Express and that sequel will be based on Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile. The studio has haired Orient Express screenwriter Michael Green to write the script for the film.
Director Kenneth Branagh is expected to return to helm the film and he will reprise his role of detective Hercule Poirot. I actually really enjoyed Murder on the Orient Express and I'm happy to hear that we will be getting another film in the franchise.
Death on the Nile was published in 1937, and the plot "places Poirot on a vacation in Egypt, discovering a murder on the Nile River as a result of a love triangle gone bad." I'm sure that the studio will once again bring together an all-star cast for the film.

Chris here. Has everyone caught up to Murder on the Orient Express yet? For yours truly, it was set exactly in the spot in Europe that Clueless said we might be "whelmed" and our Eric Blume felt the same. But that hasn't stopped audiences from turning it into a modest hit, resulting in a global take of over $150 million - and that's enough for Fox to officially kick off a mini-franchise.
The new Agatha Christie Poirot films are keeping in line with the adaptations of the 70s, so next up will be Death on the Nile - expect Evil Under the Sun afterwards should Nile be a success too. Branagh is expected to return as director and star, and Orient Express's screenwriter Michael Green will be back as well. Get ready for more CGI exotic locales and modes of transportation because this one is set on a steamboat in Egypt.

Hercule Poirot may be the greatest detective on the face of the planet, but even he is no match for the curious case of the Murder on the Orient Express.
Lifted from the pages of Agatha Christie’s timeless masterclass, 20th Century Fox and writer-director Kenneth Branagh recently brought us a new and modern take on the iconic thriller, where Branagh took point as the aforementioned Poirot. While aboard the titular, serpentine vessel, our astute lead found himself in the thick of a widespread conspiracy upon discovering that businessman Samuel Edward Ratchett (Johnny Depp) had been murdered in one of the cabins. Cue the speculation.
What followed was a whodunnit of epic proportions, but unfortunately, the film’s enviable cast couldn’t quite save it, as critics slammed the pic, with our own Matt Donato calling it “an antique mystery that chugs along at 5-miles an hour without any turns...

Level of Difficulty: 2/10. Ok, it’s not exactly hard being pampered on the ultimate luxury train. But hey, it’s not easy to walk on a rocking train, especially after a couple of the signature Guilty 12 cocktails. (The dozen ingredients? They’re a mystery, of course.)

Thor: Ragnarok delivered an expected #1 finish in its second weekend at the domestic box office, pushing the film's domestic total ahead of both the first and second Thor films after just ten days in release. However, just as much a story are the strong openings for a batch of newcomers, both wide and and limited, as Paramount's Daddy's Home 2 and Fox's Murder on the Orient Express both delivered ahead of expectations and Fox Searchlight's Three Billboards averaged $80,000 per theater over its limited bow. Sherlock Holmes was successfully given the cinematic and television treatment this last century, both of which been met with hardcore followings and a renewed appetite for the old-school whodunit. Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlocks were both oddly different interpretations of the famous detective, but the fresh and personal touch both actors brought to the characters made them likably inventive.
However, Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, equally legendary to Holmes–at least in my book–has not been given the same treatment in recent popular culture. So, it was with great anticipation that Kenneth Branagh has adapted what might just be Christie’s most famous novel, “Murder on the Orient Express.” The cast assembled for this cinematic affair is justifiably impressive, with Branagh himself playing the crucial role of Poirot as he interrogates his way through a steaming train, looking for a murderer.

First published in 1934, Agatha Christie's novel, Murder on the Orient Express, is considered one of the most suspenseful and thrilling mysteries ever written. The book, which concerns the murder of a wealthy businessman aboard a luxury train, features one of Christie's most famous & long-lived characters, detective Hercule Poirot. The Belgian sleuth with a magnificent mustache has appeared in more than 30 novels and 50 short stories and has been portrayed on radio, in film, and on TV by various actors, including Albert Finney, Sir Peter Ustinov, Tony Randall, Alfred Molina, Orson Welles, and David Suchet. Now, 83 years after its debut, Murder on the Orient Express receives another lavish, star-studded film adaptation, this time by actor-turned-director Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein), who also stars. If you haven't read Christie's novel or seen one of its many previous adaptations, Orient Express begins in 1930s Istanbul with Poirot (Branagh) meeting up with his old friend,...

Kenneth Branagh’s Murder On The Orient Express – 2017’s take on Agatha Christie’s 1934 dead-body caper – reminds of a cinematic time capsule that was dug up and never dusted off. It’s not the first, nor even fourth time Christie’s words would be uttered by actors aboard their high-class locomotive prison. Sidney Lumet’s 1974 classic shines with old-Hollywood prestige, Alfred Molina stars in a 2001 modern-day take, Japan televised a 2015 miniseries event overseas – so how would Branagh differentiate? Apparently by staying devout to Christie’s 1930s aesthetic, conception and tone. A relic whose connotation translates to “Back in my day!,” rolling slowly down the tracks for an almost two-hour whodunit that runs out of steam far before reaching desired conclusions.

A movie about how much of a royal pain in the ass it was to kill someone before civilians had easy access to Ar-15s, Kenneth Branagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express” is an undercooked Christmas ham of a movie, the kind of flamboyant holiday feast that Hollywood doesn’t really serve anymore. Arrestingly sumptuous from the very first shot (and filmed in glorious 65mm), this cozy new riff on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery is such an old-fashioned yarn that it could have been made back in 1934 if not for all the terrible CGI snow and a late-career, post-disgrace Johnny Depp performance that reeks of 21st century fatigue. Indeed, it’s hard to overstate just how refreshing it feels to see a snug, gilded piece of studio entertainment that doesn’t involve any spandex. Or, more accurately, how refreshing it would have felt had Branagh understood why Christie...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Doubly dated, lacking in humor and subtext, its impressive cast deliberately underutilized, this is little more than an exercise in gorgeous production design. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): saw no need for another production
I can’t recall if I’ve read the source material (I might have as a teenager in my classic-mystery phase, but if so, clearly it didn’t stick)

Here’s the biggest mystery of director and star Kenneth Branagh’s opulent period mounting of the 1934 Agatha Christie novel: Why? Who was clamoring for yet another retelling of a story that has been told onscreen — both the big and small screens — several times already, and as recently as 2010 in the beloved television series starring David Suchet as Hercule Poirot? Why bother to tell this story...
I’m “biast” (con): saw no need for another production
I can’t recall if I’ve read the source material (I might have as a teenager in my classic-mystery phase, but if so, clearly it didn’t stick)

Kenneth Branagh’s lavish, all-star take on the Agatha Christie classic is endearingly nostalgic
Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel is a juicy fruitcake of a film (or, perhaps more accurately, a Belgian iced bun: a nostalgic pleasure, goes down easy, irresistible on a Sunday afternoon). Everyone’s favourite mustachioed detective, Hercule Poirot (Branagh himself), has decided to take a holiday to read Charles Dickens and enjoy three days on the Orient Express “without care, concern or crime”. But, as we know, no good deed goes unpunished, and a murder inevitably occurs on board. Poirot sets about solving the delicious, chewy whodunnit, each of the train’s curio passengers a potential suspect.

We know there was murder — but was there also romance on the Orient Express?
Daisy Ridley, 25, and Tom Bateman, 28, could be more than just friends after costarring together in Murder on the Orient Express.
Asked if any tight bonds formed on set, producer Judy Hofflund told People, “Something kinda happened with Tom and Daisy right?”
She added with a laugh, “That’s public news. I should keep my mouth shut. Oh well.”
Bateman demurred when asked if sparks flew with any of his female costars, saying, “I’m absolutely not going anywhere near that! But nice try.”

Kenneth Branagh brings Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express back to the big screen. Here's our review...
When you’re telling a story on screen that’s been covered lots of times, to which many know the ending, the trick is in how you tell it. As director, Kenneth Branagh has been here many times before, most recently with his sumptuous staging of Cinderella. And he brings the same richness and sheer energy he injected that film with to his solid take on Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express.
The basics are in the title, of course. The ensemble board the Orient Express. There’s a murder. Poirot has to solve the case. As much as the film tries things around that core, the mystery stays at the heart of things. Although I did get the sense that Branagh expected half the film to already know whodunnit,...

First off, we Finally got to hear something about the project which until now was known as Untitled Han Solo Project. Well, we don’t have to resort to mysteriously calling it that anymore, because director Ron Howard took to Twitter today to confirm that the official title is Solo: A Star Wars Story. Alden Ehrenreich plays a young version of the space cowboy Harrison Ford made so famous, with Emilia Clarke, Paul Bettany, and Woody Harrelson also starring. It hits theatres May 25th.

A second full length trailer for Murder On The Orient Express has hit the internet. I for one believe it was Dame Judi Dench, in the caboose, with the candle stick.
More importantly then who may or may not be the killer, we are given our first look at Johnny Depp in the film through this new trailer. Playing the Gangster, Ratchett, Depp is poised to bring us one of his more subtle classic performances, rather then the outlandish Jack Sparrow role.
The trailer is full of intense shots of the train and a man with a gun. There's a scream, and announcement to the passengers that someone has been killed, and the detective lets us know, that everyone is a suspect. The investigation will not end, until the murderer is found, and the entirety of Imagine Dragons "Believer" is played. Check it out below.

Murder on the Orient Express is a film that is probably entering the “passion project” space, but Kenneth Branagh has a pretty good record with movies that might seem unnecessary or unmanageable. There are a lot of hurdles to overcome in putting this one on film again, and that’s after you get past reinventing something that had an unbeatable cast already. While new audiences will perhaps find much to love in a story that has sucked people in for years, you have to wonder how many times the indoctrinated can watch the same murder mystery.
In any event, the movie is finally giving us a feel for the film and letting us see some of the actors at work. While the cast has a lot of big names, all of whom will have some interesting work to do with these characters, Johnny Depp is in a particularly good place to show off his abilities,...

Patience, as they say, is a virtue.
When 20th Century Fox first announced a new, big-screen interpretation of Murder On the Orient Express, Agatha Christie’s classic whodunnit of 1934, Ridley Scott (Alien: Covenant) initially flirted with the director’s chair, before Kenneth Branagh ultimately landed the coveted gig.
That was in 2015, when it was also announced that Branagh would take charge as Hercule Poirot, the greatest detective on the face of the planet whose genius is matched only by his magnificent ‘tache. Fast forward to the present day and Branagh’s commitment to the adaptation has been rewarded with what is arguably the most impressive ensemble of 2017.
Largely set on board the titular Orient Express, his crime-thriller has cast Johnny Depp in the role of American businessman and tycoon Mr. Ratchett, whose murder sparks a full-blown investigation. To make matters worse, a relentless snowstorm causes the serpentine vessel to grind...

On Body and Soul is an urban pastoral. It’s a love story that unfolds both in a secret inner dreamscape and an outer world of ostensible normality – which is actually far more comically irrational. This duality could be the one hinted at in the title. But which is body and which soul? Where do we assume the spirituality and physicality are located? It’s not entirely clear.
The Hungarian film-maker Ildikó Enyedi won the Golden Bear in Berlin this year for this film, perhaps her most notable success since winning the Camera d’Or at Cannes in 1989 for My Twentieth Century, about identical twin sisters heading for an appointment with destiny and modernity aboard the Orient Express. Hercule Poirot may be the greatest detective on the face of the planet, but even he is no match for the curious case of the Murder on the Orient Express.
Lifted from the pages of Agatha Christie’s timeless masterclass, 20th Century Fox and writer-director Kenneth Branagh are bringing a new and modern take to the iconic thriller, with Branagh taking point as the aforementioned Poirot. While aboard the titular, serpentine vessel, our astute leads finds himself in the thick of a widespread conspiracy upon discovering that businessman Samuel Edward Ratchett (Johnny Depp) has been murdered in one of the cabins. If there’s one downside to the great news that Jodie Whittaker is joining Doctor Who as its first ever female Doctor this Christmas, it means that we don’t have much longer left with the amazing Peter Capaldi. The Scottish actor has proven himself born to play the part of the centuries-old Time Lord over the past three seasons and his performance has been reliably brilliant throughout.
There’s another important changeover to keep in mind, though, as this year’s Christmas special will also be the last episode helmed by Steven Moffat as showrunner after working on the hit series for six seasons. That’s a long time to spend on a project, especially one as time consuming as this, and the writer/director is clearly getting a bit emotional as his job comes to an end.

In the two-year hiatus between The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, many of the franchise’s leading players were kept busy through a series of equally enticing projects.
John Boyega, for instance, is one of the many stars set to appear in Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow’s biting true-life drama that chronicles the 12th Street riot of 1967, while Daisy Ridley will soon be under investigation as one of the prime suspects in the Murder on the Orient Express. Perhaps more so than most, and thanks to Josh Gad’s constant badgering, Ridley spent a fair chunk of the downtime between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi deflecting questions on Rey’s parentage and the meaning behind that evocative title. What began as a viral video between co-stars soon spawned an Internet meme, culminating in the launch of the sequel’s first teaser at Celebration back in April.
