Shaw Brothers jump right onto the '60s super spy wave of films that were spawned by the success of the Bond franchise with. Hei ying (The Black Falcon), featuring a bunch of tough dudes and beautiful dames jockeying for the leadership of The Black Falcon triad group.
Curiously written and directed by. Takumi Furukawa, although credited as. Tai Kao-Mei, there is a decidedly Japanese flavor to the clearly Chinese storyline. He brings a bit of the slightly gonzo yakuza film sensibility that was current in Japan at the time although there are also the obligatory gadgets to be amazed by to keep things hip. Paul Chang Chung is the ultra smoove private detective brought in to try to break up the gang that is harassing well-to-do businessmen which he does by getting together with the crime leader's daughter, Jenny Hu.
It's entertaining enough given what it is but is by no means must see cinema. Interesting sets and settings help to counterbalance some of the lackluster fight choreography (disappointing considering who made this). Jenny Hu does a nice job as the flighty rich kid although Chang Chung is a bit of a stiff, other Shaw regulars turn in adequate performances although the whole thing is pretty one dimensional.
