Setsuko Hara Shines In A Man's World

Setsuko Hara and her sister Kazuko Enami have a difficult situation at home. Their father keeps trying for the big deal and never succeeds, and takes it out on their stepmother, Yôko Mizumachi. Finally, they move the older woman into her own apartment and try to earn more money. Miss Mizumachi gets a job in the typist pool at the auto agency Miss Hara works at, and Miss Hara decides to become a saleswoman. There are issues, like the way the salesmen steal deals from each other, but the company's most successful salesman, Akira Tachibana, takes a friendly interest in her, coaches her on how to deal with the competition, and even lends her money, saying that a salesman always needs to look rich; it puts the customers at ease. Miss Hara begins to make sales, and the gossip about Tachibana and her increase. But as she becomes more successful, he draws away from her.

Osamu Fushimizu's movie takes full advantage of his star, as she gradually increases in ability and independence. There's lots of realistic-seeming detail as she learns about auto from the inside out, and gradually learns how to survive and prosper in a man's world, and what it costs... and whether it suits her to be a modern woman or not.
