The best part of this movie i the way it captures London in winter...not just the buildings but the spirit manages to enter the frame !! The movie is inspired from usual suspects with the hot scene of basic instinct thrown in for good measure... It is difficult to believe 20 billion pounds being transferred with no escort cars !!! but this movie wants you to believe that apart from a lot of stories with holes more than any pound of swiss cheese will have !!! Tanushree Dutta sure has it to make it big., hope she makes some good career choices...Irrfan, Arshad, Emraan( for a change no kisses !!) all OK, Anil simply doesn't know what over the top acting is all about... Sushma makes a debut rather late in her career and unless many of her scenes are in editing floor, it is rather a sad debut... The redeeming feature is the ending where it differs from usual suspects and the ending is actually a happy one at that !! 3 out of 5...

This terrible movie was made in 2005 n i put up a review in 2022 and it gets reported n deleted. That means fascist fanboys are at it again.
Burn pigs burn.
I saw this in 2005 in a theatre. This cannot be called a poor man's Usual Suspects cos it is a terrible movie with appalling direction.
I can't fathom how Emraan Hashmi, Arshad Warsi, Sunil Shetty n Irfan Khan agreed for this atrocious movie.
Did they not kno that it is a copy of Usual Suspects. Were they not aware of the pathetic director's behavior towards female actors. Abysmal copy of Usual Suspects.

Newcomer director Vivek Agnihotri took the plunge of directly ripping-off the Hollywood hit 'Usual Suspects' in Bollywood as the lame excuse for a movie called 'Chocolate'.
Nothing is in the right place in this movie. Be it acting, storytelling, hard-hitting dialogues or even the screenplay. No loose ends are tied in the end. No explanations are provided for the actions of the characters. We never get to know why do these five friends (Irfan Khan, Suniel Shetty, Emraan Hashmi, Arshad Warsi and Tanushree Dutta) keep committing one crime after another. No explanations have been provided for the eccentricities of the lawyer, Krish Pundit (played by Anil Kapoor). Why does the character of Monsoon Iyer (played by Sushma Reddy) acts like Anil Kapoor's Personal Assistant if she is a crime reporter? And Krish Pundit says that he doesn't care if the characters of Irfan Khan and Tanushree Dutta are guilty or innocent. Still, he wants them to tell him the true story linking them to the boat incident and truck robbery! After all, he is their lawyer and he's bound to fight for their cause even if they're lying to him or not saying anything at all.
Music is pleasing to the ears. 'Mummy ko nahi hai pata' and 'halka halka' are the picks of the lot. Editing could've been sharper.Probably the editor was sleeping throughout the whole movie. Cinematography is awesome. If 'Chocolate' scores in any department it would be in the cinematography department as the beauty of London and its winter had been captured to the fullest. Vivek Agnihotri should be applauded for attempting something different but the problem lies in his execution. He doesn't know how to tell a story.
'Chocolate' is the worst remake of 'Usual Suspects' which was a success at the box-office and was declared a classic. I would recommend that you rather borrow the DVD of 'Usual Suspects' instead.

I saw director Vivek Agnihotri saying that "this film you can show around the world and proudly say that this is Indian cinema... this film is for intelligent people...". i went to see and i found that its a DUBBED version of Usual Suspect.
after HUM TUM ( harry met sally), salam namaste( nine months)now it is CHOCOLATE (ususal Suspect). i don't understand the logic of these directors...i think Indian government should stop releasing English movies in India so we can feel bollywood movies are original, and we can save our money.
the answer of each director over this is same...its inspired...or ....its just coincident....well chocolate is not inspired it is clone of usual suspect. the director beat Mr. Deepak Tijori (KHAMOSH/IDENTITY). thats what i can say.

2 minutes into the movie, and you know that it is a lift(No, i wont use the word "remake" or "adapted from" because that's what it is, a lift) of "The Usual Suspects". When there was a buzz about "Chocolate" during the build up and ever since we heard about the movie, i expected something else but as it turns out, it's a rehash of the 1995 Hollywood flick. I am OKAY with adaptations and inspirations but what irks me is that they don't even acknowledge the supposed adaptation. Come to think of it, there's no "adaptation" here, it's plain lifting. The end comes as no surprise to anyone who's seen the original. I was also reading Mr. Taran Adarsh's review and believe it or not, even he seemed to like the idea of adapting, he "adapted" from James Berardinelli's review of The Usual Suspects! ("The movie borrows from dozens of sources -- Hitchcock, Scorsese, the Coen brothers and just about every master of the genre, past or present". Check this line out in James' review of the original).
I wont comment on the dialogues and screenplay since there's nothing new here. Anil Kapoor, as the egoistic lawyer, was over the top a few times and his voice-over kind of sounded affected ( "With every case i became smart, smarter, smartest"...cheesy) . Irrfan was expectedly the best among the lot and makes the movie watchable, if only because of his presence. He easily overshadows Anil in their confrontation scenes. His glowering eyes and perfectly restrained performance is a treat to watch. Here's an actor i'll go miles to watch. Arshad Warsi does good in the limited scope that he has. The rest of the cast are alright.
At the end of it, "Chocolate" is not an effort worthy of appreciation.

Please turn off the logical/critical part of your brain and you'll be ready to enjoy the movie. Compared to usual Bollywood standards, this is a slick flick with respect to editing, cinematography, sound, etc.
Of course, the "Usual Suspects" story has been adapted to suit current events with plenty of vague references to Al Qaeda thrown in, but don't watch the movie for the story. Watch it to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon, when you can't go out, and don't feel like reading a book.
Irfaan Khan should have been cast as Rocker. Sunil Shetty didn't look scary enough. Arshad Warsi did much better than his past roles. Tanushree Dutta is certainly one to look out for. A few more acting classes might help. Lastly, Sushma Reddy's role as an almost caricature-ish sidekick to Krishna Pandit didn't do justice to her talents. She will certainly do better to pick meatier roles.

Before I begin lashing out against this movie, I want to clarify that I am not fully against "Indianized" remakes of Hollywood movies - if done nicely and with some common sense, they can turn out to be decent affairs.
But Chocolate shamelessly treads the path of being a horrible movie that was blatantly taken piece by piece from a class act such as the Usual Suspects. Kaante had glimpses of other great Hollywood movies, but still had a "characer". Nothing here.
At the end of the movie, I was left wondering - was the director just an extra-ordinary idiot or was it just the outrageous murder of a great movie that left me pulling my own hair and cursing out loud.
Anil Kapoor - who is a brilliant actor, mind you - was totally wasted in the movie. Ditto for Irfan Khan - who has given some great performances in the past. Arshad Warsi is usually a delight to watch - but not here sirs! The only person for whom this piece of trash suits is Emran Hashmi - who was his terrible self in the movie.
Simply avoid this at all costs - you will be doing yourself a big favor.

This is the Best Indian Movie I saw this Year. The Story was perfect. You won't be able to Guess anything (if you haven't watched TUS)
Well basically I saw the movie last night. I couldn't really stop watching it. even though I had my Exams today.
But Once I reached the End I was Exceptionally satisfied with the End. However I started having a Bad feeling about the movie. I have this sort of feeling when I watched other movies too. Somehow I guessed that it was a clone of TUS though I never Saw TUS in my whole life but I am craving to watch the movie. (Just like the time I saw Saaya before Dragonfly) And Guess what. Today I was reading the Reviews and found many people saying it's a clone.
Anyways I would still recommend the movie to all Viewers Indian and foreign. It's really worth your money.

This is a really good thriller keeps you in suspense throughout the movie ending is shocking but the story could have had more if the ending were different this movie still has the type of stupidity but it is a genius there is good elements in this movie especially the character that Anil Kapoor is obsessed with finding won't reveal the character you just have to watch the movie but it is a great story with only Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan delivering a good performance the rest are just cheesily hanging around Sunil Shetty is a lso pretty good perofrmance it's a good movie it just lacks some elements which makes it a weak candor but otherwise it's good suspenseful it's enjoyable songs suck but the movie is good the story althoug weakened by the ending
My wife rented this movie from the local Desi video store (of course it was bootlegged) and I caught bits and pieces of it while she was watching but what caught my attention was right at the end as all was being revealed. I noticed how it was all lifter directly from "The Usual Suspects" and so I asked her to describe the plot to me in as much detail as possible. Her description was exactly the plot in The Usual Suspects. She said it was probably coincidence so to prove it, I had her play the ending scene for Chocolate and then I played the ending on my laptop side by side and lo-and behold, it was identical. It's really disheartening to see Indian movies that are exact copies of Hollywood movies and don't even give credit to the original. People who have not seen the original will tout this as a wonderful movie but those of us who know better see it for what it is, a complete rip off of a wonderful movie.

Pure trash. That about sums it up. Essentially, this is "The Usual Suspects" done by Bollywood while trying to do a half-baked Tarantino dialogue. This could have been a decent re-make, but the stories do not gel, the acting is horrible, the songs make you vomit ("I am a shot of tequila, but don't tell my mommy"--what class) and the dialogue is some of the most ridiculous to come out of Bollywood. Should be called "Boom Part 2". The problem here is one that Bollywood makes time and time again: try to copy the new western films while trying to put Indian elements in it. Another problem is you try to show that Western ideas only equate to Taliban and and sex, and that does not make a film. Bollywood should stick to the old formula of film naiveté (a la the 70's and late 80's films) and not try to be the next Rodriguez/Tarantino/Singer.
Innumerable movies have been copied and perhaps "Chocolate" qualifies for the worst when it comes to adapting for Bollywood. For starters, the story line is loaded with complexity. Added to it are the sub-plots which are far too many and should have been trimmed down to aid the comprehension of the Bollywood audience. And the non-linear progression adds to the woes. There are too many unwarranted "sex" references (read that "force-fit"). Basing the London was a bad idea.
Performance wise Anil Kapoor delivers a strong screen-presence. Next is Arshad Warsi. Tanushree Dutta attempts hard to display her "oomph". Emran Hashmi hardly leaves an impact. Sunil Shetty was extremely wooden. Irfan Khan is perhaps the worst considering the expectations that would arise when his name is associated with the project. Sushma Reddy is awful on both department, choice of costumes and acting.
I was amused to the opening credits stating "Inspired Films" presents. I suppose "Plagiarised Films" would more more apt.

I wish Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) would somehow see this movie!! I am sure he would pick up a chainsaw and chase the makers of this horrible excuse of a movie called "Chocolate" (ughhhh!!!)...
The original plot of The Usual Suspects has been raped and converted into a really lame story, with some crappy dialogues, crappy acting, crappy songs..etc.!!! I am sure the people who came up with this tripe didn't even grasp the story of The Usual Suspects!!! Just so that it looks "cool" they have successfully carbon-copied some entire sequences and dialogues (translated into Hindi), but in the end the director appears confused and doesn't seem to understand the crap that he created!! I guess the makers of this movie were high when they made this..'cause they have managed to create a perfect piece of trash by mixing the story of The Usual Suspects with their own story!! (Pathetic!!) Vivek Agnihotri and the rest of the people involved with the making of this movie deserve to die!! Avoid at all costs...especially if you are a fan of "The Usual Suspects". I wish there was a law against plagiarism!!! My condolences, Bryan Singer... please take notice!!!

this movie is a direct "inspiration" of the Bryan Singer's Usual Suspects. i think this should tell you most of the story. but wait.... is differently made in modern day London and the end is different. Four friends and a girl get into a web of crime and are drawn deeper into a web which is controlled by an omnipotent criminal. no one knows how he looks but he knows everyone. two friends are helped by a lawyer while the others are dead. the two friends narrate incidents to the lawyer which can confuse you somewhat but what the heck. the movie is stylishly made and is full of unpredictable sequences. thats what makes the movie better than what it could have been. all in all it is a better inspiration than the rest

If you are the sort who loves to criticize a Bollywood movie because it's 'inspired' from a Hollywood original, then this one is not for you! If you don't have access to the Usual Suspects DVD and are a Bollywood buff (both of which apply to me!), then this one is definitely for you! This movie is basically all about the story. It's a great thriller with a heart-stopping ending. Anil Kapoor stars in a different role, but hams in parts. Arshad Warsi is, as usual, a delight. Emraan Hashmi, Irfan Khan, Suniel Shetty, Sushma Reddy (debutante) put in good efforts. The only let-down is Tanushree Dutta who, in the absence of acting skills, allows her cleavage to do all the talking. The songs are hummable. Overall the movie has a smooth look and fast pace. A must for Bollywood thriller buffs -- if there are such!

It is really tough to understand actually what the hell the Director and the Storywriter tried to prove! To be very honest, at first it attracts me a lot. But, at the end when I got to see that there is no story at all, I was about to slap myself.
Starting was awesome, specially the way they give the intro of each person and gradually they went down and finally became a trash.
Songs are OK, cinematography is also cool. But a film deserves a story which was totally missing.
In Bangladesh we always expect good and classical Hindi films. Karan Johor or Yash Raj films have set up a level and we hope other director will try to touch or cross that level. To do so, they will have to stop making this types of films.

At the outset, let me make myself very clear on 2 issues. The Usual Suspects is my all time favorite movie and originality is a dying art in Bollywood.
Now for the real issue. What was the dimwit director of this dumbass movie thinking of when he thought he had "conceived the idea" to make a movie? Did he think ripping off a Hollywood masterpiece without any admission of guilt would endear himself to the viewing public? Or, even worse, did he have the audacity to think that no one in the viewing public would have the intellect to understand the original masterpiece? Maybe he made it for the "masses" and thought he was attempting something "different". However, the director must have forgotten that despite the waning excitement got out of foreign locales, the "masses" will rarely warm up to a movie shot entirely in the UK. The least he could've done was to have "Indianised" the entire movie in all ways. Then again, an escapist director would always find the easiest way out right?!
The only reason I have given this stinker of a movie the 2nd star is because instead of making me boil with anger it made me laugh out loud at the pathetic attempt in futility to create a movie!
