"You can hear it too?" "It's calling." Netflix has released an official teaser trailer for the new anime project Bubble, a new feature film from the "Death Note" and "Attack on Titan" filmmaker Tetsuro Araki. How's this for a wild concept: The story is set in Tokyo, after bubbles that broke the laws of gravity rained down upon the world. Cut off from the outside world, Tokyo has become a playground for a group of young people who have lost their families, acting as a battlefield for parkour team battles as they leap from building to building. In a Tokyo where gravity has broken, a boy and a girl are drawn to each other. Araki offers this quote with the teaser: "I hope you enjoy what we’ve created! While it will definitely feature exhilarating action and beautiful background art, I hope that I can also take everyone to even more unexpected places this time.

No stranger to controversy, Sarah Silverman loves to ask the tough questions, but this time she may have gone too far. In her new animated adult comedy, Silverman plays an elf who longs to become the next Santa Claus, begging the question: Could the world ever accept a female Santa? Silverman stars opposite Seth Rogen as the portly Saint Nicholas, and the zippy new trailer offers a glimpse of this dynamic duo in action, as well as plenty of other comedy favorites in quippy voice roles.
Beginning with the logline “out with the old, in with the elf — it’s time for the North Pole boys’ club to get a little more inclusive,” the new HBO Max series launched a trailer today just in time for some provocative holiday discussion ahead of the series’ release next week. Silverman plays a purple elf named Candy Smalls, “the highest-ranking female elf in the North Pole.

The Finnish Film Foundation, which receives its funding through the Ministry of Education and Culture from lottery and pool funds allocated for promoting film art, is facing new budget cuts. Its CEO, Lasse Saarinen, speaks to Variety about his battle to minimize the damage.
The cut of 440,000 euros introduced this year might be followed by an additional 1.94 million euros ($2.28 million), making up approximately 8.8% of the foundation’s subsidy and operating budget. The changes, suggested by the ministry, might come into play in autumn or winter.
“There will be cuts on the ‘cultural’ side. At first, it was supposed to be 18 million euros. Now, I hear it will be 17.5 million. But how they divide it – this can still change. And that’s why we are talking about it,” Saarinen says.
Saarinen, who wrote an open letter to the government, ultimately co-signed by chairman of the board, Anne Brunila, has been vocal about the case.

The Finnish Film Affair industry event awarded the upcoming feature “Bubble” with top honors for its fiction in progress pitch on Thursday, capping a competition in which six projects presented a wide range of stories, settings and styles.
Mainly Finnish productions pitched their films, some seeking international partners, with most hoping for sales, festival and distribution deals.
“Bubble,” the story of a teenage girl whose life is turned upside down when her mother announces she is divorcing her father to be with her lesbian lover, was described by director Aleksi Salmenperä as a heartwarming dramedy focusing on the challenges facing teens in dealing with departures from their comfort zones.
While the protagonist of the story, 16-year-old Eveliina, is, like most teens, liberal in her beliefs, “this liberal thinking doesn’t extend to her parents,” as producer Minna Haapkylä put it.
In scenes that are both tense but also tinged with ironic humor,...

Fresh off another win at Finland’s Jussi Awards, this time for his short film “The Bouncer,” Aleksi Salmenperä is already in post-production with his upcoming feature “Bubble,” about to be presented at Helsinki International Film Festival’s industry event Finnish Film Affair in its Fiction in Progress section.
“I was sort of embarrassed by this win,” he jokes. The comedy was shot six years ago and originally intended as a part of an episodic film. At previous Jussi Awards, Salmenperä was named best director for “Distractions” in 2016, and drama “Void” won best director and best film in 2019. “Bubble,” set to premiere in the spring of next year, is bound to surprise some of his fans, however, with Salmenperä calling it “the cosiest film” he has ever made.

One of the most interesting and always fascinating components of the sub-genre of body horror is how the body can become a metaphor for something unspoken and/ or repressed. Many directors, most famously perhaps Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg, have made a career of exploring how a certain feeling, an event or sensation can become a transformative experience, quite literally. Even though we as the audience might fear the change in a person’s body and eve find it abhorring up to the point when we turn our eyes away from the screen, ultimately, the emotions which laid the groundwork for the metamorphosis are easily accessible. In his short feature “Bubble”, which already competed in many festivals such as Palm Spring Short Fest 2021 and Sitges Film Festival 2020, Chinese director Haonan Wang explores the feeling of a couple meeting on an unusual date in a restaurant which leaves a lasting imprint on both of them.

Expansive Paris-based media group Mediawan has picked up international sales rights to the Jerusalem-set ultra-orthodox drama “The Rabbi,” which participates in this year’s Series Mania Forum at its Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.
Abuses of power aren’t unique to any one nationality, gender, sexual orientation or religion. With “The Rabbi,” celebrated filmmaker Eytan Fox proposes a fictionalized drama inspired by a true story which shocked Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community that proves that such abuses can happen almost anywhere.
“The Rabbi” turns on a powerful and well-known university professor from Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox community who uses his position to influence his male students into physical relationships. Although the students are all in their 20s and the relationships consensual, there is uproar when the truth comes out, both regarding the Rabbi engaging in relationships with his subordinates and the fact that this superstar clergyman is a closeted gay man.

Steven Soderbergh is a fantastically eclectic filmmaker (you never know where he’s going to go next), but if you look back over his roughly 30 dramatic features it’s telling to consider how many of them are some variety of tricky old-school thriller or film noir powered by suspenseful screw-tightening. I’m talking about the “Ocean’s” trilogy, the ebullient Elmore Leonard adaptation “Out of Sight,” the redneck heist thriller “Logan Lucky,” the deconstructed gangster mystery “The Limey,” the brooding noir “The Underneath,” the small-town grunge noir “Bubble,” the sex-industry noir “The Girlfriend Experience,” and the true-life-bumbler noir “The Informant!” Soderbergh has a prankish side, but the truth is he would have been right at home in the ’40s or ’50 churning out moody black-and-white thrillers like Robert Siodmak or Joseph H. Lewis.

Aryeh Bourkoff, founder and CEO of independent investment bank LionTree said audio is looking more attractive than video these days as consumers are a bit tapped out on TV.
People have 11 hours a day to spend on leisure time, he insisted during a Q&a at the Tribeca Festival Friday, and if that’s mostly video it’s a problem. “We have gone overboard on video streaming, which is why the rise of audio has happened. We think audio is more valuable these days than video,” he told moderator Stephanie Ruhle during TribecaX, a session that looks at business and entertainment.
The MSNBC anchor — and audience members on a rooftop in downtown Manhattan — were incredulous at the 11-hours stat, but took his point — podcasting has really exploded. “The ear is mightier than the eye” right now, he said.
Bankers are in business to do deals and LionTree is involved in many.

ABC is the broadcast network with the most outstanding current scripted series whose fate remains undecided.
A number of them are not bubble series and are assured a renewal, including flagship comedies The Conners, which recently re-signed its cast for next season, and The Goldbergs, which are ABC’s highest-rated scripted series behind the just renewed Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19. There has been chatter that two long-running ABC half-hour series, The Goldbergs and black-ish, might be renewed for their final seasons, but I hear that would not necessarily be the case, at least not for both series.
Also considered a sure bet for renewal is The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion, one of ABC’s most-watched series and a fan favorite with a devoted following, which finished neck-and-neck with NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist at the top of USA Today‘s recent Save Our Shows poll.

The first year of the Covid-19 pandemic was both a universal and incredibly personal experience. While not everyone’s life in the first year of the pandemic looked the same, there have been some common joys, struggles, and tragedies. And there have been stories that have helped get us through the first year of pandemic. The global Covid-19 pandemic is not over, but it has hopefully reached a turning point. Multiple vaccines protecting against the worst of the virus have been developed and have begun to be (unevenly) distributed around the world, with Israel, the U.K., Chile, and the U.S. currently with the greatest percentages of their populations having received at least one dose. As we hopefully move into a less deadly phase of the pandemic, we’re taking a moment to look back at the TV series, games, movies, and other pop culture moments that brought comfort,...

Ok, guess Grey’s Anatomy “casualty” Giacomo Gianniotti wasn’t kidding when he told TVLine that there are lots of ways that DeLuca could still appear on the ABC drama. The late doctor returned in Thursday’s episode, in twisty visions in poor, shattered Teddy’s head. But was their “reunion” — could anything be — enough to soothe her mind and mend her heart? Read on and find out.
‘You Said You Could Save Her’ | As “In My Life” began, Teddy remained borderline catatonic at her and Owen’s place even as he chattered away in hopes of getting a — any — response.

Seal Team Recap: Did Depositions Help or Hurt Jason's Case? Plus, How Is Mandy Liking Civilian Life?
This week on Seal Team, we learned why NCIS hauled Jason out of the Bulkhead in handcuffs. Did depositions from those around him help his case? And what advice did Mandy Ellis have to offer?
In an episode directed by Mandy herself aka former cast member Jessica Paré, Jason in short order learned that he was being charged with unlawfully killing an unarmed citizen during the team’s most recent op, in Jordan. His failure to ensure that the target was armed before the use of lethal force put him in violation of Ucmj Article 119, making for a manslaughter charge.

For more than two decades, Gareth Jones had spent late January and early February in snowy Park City, Utah at the Sundance Film Festival. But on Thursday night, Jones didn’t have to get on a plane to attend the annual film festival. Instead, he drove to the Sidewalk Film Fest and Cinema in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, as the local theater began its run as a Sundance Satellite Screen location, one of the outdoor, drive-in and arthouse theaters used as the fest has shifted to a virtual model amid the ongoing pandemic.
“The film community here is very supportive. It’s a small town and a big city,” Jones tells Variety. “And I decided, ‘Hey, I’m going to attend the in-person screenings are here at Sidewalk,’ because they do an amazing job with keeping things safe. Megan Thee Stallion did not squander her opportunities as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live,” using the spot to make a direct statement about violence toward Black women.
During her performance of “Savage,” her hit single of last spring, the words “Protect Black Women” appeared on the screen behind her, along with quotes from Malcom X and activist Tamika Mallory calling out Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron over his handling of Breonna Taylor’s death at the hands of Louisville police.
As Megan and her dancers stood at attention in the middle of the song, Mallory’s voice rang out, with the quote “Daniel Cameron is no different than the sell-out negroes who sold our people into slavery” projected behind them. In the case, presented by Cameron’s office, no charges were levied against any of the involved officers that directly related to Taylor’s death.
