Borderlands was a genuine bomb. No doubt about it. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. During a recent earnings call, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer spoke about the epic failure of Borderlands.
“On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said. With a budget of around $120 million, Borderlands stands to lose the studio a lot of money. Although Lionsgate did mitigate some of the risks by selling foreign rights, sources told Deadline that Borderlands could still lose as much as $30 million. “The success of our financial models doesn’t take the place of also getting the creative right,” Feltheimer added

In the first episode of the fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Dos Cerritos," D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) is still living among her fellow Orion pirates, commanding her own vessel and regularly going on plundering excursions. Although Tendi is a capable fighter, she is mild-mannered at heart, trying to rein in the ultra-violent, murder-forward ethos of her crew. Not-so-secretly, Tendi longs to return to the U.S.S. Cerritos, where she can happily be a junior office; medical science, her friends, and gentle service interest her more than looting and violence. Luckily, Tendi's sister D'Erica has offered a deal; salvage a crashed 300-year-old Orion vessel from a distant planet, and Tendi will be allowed to leave Orion again to pursue her Starfleet dreams.
A snag: when Tendi arrives at the location of the downed Orion vessel, there are others eager to salvage it for themselves. Tendi...

Kyle Hausmann-Stokes’ directorial debut My Dead Friend Zoe took the Grand Jury prize for Best Feature Narrative Saturday night as the Woodstock Film Festival presented awards for its silver jubilee edition.
The film stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman in a tale of a female veteran of the war in Afghanistan who “comes head to head with her Vietnam vet grandfather at the family’s ancestral lake house.” The feature grew out of a short film directed by Hausmann-Stokes, himself a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq.
The jury, comprised of Oren Moverman, Roger Ross Williams, and Debra Granik, wrote, “For a standout central performance that delves into the darkness of the human psyche in the aftermath of its most extreme brutality, and for shining a light on the tragic consequences of war on those who are sent in our name to fight, we the...

The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. Comparable films to the ones on sale here...

When "Borderlands" opened in theaters on August 9, 2024, it brought in just $8.6 million — an astonishingly low figure for a film that cost more than $100 million to make. Then, things just went from bad to worse for "Borderlands" at the box office, with the movie seeing an almost unprecedented 73% drop in its second weekend. Thus far, the video game adaptation has made just $21 million on a reported $115 million budget — and that's before the marketing cost is accounted for. A very rough estimate typically puts marketing at around half a film's production budget, so we're looking at a movie that likely cost in the region of $170 million, making less than a quarter of that at the box office ahead of its fast-approaching streaming debut.
With this in mind, you might be starting to see how much of a historic blunder we're witnessing with "Borderlands." But that's just the box office. Plenty of movies...

It’s an interesting time to write about video game adaptations, especially in light of the Borderlands disaster.
The entire point was to talk about the colossal leap forward in game adaptations from the days of the Bob Hoskin Super Mario Brothers absurdity to Amazon Prime’s Fallout.
The latter is sitting on 16 awards and nominations, while the former remains the butt of jokes, memes, and gifs to this day.
(Courtesy of Prime Video)
Once upon a time, Hollywood just wanted to cash in on a popular video game franchise.
Quality be damned. While the money factor hasn’t changed, Tinseltown now knows the audience is hypersensitive to adaptations of beloved franchises.

It was husband vs wife this weekend at the top of the box office charts, with Blake Lively’s romantic drama, It Ends With Us, battling it out for the top spot with hubby Ryan Reynolds’s box office behemoth, Deadpool & Wolverine. In the end, the superhero team-up movie managed to hold on to the top spot for a third weekend in a row, grossing an outstanding $54 million, which is only a 44% drop since last week (that’s a great hold), with the film likely to cross the $500 million mark at the domestic box office by mid-week.
However, while it wasn’t able to eke out a win over Deadpool, It Ends With Us, which is adapted from the novel by Colleen Hoover, was still a major win. The Blake Lively vehicle’s $50 million gross makes it one of the highest-grossing romantic dramas in recent memory, with it well on...

There are seven games in the Borderlands series, games whose procedurally generated rewards and core mechanics and science fictional nihilism with Western influences could see them described as non-voter oater looter shooters.
I'm not going to say more effort went into trying to construct that sentence than Borderland's script. However there's noises that co-writer Joe Crombie is a) a pseudonym and b) that the pen behind that nom de plume Craig Mazin is disavowing any connection to the script. That's the Craig Mazin who penned video game adaptation The Last Of Us, an episode of which has been nominated for a Hugo award that puts it in the same august company as Dune the novel and Dune the film. They're not quite the Oscars of science fiction, but they are named after a person and they are a big deal. I'm not just saying that because as an...

We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

Many of them have stated how it helps them to wind down and relax after a long day of shooting for a film, and it is probably the closest we will ever get to relating with these superstars in real life.

John Boyega, Felicity Jones, Jack Reynor and Jodie Turner Smith are set to star in a new thriller called “Borderland” set during the time of Ireland’s Ira, or the Irish Republican Army, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

The manga centers on Ryōhei Arisu (pronounced the same as "Alice" in Japanese), “a male high school student who is irritated with his intolerable everyday life. One night, he tags along with his bad friends Karube and Chōta to hang out in town. However, the town is suddenly covered in giant fireworks. When he comes to his senses, Ryōhei notices that no one else is around. Finding themselves in a different world, Ryōhei, Karube, and Chōta are forced to participate in survival games or die right off the bat. The three fight to live, as well as to find a way back to their own world.”
This is the official synopsis shared by Netflix:

You didn’t need to look far to find escapism in the horror genre this past year. If you felt like losing yourself in a movie, Pennywise was waiting with open arms in the sewer drain. If you wanted to feel like a kid again, Mike and his friends were waiting for you on Netflix, their bikes parked at the Hawkins arcade when they're not fending off the Demidogs. Looking back on 2017, here are some of my favorite slices of escapism oases in the horror genre:
Stranger Things Season 2: Whether you look at it from a character, creature, or story standpoint, Stranger Things Season 2 was the Aliens to the first season’s Alien. Despite having a bigger story, The Duffer Brothers never lose sight of the characters, further exploring the tested friendships of Mike’s group (if you can even call it Mike’s group anymore, since Dustin, Lucas,...

Newsflash will see Chris Pine as legendary news anchor Walter Cronkite, set in 1963 during the Kennedy assassination story.
Chris Pine is getting ready to trade the catchphrase, "beam me up," for “that's the way it is.” That's because the Star Trek and Wonder Woman actor has landed the role of legendary news anchor Walter Cronkite in a fact-based drama, called Newsflash.
The November 22, 1963 assassination of President John F. Indeed, the film will center on the CBS news anchor’s monumental report that kicked off when he famously interrupted daytime soap opera As the World Turns to break the initial report of shots being fired at Kennedy’s presidential motorcade. Set to visit 16 cities in 2014, Wizard World’s plethora of comic book booths, clothing vendors, and impressive line-up of celebrities are always enough to sate the appetite of any pop culture enthusiast, but prior to their visit to Minneapolis May 2nd–4th, I was wondering how much horror would be had in the aisles within the Convention Center’s cavernous confines.
As it turns out, Wizard World had more than enough entertainment for horror fans to dig into, and they picked the perfect horror headliner for Wizard World Minneapolis: Robert Englund, best known as Freddy Krueger, the living legend of our nightmares and realities.
One of my first destinations upon entering Wizard World Minneapolis was Robert Englund’s booth. I weaved my way through a crowd of eye-grabbing cosplayers—Hellboy, Darth Maul, and a perfectly matched Spider-Man and Black Cat couple were of particular notice—before stepping in line to...

Forget Swine Flu, the only illness you want to be innoculated against is the flesh-rotting sickness that spread through Cabin Fever!
When Cabin Fever opened in 2002, with it's audacious mix of horror, gore and comedy, it was a surprise hit. Introducing the world to Fango reader-turned-filmmaker Eli Roth and scream queens Cerina Vincent & Jordan Ladd, Cabin Fever got strong reviews and the cover of Fangoria. Even though it had an ending that left itself open for one in a genre that thrives on them, Cabin Fever never got a sequel... until now.
Seven years after the original, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever made it's world premiere at Screamfest Horror Film Festival at Hollywood's Mann Chinese 6 this past weekend. Directed by Ti West (House Of The Devil), it picks up where the original left off.
