Warning: contains spoilers for the Labyrinth: Coronation Comics.
Maybe yours is the kind of mind that’s never worried about why in the 1986 film Labyrinth, Goblin King Jareth – ostensibly a human man, albeit one who can turn into an owl – rules a species with which he shares zero physical characteristics. If so, then go in peace, friend, and enjoy life. You likely already are. If, however, yours is the sort of mind that regularly lets you leave home in slippers because it’s busy wondering how they get the horses to the Olympics, then step this way. The Labyrinth mystery has been answered!
In March 2018, Boom! Studios published the first of Simon Spurrier and Daniel Bayliss’ delightful 12-part Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation series. The solicitation trailed the books as the untold history of the Goblin King, offering “a striking look into the history of the Labyrinth itself, and what...

Once upon a time, Jim Henson found himself stranded in the middle of a snowstorm. To pass the time, the Muppet Show creator began to dream up an elaborate story of mystics, monsters, and two different races — a vulturelike aristocracy called the Skeksis and a kindhearted, elfin people known as Gelflings — battling over the fate of their planet, Thra. By the time the storm ended, Henson had a 25-page movie treatment. He called it The Dark Crystal. The pioneering puppeteer was prepared to stake his whole career and his relationship with his No.

For years—if not decades—various movie industry people have tried to get a sequel to Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s The Dark Crystal off the ground, with one would-be director explaining last year that he walked off of the project due to the producers’ apparent lack of respect for Henson’s ideas. That director, Shane Abbess, explained that Henson had composed handwritten notes laying out what a sequel would be about, but nobody other than him actually seemed interested in paying attention to what those notes said.
Now, that sequel is finally happening, but it won’t be a movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Boom! Studios has announced a 12-part comic book series called The Power Of The Dark Crystal that will serve as a direct follow-up to the events of the original film. On top of that, the THR story says it’s based on an...

We never got The Dark Crystal 2 on the big screen in the end - but the story is coming to comics...
When it was released back in December of 1982, Jim Henson and Frank Oz's The Dark Crystal was something of a curiousity. Faithful fans of The Muppets wondered why the pair spent their time building an elaborate fantasy world on screen when they could have been working on another project featuring Kermit and company, and the rest of the audience wasn't sure what to make of the odd vision that was unfolding on screen. (Plus, some parents were concerned that the movie would be too disturbing for their kids and stayed away). Although the movie made its budget back, it never quite had the initial critical or pop cultural impact that Henson and Oz were hoping for, and was at first largely viewed as a compelling disappointment.

Fans of ‘80s cult film “The Dark Crystal” may hang their heads in sorrow today, as it looks as if the decades long development hell for The Jim Henson Company’s sequel to the 1982 fantasy epic helmed by Henson and Frank Oz has taken a bad turn once again. For awhile there things where looking mostly positive, as back in May 2010 it was reported that “Daybreakers” co-directors Peter and Michael Spierig where starting pre-production on the sequel entitled “The Power of the Dark Crystal,” and would be utilizing CGI and the 3D format. While the choice of the Spierigs was an awful one, especially over the much more capable animation director and fan supported Genndy Tartakovsky, many folks just seemed happy they’d finally get to see the Gelfings embarking on another adventure. Well now production house Omnilab Media is said to be parting ways with The Jim Henson Company on the project,...

A large step forward in the likelihood of a sequel to the 1982 fantasy movie The Dark Crystal took place today with the announcement of The Speirig Brothers (Daybreakers, Undead) to direct The Power of the Dark Crystal. In addition, The Jim Henson Company is partnering with the Australian production company Onmilab Media on the making of the movie.
Also revealed was the intention to film the movie in stereoscopic 3D, the same 3D technique used for Avatar. As was the case with the first Dark Crystal, Henson will create the film's puppets and strange alien creatures. Brian Froud is returning to work as the conceptual designer of the sequel while Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Jason Lust are producing for Henson.

Just over a month ago, artists Brian and Wendy Froud confirmed that Dark Crystal sequel The Power Of The Dark Crystal was still alive and kicking. It’s official: a sequel to The Dark Crystal is coming, and it’s the directors of Daybreakers who will be calling the shots…
Here's a project that we can't help but have mixed feelings about. On the one hand, the thought of a second Dark Crystal movie is an interesting one, and if it captures the spirit of the first one, then we'd far rather watch it then the majority of the films that masquerade as modern-day family entertainment.
But then there's the obvious fear. The Dark Crystal looks and feels like a complete one-off, and now, around two decades later, it doesn't necessarily feel like a sequel that needed to happen.
However, excitement is winning out here at the moment, and The Jim Henson Company has now released a press release confirming the movie and its director.

Talk about a movie that freaked the bajesus (that's not a word, it's a state of mind) out of us when we were youngsters. Jim Henson's 1982 cult-classic "The Dark Crystal" was created as a childrens movie but to a young Bidite it might as well be hand crafted by Satan himself...

If you're thirty-something like me, one film that keeps popping up from your childhood is Jim Henson's much beloved 1982 classic The Dark Crystal. For a kid's flick it was pretty dark and disturbing. Back at the end of March, we ran a story about some movement on a potential sequel to Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal. Today it's been confirmed -- The Jim Henson Company is teaming up with Omnilab Media to make Power of the Dark Crystal.
We've heard rumors of a follow-up to Henson and Frank Oz's cult hit for years, and it seemed like it was going to come to fruition back in 2005-2006, but that earlier version fell through. Undaunted, the company is ready to take another crack at it, this time with brothers Peter and Michael Spierig set to direct. The duo previously worked on the futuristic vampire film Daybreakers. The film will be based on a script from Moulin Rouge scribe Craig Pearce, crafted from an original version by Annette Duffy and David Odell.
