Dennis Quaid's golf biopic, The Long Game, is a global success on Netflix, featuring a heartwarming true story of inclusion and progression in golf. The Greatest Game Ever Played, a Shia Labeouf film, tells a real-life underdog story of Francis Ouimet's journey to a U.S. Open victory in golf. Both films received positive reviews, with The Long Game surpassing The Greatest Game Ever Played on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDb favors Labeouf's classic.
Dennis Quaid's golf biopic is performing brilliantly on Netflix, and it is the perfect reminder to watch a nearly two-decade-old Shia Labeouf film. Daniel Brühl is getting back behind the camera to direct “Break,” a biopic about the tennis champion Gottfried von Cramm whose rise to stardom in the 1930s saw him face off with the Nazi regime in his native Germany.
“All Quiet on the Western” front star Felix Kammerer will lead the feature, which reunites the actor, Bruhl and the team behind the Oscar-winning WWI drama. “Break” is based on a screenplay by Hossein Amini from Marshall Jon Fisher’s “A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played.”
The Ink Factory (“The Pigeon Tunnel,” “The Night Manager”) and their partners Marc Platt and Adam Siegel for Marc Platt Productions are teaming with Malte Grunert for Amusement Park (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) for Nine Hours on the picture, which will be told in German and English.

The first project, Played, is a comedy in which Franklin would star. The second project, Closure, for BET and BET+, is a family drama inspired by the life of baseball Hall-of-Famer Andre Dawson turned funeral home owner. Franklin would executive produce both projects via his Franklin Entertainment.
Written by Devon Shepard (The Ms. Pat Show), in Played, Franklin stars as a TV personality in the comedy which chronicles the trials of a dysfunctional dater.

Brendan Fraser is learning a lot from the cancellation of “Batgirl”.
The star of “The Whale”, along with director Darren Aronofsky, spoke with Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival about his new movie and shared his reaction to the news “Batgirl” wouldn’t be released.
“The fans really wanted to see this film made. Leslie Grace is a dynamo,” Fraser said of the film’s leading lady.
Fraser, who starred in the film as the villain Firefly, said he was “disappointed” by DC’s decision to shelve the nearly complete film, but said it was a valuable lesson for him.

Heather Lind, the former star of AMC’s political drama series “Turn: Washington Spies,” accused President George H. W. Bush of sexual assault in an Instagram post that has since been deleted. The actress wrote that the former President “touched me from behind” while taking a photo at a March 2014 press event celebrating the television series.
Lind said she believed the action classifies as sexual assault and felt that Bush viewed it as “an attempt at humor.” She wrote that a security guard blamed her for the action for standing too close to the President, while former First Lady Barbara Bush allegedly knew what occurred and “rolled her eyes.”

On the eve of X-Men: Days Of Future Past‘s release, social media was awash with chatter about one particular scene: Magneto’s breakout. The brilliant blend of technical wizardry and humor orbited around one pivotal character in the sequence, the boy who can move at the speed of light, Quicksilver. The mission to retrieve Magneto from the Pentagon proved to be a massive hit with fans; but it very nearly didn’t happen.
In fact, that scene was originally allotted for the reappearance of The Last Stand character Juggernaut. Played in the 2006 sequel by Vinnie Jones, DoFP writer and producer Simon Kinberg previously went on record to say he initially toyed with the idea of including a younger version of the character.
Now, thanks to an interview on the Empire Online podcast, director Matthew Vaughn explains how Juggernaut’s bulky ballast would have proved indispensable in capturing Magneto:

Michael Douglas. Anthony Hopkins. Just two actors who've returned to play the parts that won them Oscars...
When Oscar glory comes knocking for a successful Hollywood actor, it must be hugely tempting when the chance arrives for them to reprise that award-winning role. But while sequels and reboots are a common enough sight in the movie industry these days, examples of stars who've returned to their Oscar-winning roles are relatively few and far between.
The reason, perhaps, is because it's so difficult to recapture the creative lightning in a bottle that led to the Oscar win in the first place. Nevertheless, some actors do occasionally take up the offer and return to the filmmaking well. And as the list below proves, the results can sometimes be highly accomplished - though seldom quite as powerful and fresh as the films they're following...

In the early years of the Premier League, having a hardman in your team was seen as a necessity. From Roy Keane to Stuart Pearce, the division was littered with players who prided themselves on their tough tackling and no nonsense approach. However, today such characters are a rarity.
Arsenal themselves have boasted several hardmen over the years. The start of Arsene Wenger’s reign was perhaps the dying embers of that type of player, with Tony Adams and co representing a throwback to the George Graham era.
Since then, it would be fair to say that the modern game has taken a shift. Out went the bruising tacklers and in came the tiki taka passers. It means we have witnessed less fighting and bone-crunching challenges, and more handbags and diving. A sight that must certainly infuriate Vinnie Jones and the rest of Wimbledon’s ‘Crazy Gang’.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past is now in cinemas and fans are finally able to see what returning franchise supremo Bryan Singer has achieved in his quest to marry his own cast – so crudely abused in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand – with the exceptional prequel timeline cast introduced by Matthew Vaughn. Armed with one of the most enduringly popular comic book story arcs of all time as his source, and with an eye-watering amount of talent at his disposal, it’s no great surprise that the film has picked up phenomenal reviews – including our own four star rating – but as with the Avengers universe, things could have been very different.
If the actors who were either tentatively linked to roles in the X-Men movie world, or who pulled out or flat out refused the roles they were offered had made to the big screen we might not have...

The unloved films of 2009 provide the focus in our final list of the 2000s' overlooked greats...
The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.
Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

From dramas to action and everything in between, here's our pick of 20 underrated films from 1990...
Think back to the big films of 1990, and you'll probably immediately come up with things like Ghost, the year's top-grossing film, or maybe Home Alone, which made a star out of the young Macaulay Culkin.
If you're into sci-fi or action, you might pluck Total Recall, Back To The Future Part III or even Die Hard 2 out of your memory banks. But what about all those movies that didn't make it into the year's top 10 ranking films? As ever, there's a huge number of duds and forgettable flops, but there were plenty of films that were wrongly overlooked, too.

With the 2012 Grammy Awards upon us and everyone already thrilled for the big Beach Boys / Foster The People / Maroon 5 reunion (finally!), let’s take a second to remind ourselves of something we all already know and complain about every year: The Grammys are, without a doubt, the weirdest and most arbitrary awards show in the entire entertainment world. To re-prove this time-tested theory, we’ve scoured Grammy’s checkered past and compiled some of its most bizarre winners in a desperate search of some meaning for this odd gramophonic statue. From the awesomely-random to the just flat-out terrible, here’s a list of 13 People You Can’t Believe Won A Grammy: 1. Zach Braff Without rehashing the internet’s eminent disdain for Garden State, let’s just take a moment to acknowledge that an actual physical golden gramophone was given to Zach Braff for being the “compilation producer” of the...

When making a movie based on a superhero comic, there’s probably no aspect of production that will invite greater scrutiny than that pinnacle of all things superhero: the costume. And not to stereotype, but let's face it, gay and bisexual guys probably have a special interest in superhero costumes. We certainly have a definite appreciation for the often, um, revealing outfits sported by the male superheroes, while many of us can also appreciate the aesthetic styles worn by the women.
Which means that costume designers have to create a look that will somehow both be true to the source material, but is updated while also looking good on flesh-and-blood actors who have to actually move around in the real world.

2011 is the 40th Anniversary of the death of legendary Doors front man Jim Morrison. With their legend intact and music as popular as ever, Oliver Stone’s biopic has been restored and is released here for the first time on Blu-ray. Val Kilmer was born to play Jim Morrison, and is supported by a cast that includes Meg Ryan, Kyle MacLachlan, Billy Idol and Michael Madsen. Featuring music from The Doors themselves and electrifying recreations of their most infamous on-stage performances, Stone captures perfectly the tumultuous, psychedelic journey of one of the late 60′s most exciting and influential bands.
We have teamed up with Optimum Releasing to offer you the chance of winning 1 of 3 copies of The Doors on Blu-ray (released on April 18th), simply answer the following question:

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

Diplomatic immunity! Mark revisits the 1989 sequel, Lethal Weapon 2. But how does it compare to the classic original? And has Patsy Kensit improved?
It's a scene that could only have been written in the 80s. In truth, there have been many great bathroom-based sequences put to celluloid, but if there is a better one than the standout scene in Lethal Weapon 2, I haven't seen it yet.
The sequence in which Sergeant Murtaugh is trapped on a booby-trapped loo, trading jokes and sentiments with Riggs, is the one that Lethal Weapon 2 will always be remembered for, and rightly so. For in that one moment, the film's over-the-top, hyperreal sensibility is laid bare for the viewer, and it's a master class in suspense, entertainment and emotion.
For here is one of the series' many touching buddy moments between its two leads, and it works a treat, juxtaposing the ridiculousness of...

When I began this column, I originally intended to devote it to the teen actors who filled my childhood days with adolescent longing - cute youngsters like 3 Ninjas star Michael Treanor, the subject of last week's post - but watching the Olympics this weekend got me nostalgic for a certain figure skating romantic comedy that earned multiple replays in my Vcr throughout the mid-90s. In a weekend filled with thrilling hockey games and the opening rounds of the pairs figure skating competition, I couldn't help but think back to the movie that combined the two ice sports in glorious fashion in the spring of 1992: The Cutting Edge.
My Movie Crush: Doug Dorsey in The Cutting Edge (1992)
Played by: D.B. Sweeney
The Cutting Edge opens with a prologue set during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, where hockey player Doug Dorsey (D.B. Sweeney) and pairs figure skater Kate Moseley (Moira Kelly...

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.
If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:

The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit...

Georgia
Opens: 2010
Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech
Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

First Look feeds meter for 'Special'
CANNES -- First Look Studios has nabbed worldwide rights to Special, featuring Michael Rapaport as a comic book-loving meter maid who finds he has developed extraordinary superpowers. In Hal Haberman and Jeremy Passmore's first feature film, which premiered at January's Sundance Film Festival, Rapaport's ordinary Joe takes a mind-altering drug that sends him into a world of defying gravity, reading people's minds and walking through walls. First Look also has bought U.S. rights to the Northern Ireland action-thriller Johnny Was, executive producer Ben Katz said Saturday, adding that the movie also has been accepted for the Karlovy Vary film festival. That movie stars former soccer player Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Patrick Bergin (Played), former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis and the Who's Roger Daltrey.
