Never say never, but Nosferatu filmmaker Robert Eggers is pretty much dead-set on not making a contemporary movie.
The auteur — whose pics have spanned 1630’s and 1890’s New England, the Viking Era (2022’s The Northman) and now 1830’s Transylvania (four-time Oscar-nominated Nosferatu) — said in a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes that the thought of such a project makes him feel “ill.”
“The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill,” he began. “And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no.”
When asked to specify the “ceiling” of which time periods Eggers would fancy traveling to, he answered: “I don’t know. I might go potentially to 1950 but before World War II is more inviting for my imagination.”

The second remake of Fw Murnau’s unofficial Dracula adaptation is handsomely shot and stylised, with a forbiddingly gruesome monster, but walks the line between self-conscious and scary
Here is Robert Eggers’s avowed passion project as writer-director: a luxury-arthouse remake on a grand scale, paying homage to Fw Murnau’s classic silent film from 1922, the German expressionist nightmare of Count Orlok, or Nosferatu, the “evil one”, a pallid vampire living in the shadow of the Carpathian Mountains. Eggers’s film can’t quite bear to say the comedy word “Transylvania” out loud, though we get to glimpse it on a map. It is an interesting new Nosferatu for our age of pandemic fear, with some beautiful images and striking moments, particularly in the eerie moonlit hallucination sequence at the beginning, which makes the rest of the story feel slightly literal and self-conscious.

When you break it down, Castlevania fans are still divided into two camps: one loves the old-school sidescrolling whip action of the original trilogy, while the other enjoys the Metroidvania entries a la Symphony of the Night. Indie developer Lv.4 Games has gone the “Why not both?” route with their fan game Castlevania ReVamped, combining both genres into one.
Castlevania ReVamped is a Windows and Linux-based title which sports that classic 8-bit Castlevania look, but borrows features from the Metroidvania games to create a wholly unique package. As a result, Simon Belmont’s moveset is a mash-up of his classic adventures with his Rondo of Blood moveset, with a few new additions.
ReVamped has been out for a while, but Lv.4 Games recently announced via X that the project is now going open-source, opening the door for modding, as well as those who wish to use it as the base for their own projects.

Austin, TX – The 2024Sxsw Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 16th, after nine days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Bob Trevino Likes It” as the top Narrative Feature and “Marvin is Sorry” as top TV Pilot.
The Narrative Jury included Chicago critic Robert Daniels. The Jury’s statement about “Bob Trevino Likes It” was “Tracie Laymon’s semi-autobiographical story of a struggling young woman who finds anchor in an unlikely connection feels at once familiar and yet surprising. Laymon’s sure hand transforms what might have been saccharine into something raw thanks to vulnerable lead performances from Barbie Ferreira and an unusually uncool John Leguizamo. Refreshingly real and wrenchingly bittersweet, “Bob Trevino Likes It” stole our hearts and earned this prize.”

Love it or hate it, Konami’s Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is an important entry in the series. It has its fans, and some of those fans work at Retroware, who have announced their sidescrolling tribute to Konami’s baby with The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest.
Coming to PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series in 2025, Simon Quest wears its inspiration on its sleeve. The story sees the eponymous Simon Quest arriving in Transylvania, only to discover his vampire hunting rival, Stan Helsing, has already slain Dracula. Seeking to reclaim his glory, Simon Quest journeys across Wallachia to gather the dark count’s body parts to resurrect him, and then slay Dracula himself!

The immense success of Hotel Transylvania was highly impacted by its actors, but eventually, Dracula's voice actor departed the franchise. The innovate way in which the studio turned Universal monster stories into an animated family movie is credited with the franchise's ability to generate and even sustain solid audience interest. However, this is not the only reason Hotel Transylvania regularly secured a top spot at the box office, as this achievement could also be credited to other factors as well.
While Hotel Transylvania’s four-feature film run received mixed reviews, it was consistently successful at the box office. The animated franchise grossed more than $1.3 billion against a total production budget of $245 million. Unlike its contemporary franchises, Hotel Transylvania managed to churn out high-budget, high-quality feature films, short films, television series, and video games of consistent kid-friendly humor, resulting in it being one of 2010’s pop culture cornerstones. Kristine Belson made her first trip to the Annecy Animated Film Festival as president of Sony Pictures Animation three years ago, not long after taking control of the studio. In a speech there, she sketched out a new philosophical direction for the division: In an animation landscape dominated by longtime juggernauts and franchises, Belson wanted to make Sony Animation a filmmaker-driven studio, one without a house style, which could take chances on projects other companies might struggle to fit into their more tried-and-true pipelines.
“It was well-received at the time, but it was all theoretical,” she says of her inaugural Annecy address. “Everyone says they want to be filmmaker-driven, and I believe all of us at the various animation studios believe it, but there’s a difference between talking the talk and walking the walk.”

“There are mimosas upstairs,” a staffer reminds Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson on a recent Friday in her sunny and serene office, just a brisk walk from the studio lot in Culver City, Calif.
Belson waves off the offer. “Not today,” she responds politely. She cites a packed schedule of home entertainment meetings, as well as a conversation with Variety about the studio’s current Oscar contender “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and her ambitious upcoming slate.
But if anyone should be popping bottles, it’s Belson. After roughly four years in the post, she has transformed a sleepy studio shingle into a global powerhouse, built on inclusion and largely run by women. In addition to her unique leveraging of a certain wall-crawling hero, Belson is preparing three original titles for release over the next two years. As the year winds down, it’s clear that 2018 was an atypical time for animated features vying for Oscars and other awards. Not all big-name studios fielded contenders: Pixar/Disney had the billion-dollar baby “Incredibles 2,” while Disney Animation’s holiday entry — “Ralph Breaks the Internet” — is poised to repeat the box office and critical success of its 2012 Oscar nominee “Wreck-It Ralph.” Sony cruised to strong B.O. with “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” and in December, Columbia/Sony will launch “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.” But familiar competitors, including DreamWorks Animation, Laika and Blue Sky Studios sat the game out.
Universal’s Illumination Entertainment had no Minions scurrying around, though it will unveil a 3D-animated take on Dr. Seuss’ Christmas classic with “The Grinch.” Warner Animation Group built on the studio’s storied animation rep with the musical-comedy “Smallfoot” — a man-meets-bigfoot tale. “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” was a surprisingly decisive #1 film this weekend with an estimated $44 million. It disappointed anyone who expected a tight, three-way race with “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Skyscraper.” While this is great news for Sony, these results present several troubling issues.
Overall, the results are fine. This weekend’s box office is about equal to last year, which saw two films gross more than anything this weekend. Even so, year-to-date grosses remain nearly nine percent above 2017.
Adjusted, the $44 million gross is the smallest in the “Hotel Transylvania” series; this the first released in summer. The first two debuted at the end of September, a position that signaled they were less competitive.
The best animated opening weekend last summer was “Despicable Me 3” at $72 million; at $53 million, “Cars 3” felt a bit disappointing. “Transylvania” is good enough, and set to make money: It cost $80 million, and opened to $54 million overseas.

Dario Argento’s Dracula (2012)
Director: Dario Argento
Screenplay: Dario Argento, Enrique Cerezo, Stefano Piani, Antonio Tentori, Bram Stoker
Cast: Thomas Kretschmann (Dracula), Marta Gastini (Mina), Asia Argento (Lucy), Unax Ugalde (Jonathan), Rutger Hauer (Van Helsing)
It took me a while to warm up to Francis Ford Coppola’s take on Dracula from 1992. No cape, and morphing from an old guy in a geisha outfit to one of the Doobie Brothers in a Victorian pimp suit. I was accustomed to the refined stylings of Christopher Lee and Frank Langella. I’m glad, because even more takes on the classic vampire tale would follow, and being a purist just isn’t conducive to having an open mind.
There have been Italian vampire tales before, but never by the master of the giallo himself. I’ve got a good friend who summed up Italian horror cinema perfectly.

Considered the Godfather of Giallo, Argento has been the creative force behind numerous influential Italian films including The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, Inferno, Tenebre, Phenomena, and Opera.
During our recent interview with the iconic director, he discussed what fueled his decision to helm a feature based on one of the greatest stories of all time, his experiences working with 3D and his ensemble, as well as why Dracula might just be the biggest romantic in the horror genre.

Italian horror maestro Dario Argento is returning to the genre that he’s permanently put a stamp on with his own take on the most famous of vampires in… Dracula 3D. The man who sent chills down our spine with classics like Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebrae, and several others, Argento dominated the realm of gialli pictures, thanks to their intense colors, style, blood, and distinct music.

The director who brought us the classic horror thriller Suspiria, Dario Argento, has taken on the story of Dracula and has reimagined it for the big screen for the 500th time. The movie is called Argento's Dracula 3D, and it seems to have an old school Hammer horror feel to it. I like earlier work, but over the years his stuff just hasn't evolved. In fact, it just seems like it's been getting worse.
The movie star the director's daughter, Asia Argento, and Rutger Hauer plays Van Helsing, which seems like the best thing this movie has going for it.

As a lover of old-school vampire films, especially the brilliant series from Hammer that extended from the 1950s-1970s, I look with interest and possibly a little trepidation to the release of Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D. We have the first trailer for you today, and there’s no doubt of at least one thing: it’s going to be campy.
Thomas Kretschmann and Rutger Hauer star in this version of the Count and his nemesis Van Helsing. The plot is as usual: young man heads to Transylvania to meet with a mysterious nobleman. Said nobleman has a thing for blood and pretty young women, ultimately going after the young man’s wife. Enter Van Helsing, who knows how to defeat legions of the undead. Asia Argento is on hand as an eager young lady who totally digs dudes with fangs.

Dracula’s Demeter by Doug Lamoreux(Stylus-Of-Iron Publishing)
August, 1897, the Russian schooner Demeter, carrying fifty boxes of earth, ran aground in Whitby, her crew missing save for her captain who was tied to the wheel with a crucifix in his lifeless hands. The only living thing aboard, a huge dog, escaped into the night. With a few cryptic journal entries, Bram Stoker (in his classic ‘Dracula’) offered scant hints regarding the terrifying sea voyage that brought the vampire king from Transylvania to a blood-rich London. Now, the whole mind-rending story is told… The story of Trevor Harrington, a British scholar and fugitive. Of Swales, the old Scot cook, who deceives the ship’s commander, but knows a good deal “aboon grims and boh-ghosts”. Of Ekaterina Gabor, a beautiful Romanian who follows her lover to sea by stowing away. Of Captain Nikilov, fighting for his ship and crew while something evil,...

Of Ekaterina Gabor, a beautiful Romanian who follows her lover to sea by stowing away. Of Captain Nikilov, fighting for his ship and crew while something evil,...

At a film festival dominated by subtitled deep-think, you sometimes need a break. You need a meal, or a drink, or a nap. Or, just maybe, you need a movie like Dario Argento’s Dracula. I’ve never been the biggest fan of this schlock-operatic Italian splatter maven, but after such fevered orgies of gore as Suspiria and Unsane, the thought of him going back to the source — going back to Dracula — sounded appealing. Dracula turns out to be ripely entertaining in a kitschy-sincere old-fashioned way. (The kitsch is in how sincere it is.) It’s true, to a far greater degree than I expected,...

Last year, we saw a number of official photos and sales videos for Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D, but the official trailer has just been released ahead of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival Dracula 3D stars Thomas Kretschmann (Dracula), Marta Gastini (Mina), Asia Argento (Lucy), Unax Ugalde (Harker), and Rutger Hauer (Van Helsing).
“The tale begins with Jonathan Harker, journeying by train and carriage from England to Count Dracula’s crumbling, remote castle situated in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania. The purpose of his mission is to catalogue the big library of Dracula. At first enticed by Dracula’s gracious manner, Harker soon discovers that he has become a prisoner in the castle. He also begins to see disquieting facets of Dracula’s nocturnal life. One night while searching for a way out of the castle, and against Dracula’s strict admonition not to venture outside his room at night,...

The first true trailer for Dario Argento's Dracula 3D is here and it looks ... well ... there's owls, wolves, vampires and his lovely daughter, Asia. Just how well all of these components put together will fare is completely up for debate.
Dracula 3D features Asia Argento as Lucy, Thomas Kretschmann as Dracula, Marta Gastini as Mina, and Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing. Miguel Angel Silvestre and Miriam Giovanelli also star.
Thanks to DC reader Dick Winchester for the heads-up!
Synopsis:
Transylvania, 1893.
One night in the woods adjacent to Passo Borgo, at the foot of the Carpazi mountains, a couple of young lovers, Tania and Milos, secretly meet. On her way home, Tania is chased and overcome by a "dark shadow" that kills her. In those days Jonathan Harker, a young librarian, arrives at the village hired by Count Dracula, a nobleman from the area. Tania's body mysteriously disappears from the cemetery.

Publicity for the films that will be playing at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival is beginning and I have just received three new images from three anticipated films playing the fest. I'll begin with the above shot from Michael Haneke's Amour, which stars Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant as a pair of cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter (Isabelle Huppert), who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack after which the couple's bond of love is severely tested. Alexandre Tharaud also stars. Based on the synopsis, there isn't really much this film can likely convey in terms of pictures, though I do expect Darius Khondji, who also served as Haneke's cinematographer on his English-language remake of Funny Games, will deliver some images well worth looking at. Oh, Dario, Dario, Dario... what hath thou wrought? To say that the maestro's latest take on the classic tale of Dracula is a bit eccentric is kind of an understatement. See for yourselves.
