This Is Not a Test: Olivia Holt to star in film described as The Breakfast Club meets 28 Weeks Later
A couple of years ago, Olivia Holt had a prominent role in the time travel slasher movie Totally Killer. She’s one of the leads in the rom-com slasher Heart Eyes, which reaches theatres this weekend. Now, Variety reports that Holt has already lined up her next genre project, as she’s set to star in a film called This Is Not a Test, which is described as “The Breakfast Club meets 28 Weeks Later.”
Adam MacDonald will be directing the apocalyptic horror thriller, which is based on a YA novel by bestselling author Courtney Summers. The story centers on Sloane and four other students who take cover in Cortege High to escape a world plagued by the infected. As danger relentlessly pounds on the doors, Sloane begins to see the world through the eyes of people who actually want to live and takes matters into her own hands.

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland have finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie movie classic. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. The theatrical release date is June 20th, 2025… and when the film reaches the screen, Garland has said that fans will find that 28 Years Later does not conflict with the previous sequel 28 Weeks Later, even if canon isn’t something Boyle pays much attention to.
The cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). In the original film, Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself...

28 Days Later marked the second collaboration for director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland after 2000's The Beach. While the latter isn't widely seen as a seminal work for either creative, the former certainly is. The 2002 zombie thriller stars Cillian Murphy as Jim, a survivor who attempts to traverse London in search of sanctuary following the outbreak of the Rage Virus in the U.K.
Boyle and Garland returned as executive producers for the sequel, 28 Weeks Later (2007), but Boyle is now back as director and Garland as screenwriter for the upcoming 28 Years Later, which marks a reunion after 18 years of working on their own projects. In those 18 years, Boyle directed movies like Slumdog Millionaire (2008), 127 Hours (2010), and Steve Jobs (2015), while Garland moved into directing with projects like Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), and Civil War (2024). Now, it's been revealed why the pair didn't work together for so long.

28 Years Later will retcon the last movie's ending, which means one huge mystery in the franchise may never get solved. The upcoming project will follow a group of survivors living off the mainland in the UK. The cast for 28 Years Later is already shaping up to be a spectacular affair, including the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes. With the "rage virus" growing stronger, the new chapter in the post-apocalyptic world could be the most compelling story yet. However, a recent interview with Empire reveals the rest of the world remains unaffected by the outbreak.
The writer for 28 Years Later has since addressed the confusing canon after making the decisive move to ignore its predecessors. The final scene of 28 Weeks Later shows a mass of infected in the streets of Paris, suggesting that the outbreak has spread to other countries — an international epidemic that 28 Years Later will overlook.

The filmmakers behind 28 Years Later have explained its connection to the previous installment's ending. The original 2002 movie 28 Days Later introduced a rage virus that transformed the majority of the UK's population into zombie-like disease-spreaders. While the virus had largely burned out by the end of the movie, repopulation efforts in 2007's 28 Weeks Later saw it spread once more, ending with a sequence of Infected running through Paris. In the upcoming 28 Years Later, while the rage virus has affected the outside world somewhat, it is once more primarily isolated to the UK, which has been quarantined.
In the newest print edition of Empire magazine, they ran an interview about 28 Years Later with Garland, Boyle, and producer Andrew Macdonald. While Garland explained that the new movie is "not in conflict" with 28 Weeks Later, the idea of canon is "not a very Danny Boyle word." Macdonald says that "Britain has paused,...

The fact that Cillian Murphy's Jim is not returning in 28 Years Later is disappointing, but it will make the second and third films in the upcoming trilogy more exciting. Murphy played the leading role in 2002's 28 Days Later, the franchise's first movie. However, he did not return for 2007's 28 Weeks Later. This is why it was exciting when it was revealed that Murphy would return for the trilogy that will continue the long-stagnant franchise. However, it has been revealed that Murphy will not appear in the first film in the trilogy, the upcoming 28 Years Later.
28 Years Later was written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, the same people who wrote and directed the original 2002 film. The story of 28 Years Later will follow a group of survivors living on an island in the United Kingdom years after the zombie outbreak began. The cast of...

Over two decades after the release of the genre-defining zombie film 28 Days Later, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are returning to the realm of horror with the long-awaited 28 Years Later. Essentially helping to jump-start the zombie craze of the 2000s, 28 Days Later follows an average bicycle courier named Jim (Cillian Murphy) who awakens from a month-long coma to find all of London has been besieged by a zombie rage virus. Eschewing the tropes of earlier zombie media, the walkers of 28 Days Later were faster, meaner, and more frightening than their predecessors.
Though Garland and Boyle were only involved peripherally, a sequel was released in 2007 entitled 28 Weeks Later which continued the post-apocalyptic story and was well-received. Meanwhile, the 28 Days Later franchise helped to bring the zombie film back into vogue, and is directly responsible for movies like the Dawn of the Dead remake, spoofs like Shaun of the Dead,...

Fans have been waiting over 20 years for the return of Danny Boyle's beloved zombie series, which began with 28 Days Later (2002). The movie got a sequel, 28 Weeks Later (2007), but it wasn't quite the same; it had a different director and a different vision. However, later this year, Boyle returns to helm the franchise's long-awaited return: 28 Years Later.
Naturally, with Danny Boyle back at the helm, fans had hoped to see Cillian Murphy's character, Jim, make an appearance. By the end of the first film, Jim's managed to survive, but the second film told an altogether different story, leaving his fate ambiguous. That said, 28 Years Later executive producer Andrew Macdonald has confirmed that Murphy is not involved in the new project, at least not in the first movie of this new planned trilogy. This comes after viewers were utterly convinced that he appeared as a zombie in the trailer.

When the first trailer for 28 Years Later was unleashed, it's fair to say almost everyone convinced themselves into believing they'd spotted Cillian Murphy as one of the rage-infected zombies.
That was later debunked, of course, but will we see Murphy's Jim in Danny Boyle's long-awaited follow-up to 28 Days Later and - the slightly less well-received - 28 Weeks Later? Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like this movie is going to mark an on-screen reunion for the actor and filmmaker.
Producer Andrew Macdonald tells Empire Online (via FearHQ.com), "[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line."
"He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer," Macdonald adds, "and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.

After skipping the second film in the upcoming series, Danny Boyle will be directing the end of the new 28 Years Later trilogy.

When last we checked in on Cillian Murphy's return to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's rage-virus-fueled franchise, we were debunking the fan theory that the 2024 Academy Award winner had signed on to appear as a zombie in "28 Years Later." Yes, the emaciated figure rising out of a field in the film's first trailer bore a slight resemblance to the actor, but this undead character is actually portrayed by the strikingly gaunt performer Angus Neill.
This knocked fans of the movies back to square one with their harmlessly wild speculation as to how Murphy would reappear as Jim in the long-awaited third installment in the series -- the first since 2007's "28 Weeks Later." For some, this came as a relief; while it might be momentarily amusing to write Murphy out of the universe as a zombie, surely Jim deserves better. After all, we experienced the horror...

There had never been a zombie film like 28 Days Later. Not least because its zombies technically weren’t zombies. Back in 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland ripped up the undead rulebook – with hordes of flesh-eating former-humans that weren’t actually reanimated corpses, but infected with viral rage; who didn’t shuffle and shamble like Romero’s zombies, but legged it full-pelt; and who brought societal collapse not in the United States, but across the UK. Now, Boyle and Garland are back with 28 Years Later – evolving the apocalypse decades beyond the events of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, and kicking off an expansive new saga to boot. Non-zombies are, once again, all the rage.
After years of noodling around on possible ideas for where 28 could go next, Garland eventually came to Boyle with a version he wanted to make. “It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle tells Empire.

It’s been decades now since Danny Boyle and Alex Garland first went viral. Back in 2002, the acclaimed filmmaker and then-novelist teamed up on a true horror game-changer – rewriting the foundations of the zombie genre in 28 Days Later, with its fast-running rage-infected (not-actually-zombie) hordes. Now, 18 years on from sequel 28 Weeks Later (made without Boyle and Garland), the original creators are returning with 28 Years Later – the beginning of an epic new era in the apocalyptic flesh-eating saga, with all-new characters, a fresh world to explore, and narratively-ambitious plans spanning three films. The rage has only just begun.

Danny Boyle's 2002 post-apocalyptic thriller "28 Days Later" (which was unavailable to watch for a spell) isn't technically a zombie movie. It follows the spread of a newly-concocted virus nicknamed simply the Rage Virus, which invades its victims' brains and transforms them into un-thinking, wrathful monsters. Also, their eyes turn all gross and bloodshot. The "zombies" in "28 Days Later" are really just people with their human qualities removed and their rage pumped up to a thousand. Unlike most movie zombies, however, the infected people run fast and growl loudly. It was "28 Days Later" that sparked the still-raging "slow zombies vs. fast zombies" debate among horror-philes.

The trailer for Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later has absolutely blown up since it was released a few weeks ago. It’s quickly become the most anticipated movie of 2025 for many horror fans, with a sequel also set for a January 2026 release. However, until recently, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later has been unavailable for streaming and has been out of print on Blu-ray due to rights issues. Why? It’s because Sony, who is distributing the sequels, acquired the rights to the original film, which was first distributed by Fox Searchlight (now owned by Disney), and had it pulled (although the sequel – 28 Weeks Later – which Disney owns outright – is still available). Now, with the 28 Years Later trailer reinvigorating interest in the franchise, Sony has finally re-released the original film to streaming services like iTunes, albeit in a basic HD transfer, which might surprise fans who’ve been anticipating a 4K re-release.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth tells the shocking true story of a couple’s quest for justice after their daughter is killed in a deadly terrorist attack, and it has a great cast to bring its real-life characters to the screen. The five-part miniseries, airing on Peacock in the U.S. and Sky Atlantic in the UK, is adapted from the 2021 book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice by Jim Swire and Peter Biddulph. It chronicles Swire’s attempts to bring the perpetrators to justice after his daughter Flora is killed on Pan Am Flight 103.

The first trailer for 28 Years Later was released, sparking excitement for the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, coming in the summer of 2025. There has already been a lot of buzz among fans since the 28 Years Later trailer includes several shocking reveals that point toward major changes for the franchise going forward. Additionally, since this new movie is intended to be the first in a trilogy, 28 Years Later will certainly feature an interesting new story and cast that can be stretched out over those films.

Sony has already set a release date for the second film in their newly revamped 28 Days trilogy — 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple — which will hit theaters on Jan. 16, 2026.

The second film in the “28 Years Later” trilogy, “The Bone Temple,” has landed a Jan. 16, 2026 domestic release date from Columbia Pictures.
The project’s MLK weekend release comes just six months after the first trilogy entry “28 Years Later,” which is slated for June 20. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes star in that film, which shot back-to-back with “The Bone Temple.”
“It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,” the “28 Years Later” official synopsis reads. “One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. The 28 Years Later trailer debuted with record-breaking numbers, and it served as a stark reminder of just how extensive Alex Garland's recent body of work is. The English screenwriter has evolved into one of the most well-respected writers in cinema since his feature debut with 28 Days Later, a film that many regard as one of the foundational horror movies of the last 30 years. While he was only involved in rewrites for the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, Garland will return to the 28 Days Later universe as the primary screenwriter for 28 Years Later and its in-development sequel.
Historically, Garland's writing and directing projects have been pretty well spread out, typically with at least two years in between movie releases that he's worked on. However, that cadence changed in 2024, as Garland suddenly became involved with a number of projects seemingly at the same time. Part of that is...

More like 22 years later, amirite? “28 Days Later,” Danny Boyle’s seminal zombie horror movie from 2002, is finally being made available for digital rental and purchase after spending years in streaming limbo.
Sony on Monday, December 16 released the trailer for “28 Years Later,” the upcoming sequel in the franchise that reunites Boyle with screenwriter Alex Garland. The movie looks awesome — even if the corpse of Cillian Murphy has seen better days (check out the 1:48 mark in the trailer to see what we’re talking about).
But the real surprise was that “28 Days Later” is being rescued from that purgatory where it was stuck for so long. The film will be made available on digital rental and purchase via PVOD on Dec. 18 and is available for pre-order immediately.

For years, a Cillian Murphy horror classic has remained almost impossible to watch. In the age of streaming, where every piece of media ever made is at our fingertips, that seems like a downright scandal. Thankfully, it's one that will soon be rectified, as this particular piece of "lost" horror media is finally getting a full digital release.
The film is of course, Danny Boyle's seminal pandemic/zombie horror flick "28 Days Later" — a project credited with launching nothing short of a zombie movie renaissance, making its absence from streaming, digital, and even modern physical formats all the more perplexing. What's more, aside from exhuming the corpse of the long-dead zombie horror genre, this 2002 feature was made for a meager $8 million and ended up grossing almost $83 million worldwide. Sadly, the fact that "28 Days Later" was funded by a multitude of sources but distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures made...

Exclusive: The 24-hour traffic for the 28 Years Later trailer was so massive, that in response, Sony is releasing the original 2002 Danny Boyle directed zombie movie, 28 Days Later on digital Dec. 18 for purchase and rental. This is all because of the rabid fan response. 28 Years Later is a follow-up to 28 Days Later.
Not only was the 28 Years Later trailer the most watched horror trailer in 2024 at 60.2M global views, but it’s also the second biggest trailer of all-time behind It Chapter Two. Currently, the 28 Years Later trailer has racked up 146.1M global views.
In addition, the viewership for 28 Years Later was higher than the first trailer drops of The Nun, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Halloween, as well as from this year, Smile 2 and Nosferatu (26.4M views).
Duly note these figures come from WaveMetrix and do not include TikTok views. Why? Because a studio trailer buy on TikTok can erratically mushroom viewing stats. Back out TikTok, keeps the competitive social media measuring field equal.
The 28 horror franchise were originally released respectively by Searchlight Pictures and Fox Atomic labels at the former 20th Century Fox, the two films grossing a near combined $150M at the global box office. Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris starred in 28 Days Later, while Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner and Robert Carlye starred in the sequel, 28 Weeks Later.
Sony prevailed in winning the revamped franchise 28 Years Later with Boyle reteaming with scribe Alex Garland and star Murphy with Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell joining. The budget for the new movies are in the range of $75 million. In addition to Boyle and Garland, producers on 28 Years include Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, the former head of Fox Searchlight Pictures. Garland is penning each installment in the new franchise.
The original 28 Days Later takes place in a world where animal rights activists have freed a group of infected chimpanzees to horrifying results. Murphy’s bicycle courier wakes up from a coma in a deserted London hospital 28 days later to find that the world has been overrun with zombies.

The 2002 Danny Boyle and Alex Garland film 28 Days Later undeniably changed the zombie horror genre forever, yet it's still surprisingly hard to find. This post-apocalyptic zombie flick featured Cillian Murphy’s breakout role and was the first to successfully re-imagine the classic George A. Romero slow-walkers, creating unconventional and terrifyingly fast zombies. The film further redefined tropes with the use of a final boy rather than a final girl, as well as the Rage virus outbreak source killing and reanimating the living into the Infected, as opposed to only taking effect on the dead.
28 Days Later received the 2003 “Best Horror Film” Saturn Award along with an array of other accolades, as well as an impressive worldwide box office gross of $82,719,885. It's since reached iconic status, and the film boasts an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. With this amount of critical acclaim, it's worth wondering why it's so hard to watch.

The first trailer for Sony’s horror tentpole “28 Years Later” went viral not only because it marked the return of the zombie horror franchise after 17 years but also because of a one-second shot of an emaciated zombie that looked awfully like Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who starred in 2002’s “28 Days Later” and is rumored to be returning for the new installment.
Murphy starred in 2002’s “28 Days Later” as Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma to discover an apocalyptic London that has been destroyed by a zombie virus. By now, you've probably seen the 28 Years Later trailer. Many people are clamoring over one particular still that appears to show a desiccated Cillian Murphy. Murphy, who starred in the 2002 film as bicycle courier Jim, will return in some capacity, and the trailer seems to indicate he might have fallen victim to the Rage Virus... or something else entirely.
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are also returning for this sequel, the start of a new trilogy that will debut in June 2025. “28 Years Later,” the long-in-the-works sequel to zombie horror movies “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later,” is coming to theaters next summer, but Sony is already building anticipation. On Tuesday, the studio released an intense trailer for the film. Director Danny Boyle (Academy Award winner for “Slumdog Millionaire”) and screenwriter Alex Garland (Academy Award nominee for “Ex Machina”) resume those roles for the first time since the acclaimed first film, which was released in 2002.
“28 Years Later” is set in rural England many years after the “rage virus” ravaged the world, turning the infected into fast, aggressive zombies, which was innovative in the first film, as up to that point zombies had generally been depicted in their slow, shuffling traditional state. “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,...

Although the trailer for 28 Years Later only features a few glimpses of the 28 Days Later sequel’s island setting, it is easy to find out more about this real-life location. 2025’s upcoming 28 Years Later sees director Danny Boyle return to the world of 28 Days Later, his 2002 collaboration with screenwriter Alex Garland. That seminal zombie horror saw a quartet of survivors dodging murderous victims of the Rage virus and fascist soldiers alike, and the hit spawned a sequel in 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. Already, 28 Years Later’s story is bound to be very different.

The zombie film 28 Days Later came out way back in 2002, and fans have never been quite able to let it go. These aren't the slow, ambling zombies we're used to from stuff like The Walking Dead or Night of the Living Dead; the zombies in 28 Days Later were fast, angry and focused. We got a sequel movie called 28 Weeks Later in 2007, but it didn't involve the original creative team. Now, over two decades after the original, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are back in the driver's seat for 28 Years Later, which picks up after the zombie apocalypse has properly devastated society, as zombie apocalypses tend to do.
Sony dropped the officially trailer for 28 Years Later earlier today, and it is properly scary, particularly when it's underscored by an unsettling reading of Rudyard Kipling’s 1903 poem “Boots.” We characters played by the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson,...

Zombie movie action soundtracked by the unhinged vinyl screeches of Boots, Rudyard Kipling’s evocation of soldiers in battle? It’s a match made in horror movie heaven
If you’re honest with yourself, you probably weren’t all that excited about 28 Years Later when you first heard about it. After all, as entertaining as 2002’s 28 Days Later was, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later demonstrated all the signs of diminishing returns. It wasn’t as scary. It wasn’t as memorable. And it turns out that things just weren’t as interesting six months after a zombie outbreak as they were four weeks after. By rights, 28 Years Later should continue this trend. And, when it comes out, that might still prove to be the case. As of now, though, it’s just about the most exciting film of 2025. And this is entirely down to its trailer.

If ever there was a franchise that deserved a third part, it is Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's "Days Later..." concept. The first one, 28 Days Later... was the pop cultural birth of both the 'fast zombie' as well as studio level digital cinema. The second film, a beautiful and profoundly underrated hybrid of intimate family drama, action, and gory as all get out horror, 28 Weeks Later, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, upped the scale (and the intensity) as sequels often do, and was exceptional at it. It has taken some time, but Danny Boyle returns to the director's chair for a third entry, and Alex Garland...

The world got a rude awakening this morning by way of the brand new trailer for "28 Years Later," which somehow makes the Teletubbies even scarier than they already were. That's what you get when director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reunite for a sequel to their pandemic movie nightmare "28 Days Later," which they created together over two decades ago. The pair are joined here by an incredible lineup of onscreen talent too, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Feinnes.
While the footage features plenty of folks on the run and trying to avoid getting nibbled or nicked by Rage infected locals (as you would expect), the most jarring thing about the "28 Years Later" trailer is the unsettling audio accompanying it. Rather than using the now iconic "28 Days Later" score by John Murphy to ramp up the stress levels,...
