    Interesting but strangely unsatisfying

Grace follows her mother from door to door, unhappily and silently holding the books while her mother tries to tell strangers about her love for Jesus and her beliefs as a Jehovah's Witness. Whenever they go to a darkened doorway they meet a quiet and unusual man and go into his home. Will Grace and her mother realise too late where they have gone? From the title I thought this would be about Grace as a character and what it is like to grow up slightly oppressed within a belief system that you were born into as opposed to decided to follow. At the same time it appeared to be pretty judgemental on the religious groups that organise evangelism – where the heart and people's lives are less important than getting numbers. However in the latter stages it became about the struggle within a paedophile (I assume) to not give in to his desires. All these themes were very interesting and were the reason I kept watching; however none of them are actually done that well and it feels more like a mishmash of ideas rather than a nice flowing film. It is a shame because it does have a good sense of tension and held me well, but the end result is rather unsatisfying.

The cast are so-so and this may be down to the fact that the film was quite mixed in its directions. Cavanah convinces with his internal struggles but the material gives him nowhere human to go and the direction his character takes betrays Cavanah's work. The little girl is too blank and her mother was too much of a one-note deal. The direction gives the film a rather dated look that isn't visually appealing. Overall this is an interesting film but it doesn't follow through on any of its ideas and ends up being strangely unsatisfying.
