The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Alongside exclusives like Secret Santa and Night of the Missing and such classics as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, here are five Christmas horror recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Christmas Evil
Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

Strategic Partners, a presentation of the Atlantic Film Festival, will host a visionary line-up of speakers including keynote addresses presented by Tornasol Films Producer Mariela Besuievsky and Vimeo Director of Audience Development and Content Operations, Peter Gerard, as part of the event taking place September 11 - 14 in Halifax.
"With our spotlight shining brightly on Spain, Latin America, and the USA at Strategic Partners in 2014, having Mariela as our esteemed Opening Keynote couldn't be more relevant,” says Director of Strategic Partners, Laura MacKenzie. “Her impressive background as a producer, as well as her co-production experience around the globe (not to mention her incredible presence in the room) will ensure an inspirational conversation."
Originally from Uruguay, Besuievsky has produced over 90 films and has been a partner at Tornasol Films in Spain since 1999. She is renowned for her work on illustrious films such as "The Secret in Their Eyes" (winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010), "The Oxford Murders" (starring Elijah Wood and John Hurt) and Oscar nominated "Son of the Bride" (Best Film at the Argentinean Film Critics Association Awards 2002) among many others. Besuievsky has a rich history of bringing raw, character-driven stories to the screen.
"I'm very excited to attend Strategic Partners this fall! It is an optimal place for networking and providing an opportunity to find global partners,” says Besuievsky. “It is also a perfect environment to exchange impressions with other industry professionals, and to find new ideas and different points of view for your projects."
Vimeo Director of Audience Development and Content Operations Peter Gerard will also deliver a highly anticipated keynote address. Gerard set the stage for his impressive career by founding Accidental Media in Edinburgh and leading this groundbreaking company for more than ten years.
In 2010, Gerard founded Distrify to establish “direct-to-fan” digital film sales and in 2014, Peter moved to New York to join Vimeo, where he now manages marketing partnerships within Vimeo’s Audience Development team. His focus is on growing the Vimeo on Demand solution for independent film sales.
“I am excited by the opportunity to meet talented producers at Strategic Partners and talk about the possibilities of online marketing and sales for films and series," says Gerard. "The Vimeo On Demand catalogue is growing fast and we are empowering creators to connect with their global audiences through direct distribution."
"There's no doubt the digital first conversation will be overarching at Strategic Partners this year, and therefore I'm very excited to present industry leader, Peter Gerard, to deliver a keynote address on the topic of Producers as Entrepreneurs," says Mackenzie. "Vimeo's foray into original content with the series High Maintenance further solidifies the commitment and platform of self-distribution to supporting producers and content creation - this is exactly who we want represented at Strategic Partners!"
Each year, top Canadian and international industry players, including producers, investors, sales agents, funding agencies, broadcasters and distributors are selected to attend Strategic Partners. Offering over 1,000 pre-scheduled 1-2-1 meetings, co-production focused roundtable sessions, cutting edge panels, visionary keynote speakers, and screenings and receptions – Strategic Partners is a convergence of talent and innovation, producing tangible results.

The film is directed by Álex de la Iglesia from a screenplay he and Jorge Guerricaechevarría wrote.
When a bank heist in the city doesn’t all go according to plan, José and Tony find themselves in possession of some hostages and speeding through the mountains of Spain, hoping to quietly slip over the border. Not wanting to give up his custody days to his ex-wife, José has also brought his son along, for both the robbery and the ride. Little do they know that this is only the beginning of their troubles. When they decide to make a stop in a small tavern in the Basque countryside, the group encounters a series of local wackos.

Player Piano: Interesting Ideas Churn Into Nonsensical Slog in Mira’s Third Outing
Back with his first film since the 2010 potboiler, Agnosia, Spanish director Eugenio Mira returns to filming in English with Grand Piano, an ambitiously designed film that desperately tries to work around a central gimmick. Featuring inspired use of several musical selections and slick editing, which seem designed to pick up the slack for the lack of dramatic tension in a laughable narrative that only becomes more ludicrous as more details become revealed, its initial set-up is quite certainly engaging in that it creates a curiosity to want to know more. That’s saying a lot considering there are several obnoxious supporting characters and wooden performances that muddle the mood early on.

Álex de la Iglesia is quite possibly my favorite filmmaker. Seriously, I cannot think of another director whose entire body of work I find quite as remarkable. The Day of the Beast (which should be its own entry in The Unseen, as it never had a Us release) is my favorite horror comedy ever. The Baby’s Room scared the hell out me and should not have been stashed away in the bulk title release of 6 Films to Keep You Awake. The Last Circus is brutally beautiful. Even his more “commercial” film, The Oxford Murders, is a meticulously woven masterpiece. Iglesia has recently appeared in horror news both for his inclusion in The ABCs of Death 2 and also for the insane trailer of his upcoming film Witching and Bitching (watch the trailer here). But the Iglesia film I’m discussing in this article is even more obscure than these rather...

#81. Nacho Vigalondo’s Open Windows
Gist: A man (Elijah Wood) obsessed with an abducted actress (played by adult crossover star Sasha Grey) attempts to discover what’s happened to her, following clues and footage made available to him over an iPhone. Vigalondo, who says the feature was inspired by De Palma’s Blow Out (which happens to be a film heavily inspired by Blow Up), will see us following the action from the Pov of a laptop connected to the internet, and thus, the audience will become the protagonist.
Prediction: We’re predicting a Directors’ Fortnight slot for Vigalondo’s latest, and it would be his first title to premiere at Cannes. His 2007 breakout hit Time Crimes landed him a Toronto premiere for his 2011 follow-up, Extraterrestrial. Though filmed in Spain, this is the director’s first film headlined by American stars, and we hope that Elijah Wood, who seems to...

While Elijah Wood could just sit back and count his Frodo money on an island somewhere, the actor is using that success to try different things, even if they don't always work out (we're looking at you "The Oxford Murders"). He's taken a strong indie route, lending his talents to a variety of movies including the rom-com "Celeste & Jesse Forever," the absurd comedy "Revenge For Jolly!," the horror remake "Maniac" and more. But perhaps one of his more succesful ventures has been on the small screen with FX series "Wilfred" and he's hoping he can bring that magic to the big screen. Wood will star in "Wilfred" director Randall Einhorn's feature debut "Late Bloomer." Based on the memoir "Man Made" by Ken Baker, the movie will tell the incredible true story of a man who finds out at 30 he hasn't fully gone through puberty, and after a medical procedure,...

This year's Tribeca Film Festival carries one of its strongest line-ups in years. In addition to films from Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Sundance and Berlin circuit, there's also a wealth of U.S. premieres or lesser-known festival movies in the line-up that look just as promising this time around; after a relatively weak SXSW, it looks like the East Coast is getting some of the good stuff.
Below, you'll find 15 films that seem among the most intriguing Tribeca has to offer this year. Of course, we can't speak for their quality as yet, but they certainly look promising at this point at time. And for the record, we haven't included the high-profile opening and closing films -- "The Five-Year Engagement" and "The Avengers" -- partly because they're getting more than enough attention elsewhere, and partly because we've already seen both (although can't review them just yet -- keep your eyes peeled...

Melancholia Tops European Film Awards, Lars von Trier Bypassed, Colin Firth Beats Jean Dujardin [Photo: Stephen Frears.] The Artist, a favorite for the 2012 Oscar, won a single Efa Award: Best European Composer, Ludovic Bource, who thanked the film's perky dog, Uggie, for providing the necessary inspiration. Writer-director Michel Hazanavicius wasn't even nominated; star Jean Dujardin lost to Colin Firth. Other Efa 2011 winners include Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne's screenplay for The Kid with a Bike; Wim Wenders' documentary Pina, Germany's submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar; Tono Errando, Javier Mariscal, and Fernando Trueba's bolero-rhythmed animated feature and potential Oscar contender Chico & Rita; Terry Gilliam's short The Wholly Family, about an American family visiting Naples; and Hans Van Nuffel's Dutch-Belgian drama Oxygen, the European Discovery of 2011. John Hurt makes a convincingly cerebral spook in the new film of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. But in real life, if he were in charge of MI6, we'd be in trouble. He's too gregarious, too eager and far too puckish
John Hurt doesn't think he'd have made a good spy. "I'd have been terrible! Too transparent by half!" He scoffs happily, gimlet eyes a-twinkle. But surely actors and operatives share certain skills?
A big wise head waggle. "Don't forget there are two sides to performing. Finding the truth, but you also have to be transparent enough for the audience to see it. How many times have you seen a performance and thought: well, it seems to be meaning a great deal to you but it ain't coming across to me? It is to be shared. This isn't a grief for your own pleasure … Ah, coffee!"

The actor Anna Massey has died aged 73. We look back at her career in clips, from Peeping Tom to The Machinist
Anna Massey, who has died aged 73, had two distinct stages to her career: first as the innocent victim in the films of two master directors trying their hand at horror, and then as a wily, wide-eyed staple of period TV drama. Yet the two seemed absolutely apiece: Massey was such a singular actor, with a constant, unafraid gaze and keen intelligence, that looking back it's hard not to be struck by her curious agelessness.
Her screen debut in 1960 was as the heroine of Michael Powell's once-loathed, now-lauded Peeping Tom. She doesn't get much airtime in this trailer, but her almost bolshie naivete is startling: a clang of reality beside Carl Boehm's killer.
Twelve years later she accepted Alfred Hitchcock's invitation to all but reprise her role in "necktie murders" chiller Frenzy.

Anna Massey, a Tony nominee who played supporting roles in more than 40 movies, died of cancer on Sunday, July 3, in London. Massey was 73. The daughter of Academy Award nominee Raymond Massey (Abe Lincoln in Illinois) and sister of another Oscar nominee, Daniel Massey (Star!), Anna Massey began her acting career in the late '50s. She was nominated for a Tony for her performance in The Reluctant Debutante (1958), which was made into a movie that same year. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the movie version starred Sandra Dee as an Americanized version of the role Massey had originated in the West End and on Broadway. Massey's first film appearance also took place in 1958, in John Ford's crime drama Gideon's Day, starring Jack Hawkins. Other notable film roles, invariably supporting bigger names, include those in Michael Powell's controversial Peeping Tom (photo, 1960), with Karl Böhm as a fetishistic serial killer; Otto Preminger...

Two clowns become embroiled in a tug of war for the heart of an acrobat.
The cult director of 90s trash epics Accion Mutante, Day Of The Beast and Perdita Durango beats a desperate retreat from his recent brush with respectability via The Oxford Murders. Alex de la Iglesia's latest opus is as nuttily unpredictable as the films that made his name, veering from surreal action to nicely played romance and on to a farcically apocalyptic second half that will probably alienate as many as it will titillate.

Outside of Sin City, unless you are a fan of indie cinema you won’t have seen much of Lord of the Rings lead Elijah Wood on your screens in the eight years since that trilogy came to a close. He’s mostly spent the near decade since floating around from indie fare to box office flops that lived or died by his star power (films like Green Street and The Oxford Murders which all died, sadly) and no doubt there will be some already writing him off as the new generation’s Mark Hammil.
However the 30 year old’s failing career might be about to get something of a revival next year when he briefly reprises his role of Frodo Baggins for a nostalgic scene or two in Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth comeback movie The Hobbit and of course before that he leads his own offbeat FX comedy titled...

Empire has premiered the first teaser trailer for the upcoming horror thriller Intruders today. A closer look to the credits reveals that Spanish composer Roque Banos is listed as the film’s composer. The movie is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intact) and stars Clive Owen, Daniel Brühl, Carice van Houten, Ella Purnell and Kerry Fox. The film’s story centers on an 11-year-old girl who is forced to confront childhood demons. The English-language project is a American, British and Spanish co-production and was shot in London and Madrid last summer. Among the film’s producers is Belen Atienza (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Orphonage, Che) who previously produced the Viggo Mortensen-starring adventure biopic Alatriste, which Banos scored back in 2006. Intruders is set for a release on October 7, 2011 in the UK and Spain and a domestic release is expected around the same time.

Have you seen The Day of the Beast? The incredible film by director Álex de la Iglesia, who also helmed the recent The Oxford Murders? No? Well, that could be because we're still waiting for a proper release of it here in the States. Oh well, at least his latest movie is on its way!
Magnolia Pictures' Magnet Releasing label has acquired Álex de la Iglesia's Spanish-language The Last Circus (Balada Triste de Trompeta) for release later this year. Check out the plot crunch and trailer below.
Synopsis
1937, Spain is in the midst of the brutal Spanish Civil War. A "Happy" circus clown is interrupted mid-performance and forcibly recruited by a militia. Still in his costume, he is handed a machete and led into battle against National soldiers, where he single-handedly massacres an entire platoon. This absurd and disturbing scenario raises the curtain on a twisted tale of love,...

The Day of the Beast and Accion Mutante 's Alex de la Iglesia's 2010 effort The Last Circus , a bizarre-looking romp, is coming to the U.S. courtesy of Magnet Releasing. Written by Iglesia, the film kicks off during the Spanish Civil War, where members of a circus are forced to fight a platoon, in full circus garb. The story picks up many years later to focus on the rivalry that simmers between a sad clown (the son of one of the circus performers who saw combat) and a happy clown and what the two will do to win the affections of a woman. Nice to see Iglesia back in this sort of territory after The Oxford Murders . Stay tuned for release date news as it comes in.

Several films and TV shows have sweated to put an x rating into algebra, but it's mathematics that's sexy, not mathematicians
This week saw the North American premiere of Rites of Love and Math, the film by Berkeley mathematician Ed Frenkel. After receiving complaints about the trailer, which features both formulae and naked female flesh, Berkeley's mathematical sciences research institute decided to withdraw its support for the film.
This is not the greatest smackdown in the history of mathematics – the Newton-Leibniz debate over who invented the calculus ranks a tad higher – but it may surprise you that it is not even the first controversy involving mathematics and sex. While you may not have realised it when you were studying for your algebra finals, mathematics and sex have come together often.

I’ve been a huge salivating fan of director Alex de la Iglesia’s work since I stumbled across a bootleg VHS copy of “Accion Mutante” at a local independent video store way back in the mid-90′s. I’ve supported every film he’s created, that is, until I was unfortunate enough to catch “The Oxford Murders”. It’s not that it’s a bad film, per say, but it’s certainly one of the most boring efforts I’ve had the pleasure of watching over the past few years. However, it would appear that Iglesia is back on track with “The Last Circus”, which seems to have the aesthetic of the director’s previous films. If you’re at all curious about the project, the teaser trailer has been embedded below. Thanks to Quiet Earth for the scoop. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.
Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.
Next year October needs to begin in August.
Human Centipede: First Sequence
Directed by Tom Six
Human Centipede: First Sequence (review) was a sensation ever since its first mention. Stephen Colbert even talked about it at the 2010 Emmys Awards broadcast! The premise cannot be simpler. Two pretty American girls are on a road trip through Europe.

"Fade to Black" (2010)
Directed by Oliver Parker
Released by Image Entertainment
It looks like we'll have to update our list of actors who've played Orson Welles with this long-delayed drama from "The Importance of Being Earnest" director Parker, which stars Danny Huston as the "Touch of Evil" auteur who gets caught up in a murder mystery all his own on 1948's "Black Magic" in Italy when he finds out his name is on a hit list. Christopher Walken, Diego Luna and Paz Vega co-star.
"30 Days of Night: Dark Days" (2010)

Rare for a direct-to-video sequel, original author Steve Niles returns to co-write this follow-up to the 2007 graphic novel adaptation about a vampire attack in Alaska. "I really hate clowns," Álex de la Iglesia admitted mere moments into his introduction for "The Last Circus" (or "Balada Triste de Trompeta," which translates to "Ballad of the Sad Trumpet") his epic, darkly comic story of two clowns who fight for the love of an acrobat during the tumultuous era of fascism that followed the Spanish Civil War. Joined by Carolina Bang who plays the object of the clowns' affection, de la Iglesia made the rare trip to the States for Fantastic Fest co-founder Harry Knowles, who geeked out while telling how he was first introduced to the director's work when someone slipped him a sixth generation VHS copy of de la Iglesia's "Day of the Beast." He even added that de la Iglesia had an inadvertent hand in creating Fantastic Fest since it was after a screening of "800 Bullets" in Sitges that he and Tim League first discussed...

Baroque, absurd and grotesque, Alex de la Iglesia's Balada Triste is a sprawling, epic beast, one that piles image upon image in an often frantic attempt to purge the memory of the Franco era from the system. And though the film becomes a bit of an unwieldy mess at points, unable to fully support the full scope of what de la Iglesia is attempting it still remains one of the most vital and compelling pieces of work in the career of one of the world's most unique and unusual talents.

For the second straight weekend, The Girl Who Played with Fire led all specialty releases. This was less due to its own strength and instead a result of disappointing debuts from a set of high-profile new entries, including Middle Men and Flipped. The Girl Who Played with Fire held well again, off 13 percent to $471,459. Through its fifth weekend, it has grossed $4.56 million, and, while that's still more than its predecessor The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had made at the same point, the gap narrowed. Middle Men, which is based on a true story about the founding of the online porn industry, made just $325,641 at 252 locations, translating to a poor per site average of $1,292. Distributor Paramount Vantage currently has the movie scheduled to expand on Aug. 20, though weak initial attendance often thwarts such plans. Showing little signs of fatigue, Winter's Bone was down only four percent to $296,753. In nearly two months in theaters,...

Álex de la Iglesia always has to be the odd man out. At the American Cinematheque's Recent Spanish Cinema series last year, de la Iglesia's thriller "The Oxford Murders" was the lone English-language film shown, serving as a linguistic break from Goya winners like Jose Luis Cuerda's "The Blind Sunflowers" and Agustín Díaz Yanes' "Just Walking."
The film's also a departure from the wild comedies de la Iglesia has become known for, like the cutthroat salesman competition comedy "El Crimen Ferpecto" and the theme park-set spaghetti western "800 Bullets." (If you haven't seen either, we won't be offended if you run out to rent them now.)
Thanks to the questionable state of "Oxford"'s one-time American distributor ThinkFilm, the screening was a rare opportunity to see the Elijah Wood-John Hurt thriller on a U.S. big screen -- up until now.

De La Iglesia Lands Spain's National Cinema Prize
Director Alex De La Iglesia has been honoured with the prestigious National Cinema Prize in his native Spain.
Officials at the Icaa Spanish Film Institute have bestowed the high honour upon the filmmaker, whose feature The Oxford Murders became the highest-grossing Spanish film in the U.K. in 2008.
The prize, which aims to reward the most outstanding contribution to Spanish cinema over the past year, lands de la Iglesia a cheque for 30,000 Euros ($37,940/£24,930) and also recognises his 17-year career and his work as the president of the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a post he's held since 2009.

Shot in 2006, the British thriller was released in the U.K. in 2008, and is finally receiving a limited release in the USA on August 6. Directed by Alex De La Iglesia, The Oxford Murders pairs Wood with John Hurt as an Oxford grad student and professor, respectively, who attempt to solve an elderly woman's murder when they realize it is the work of a serial killer. The clip below shows Wood and Hurt convince a local detective of their findings.
