George A Romero's zombie classic Day of the Dead will be remade by the team behind the recent Texas Chainsaw 3D.
Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell's Campbell Grobman Films have snapped up the rights to the '80s movie and will reboot the property for release in 2014.
"Zombie movies are really popular right now, and we feel we could do this right," Campbell told the Los Angeles Times.
She added: "We want to keep it as close to the Romero version as possible, to make sure that his fans are happy. These are not going to be zombies climbing walls and doing back flips like in World War Z."
Day of the Dead was originally released in 1985 following on from the success of Romero's earlier zombie films Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. The movie followed a group of survivors holed up in an underground...

Campbell plays Rachel, a health department worker who teams with her estranged husband, Mta official Jason (Patrick Muldoon) to stop a giant spider invasion of New York, in the Tibor Takacs-directed film. It’s the latest in a string of genre roles for the actress, also including the 2001 Maniacs movies, Drive Angry and the remakes of Day Of The Dead and The Wicker Man. She was also an executive producer on this year’s Texas Chainsaw 3D.
Fangoria: How did you become involved with Spiders?
Christa Campbell: Tibor and I have worked together on a few other films [among them Mansquito and Kraken: Tentacles Of The Deep], and when Spiders was being talked about, he asked me if I would play Rachel. I read the script and loved it, so I was immediately in.

Genre marketer Fourth Castle Media and talent management/production company Invalesco Entertainment announce the creation of Thingmaker Entertainment, a microbudget monster movie production and distribution label. Read on for the details!
The announcement comes during this weekend's Son of Monsterpalooza, a popular Los Angeles convention for fans of old school monsters and practical special effects. Invalesco’s M. Dal Walton, a seasoned film executive with credits such as Rambo, Narc, and the remakes of The Wicker Man and Day of the Dead, says of the new company: “New technologies for production and distribution have made it viable to create new genre movies specifically for their fans without watering down the experience by trying to be all things to all people. Thingmaker Entertainment will produce and distribute movies for fans of the z-grade, zero-budget drive-in monster movie classics of yesteryear. Our focus will be on the monster: creative, exciting, and well executed.

Excision means removal by cutting cut. With that being said maybe you’ve learned something, so this review won’t be a complete waste of time. I may even be able to save you a bit of time by telling you that Excision is definitely worth seeing. Reading the rest of this review won’t spoil its rather knotted twist, but if you were looking for a movie to watch that’ll get under your skin, make for a great conversation starter after a few cocktails and leave you with a permanent case of “what the fuck was that?” I can say you’ve found it. It isn’t a horror movie no matter how many times I see it referred to as a horror comedy. You know me. I’ve pretty got a one track brain so when I choose to review a non-horror picture it probably means there...

Some big celebrity Halloween parties went down last night all around the country -- and we've got all the scary, sexy and over-the-top costumes. Dia de los Muertos was a big theme on Friday in NYC, where Bette Midler hosted a Day of the Dead-themed bash attended by Debra Messing , Stevie Wonder and John McEnroe . In L.A., Paris Hilton looked cute in a She-Ra costume, sister Nicky was a cat and David Arquette made a convincing pimp. AnnaLynne McCord went Big in Las Vegas, where she and sisters Rachel and Angel dressed in some Marie Antoinette costumes. " Jersey Shore " star Jwoww also parties in Sin City, where she (naturally) wore an outfit that showed off her biggest assets. Check out all the costumes above! Read more...

An American Pie for American Horror Story
In the year 1999 the two somewhat iconic films, American Beauty and American Pie, launched model and actress Mena Suvari into the public eye. You’ll see her next in another American title, American Horror Story. Imagine that!
Suvari is coming to the oh so scary new series as a lady with some sort of connection to the Harmon house. The character’s nickname is super spooky. It’s The Black Dahlia. Say what? Yes, you heard me. The Black Dahlia, as I’m sure you know from the movies about her, was the high-profile murder victim circa 1947. You know, the murder that was never really solved. It would seem we will get to see a new, and hopefully frightening and creative theory as to what may have happened to the infamous lady. That will all happen during this season’s ninth episode.

Ving Rhames, man. He's turning into this generation's Ken Foree in terms of being on tap to kill zombies (though Foree will always be more badass). In any event, the trailer for The Asylum's Zombie Apocalypse is here, and we have every dreaded pixel of it awaiting your consumption.
The award-winning co-star of the Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead remakes leads Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow), Lesley Ann Brandt (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), Johnny Pacar (“Make It or Break It”), and Eddie Steeples (“My Name is Earl”) into battle against the walking dead in this gore-soaked zomsploitation flick from writers Craig Engler and Brooks Peck and Species: The Awakening director Nick Lyon.
The Asylum’s Zombie Apocalypse infects DVD shelves on December 27th. We’ll keep you posted on this one.

Modern-day zombie killer Ving Rhames, who appeared in the remakes of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, is about to beat the snot out of the undead once again ... and this time he's working for The Asylum! Yes, the company that brought you Snakes on a Train and Almighty Thor is digging into the zombie game. Their Zombie Apocalypse, which will star Mr. Rhames and Taryn Manning, won't hit the shelves until December, but our pals at Dread Central have some rather gory stills to share with you. The plot? After 90 percent of the world's population has been destroyed by a zombie plague, a group of survivors find themselves battling their way to the island of Catalina. Novel! As a guy who's seen an inordinate number of Asylum titles, I'm slightly hopeful...

Those crazy dudes from The Asylum are at it again, but this time they just might have something on their hands. Hailed as one of their biggest productions to date, Zombie Apocalypse is currently filming for its late December 27th DVD bow, with star Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction) who seemingly just can’t get out of a zombie apocalypse, as seen in Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead remakes.
Months after a zombie plague has wiped out 90 percent of the American population, a small group of survivors fight their way cross-country to a rumored refuge on the island of Catalina.
Zombie Apocalypse is directed by Nick Lyon (Species: The Awakening). Below are some first official set stills (via Dread Central):...

I recall Ving Rhames saying in an interview around the time of the Dawn of the Dead remake’s release that he wasn’t a fan of horror movies. He must have since discovered an affinity for zombie flicks because Zombie Apocalypse marks his third go-round with the living dead.
Now here’s the part that might be most surprising to you. The Asylum is behind this particular Zombie Apocalypse. The film is being touted as possibly their biggest to date, which should be apparent since Ving Rhames could very well be the biggest name actor the mockbuster masters have gotten to star in one of their films yet.

Despite frequently being listed among the great horror directors, Tobe Hooper will always have the hardest job of pleasing his fans. No matter what film he makes, it will always be compared to his 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. To this day it remains one of the greatest and most chilling horror films of all time and a true work of genius.
The same can‘t really be said of Crocodile or the overly goofy and unpleasant Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Yet people seem to forget Hooper is capable of making films as good as Poltergeist or Salem’s Lot. Sitting somewhere in the middle is 1981’s The Funhouse, now re-released on a deluxe Blu-ray from Arrow Video from yesterday.
Released at the peak of the early 80’s slasher film craze, The Funhouse was Hooper’s first big budget feature. Despite working with a larger budget and studio pressure, the film...

Piranha 3D ‘survivors’ Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames (wait…. didn’t he die in the first one????) and Paul Scheer (who was set to die in the original but his demise was cut out of the final print, meaning he inexplicably disappeared from the film) will now reprise their roles for the currently shooting sequel, Piranha 3Dd. Dimension sent out a press release yesterday.
Seriously though and I know this is a franchise that has no logic but just how does Ving Rhames return? Will Dr. Emmet Brown go back in time and stop him dying? Will it be a twin? (conspiracy theorists already believe his character in the Day of the Dead remake is the twin brother discussed in the Dawn of the Dead remake).
I mean clearly the implication is that he is dead. Oh wait, like Osama Bin Laden, you need a dead body shot right?

The Walking Dead (Frank Darabont and Robert Kirkman, 2010)
As a preface to this review, I have to state that I am a huge zombie fan. I love ‘em all, whether they be fast or slow, I dig my undead flesh eaters. I can recite Romero dialogue the way other, more respectable souls recite Shakespeare. For me, Fulci is right up there with Spielberg as far as being important to film history, and I can even find good bits in “House of the Dead.” Yes, I’m a dedicated zombie fan, and I’ve been in heaven the last few years as the undead trend keeps rolling.
At times the popularity of the subgenre threatened to lose momentum, but then certain films or books came along and brought it back. Zombies were all but forgotten in the 90’s but came roaring back with the Resident Evil games and then later the movies,...

Whether she’s acting in film or television, modeling for Lancome cosmetics or using her celebrity to bring awareness to a variety of causes, Mena Suvari has always been able to grab our attention. She’s come a long way from her career-making role in the film American Beauty and has since starred in films like The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh and Day of the Dead and also on television where she played Lauren Ambrose's girlfriend in the acclaimed HBO drama Six Feet Under.
In the new erotically charged indie film Hemingway’s Garden of Eden, Suvari plays Catherine, an heiress who quickly meets and marries a writer (played by Jack Huston). Upon growing bored with life and her marriage, she invites the beautiful Marita (Caterina Morino) into their lives and their bed. Do things go well from that point on? You’ll have to watch the movie and find out.

Christa Campbell combines a sizzling screen presence with a sizzling body. She is the queen of the horror film remake having starred in 2001 Maniacs, The Wicker Man and Day of the Dead. Dare I say it, but she is probably one part of the horror remake industry that I bet you will not see any horror fan complaining about what so ever. She has also accumulated a wealth of other horror film credits in a relatively short time. We here at Bdhr predict she will become a legendary presence in the horror field one day ranking alongside the scream queens of yesteryear. Here's what Christa Campbell had to say.
How did you become involved with 2001 Maniacs?
I went to an audition and got the part! It was just like that! I never thought it would become this very cool cult franchise. Its been amazing exploring this character and making these films.

On October 2nd the third annual GoreZone International Film Festival got under way at Leicester Square’s Prince Charles Cinema; and for the first time ever, Dread was on the scene to check it out. Our report follows along with condensed reviews of six of the films shown over the weekend.
Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet, Breath of Hate, Hyenas, Cyrus: Mind of a Serial Killer, New Terminal Hotel, Darfur, and Devil's Playground are all included, but first a recap of the event and awards show.
In the face of fellow Leicester Square-based festival and horror heavy hitter, Film4 Frightfest, GoreZone (or Gz, as the magazine has rebranded) would appear to be the underdog. Having experienced the festival first-hand, however, it’s pleasing to discover a level of intimacy and audience connection that is easily lost amongst the hustle and bustle of many larger profile fests, bolstered by...

2Mfos Unrated DVD ArtDirector/writer: Tim Sullivan.
2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams is a follow-up to director Tim Sullivan's previous film, 2001 Maniacs, which was released in 2005. This second film is being distributed by First Look Studios on DVD and the film stars Bill Moseley (Babysitter Wanted), Lin Shaye (Dark Moon Rising) and Chrisa Campbell (Day of the Dead). The film clocks in at a short eight-six minutes and the film is really a silly, send-up of characters and cliches from the South. More comedy than horror, 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams is a mostly fun film experience, with gratuitous nudity and gore the tools Sullivan uses to entertain.
In summary, 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams follows a group of Southern rebels and patriots who are looking for revenge after their countrymen have been killed, or mutilated in The Revolutionary War. So, this travelling group of hillbillies and rednecks tour the lower states in search of Northern victims,...

I Spit on Your Grave is a new remake of the notorious 1978 rape-revenge classic of the same name. The original is a brutal film but one that has been championed by many for the themes it explores beneath the veneer of it being a nasty exploitation picture. Will the remake do the same? Doubtful considering the caliber of recent horror remakes but at least this one’s not a Platinum Dunes remake.
Directed by Steven R. Monroe who has previous with a host of TV movies and scripted by Jeffrey Reddick who also wrote the Day of the Dead remake and worked on the Final Destination films. This doesn’t fill me with a lot of hope but I really want this to be good so will try and remain optimistic.

Wow, talk about something that doesn't need to happen. From 2005's Day of the Dead 2: Contagium and ending with 2008's Day of the Dead remake, you would think the studios would be done but this is Hollywood and if there is money to be made, money will be made on zombies backs...
According to Variety, producer James Dudelson of Taurus Entertainment, is working on yet another remake of Day of the Dead, this time in 3D. So the studio behind Creepshow 3 and Day of the Dead 2: Contagium gets another try to pay homage to George A. Rombero. We're not holding out breath. Stay tuned for more zombie in 3D news as we get it.

Everyone on this site knows how much I desperately despise re-makes of classic films. To your surprise, I am really happy about a recent movie that has been released to DVD; that movie would be the direct-to-dvd movie “ Day Of The Dead”. This film literally has an all star strutted cast which include Mena Suvari (American Pie, American Beauty, Trauma, Sugar and Spice), Nick Cannon (MTV TV Show host, Roll Bounce, Drum-Line, Men in Black II), Ving Rhames (Death Race 2: Frankenstein Lives, I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry, Idlewild, MI2) and Annalynne McCord (TV’s 90210, Fired Up!, Transporter 2).

Joanne Kelly is gearing up for the second season of Warehouse 13, the hit SyFy show in which she stars as Myka Bering, an FBI agent responsible for finding and safeguarding supernatural, sometimes legendary, artifacts. I caught up with Kelly this week, during a break from shooting her show in Toronto, and she told me a little bit about another project she has in the works, an indie thriller called Last Stop, due out in November and co-starring genre vets Mena Suvari (Day of the Dead) and Robert Picardo (pretty much every Joe Dante film ever made). Read what Kelly had to say about the film after the jump. "It was such an amazing experience," says Kelly of Last Stop. "It was with Mena Suvari, Brian...

As I drove up the winding mountain road to Big Bear, CA in the pitch-black night, I wondered, “What’s gay about the Big Bear Horror Film Festival?” Answer: just about everything.
What I didn’t realize before arriving was that a large homo contingent would be in attendance. In fact, there were so many gays in this tiny mountain village, to write “out gay ____” before each name I mention would be a chore. So I’m going to denote all the gay up in Big Bear with a “*”.
The Backstory: Several months ago Bbhf founder Michael Coulombe* pinged me via this blog with some very preliminary info on the fest. Sensing an opportunity to spread my super-important opinions around, I offered myself up as a judge for the festival. Realizing what a publicity juggernaut this blog can be, he immediately said, “Yes!” and I was on board.

A tipster calling himself "The Egg Man" is making the rounds on the genre news circuit alerting all editors of a potential director for Halloween 3D . Over the weekend, Bob Weinstein of Dimension Films revealed to the L.A. Times that they'll be moving forward on a third 3-D chapter for the summer of 2010 with a new director attached. According to "The Egg Man," that director is Steve Miner, who also helmed Halloween: H20 . Miner's credits also include Friday the 13th: Part 2 , Friday the 13th: Part 3 , which was released in 3-D, House , and Lake Placid . Since then he's been doing a lot of television work. Recently, he helmed the Day of the Dead remake. No doubt he's a seasoned genre vet and has had experience with Myers, but is the right man to...

I'd like to welcome everyone to the Official Blog for The Gatekeeper. I will be your guide for the next few months as we chat about the making of this film. A special thanks goes out to Fangoria.com for hosting this blog for us.
Now, I know what you're asking yourself. Who the hell is this guy? My name is Isaac Meisenheimer. I'm the writer/director for this little flick. Sure like any other filmmaker I've struggled with ups and downs in the attempt to get this into production, but then again how many screenplays survived through Hurricane Katrina still intact? I'm sure over the next few months I'll talk more about the events that led me to where I am now, but your here to find out about the movie not about my struggles with rising water.

Variety reports that the Circle of Confusion company is gearing up to shoot Gatekeeper, a new zombie feature, in September. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Isaac Meisenheimer, who’s done 2nd unit/assistant work on Until Death, Mad Money and the Day Of The Dead remake.
Matthew O’Leary (pictured, from Frailty and soon to be seen in Sorority Row), Lea Thompson, Judge Reinhold, Fango fave Ron Perlman and Jana Kramer from Prom Night and Laid To Rest will star in the film, in which a simple mistake leads to an undead outbreak in a small town where three friends have to save the day. “We intend to make a film in the vein of Shaun Of The Dead for American audiences,” says executive producer Stephen Emery.

One of the nice things about being a gay horror filmmaker is, after you hang around awhile, you realize you’re part of a nice little club. And eventually, it feels like you all know each other.
I first met Jeffrey Reddick at a cast and crew screening of one of my films. Paul (Hellbent) Etheredge-Ouzts brought his friend “Jeffrey” to the screening, and we chit-chatted a bit afterward. On the way home my brain added up all the stuff we talked about, and suddenly it clicked—Was that the writer of Final Destination?
Since then we’ve become friends and, in the grand tradition of Hollywood, mainly see each other at screenings and conventions. He’s a busy guy, and kinda sorta has that career that many of us indie flick filmmakers dream of—access to the people who make it happen, and big(ger) budgets.

When Tony asked me to moderate a panel on The Lair for at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors, I was thrilled. I participated in a bunch of panels at Gaylaxicon a couple years ago and had a ball because, let’s face it, I’m a bit of a ham. So the opportunity to be on a panel at a Fango con was an automatic, “Yes!”
As the date approached, I started to feel more and more nervous. I wondered if anyone would actually show up for this panel. I mean, The Lair is a fun show, but it’s on a Pay-Per-View network, and I would guess that ninety percent of its audience is more camp enthusiast than horror fanatic. Would there be any fans of The Lair actually attending the con? And more importantly, would there be any Glbt horror fans attending the con? Okay, yes, obviously...
