It's part of the mythos of Hollywood action stars that they're not afraid to do their own stunts, risk their necks, and just generally court danger in order to maintain their larger-than life mystique. Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska makes her English-language debut with The Silent Twins, the strange and remarkable story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twin sisters who only communicated with each other from 8 to later-teen years when drugs and drinking led to petty theft and an arson charge that landed them in the tightly secured medical ward of Broadmoor for 11 years before being released in the 1980s. Creating their own puppetry and dolls, poems and music, which they only broadcast for each other on a fake radio program, the “twinnies” as they were called by family fell into an odd void that became more pronounced, even when they were forced to go to separate schools at one point. And they carried on this way until becoming young women landing and in legal trouble until incredibly being incarcerated for over a decade, five or six times as long as the...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 3
Like the classic episodes “The Naked Time” or “The Deadly Years,” Strange New Worlds has entered into Star Trek-storytelling mode all about a weird alien virus sweeping the ship. From The Next Generation to Deep Space 9 and beyond, every Trek show needs an episode like this, and in “Ghosts of Illyria,” we get a great one. When a virus that’s transmitted by light starts to make everyone lose it, it’s up to Number One to sort everything out.
“Ghosts of Illyria,” is, arguably, the first big episode to feature Rebecca Romijn’s Una Chin-Riley as the focus of the story. And as such, we get a lot of references to previous moments in Trek canon, many of which directly connect to her backstory, and La’an’s backstory, too. Here’s every...

The phrase "the butterfly effect" stems from the tenets of Chaos Theory, which we all think we know about because we saw "Jurassic Park." It is, as with all things pertaining to mathematical theory, far more complex than a charming grin from Jeff Goldblum. Actual chaos theory states that seemingly complex and chaotic arrangements of numbers will eventually reveal themselves to be discreetly patterned, and how small, seemingly random changes early in a mathematical structure can lead to larger, more dramatic changes much further along in the same structure. The butterfly effect — and this is taken from rudimentary internet research and not years studying mathematics — describes...

Chicago – One of the more high profile local film productions this summer was “The Class.” The film essentially reunites Anthony Michael Hall of “The Breakfast Club” with John Hughes-land, and brings him back to high school … this time as the assistant principal. “The Class” was written and directed by Nick Celozzi.
The film wraps production on Sunday, August 8th, and the young cast portraying the high schoolers – Charlie Gillespie (Netflix’s “Julie and the Phantoms”), Juliette Celozzi, Lyric Ross, Hannah Kepple, Colin McCalla and Michael Sebastian – will also wrap their roles in this Breakfast-Club like homage. While in town the cast also participated in “”A Night with Anthony Michael Hall” at the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove (Il), which included his co-star Debbie Gibson, the 1980s/90s teen idol singer-turned-actress.

It’s an apt title for a film that will reportedly see heroes and villains from across the Spider-Verse collide once again, but this time, it’ll happen in live-action, which likely means the return of a few big-screen favorites.
It’s been reported that the movie will not only include Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, taking over from the late Tony Stark as Peter’s mentor, but also Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina, reprising their roles as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Dr. Octopus from the original Spider-Man 2 respectively. It’s also long been rumored that these villains will be bringing along their own Spider-Men, played once again by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. That last bit...

Imagine there’s no VHS tapes. I wonder if you can. For the earliest Trekkies, the ability to own your favorite episode of Star Trek wasn’t difficult, it was impossible. This meant that some other media was required to record the true logs of the USS Enterprise. Enter books. The most reliable data storage device in history, and the first and possibly best destiny for Star Trek merch.
Since 1967, there have literally been thousands of officially licensed Star Trek books published. The question is, if fans only care about “real” canon do any of the Star Trek books actually qualify as part of the “real” story of the Final Frontier. The answer doesn’t fall into a simple binary. Star Trek books have been an integral part of the growth of the franchise since the very beginning. Here’s a quick and dirty guide to the mixed canonicity of the various Star Trek books.

As with all award shows, the Latin Grammys have had a couple of controversies over the years. Perhaps one of the most prevalent is how urban/reggaeton artists are typically ignored in favor of genres like pop, tropical and alternative. This was particularly noticeable last year, when a slew of urban artists complained about the lack of representation, especially given how massive this genre is in popular culture. With most if not all Latin crossover hits of the past few years being reggaeton or reggaeton-inspired, including but not limited to “Chantaje” by Shakira and Maluma, “Mi Gente” by J Balvin, and most recently “Hawái” by Maluma, is it really fair to shut the genre out of major recognition in terms of nominations and wins?

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 3. Read our review of the episode here.
As the USS Discovery starts to explore the galaxy in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, the first stop is, understandably, to check-in on how the Planet Earth is doing. Unlike Battlestar Galactica searching for Earth forever, Discovery decided to get the whole Earth thing out of the way right away. In Episode 3, “People of Earth,” the crew returns to the home planet of the Federation and learns things are not remotely similar to how they left it.
Along the way, “People of Earth” references a long-running Tng-Douglas Adams joke, a quip from Kirk in The Wrath of Khan, a famous DS9-era alien species, and more!
700 years after we left…
Burnham’s opening narration fills in new details we previously didn’t get about the Burn, including the idea that prior to the Burn,...

This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.
With most new Star Trek shows, locating the Easter eggs and references takes probably at least two viewings. But, with Lower Decks, you can watch an episode four times and still be missing references and Easter eggs. This is saying something when you also consider that these episodes are half as long as episodes of Discovery or Picard. So, with that in mind, like in the previous episodes, there is almost certainly something we missed in trying to gather all the Easter eggs and references from Lower Decks episode 4, “Moist Vessel.”
From a surprise guest star (Haley Joel Osment) to a heartwarming story about Mariner and Captain Freeman (briefly) becoming allies, this episode was about a lot more than just Easter eggs. But that’s not why you’re here. You came for the Trekkie eggs and you shall have them!

Also, Doctor Who fans will want to take note, as the most recent season of the show lands on HBO Max the same day.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

This Star Wars: The Clone Wars article contains spoilers.
Now that The Clone Wars is over, there are a lot of questions fans probably still have about the end of the show. What happened to all the clones who were still loyal to Sidious? What did Vader do with Ahsoka’s lightsaber? Where did Maul go? And as fun as those questions are, on some level, we know the answers will be tame when compared to The Clone Wars‘ much cooler question: What if Ahsoka and Maul had teamed-up against Anakin after the Siege of Mandalore?
It’s a question that suggests an alternate version of Revenge of the Sith, and in turn, an entire bizarro dimension of Star Wars canon. Obviously, throughout the four-part finale, we know Ahsoka won’t team-up with Maul to betray Anakin, but both episodes 10 and 11, “The Phantom Apprentice” and “Shattered,” we’re shown moments...

Originally introduced as a supporting character in The Clone Wars movie that spawned the animated series, Ahsoka Tano is unquestionably the star of The Clone Wars season 7. In just eight episodes (she’s not in the first arc of the season), we follow Ahsoka from Coruscant’s seedy Level 1313 to the Siege of Mandalore to the chaos of Order 66. In essence, the final season maps out where Ahsoka was and what she was doing at the end of the Clone Wars and how the Jedi Purge completely changed the trajectory of her life.
The Clone Wars could only end in tragedy. That much we already knew from Revenge of the Sith, but Ahsoka’s journey is particularly heartbreaking, not least because of the stuff she still doesn’t know by the end of the series. In the “Siege of Mandalore” arc,...

As hard as it is to believe, Star Wars: The Clone Wars finally concluded the story that Dave Filoni and George Lucas started more than 10 years ago with an episode that was as tragic as it was full of action and spectacle.
After the penultimate chapter, “Shattered,” culminated in Anakin turning to the dark side and Palpatine executing Order 66, Ahsoka went on the run from the 501st platoon that accompanied her through the Siege of Mandalore. On the bright side, though, the former Jedi Padawan managed to remove Commander Rex’s chip, not only saving her friend but also increasing her likelihood of surviving the clones. Of course, with Darth Maul set loose, the clones didn’t stand much of a chance and the dark-side warrior proceeded to blow up the Star Destroyer’s hyperdrive.
Meanwhile, Rex and Ahsoka continued to fight waves after waves of Clone Troopers, refusing to kill them,...

Today’s the day. As it’s Star Wars Day, Disney Plus dropped the much-anticipated series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and we finally got to see the last chapter in a story that’s spanned – on and off – 12 years. Of course, we also got an answer to the big question of how Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul survived Order 66.
Last Friday’s “Shattered” saw the execution of Order 66, with Commander Rex battling his clone programming and Ahsoka managing to discover that the inhibitor chips are causing the clones’ betrayal of the Jedi. When we left her, she’d been forced to release Maul to cause a distraction while she operated on Rex to remove his chip, but a clone troop had broken into the medbay.
“A Victory and Death” kicks off with Ahsoka and the freed Rex blasting their way through the turncoat clones, only using non-lethal force.

The series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars finally addresses a long-standing mystery by revealing the fate of Ahsoka Tano and Maul amid the rise of the Galactic Empire.

After all, anything the Mouse House does in the world of that galaxy far, far away ends up getting picked apart by fans and ultimately proves to be divisive, and for good reasons, too. Yet, Dave Filoni and his team somehow managed to stick the landing and deliver a near-perfect ending to the story of the Prequel era.

It’s been a long time since we witnessed the execution of Order 66 in Revenge of the Sith, but the penultimate episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars somehow managed to rekindle all those painful emotions from 15 years ago.
The eleventh episode is aptly titled “Shattered,” describing the state that Dave Filoni left us in when it came to a close. Fans already knew that this moment was coming, and even the producers teased us from time to time, but Anakin turning to the dark side still struck an agonizing chord. Although, the fact that Samuel L. Jackson and Hayden Christensen’s voices filled the background really got us, not to mention Rex’s heartbreaking reaction to Order 66 and Ahsoka trying to survive amidst the endless wave of blaster fire from her Clone Troopers.
Everything in this episode, from the early scenes building up to the defining moment and the...

If you got chills while watching “Shattered,” the third part of The Clone Wars finale, there’s a good chance that the episode’s music had something to do with that. Series composer Kevin Kiner’s bold score for this installment is unorthodox as hell but classic at the same time. But, beyond its dichotomy, it proves something about Star Wars in general. Subverting our expectations for what the music of Star Wars should be is, perhaps, the fastest way to make new Star Wars stories feel fresh. We all love John Williams’ scores, but at a certain point, it’s nice to hear something new.
Some might say Star Wars would be nothing without its famous music, but it’s worth thinking about which aspects of the saga would be more well-liked had the music been more memorable and daring. For my money, Solo isn’t half as bad...

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
Soon, The Clone Wars will be over. The seven-season animated series is ending much in the same way as Revenge of the Sith, with the evil Emperor Palpatine rising to power and ordering the slaughter of all the Jedi. If you’ve watched the Prequel Trilogy, you know that his Jedi purge begins with Order 66.
In “Shattered,” the penultimate episode of The Clone Wars, Palpatine unleashes Order 66 on Ahsoka Tano and Maul. What was initially a major victory for Ahsoka on Mandalore has turned into a tragedy that will completely change her life.
So what is Order 66 and how is it connected to other parts of the Star Wars saga?
What is Order 66?
The order is a cue for the entire army of clone troopers to kill their Jedi commanders and any other Jedi they find. Order 66 effectively marks all Jedi as traitors...

For Lars Ulrich, quarantining during the pandemic has meant spending more time with his wife and kids. Just in the past few days, the drummer shared video of sons Myles and Layne, both home from NYU, playing their fuzzy, noisy instrumental take on the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” Metallica had intended on playing South America this spring and headlining several summer festivals this summer, but they’ve since put those plans on hold until it’s safe to play live again. Their next scheduled date is their own All Within My...

Death awaits the Jedi in “Shattered,” one of the darkest episodes of The Clone Wars to date. Covering the events of Order 66 from Ahsoka and Maul’s perspective, the two Force users must fight for their lives to escape the clone troopers who want to kill them.
Unsurprisingly, the central plot of this episode features many references to Revenge of the Sith as well as some of the other movies. You’ll also find nods to the Rebels animated series, earlier episodes of The Clone Wars, and ancient Star Wars history.
Here are the easter eggs and references we’ve in “Shattered” so far:
Revenge of the Sith
– There are several references to Revenge of the Sith in this episode, but the Jedi Council call at the beginning of the episode is perhaps the most direct, as it’s cut straight out of a scene from the movie in which Mace Windu,...

Star Wars: The Clone Wars reached its penultimate episode today, with the show finally coming to the fateful events of Order 66. Obviously, we’ve known for a long while that Ahsoka Tano survived the destruction of the Jedi, as she returned in sequel series Star Wars Rebels. Likewise, Captain Rex was confirmed to have overcome his clone programming on that same show. This depiction of their escape, however, conflicts with what we’d already been told, but it’s probably for the best.
In episode 7×11 “Shattered,” Ahsoka and Rex are heading back to Coruscant with a captured Maul when Palpatine issues Order 66. In the midst of their journey through hyperspace on a Republic cruiser, the troopers turn on Ahsoka – including Rex! Thankfully, he’s able to struggle with his programming enough to tell her to find Fives. The former Jedi manages to discover the truth about Fives’ death from a terminal,...
