Gotham is expanding in “The Penguin” and that means a lot of familiar names, but new faces. In some cases, it means new names too.

Premiering on HBO on Thursday, September 19, “The Penguin” takes place just a few weeks after the events of “The Batman,” but centers on crime boss Oz Cobb — better known as the Penguin. It's been a long time coming, but the world finally knows, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Colin Farrell is one of the best actors currently working today. The Irish-born performer got his start in genuinely great projects like "Minority Report," but when he followed that particular film with filler thrillers like "The Recruit" and "S.W.A.T.," it became easy to overlook his talent. (His turn as Bullseye in Ben Affleck's dud "Daredevil" didn't help either.) In 2008, though, he starred in Martin McDonagh's drama "In Bruges" alongside Brendan Gleeson — two collaborators he'd team up with again years later — and in recent years, Farrell's projects have skewed more towards quality like "In Bruges" rather than, say, "Alexander."

The point here is that Colin Farrell has appeared in some pretty excellent projects, and he's really good in all of them...

Despite being a storytelling staple since before the term was even coined (not to mention sparking several mass panics), real life psychopaths are exceedingly rare. It’s estimated that only about 1% of the population is truly devoid of empathy, and even then, most of them seem content with working jobs where they feel powerful rather than actively seeking out homicide.

And yet, we remain fascinated with the idea of invisible bogeymen living among us during the day and committing terrible acts of murder at night – which is likely why there are so many psycho-focused genre films out there. And with such a huge backlog of (usually psychologically inaccurate) stories about mentally ill killers, it was only a matter of time before clever filmmakers began subverting the tropes that surround our favorite ne’er-do-wells. Among these satirical productions, I think one of the most underrated happens to be Martin McDonagh’s darkly humorous thriller Seven Psychopaths.

It’s official. Brendan Gleeson is set for a major role in the upcoming Spider-Man Noir live-action series at Amazon.

Variety exclusively reported in July based on sources that Gleeson would be a part of the show, but his role has now been fully confirmed. Exact details for Gleeson’s character are being kept under wraps, but he is believed to be playing the main villain.

Gleeson will star alongside series lead Nicolas Cage in the show, which is currently titled “Spider-Noir.” Additional cast members include Lamorne Morris, Abraham Popoola, and Li Jun Li. As previously reported, the show will debut domestically on MGM+’s linear channel and then globally on Amazon Prime Video.

Per the official logline, the show “tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.

Conclave, the German filmmaker Edward Berger’s follow-up to his Oscar-celebrated interpretation of All Quiet on the Western Front, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. And if my gut reaction to the film, and that of industry insiders with whom I consulted after it ended, are any indication, then an Oscar race that has heretofore looked awfully thin may well have found a new top-tier, across-the-board contender.

The film, which Peter Straughan adapted from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel about the aftermath of a pope’s sudden death and the chaotic succession process that followed it, is hard to describe. I suppose “dramatic thriller” is apt, although there are also moments of comedy and horror, with multiple crazy twists that should not be spoiled. Some are likening it to Dangerous Liaisons, others to the quirky films of Yorgos Lanthimos.

Ray Yeung’s All Shall Be Well has been set as the opening film of the 48th Hong Kong International Film Festival, which has unveiled its full lineup today.

Beecham (“1899”) joins as Harold’s wife Edith Swan-neck while Poésy (“In Bruges”) will play William’s wife Matilda.

Atlas Distribution Company, a U.S. indie distributor, has set Vietnamese-American co-production film “A Fragile Flower” on course for a theatrical release in the U.S. Produced by the duo Mai Thu Huyen and Jacqueline Thu Thao, the romantic musical drama, with a screenplay by Vietnamese singing sensation Nhat Ha, is set debut from Mar. 29.

“A Fragile Flower” tells the tale of resilience and hope through the eyes of a blossoming Vietnamese songstress blessed with both a mesmerizing voice and a gentle soul. Much of the cast are professional singers including Trizzie Phuong Trinh, Nhat Ha, Anh Dung, Khanh Hoang, Lam Tuyet Trang, Ho Xuan Dao, Jacky Tai, Jinstar Nguyen Duy, Maya, Quoc Cuong and Mai Thu Huyen.

Based on author Helen MacDonald’s well-received New York Times memoir of the same name, the film is to be directed by BAFTA winner Philippa Lowthorpe (The Crown), and written by Emma Donoghue (Room).

The true story follows Helen (Foy) who, after losing her beloved father (Gleeson), finds herself saved by an unlikely friendship with a stubborn hawk named Mabel. Through the bond, Helen rediscovers the beauty of being alive.

Protagonist Pictures’ is launching worldwide sales on the buzzy package ahead of the EFM. Pic is being produced by Plan B and was developed with Film4 who will executive-produce and co-finance.

Robert Downey Jr. has quickly become the Oscars frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative turn in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” This Universal blockbuster chronicles how Cillian Murphy‘s titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt features as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, while Downey Jr. portrays his political foe Lewis Strauss. Sabina Smitham has joined Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin’s Blueprint Pictures, the producer of “Banshees of Inisherin,” as head of development.

Reporting to head of film, Ben Knight, the new role will see Smitham manage the company’s development team and take the lead on expanding the company’s development slate.

Smitham, an alumnus of the U.K.’s prestigious National Film and Television School’s master in producing program, joins from Disney+, where she oversaw the development of a range of projects for the Europe, Middle East and Africa Original Productions team. Since 2008, he may only have made a quartet of feature films, but in the film world, he has gone four for four in earning critical acclaim. After winning an Academy Award in 2004 for “Six Shooter,” his first live action short film (which starred Brendan Gleeson in the beginning of a beautiful partnership), McDonagh went on to write and direct four contemporary classics: “In Bruges” (2008), “Seven Psychopaths” (2012), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022).
