The Best Limited/Movie Actress race at the 2025 Golden Globes has had the same two frontrunners all season long: Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Cate Blanchett (“Disclaimer”). But there’s a brand new challenger in the third place position in the form of Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”). Can she pull out a victory when the 82nd annual Golden Globes air on Jan. 5, 2025, on CBS?
Foster, Blanchett, and Milioti are expected to be joined by Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Nicole Kidman (“The Perfect Couple”) in this year’s nominations lineup, per our combined odds. Foster recently won the Emmy for “True Detective: Night Country, with Vergara and Watts being co-nominees. Blanchett, Milioti, and Kidman star on new programs that will be eligible at next year’s Emmys.
“The Penguin” is HBO’s take on the classic DC Comics “Batman” villain, with Colin Farrell playing the titular role.

Colin Farrell is undeniably one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood today. The Irish actor is currently riding high with the success of HBO’s The Penguin, a spin-off series from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which has captured the attention of both fans and critics alike.

Gotham is expanding in “The Penguin” and that means a lot of familiar names, but new faces. In some cases, it means new names too.
Premiering on HBO on Thursday, September 19, “The Penguin” takes place just a few weeks after the events of “The Batman,” but centers on crime boss Oz Cobb — better known as the Penguin. With Gotham effectively in ruins, it’s a race to see who can control the streets, and he thinks his time has come.
That becomes a bit harder, though, when Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone, unexpectedly returns from Arkham Asylum.
We won’t spoil anything, but here are the major players you’ll need to keep up with.

It's been a long time coming, but the world finally knows, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Colin Farrell is one of the best actors currently working today. The Irish-born performer got his start in genuinely great projects like "Minority Report," but when he followed that particular film with filler thrillers like "The Recruit" and "S.W.A.T.," it became easy to overlook his talent. (His turn as Bullseye in Ben Affleck's dud "Daredevil" didn't help either.) In 2008, though, he starred in Martin McDonagh's drama "In Bruges" alongside Brendan Gleeson — two collaborators he'd team up with again years later — and in recent years, Farrell's projects have skewed more towards quality like "In Bruges" rather than, say, "Alexander."
The point here is that Colin Farrell has appeared in some pretty excellent projects, and he's really good in all of them...

Despite being a storytelling staple since before the term was even coined (not to mention sparking several mass panics), real life psychopaths are exceedingly rare. It’s estimated that only about 1% of the population is truly devoid of empathy, and even then, most of them seem content with working jobs where they feel powerful rather than actively seeking out homicide.
And yet, we remain fascinated with the idea of invisible bogeymen living among us during the day and committing terrible acts of murder at night – which is likely why there are so many psycho-focused genre films out there. And with such a huge backlog of (usually psychologically inaccurate) stories about mentally ill killers, it was only a matter of time before clever filmmakers began subverting the tropes that surround our favorite ne’er-do-wells. Among these satirical productions, I think one of the most underrated happens to be Martin McDonagh’s darkly humorous thriller Seven Psychopaths.

Conclave, the German filmmaker Edward Berger’s follow-up to his Oscar-celebrated interpretation of All Quiet on the Western Front, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. And if my gut reaction to the film, and that of industry insiders with whom I consulted after it ended, are any indication, then an Oscar race that has heretofore looked awfully thin may well have found a new top-tier, across-the-board contender.
The film, which Peter Straughan adapted from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel about the aftermath of a pope’s sudden death and the chaotic succession process that followed it, is hard to describe. I suppose “dramatic thriller” is apt, although there are also moments of comedy and horror, with multiple crazy twists that should not be spoiled. Some are likening it to Dangerous Liaisons, others to the quirky films of Yorgos Lanthimos.

Here’s your first look at Ciarán Hinds as Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 playing new character Dark Wizard.
The character is billed as “A dark and powerful wizard, whose origins and intentions are shrouded in secrecy, and who has a legion of magic-wielding acolytes who obey his every command — among them the three travelers who sought out the Stranger at the end of Season 1… on the Dark Wizard’s orders.”
His casting was revealed earlier this year, as Rory Kinnear and Tanya Moodie also joined the cast. At the time, no character descriptions were forthcoming.
Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated for his role in Belfast, Hinds has also starred in films including Munich, There Will Be Blood, In Bruges and Justice League as well as TV series including Game of Thrones and Rome.

Ralph Fiennes is a curious case at the Oscars. He has earned two nominations in his career, but they both came back in the ’90s for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “The English Patient” (1996). What makes that so curious is that he never stopped appearing in Oscar movies, but he somehow wasn’t nominated for any of them over the next 27 years. This year, though, the combined predictions of Gold Derby users suggest that Fiennes will finally make the cut again for Best Actor for “Conclave.”
Let’s consider Fiennes’s impressive filmography since “The English Patient.” “The End of the Affair” (1999) earned co-star Julianne Moore an Oscar nom. “The Constant Gardener” (2005) won an Oscar for co-star Rachel Weisz. “In Bruges” (2008) contended for its original screenplay. “The Reader” (2008) won an Oscar for co-star Kate Winslet and was nominated for Best Picture. “The Hurt Locker” (2009) won Best Picture. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) was...

Colin Farrell has had a stellar few years, turning in exquisite performance after exquisite performance in a variety of projects from deadpan comedy movies such as “The Lobster” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” to a transformative turn in the superhero flick “The Batman.”
Farrell has delivered another enigmatic performance with the Apple TV+ detective series “Sugar.” In this neo-noir drama, Farrell plays private investigator John Sugar, who delves into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a famous Hollywood producer. Farrell is as magnetic as ever in, wielding his natural charisma and captivating screen presence with ease while also sowing in the sort of sad, lamentable quality that he displayed in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a film that earned him his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor). Critics have applauded Farrell for his turn in “Sugar.”

Colin Farrell is a versatile Irish actor who has excelled in a variety of genres, from action films to dramas and from wild comedies to very very dark comedies.
Farrell has had the good fortune to work with many of the best directors out there, including Terence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Two writers/directors in particular have been instrumental in pushing Farrell to new artistic ground. And most recently, he has received acclaim for “The Banshees of Inisherin” with his first Oscar nomination and become a DC villain in “The Batman.”

Before his mid-career upswing — starting either with “The Lobster” or “The Beguiled” and running through recent scorchers like “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” — it’s worth remembering that Colin Farrell used to make bad movies, too. Now, his hot streak includes an Oscar nomination and a successful blockbuster franchise (soon with its own TV spinoff), but back then, for every “New World” and “In Bruges,” there was a “London Boulevard” and “Dead Man Down.” “Disappointing” may be a better descriptor of his star-forming era, with the “Total Recall” and “Fright Night” reboots, as well as earlier flops like “Alexander,” “The Recruit,” and “S.W.A.T.” But no matter how you remember them (if you remember them), Farrell’s early career offered uncertain quality. Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

Few actors stack up against the greatness of Colin Farrell. The Irish actor rose to the top of Hollywood but struggled with alcohol and drugs. His comeback, beginning in 2008’s In Bruges, has resulted in an over fifteen-year run of greatness. As the lead of Sugar, a new series from Apple TV+, Farrell once again shines. Through empathy and kindness, he makes Sugar a uniquely human show. Yet, on occasion, the show dips into style over substance. It’s a huge win for Apple TV+ and for Noir fans everywhere.

Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.
He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

Actor Colin Farrell has been a popular name in the entertainment industry since the early 2000s. Although the actor has appeared in various movies throughout his career, a lot of people only associate him with the role of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot / The Penguin in 2022’s The Batman.

Farrell’s fans have often pointed out that the actor has performed in better movies, particularly in director Martin McDonagh’s 2008 movie, In Bruges. Not many people know that Farrell initially turned down the offer, but McDonagh wasn’t taking no for an answer. Ultimately, Farrell appeared as Ray in the movie, earning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.

Tales of Babylon, an Indie dark crime comedy by Pelayo De Lario, is a testament to why I love cinema. Pelayo de Lario is not yet an established name in the industry, but I have a feeling that it’s going to happen very soon. This movie is also a reason why I like British humor. Well, I’m not going to lie, British humor can be pretty disturbing and even very contextual, but it’s also quite eccentric and deadpan nonetheless. Perhaps the most accurate word to describe this form of humor would be ‘cheeky.’ Coming back to this movie, one can’t help but draw similarities between Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, Taratino’s Pulp Fiction, and Pelayo De Lario’s Tales of Babylon. As a matter of fact, one of the characters quite openly breaks the fourth wall by referring to Pulp Fiction during...

Ah, Christmas! While the notion of peace of earth and goodwill towards men makes this the warmest time of the year, Christmas isn’t always so cozy on the silver screen. Many of our favourite action flicks use the holidays as a backdrop, with some of them using the yuletide setting to add an extra layer of hopelessness to the proceedings – I’m looking at you, First Blood. Another Blue Christmas classic is director Martin McDonagh’s first feature-length film, In Bruges, a darkly comic character study of two hitmen on the run who set up shop in a titular quaint city in Belgium. The two hitmen are beautifully played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, whose pairing was so potent that McDonagh retimed them 14 years later for The Banshees of Inisherin.
In this one, Colin Farrell plays a conscience-stricken young hitman named Ray, who’s suicidal after accidentally killing...

Robert Downey Jr. has quickly become the Oscars frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative turn in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” This Universal blockbuster chronicles how Cillian Murphy‘s titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt features as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, while Downey Jr. portrays his political foe Lewis Strauss. Third time should prove to be the charm for this charmer. That got us thinking about his first two Oscar races.
Downey Jr. was first nominated in 1993 for Best Actor for “Chaplin.” Another biopic, he played the titular role of the cinematic legend Charlie Chaplin. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the film recounts Chaplin’s incredible life and career from his poverty-stricken childhood to his worldwide acclaim. Downey Jr. turned in a pitch-perfect performance, nailing the accent, mannerisms, and expressions of the great man and receiving acclaim of his own along the way.

The only certainty in life is death. What actually happens when you reach that inevitable end has long been the subject of philosophical debate and in Death & Ramen, filmmaker Tiger Ji takes us on the poignant final journey of a ramen chef who finds himself at the crossroads of life and death. His genre-blending buddy comedy features an awkward grim reaper, played by Matt Jones whose routine job is disturbed by a puking Bobby Lee whose only desire before facing the afterlife is a steaming hot bowl of Kimchi Ramen. Tiger’s short takes us on this contemplative, hilarious journey with tact, nuance and a deep consideration of life and what may lay beyond it. It’s not easy to create a film that opens with a suicide attempt that makes you laugh and hanker for ramen in equal measure, but Tiger has done exactly that and Death & Ramen manages...

Yippee-Ki-Yay, Moviegoers! Die Hard will be back in theaters next week, just in time for Christmas. But it’s not a Christmas movie…is it? It’s debated year after year: does the 1988 action flick qualify as a holiday film or not? According to many, yes. The holiday is even mentioned in AMC’s write-up: “A New York City cop faces overwhelming odds when his Christmas visit to California is interrupted by a hostile invasion of his estranged wife’s office building.”
On the topic, we made our own case a few years ago that Die Hard is in fact a Christmas movie. Personally, I can’t take that stance. Die Hard qualifies as “Christmas-adjacent”, like Lethal Weapon, In Bruges and Eyes Wide Shut. Christmas is part of the films in one way or another – typically being set during the holiday season – but it’s not a big enough part...

If critical admiration were tracked like baseball stats, writer/director Martin McDonagh would easily be an All-Star. Since 2008, he may only have made a quartet of feature films, but in the film world, he has gone four for four in earning critical acclaim. After winning an Academy Award in 2004 for “Six Shooter,” his first live action short film (which starred Brendan Gleeson in the beginning of a beautiful partnership), McDonagh went on to write and direct four contemporary classics: “In Bruges” (2008), “Seven Psychopaths” (2012), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022).
In addition to his film success, McDonagh (in his spare time) is one of the most prominent playwrights of his generation, with acclaimed productions both on Broadway and in London’s West End. The success of his plays, many of which are set in the small towns and villages of Ireland, have been much-awarded on both sides of the pond,...

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tar,” and “Triangle of Sadness.” Our odds currently indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Banshees of Inisherin” (18/5), “Tar” (9/2), “The Fabelmans” (9/2), and “Triangle of Sadness” (9/2).
For the fifth time in six years, multiple original writing nominees also picked up directing and producing bids. In fact, in a historic first, all five movies in this lineup are also in the running for Best Director, with Tony Kushner (“The Fabelmans”) being the only original scenarist not nominated there as well. He shares his writing notice with the film’s director, Steven Spielberg, who now has 22 Oscar bids to his name and has previously won for helming “Schindler’s List” (1994) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and producing the former.

The only downside of Ke Huy Quan being a lock for the best supporting actor win at the Oscars is that you don’t get to hear much from the other nominees as a result. And this is a category full of interesting performances and actors at all stages of their careers.
All will be celebrated during the Academy Awards, which airs live Sunday on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. There’s still time to catch up on their performances before the show.
Here’s a bit more about the contenders:
Brian Tyree Henry
While filming “Causeway”, Jennifer Lawrence would sometimes finish a scene with Brian Tyree Henry and say to him, “You’re going to get nominated for an Oscar” and then just walk away.
Henry was a little baffled at the time, but Lawrence (a four-time nominee and one-time winner) was right.
“She was unforgiving in reminding me that this was possible.

It may be easy to forget that acclaimed writer Martin McDonagh — the mind behind nine-time Oscar nominated film “The Banshees of Inisherin” — has never won an Academy Award for writing. He has earned Best Original Screenplay nominations for “In Bruges” in 2009, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018 and now for “Banshees” in 2023, and he even won back in 2006 for Best Live Action Short for “Six Shooter,” but the writing prize has been elusive. This year, he is in a close contest with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s script for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Might this nail-biting race shake out for McDonagh exactly as it did back in 2018, when the “Three Billboards” scribe ultimately lost to Jordan Peele for “Get Out”?
According to our current odds, roughly a third of our users predict “Banshees” to win for Best Original Screenplay, whereas more than half bet on “Everything Everywhere.” The...

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Todd Field (“Tar”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Ruben Östlund (“Triangle of Sadness”), and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”). Our odds currently show that Kwan and Scheinert – aka the Daniels – are most likely to win (16/5), followed in order by Spielberg (19/5), McDonagh (9/2), Field (9/2), and Östlund (9/2).
Spielberg is the only returning directing contender in the bunch, with eight past bids under his belt for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1978), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1982), “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1983), “Schindler’s List” (1994), “Saving Private Ryan” (1999), “Munich” (2006), “Lincoln” (2013), and “West Side Story” (2022). He prevailed on both his fourth and fifth outings and shared in a Best Picture win as a producer of “Schindler’s List.” This new notice makes him the first back-to-back directing nominee since 2015 and 2016 champion Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Birdman” and “The Revenant”).

Seventeen years after his first and only short film, “Six Shooter” (2004), brought him his sole Oscar win for Best Live Action Short, Martin McDonagh is seeking his first Best Director victory for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The 2022 black comedy is his fourth feature film, after 2008’s “In Bruges,” 2012’s “Seven Psychopaths” and 2017’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Although the last amassed seven Oscar notices, McDonagh’s direction was overlooked. Now that he has finally garnered enough support within the directors’ branch for a nomination, it might indeed be time for him to conquer his first above-the-line category.
The Best Director contenders nominated against McDonagh are Todd Field (“Tar”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Ruben Ostlund (“Triangle of Sadness”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”). Spielberg is the only category veteran in the bunch, with two wins for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) as well...
