The sisters' surname was originally Velasquez.
Both Madera Verde (Spanish for "green wood") and Greenwood County are fictional locations created by the screenwriter. He chose to name both locations after the street that his parents lived on in East Islip, New York when they first got married.
The role of the Sheriff was written with Jerry Orbach specifically in mind. Since his passing, the character was renamed Jerry Driscoll in his honor.
