Elizabeth Banks took inspiration for her character of Rachel from Rebecca De Mornay's performance in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992). On the role of the character, she stated: "It was very important to me that every line reading I gave could be interpreted two ways, so that when you go back through the movie you can see that."
The film was originally intended to have the same name as the original film, A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), before it was changed to The Uninvited.
Emily Browning originally auditioned for the role of Alex, the older sister of her character, before being cast as Anna. Coincidentally, the exact same thing happened with the original film, A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), where Lim Soo-jung originally auditioned for the other sister, Soo-yeon.
The film is supposed to be set in Maine, but it was actually shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. Most of the film was shot at a single location, a waterfront property on British Columbia's Bowen Island, a short ferry ride west from mainland Vancouver.
