(Update: We have been provided a trailer with English subtitles) It was back in February that we shared the first teaser for Gilles Coulier's Belgian crime drama Cargo and, already, we were much impressed by what was on offer. Veteran character actor Sam Louwyck - I first came across him in Ex Drummer and his presence in anything since has been a sure fire mark of quality - takes the lead inwhat promises to be one of the stronger pictures of the year. In the cold waters of the North Sea, Leon Broucke jumps overboard from his fishing boat in front of his eldest son, Jean. The old man slips into a deep coma, leaving his son with a huge debt and responsibility for the...

We have some brief news on the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted thanks to The Cult. Financing has finally come through on the project! Belgium filmmaker Koen Mortier (Ex Drummer) was appointed back in 2008 to direct and write the screenplay. Yes, that's how long this thing has just been sitting on a shelf somewhere. Just like other possible Palahniuk adaptations: Survivor, Lullaby, and Invisible Monsters. Brian Levy acquired the film to be the first project under his banner, New...

There is something quite distinctive and yet quite hard to pin down about the current wave of Belgian films. though very much within the arthouse aesthetic there's just something damaged about these films, something that - when coupled with elements of crime film and other dark overtones - gives them a broad appeal into the more genre oriented world as well. Films like Bullhead, The Misfortunates and Ex Drummer are all obvious examples of these pictures and it would appear Peter Monsaert's Offline may be another. After seven years in prison, Rudy Vandekerckhove has set himself two clear objectives: get back to work as a washing machine repairman, and - more importantly - become reconciled with the family he had left behind. But despite the...

With Ex Drummer, Koen Mortier (22 Mei) followed the path that Tom Barman's Any Way The Wind Blows cleared a couple of years earlier. Mortier merely confirmed it was possible to make challenging, unique films in Flanders, films that holds international appeal and aren't just local products build on the national fame of some or other second-rate actor. Ex Drummer is not for the faint of heart, but if you possess a very dark sense of humor this is definitely one of the best comedies you will encounter. The DVD cover links this film to Trainspotting, and while I can appreciate the similarities between both movies you need a much darker and nihilistic sense of humor to sit through Mortier's masterpiece. Ex Drummer descends to the...

Soon to premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival is Michael Roskam's Bullhead (Rundskop), a dark drama set in the world of illegal agricultural hormone trading. Shot by frequent Koen (Ex Drummer) Mortier collaborator Nicolas Karakatsanis there seems to be a lot to like in the trailer. Here's the official synopsis:
Set in the underworld of the Belgian agricultural hormone mafia, an illegal fatstocker and a police informer face each other in a crime investigation. But then a dark and unsettling story about loyalty and friendship unfolds through their tormented past as childhood friends.

A couple of years ago several new talents took the stage in the Flemish film scene. Films like Ex Drummer, Small Gods and Dirty Mind launched a new image for our movie industry, even landing us some international attention on foreign film fests. It's not just a passing hype either, as proven by Koen Mortier's second feature-length film. 22 Mei (22nd of May if you prefer the international title) turned into a challenging and stunning piece of cinema.
Mortier had to fight long and hard to get his first film made. Ex Drummer might be a book adaptation but Mortier's vision was just too strong and relentless for companies to simply shell out some quick cash and a carte blanche handshake. The film became an international cult success though and Mortier was given the even more difficult task to treat his newfound fans to an even better sophomore picture. This...

Now gearing up for a mid-November release in Belgium a pair of clips have turned up online from 22nd of May, the sophomore effort from Ex Drummer director Koen Mortier. Though clearly the work of the same man this is an entirely different sort of film from his debut, one that trades in the abrasiveness of the original for something entirely more hypnotic and metaphysical.
... While everything around him is burning, Sam tries his best to help. He drags a woman outside against her will. She is screaming, struggling to get back inside to save her child. But Sam is already back on the scene, trying to rescue other victims, all of them just as helpless as he is. They are strewn over the floor, covered in blood, their clothes shredded to pieces, feeling utterly lost. As their cries turn into screams, Sam is overpowered by fear and panic. Though it remains to be seen whether he will be loved our hated by audiences at large - and both seem equally likely - there is no doubt at all that Our Day Will Come announces the arrival of Romain Gavras as a significant new talent in world cinema. Though working with a very different style, Gavras embraces the same sort of fuck you abrasiveness that has made Lars Von Trier such a polarizing presence on the world scene and we should expect nothing less from Gavras.
A cynical outsider epic, Our Day Will Come is the story of Remy and Patrick, a pair of misfits joined together by their dislike of society and their red hair. Patrick (Vincent Cassel) is a psychotherapist sick to death of listening to the banalities of people's problems and pretending to care. With his searing debut Ex Drummer Belgian director Koen Mortier burst onto the scene with a sort of punk rock bravado, a raw and abrasive style laid atop remarkable technical skills and a surprising amount of soul for those willing to muck about in the filth of his characters' lives to find it. With 22nd of May - his sophomore feature - returns to serve notice that the soul of Ex Drummer was no accident. If Ex Drummer was Irvine Welsh cranked up to eleven then 22nd of May is a sort of dark cousin to Wings of Desire era Wim Wenders, a film in which the line between the physical and the spiritual are blurred to the point that they become meaningless and the spirits of the dead roam freely with the living.

#1. 22nd of May Director: Koen Mortier Cast: Sam Louwyck, Titus De Voogdt, Norman Baert, Wim Willaert, Jan Hammenecker Distributor: Rights Available. Buzz: It's a major coup that Tiff managed to land the world premiere to this sampling of dystopian madness. From the ultra talented creator behind Ex Drummer (which was shown at Tiff in 2007 and its charged content probably sent a couple of patrons out the doors early), the mind blowing trailer below only demonstrates that Mortier's packed tool box contains some gnarly heavy duty visual tricks. The Gist: Sam wakes up, gets ready and goes to do his daily job. And then the unexpected happens. A bomb explodes in the center of the shopping mall where he works. He drags himself towards the entrance to save the victims. One by one he pulls them out, until something terrible takes place. In complete hysteria he runs off till he falls down from exhaustion.

Varietys review of this film said it "could orbit fests and ancillary circuits as a cult item", likely based on it's heavy parnoia as a man loses his sanity. But that wasn't what caught my eye. It was the teaser we have after the break which includes some excellent music(!?) from Guy Van Nueten who was the composer on Ex Drummer. The film premiered at Locarno, the hands down best fest for weird arthouse gems.

Belgian director Koen Mortier won a great many very rabid fans in these parts with his debut film Ex Drummer, a punk rock blast of energy and degeneracy that has developed a very well deserved cult following all around the world. And now Mortier is back with his sophomore film poised to have its world premiere in Toronto.
Titled 22nd of May it's an entirely different, more somber affair, the story revolving around a blue collar security guard at a small mall that becomes the target of a terrorist bombing. Here's and excerpt from the original, very detailed synopsis:

The sophomore film from the director of Ex Drummer, Swedish thriller Bad Faith, Pablo Trapero's Carancho (my personal favorite film from Cannes 2010), Tsui Hark's Detective Dee, Tom Tykwer's Three and a host of others populate one of the more exciting lineups for the Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Program in recent years. Here's the complete lineup:

America has had to wait a long, long time for Koen Mortier's Ex Drummer. One of the most potent debut films I have ever come across - you can read my review here - the picture deserves all the Trainspotting comparisons, though this is grittier stuff by far. After becoming a buzz film at the Toronto International Film Festival and being picked up for release by Tartan the film itself and director Koen Mortier appeared headed for cult stardom but those plans all fell apart when Tartan collapsed before releasing it and sent the film off into contractual limbo. Though it did receive an R1 release in Canada, that version was pretty bare bones and scarcely publicized at all.
Well, Us fans, the newly reorganized Tartan is up and running, treating their films a whole lot better than the old Tartan did and they have just put out the...

We might be jumping the gun a bit here today, but clearly Avatar is the biggest DVD and Blu-ray release of the week -- even if it doesn't actually hit stores until Earth Day (Thursday). I wonder how many people will bring it home and wonder why they aren't seeing it in three-dimensions? Other major releases include Crazy Heart (which Jeff Bridges just won the Oscar for), Peter Jackson's much maligned The Lovely Bones, British crime drama 44 Inch Chest, and Peacock starring Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page. On Blu, we have Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, The Basketball Diaries, and the Kino release of Battleship Potemkin. Do you see anything worth buying or renting this week? Ride With The Devil (Criterion) Ang Lee’s revisionist take on the Civil War is awash in moral ambiguity, along with some stunning cinematography, production design, and fine performances. Set during the Kansas-Missouri border war, Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich star as two friends who join up with the Confederate-sympathizing Bushwhackers, finding an odd ally in a former slave (Jeffrey Wright). While it’s fascinating to see America’s bloodiest conflict through the eyes of a foreigner, thereby allowing much of the previously mentioned ambiguity a certain latitude, the film never loses the bad taste it leaves for one simple reason: it asks us, the audience, to side with not just the Confederates, but some of the lowest trash that made up the dregs, and the fringes, of the movement. Big points for audacity, but snake eyes on the story itself. Singer Jewel is impressive in her film debut.

When someone gives me seven supposedly “good” reasons not to watch a movie, there’s a very strong possibility that I’m going to watch it, anyway. That’s just the way I operate. The international trailer for Koen Mortier’s 2007 black comedy “Ex Drummer” presents a dizzying array of gritty visuals into 90 chatoic seconds, and to be perfectly honest, I’m not entirely sure what the film is about. The synopsis clears things up a bit, but when you go back and watch the trailer again, finding elements of the plot in all of that visceral madness is virtually impossible. Of course, this is exactly the reason I’m interested. Yes, I’m deranged. Tell me something I don’t know. Sheesh. A plot synopsis, straight from the director’s mindscape: Every village has its band of fools, trying to get to the top, following their idols in drug habits,...

As the San Francisco Independent Film Festival drew to a close yesterday, it bowed out with a final night time showing of Deadgirl, a controversial picture that challenges the audience's idea of sex and the coming-of-age. It's a nice bookmark to its opening night film, Somers Town, which is also about two teenage boys and a girl, but is at the opposite end of the spectrum. In between, we have films that are either full of life or apologetically cynical, completing a journey from the sweet to the depraved.

Wow, this week we have a veritable cornucopia of genre film dropping. First off is the [Rec] remake Quarantine which I personally enjoyed more than the original. I mean, that camera bashing the head in scene? Awesome! Then we have the (hopefully not) last in the Feast trifecta, Feast 3: The Happy Finish which is hands down a great series, see it. Next we have the long awaited Midnight Meat Train (review here) adapted from Clive Barker's story of the same name, and while this may have had a sordid history in getting a release, it's still worth watching. Then we have the surprisingly good (but badly titled) Alien Raiders which we all enjoyed (review here). Then we have Screamers 2: The Hunting which I know agentorange is looking forward too. Last but not least is the f***ed up genre favorite Ex Drummer out of Belgium which you should really check out.

Originally reviewed as part of the San Francisco Independent Film Festival.
Brutal. This Belgium film has been compared to Trainspotting for its depiction of the unruly lives as of society’s dregs, but one look at it and you’ll see why it makes the Danny Boyle classic look like West Side Story. Ex Drummer is Trainspotting on a cocktail of cocaine and steroids. It’s savagely violent, explicitly offensive, politically incorrect and boasts humor as black as Satan’s morning coffee.
To say that the four protagonists are misfits would be a crime of neglect, since they are much more dangerous than that. Ex Drummer tells the forming of the ironically named punk band The Feminists, consisting of three handicapped social outcasts who recruit successful writer Dries to be their drummer. Dries agrees out of amusement and boredom, reasoning that his bandmates would provide interesting material for a story.

Sorry, David Fincher, as much as I love your adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club I’ve always thought your films were just a touch too slick for Palahniuk’s particular world. And Clark Gregg? Well, you got my favorite of Palahniuk’s novels and made one brilliant casting choice in Sam Rockwell but you just don;t have the required sense of style to really make it go. Lawrence Frank? You’ve got a fighting chance of making a good film of Survivor but I don’t expect it to look much like the novel by the time you’re done. But this? This is brilliant news.
The rights to bring Palahniuk’s Haunted to the big screen have just been purchased by Belgian director Koen Mortier, he of Ex Drummer fame, and if ever there was a perfect match of director and material this is it. Ex Drummer...

While Choke hacks its way across theater screens, another Chuck Palahniuk novel is getting the spotlight. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Haunted has been optioned by New School Media. (Sweet! I might find use for those postcards from my forgotten days as a street team member after all!)
But don't expect anything of Pitt proportions. Belgian director Koen Mortier has signed on to adapt and direct the film, which will only be the director's third feature (after last year's Ex Drummer and the upcoming 22nd of May). While Mortier might be able to knock this out of the park, I think chances are good that this will be another on-screen adaptation that fails to live up to the fervor incited by Fight Club. But the content is certainly interesting.

Chuck Palahniuk's novel Haunted has been optioned by Brian Levy's New School Media. The project will be adapted for the screen and directed by Koen Mortier (Ex Drummer, A Hard Day's Work).
Two of Palahniuk's nine novels have made the transition from page to screen (Fight Club, Choke), but box office success has eluded the cult author's screen adaptations thus far.

The mammoth Fantasia Festival has come to an end and you know what that means: prizes! Who’s getting the hardware this year? Ahem ...
Swedish vampire picture Let The Right One In was the clear winner, taking home the jury award for Best Picture while also netting nods for Best Director and Best Photography. A surprising - and Very gratifying - choice was Miki Satoshi winning best script for Adrift In Tokyo while Rule of Three and Shadows in the Palace took home Best Actor and Actress, respectively, and the jury awarded a special prize to Adrift In Tokyo‘s duo of Jô Odagiri and Tomokazu Miura. In the First Features category Koen Mortier’s Ex Drummer edged out Nacho Vigalondo’s Time Crimes and John Bergin’s From Inside, all three of which I truly adore.
Check out all the rest of the winners in the official announcement below the break!

It’s gutter tourism for famed author Dries in Koen Mortier’s adaptation of the cult novel by Herman Brusselmans. Transgressive, vulgar, violent, and sexually sexually explicit, Mortier’s debut also showcases a supremely raw sense of style while preserving and oddly tragic and poetic heart. Trainspotting comparisons are inevitable - and apt enough, as far as that goes - but Mortier’s film functions on an entirely different level than Boyle’s. Yes, boys and girls, we have just been introduced to a fierce and uncompromising new talent.
