Cannes: Eugene Jarecki on Why ‘Six Billion Dollar Man’ Subject Julian Assange is “Probably Not Dr. Evil”
Image
For over a decade, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been a lightning rod in the global debate over press freedom, transparency and the reach of U.S. power. From the release of the notorious “Collateral Murder” video to his years-long exile inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Assange has been hailed as a journalistic freedom fighter and vilified as a national security threat. Now, with The Six Billion Dollar Man, director Eugene Jarecki (Why We Fight, The House I Live In) turns his lens on what he calls “the most consequential political prisoner of our time,” delivering a searing exposé that uncovers the staggering cost the U.S. was willing to pay to silence him.

Jarecki’s latest documentary is a cinematic pressure cooker — part investigative thriller, part legal procedural and part character study — that digs deep into the forces aligned against Assange. Featuring interviews with human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson,...

‘Murderbot’ Episode 3 Review: Alexander Skarsgård Brings Life to an Otherwise Dull Mission
Image
“There is nothing so agonizing as the silence of systems that should be screaming,” I muttered halfway through Murderbot’s third episode, Risk Assessment. What a curious cocktail this one turned out to be: equal parts existential discomfort, synthetic angst, awkward camaraderie, and enough sarcasm to power a snark reactor.

Episode 3 doesn’t so much escalate as it unspools, stretching its humor, tension, and theme like overused duct tape, nearly slipping under its own weight. And yet, like Murderbot itself, it keeps limping forward with just enough bite to stay interesting. The jokes? Recycled. The pace? More meander than march. But the character work, especially around Alexander Skarsgård’s brittle, anti-social SecUnit, is the meat here.

The humans dawdle, argue, cry into pillows, and shove emotions down Murderbot’s steel throat, whether it wants them or not. In short, the episode tries to be thoughtful. Does it succeed? Well, I think halfway.

‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’ Review: Straight-Ahead Julian Assange Doc Looks Pessimistically Toward a Post-Truth World
Image
The saga of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has dragged on long enough, and complicatedly enough, to render a number of past films about him, if not obsolete, clear period pieces. Documentaries like Alex Gibney’s 2013 “We Steal Secrets” and Laura Poitras’ 2016 “Risk,” both produced during the Obama era, are informed by a very different political climate from the one we’re in now — while neither could have anticipated how the Australian editor and activist’s legal difficulties would escalate in the years to come. With Assange finally freed last year after 12 years of confinement or outright imprisonment in the U.K., the time feels right for an expansive catch-up on the whole knotty affair: Enter Eugene Jarecki’s plainly presented but detail-packed documentary “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” which premiered at Cannes (with Assange himself present) in the festival’s Special Screenings program.

Beginning with the founding of initially modest...

‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’ Review: Timely Documentary Shows Julian Assange As Truth Teller Fighting Against Authoritarian Drift – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been the focus of numerous documentaries: Alex Gibney’s We Steal Secrets explored the website Assange created that exposed U.S. war crimes in Iraq, an immense cache of U.S. diplomatic cables, and much more. Oscar winner Laura Poitras also took a crack at Assange and Wikileaks in her 2016 documentary Risk. Assange himself directed a documentary short, Collateral Murder, about the 2007 video Wikileaks released that showed a U.S. military helicopter crew opening fire on unarmed journalists and civilians in Iraq.

That may sound like sufficient coverage of Assange, but director Eugene Jarecki shows it’s important to revisit him and the work of Wikileaks in light of rising authoritarianism in the U.S. and abroad. At a moment when democracy is in retreat (as author Anne Applebaum has put it), Jarecki’s film The Six Billion Dollar Man raises the question of whether...

It Starts On The Page (Drama): Read ‘The Pitt’ Episode 1 Script “7:00 A.M.” With Foreword By R. Scott Gemmill
Image
Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page (Drama) features 10 standout drama series scripts in 2025 Emmy contention.

When Noah Wyle reunited with ER producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill to make HBO Max’s The Pitt, the plan was to offer a realistic portrayal of healthcare today through the lens of harried pros working in a fictitious Pittsburgh hospital.

What they didn’t expect was how their 15-episode drama would singlehandedly reinvigorate a genre that has grown predictable and downright exhausting with overused tropes and kooky, case-of-the-week tales.

In this telling, the trio of ER alums have crafted an engrossing saga that chronicles a typical 15-hour day in a trauma hospital. Beginning with the premiere episode “7:00 A.M.,” penned by Gemmill and directed by Wells, The Pitt introduces us to Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, who – on the anniversary of...

“There’s no way I can’t support Tristen”: Top Chef Season 22 May Be Facing Its Most Unique Problem In 19 Years Of Existence
Image
Top Chef Season 22 is starting to feel…..a little different. Not because of any crazy twists or rule changes, but because of one chef, Tristen Epps. While there’s no doubt that he’s possibly among the strongest chefs in the show, the recent happenings in his personal life and how he handled all of that have placed him at the top, in the eyes of viewers at least.

That’s right, after the sudden passing of his stepfather, Epps maintained his calm and composure in the game. This is the very fact that has made the show a bit bizarre to watch, as instead of wondering who’s going to rise to the top, I’m starting to wonder if there’s even a real competition left with Epps’ dominance taking over the entire show.

Can anyone catch up to Tristen Epps in Top Chef Season 22?

For nearly two decades,...

Over the years, Sandra Bullock has starred in many films that have caused fans to demand more. While some have followed through, with Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous and the upcoming Practical Magic sequel being the perfect examples, some desperately need follow-ups.

One of the most widely wanted sequels has been a continuation of her story as Annie Porter in a third Speed film. However, Bullock seems to have plenty of original films that never got to see the light of day.

During an interview, Brad Pitt once revealed that he and Bullock were supposed to star in a film, and the plot certainly sounds intriguing.

Mark Wahlberg & Mel Gibson's "Shockingly Dull" 'Flight Risk' Heading to Digital After 3 Weeks in Cinemas
Image
In what could be yet another record for a major theatrical-to-digital shortened window of release, there's a rumor that Mark Wahlberg's Flight Riskcould be heading to digital and VOD just a few weeks after its theatrical debut. The movie opened in theaters on Jan. 24, 2025, and earned $11.5 million on its opening weekend in North America. While the audience liked it enough to give it a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics savaged it with a 29% rotten rating. Now, there's a report from When to Stream claiming it'll be on VOD and digital on Valentine's Day, just three weeks after its debut.

On paper, Flight Risk would appear to be a potential hit: It's directed by Mel Gibson (Braveheart), has a pretty good cast, and an intriguing plot and setting. Wahlberg plays a pilot named Daryl helping transport a witness (Grace), who is set to testify against his crime boss, for a U.

Box Office Predictions: Dog Man to put a leash on Love Hurts and Heart Eyes during Super Bowl weekend
Image
Last weekend, Dreamworks Animation‘s Dog Man took a bite out of the top spot at the domestic box office while howling at the moon with $36M for its opening weekend. Drew Hancock’s psychological thriller Companion trailed behind Dog Man with a pooper-scooper despite favorable reviews (including one from JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols) for a $9.5M opening. As a spinoff of the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man features a starry cast of voice talent, including Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howery, Poppy Liu, and Ricky Gervais. The half-man, half-dog, all-cop animated comedy stands to lift its leg on the number one slot at the box office this weekend with an additional $16M-$20M, even as Super Bowl Lix looks to tackle a majority of audiences.

“No one ever holds white men accountable”: The Oscars Unfollow Karla Sofía Gascón, but Don’t Forget Roman Polanski and Woody Allen Still Made Films
Image
The entertainment industry has struggled for a long time with controversies. The latest controversy involves Karla Sofía Gascón, who was unfollowed by The Oscars on social media. Many saw this as a response to her past bigoted statements.

While her actions are unacceptable, this situation highlights a deeper problem, Hollywood’s unwillingness to apply the same scrutiny to others with serious allegations.

Filmmakers like Roman Polanski and Woody Allen continue to have careers despite troubling accusations. Actors like Mark Wahlberg, who has a history of violent hate crimes, still receive praise. Mel Gibson's Long-Gestating Passion of the Christ Sequel Gets Back on Track
Image
The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection looks to be finally moving forward. After years of development, Mel Gibson was spotted location scouting in Europe earlier this week for the hotly-anticipated sequel to his 2004 biblical blockbuster The Passion of the Christ, suggesting that the project may be close to entering production.

Puglia Film Commission director Antonio Parente shared that Mel Gibson toured Malta with a production team and subsequently arrived in the Southern Italian region of Puglia where he visited various rural locations, including the ancient towns of Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Altamura. However, Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, was quick to fan the flames regarding a filming start date for Resurrection, telling Variety, "All we can confirm is they were scouting locations recently ... not a lot to discuss at this early stage."

Hollowbody Review – Quality Over Quantity (PC)
Image
Hollowbody answers a question that I am not sure anyone asked; what happens when you set the awkward slow burn gameplay of Silent Hill against the sci-fi noir backdrop of Blade Runner and sprinkle in UK soap opera dialogue reminiscent of an edgier Coronation Street?

The result is a worthwhile experience that becomes especially impressive when you learn that it was created by one person, even if it does lean a bit too much on the media it is inspired by.

To quote a vastly overrated and only moderately funny sitcom created by a washed up creep, “I’m sorry, we’ve already got a George.” In an era of an imminently releasing Silent Hill 2 official remake and countless other upcoming titles inspired by that game, it causes one to question whether we really needed another clone; even if it is extremely well made by a singular creative force.

Blue Bloods: 15 Best Episodes, Ranked
Image
Blue Bloods' enduring popularity is due to its focus on the Reagan family, showcasing both heartwarming family moments and intense, high-stakes drama. Iconic episodes like "Risk and Reward" and "Bad Company" tackle complex issues while highlighting family dynamics and emotional depth. The series' ability to blend police procedural plots with family dynamics has kept fans engaged for 14 seasons, making it a fan-favorite with strong ratings.

Blue Bloods has had many examples of outstanding drama over the fourteen years it has been on the air. Many episodes of the Tom Selleck-led cop and family drama appeal to large audiences because of its emphasis on the Reagan family. Its focus on a family of cops explains why this series' popularity has endured for years, leading to a massive fan movement to save Blue Bloods after CBS announced its cancelation in early 2024.

Unfortunately, CBS upheld its original decision to cancel the series.

Jamie Lee Curtis Helping Freaky Friday 2 Happen Makes Me More Excited About The Sequel
Image
Jamie Lee Curtis played a key role in getting Freaky Friday 2 greenlit. Freaky Friday 2 faces challenges, like a potentially repetitive story and nostalgia trap. The sequel will feature a double body swap, adding an exciting new twist to the storyline.

Jamie Lee Curtis shared the process of getting Freaky Friday 2 greenlit, and it only made me more excited about this sequel. The film industry is still going through a wave of reboots and legacy sequels, and many studios have seized the latter to bring back to life worlds and franchises that are still pretty popular. Disney has already been part of these trends for a while now, and among its latest and most exciting projects is Freaky Friday 2, the long-awaited sequel to Mark Waters 2003 teen comedy Freaky Friday.

Freaky Friday 2 is being directed by Nisha Ganatra and brings Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis back,...

‘The Boys’ Star on Black Noir and How Season 4 Sets Up a Perilous Final Season
Image
[This episode contains spoilers from season four, episode seven of The Boys.]

The penultimate episode of The Boys season four could be seen as a coming out for some of the key characters. Viewers finally saw A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) reveal himself to the Seven to be the supe traitor they’ve all been searching for. And Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) admitted to the majority of the Boys vigilante group that he’s holding a Vought scientist against his will in an effort to create a supe-killing virus that can probably kill their archenemy Homelander (Antony Starr), and maybe all supes.

But the biggest coming out party in the episode was for longtime Seven member and martial arts assassin Black Noir, played by Nathan Mitchell. This is actually Black Noir II — not to be confused with the original Black Noir in the first three seasons of The Boys. (And yes, that original Noir was also portrayed by Mitchell.) The new...

10 Best Board Games Without Dice To Play In 2024
Image
Dice inject randomness into board games, but alternative mechanics like cards, deckbuilding, and tile placement offer strategic gameplay. Games like Dune: Imperium, Azul, and Wyrmspan provide diverse mechanics without the need to roll dice every turn. Board games like Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, and Scythe offer engaging gameplay without dice, focusing on strategy.

Whether it's Monopoly, Catan, or Risk, dice have become an integral part of the standard board game formula - but they don't have to be. Dice inject a degree of randomness where it's not always needed. They can ruin a perfectly good strategy, or jeopardize a win that should've been secure. Most board games today live or die by a roll of the dice, and a single bad roll can frustrate an hour's worth of calculated gameplay.

Thankfully, there are now plenty of great board games without dice. The following ten games use cards, tiles, or other...

Mel Gibson's Mark Wahlberg Thriller Flight Risk Is a 'Zany and Wild' Movie
Image
Mel Gibson's upcoming film Flight Risk is a departure from his usual historical epics, promising a wild and action-packed thrill ride according to its producer The movie stars Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace, with a trailer featuring Wahlberg as a balding and psychotic mob hitman. Boy Kills World, also produced by Hammerstone Studios, is a hyperkinetic blast of an action comedy now in theaters, offering fun escapism.

Mel Gibson hasn't directed a film since the excellent 2016 war picture, Hacksaw Ridge. He's been working on a sequel to his massive success, The Passion of the Christ, for quite a while, but in the meantime, it looks like he's going to have some fun with an action thriller. Gibson is directing the upcoming movie Flight Risk, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace. The thriller seems like a far cry from Gibson's other directorial features, which are...

How Many Books The Expanse TV Show Adapted (& How Many Are Left)
Image
The Expanse TV series is praised for its well-developed plot, interesting characters, and political commentary. The show adapts James S. A. Corey's book series, staying faithful to the source material while making some changes. Despite not adapting the final three books, the series ended in a natural and complete way, and it won't impact the viewing experience for fans of the show.

The hit TV show The Expanse first began as a nine-book series by James S. A. Corey, the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck; however, it didn't adapt every book. Both the books and TV series follow humanity two hundred years into the future decades after humans have colonized the solar system. Mars, Earth, and the Asteroid Belt are on the brink of war, and crew members of The Rocinante must come together to solve the case of a missing woman. As a result, the...

Rob McElhenney & Kaitlin Olson’s Kids Secretly Return To It’s Always Sunny After 13 Years
Image
13 years later, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia brought back another of Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson's children. Seasons of the show traditionally enjoy an impressive revolving door of guest stars, whether it's Sean William Scott as Country Mac or Jason Sudeikis as Schmitty, with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 being no different. However, the series doesn't rely solely on big celebrity guest stars when it comes to cameos.

On occasion, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia makes use of people with personal connections to the cast and crew. One example of this is Danny DeVito's daughter, Chloe Chet DeVito, who appeared in two episodes. McElhenney and Olson, who married in 2008, have also found room for their own relatives in the show.

Rob McElhenney & Kaitlin Olson’s Son Leo Has A Cameo In It's Always Sunny Season 16

Leo Grey McElhenney appears in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16, episode 6, "Risk E.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Gets in a Culture War
Image
The following contains spoilers for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 16, Episode 6, "Risk E. Rat's Pizza and Amusement Center," which is streaming now on Hulu.

For its entire run on TV, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has always worked to take a satirical look at the issues facing the world and has often seemed to take a side within the "culture war." Season 16, Episode 6, "Risk E. Rat's Pizza and Amusement Center," brings this war to the forefront as the Gang goes to a Chuck E. Cheese-type place and faces the cold fact that they can never relieve their childhoods. The world has changed, but the Gang has stayed the same and feels like their way is the best way.

This is not the first time that the Gang has taken on modern politics. It's Always Sunny has never shied away from facing issues head-on, from the Gang taking on...

Is Risk E. Rat Real? It's Always Sunny's Creepy Animatronic Franchise Explained
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16, episode 6!Risk E. Rat's Pizza and Amusement Center is a restaurant line introduced in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16, but is the creepy animatronic franchise actually real? The pizza restaurant is undoubtedly similar to many other real-life restaurants, with the gang's misadventures showing off the location in pretty great detail. However, the Risk E. Rat's Pizza name is pretty obscure, causing many to wonder if the franchise actually exists.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16, episode 6 sees Charlie, Mac, Dee, Dennis, and Frank return to one of the restaurants that defined their childhood: Risk E. Rat's Pizza and Amusement Center. However, it isn't quite as they remember. Risk E. Rat's has significantly changed from when the gang visited it in the 1980s (and Frank in the 1950s). Much of the dangerous and more problematic material has been removed, with...

Strange New Worlds: Una's Trial Is an Anti-lgbtq+ Allegory
Image
The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 2, "Ad Astra per Aspera," now streaming on Paramount+.

Strange New Worlds made its viewers wait until the second episode of Season 2 to resolve the cliffhanger ending from the previous finale. Una Chin-Riley, Number One to Star Trek fans, was arrested for lying about being a genetically modified Illyrian. Yet, Una's court-martial is a classic Star Trek allegory for the recent legislative push to limit civil rights, especially where healthcare and Lgbtqia folks are concerned.

Because outrage makes for virality, even a series as classically "woke" as Star Trek faces criticism for including diversity, specifically Lgbtqia representation. However, "Ad Astra per Aspera" is the kind of clever allegory on a modern moral issue that The Original Series became famous for. Una Chin-Riley is on trial for lying about being Illyrian because her people have a deep cultural tie to genetic modification.

Star Wars Outlaws Fixes The Franchises' Big Protagonist Problem
Image
Ubisoft recently revealed Star Wars Outlaws, featuring its new protagonist Kay Vess who could just solve a problem that has been plaguing Star Wars games for some time. While Star Wars has long been a franchise with compelling female characters at its core, that has not been the case for its games. While there have been games that allowed players to customize their character's gender, almost all the Star Wars games with a fixed protagonist have featured men.

Taking place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Outlaws will follow cunning young scoundrel Kay Vess as she seeks to pull off jobs within the criminal underworld. Aiming for a 2024 release date, Star Wars Outlaws will see Kay joined by a cute Merqaal companion called Nix and a former Separatist commando droid Nd-5. Steering the action away from Jedi and the Force feels like a breath...

Why That Has To Be Kyle Katarn In Star Wars: Outlaws
Image
Star Wars Outlaws may be bringing back a long-lost game character. A new cinematic trailer revealed Massive Entertainment's open-world Star Wars and offered players an insight into its main characters and story, and fans believe they have seen a character from a 90s series of Star Wars games.

Star Wars Outlaws' story follows a roguish scoundrel Kay Vess as she embarks on a daring heist to earn her freedom. As is evident by the appearance of Han Solo frozen in Carbonite, the story takes place sometime between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and may feature cameos from many prominent figures from that era of Star Wars, particularly those involved in the Outer Rim's criminal underworld.

Cannes Hot List: Andrew Garfield, Keanu Reeves, Florence Pugh, and (Of Course) Nicolas Cage Set to Light Up Film Market
Image
The ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike casts a cloud over what otherwise promises to be a solid Cannes film market. Most buyers and sellers came out of Berlin this year “cautiously optimistic” as the (partial) resurgence of the theatrical market alongside a slowly but steadily growing digital ancillary business offers reason to believe reports of the death of the indie industry — widespread in the wake of the Covid theater shutdowns — have been greatly exaggerated.

“I see the investment by Amazon and Apple TV in the theatrical business as a real positive,” says David Garrett of Mister Smith Entertainment, “because it shows they recognize the real value of the theatrical experience.” Amazon’s success with Ben Affleck’s sports-marketing biopic Air, which grossed upwards of $80 million worldwide in theaters before going out online, bodes well for the upcoming rollout of Apple’s Cannes title Killers of the Flower Moon from Martin Scorsese,...
