This was the year that San Diego Comic-Con was supposed to collapse. After all, with Hollywood studios pulling out and stars not able to promote their work, all due to the double whammy of the actors and writers strikes, why would people even bother to attend?
Well, about 150,000 attendees did, indeed, show up. There were no mass hotel cancellations nor mass refunds issued for badges, which were purchased months in advance. And an interesting thing happened on the way to the Comic-Con apocalypse. There was a renewed focus on comics and other graphic arts, even as Hollywood showed up in a diminished capacity.
“This year, more than ever, it felt like the real focus was the talent behind the origins of a lot of their entertainment,” says Jimmy Palmiotti, a writer-artist who has worked for Marvel and DC and created the comic Painkiller Jane, which was adapted into a SyFy series in 2007.

Frank Lupo, the TV writer-producer who was a frequent collaborator with Stephen J. Cannell in the 1980s on such high-octane dramas as “The A-Team,” “Hunter” and “Wiseguy,” has died. He was 66.
Lupo died Feb. 18 at his home in Florida, according to his sister, Linda Joy Sullivan.
Lupo’s work in TV took off in the late 1970s when he wrote for such series as “Battlestar Galactica,” “Magnum, P.I.,” “B.J. and the Bear” and “The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo.”
Lupo worked on the Universal Television lot in the same era as Cannell, the prolific showrunner behind “The Rockford Files” and “Baretta.” Lupo wrote several episodes of Cannell’s ABC dramedy “The Greatest American Hero.”
Lupo and Cannell then co-created “The A-Team,” the action-drama with touches of comedy that became a massive hit for NBC in 1983. Cannell, who died in 2010, famously took the bold step of launching his own independent production banner on the back of “A-Team.

Since the surprise news broke that Ruby Rose was prematurely hanging up the cowl of Batwoman, speculation has been rife over who should replace her. Actors such as Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Alaina Huffman have already voiced their interest, and a further name now thrown into the ring is Wallis Day.
Hers is a name you might not be familiar with, as her most notable role was as Nyssa-Vex on Krypton, which was watched by approximately seventeen people. While her character began as a rather standard and not especially interesting rich bitch archetype with little of note to make her special other than her name, as the series progressed she became far more nuanced and compelling, due in part to the subtlety of Day’s performance.
Sounds like a dream job!!!

When we got word earlier this fall that Viola Davis would be joining Steve McQueen‘s adaptation of the crime drama Widows, based on the British television series, there was still open leading roles for one black woman, one white woman, and one Latina woman. Now, one of the them has been filled for the film scripted by McQueen and Gone Girl‘s Gillian Flynn.
Variety reports that Cynthia Erivo, who won the Tony Award for Best Actress in The Color Purple this year, has joined the crime drama, with McQueen reportedly thinking of her for the film since he began to work on it. The film, which we’ll hopefully see by late 2017, centers on four widows who come together to finish a robbery after their crooked husbands are killed on the job.

Jessica Chastain has already hunted Osama Bin Laden, saved Jason Bourne’s ass, and met Furiosa on the battlefield. The Crimson Peak actor was also recently tasked with traversing a besieged New York City in an adaptation of Tom Clancy’s The Division. Generally speaking, Jessica Chastain has shied away from big, empty blockbusters (we’re still pretending “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” doesn’t exist), and when she has signed up for expensive studio fare, it’s usually been with an auteur at the helm like Christopher Nolan (“Interstellar“), Ridley Scott (“The Martian“), and Guillermo del Toro (“Crimson Peak“).

Deadline is reporting that Jessica Chastain will enter the realm of superheroes with “Painkiller Jane,” an adaptation of the graphic-novel series of the same name. Jessica Chastain is one of the most in-demand actress working today, and has a slew of dramatic parts (including next year’s Woman Walks Ahead) in the works, but now we’re hearing that she’s also attached to star in and produce a big screen adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada’s comic series, Painkiller Jane. Chastain will play the lead role of Jane Vasko, a tough New York beat cop who develops incredible healing abilities.
Painkiller Jane was created back in the ’90s and although she’s never been a mainstream character, she has crossed over with the likes of The Punisher, Hellboy and Vampirella. There was also a short-lived Sci-Fi channel TV series based on Miss Vasko’s exploits in 2007 which starred Terminator 3 actress Kristanna Loken.

While a film adaptation has been in the works for quite some time, it now looks like Jessica Chastain will bring the lead role to life.

Castle creator Andrew W. Marlowe and executive producer Terri Edda Miller have signed on to shepherd a new procedural about an investigator and his unlikely partner.
Per our sister site Deadline, Marlowe and Miller are teaming with Tandem Productions’ Rola Bauer (Crossing Lines, Painkiller Jane) on Take Two, an L.A.-based series about a P.I., Eddie Valetik, who hires the fresh-out-of-rehab former star of a TV cop show to appear in commercials for his office.
When calls come pouring in specifically seeking out the snooping services of the TV star, Emma Swift, Eddie takes her on as a partner,...

Holy cats, creeps, I can hardly believe my putrid peepers! None other than the diabolical duo Jen and Sylvia Soska have dropped by the ol’ Crypt o’ Xiii to chew the fat and give us a look into what it’s like bein’ two of the most talented die-rectors in the horror biz!
Famous Monsters. We all know that you are rulin’ the fright flick universe these days from within the ebony walls of the Twisted Time Mansion™, but let’s cast our minds back across the aether of time and jaw a bit about how you got all entangled in the horror biz. Considering one of their films is called "Dead Hooker in a Trunk," it comes as no surprise that twin sister directors Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska have scored a reputation for sticking to their guns and keeping the horror elements of their films hardcore.
Recently it was announced the pair are set to direct a film adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti's comic book "Painkiller Jane". Now, the pair have now confirmed to Crave Online they are definitely aiming for a hard R-rating. Jen Soska says:
"I'm not working for Marvel. It has to be an R-rated character. When you come to a character like Jane, she drinks, she fights, she f--ks, she talks like you and I talk, and that's an important part of her character.
That's why we'd be really disappointed if that ended up being a PG or a PG-13 film because if you look at the character.

Back in July, it was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con that Jen and Sylvia Soska (better known as Twisted Twins) were creating a new cinematic take on Jimmy Palmiotti’s subversive comic book ass-kicker Painkiller Jane, and now they’ve affirmed to CraveOnline their commitment to a tough-as-nails, hard R-rated version of the gun-toting heroine. “I’m not working for…

A long time ago, long enough that the Sci-Fi Channel was still called just that, Painkiller Jane was an experiment that the network embarked on. Both the TV movie and the hour-long TV series failed to take off, leaving the indie comic without any hope of being adapted. If only Sci-Fi had waited a little longer and cashed in on the buzz from a little movie called Iron Man that would be released only a couple of months after the series took its final bow. As luck would have it, lightning might be striking twice for old Jane, and one of her creators is along for the ride. MoviePilot caught up with Painkiller Jane co-creator Jimmy Palmiotti as he announced that not only had the script been finished, but a pair of directors have been secured to direct the film. Palmiotti sounded very optimistic, as he gave the following prognosis...

When it comes to adaptations of popular comic book properties, things can go awry in a hurry. Hell, even small things can end up causing a ruckus because purists (many of whom are still furious over the fact the Constantine doesn't smoke a lot in the upcoming TV show) do not like their heroes screwed with!
Earlier today the news broke that The Soska Sisters, the twin horror movie directors behind cult slasher American Mary and the upcoming See No Evil 2, have signed on to helm the adaptation of Painkiller Jane, a comic created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada.
Don't worry, kids. These ladies love this stuff as much as you do and even went on record with a comment about their upcoming adaptation. They couldn't say much, but what they did say was loud and clear!

Our first, as viewable in the player above, features regular hosts William Bibbiani of CraveOnline and our own Silas Lesnick discussing the convention's preview night and the big reveals that Wednesday brought us including Pirates of the Caribbean 5, The Sinister Six, Painkiller Jane and Marvel Studios' latest mystery film.

Many horror fans are familiar with the Soska sisters, the directing duo behind 2012′s American Mary and the upcoming See No Evil 2. Fans of American Mary should be pleased to learn that Jen and Sylvia Soska now have their next project in sight: an adaptation of the comic book series, Painkiller Jane.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the Soska sisters have signed on to helm a feature film adaptation of the comic originally created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada for Event Comics in 1995, with Palmiotti as one of the producers. For those unfamiliar with the comic book, recently relaunched by Dynamite Entertainment, here’s the synopsis via THR:
“Jane centers on the titular heroine, a cop, who, along with with her best friend and partner, goes undercover into an interconnected drug ring. When her identity is exposed, Jane is tortured, which leaves her with preternatural regenerating abilities and a high tolerance for pain.

Jen and Sylvia Soska (American Mary) have been busy of late. They have See No Evil 2 coming out later this year, they have wrapped shooting on another film, Vendetta, and now comes word that they have just signed on for their next project.
The twins will be taking on Painkiller Jane, a comic book character created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada in the 1990s.
In the comics, Jane Vasko, is a cop who, along with with her best friend and partner, goes undercover into an interconnected drug ring. When her identity is exposed, Jane is tortured, which leaves her with preternatural regenerating abilities and a high tolerance for pain.
If the name sounds familiar it may be because Jane has been adapted twice before for television. The SyFy channel aired a made-for-tv movie in 2005 with Emmanuelle Vaugier as the heroine. That was followed in 2007 with a series starring...

The Soska Sisters, the twin sister horror film directing duo behind "American Mary" and "Dead Hooker in a Trunk," have signed on to helm the film adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada's comic "Painkiller Jane".
The series follows Jane, a cop who joins her best friend/partner in going undercover into an interconnected drug ring. When her true identity is exposed, she is tortured and discovers that she has supernormal regenerative powers bordering on invulnerability - minor ones heal in seconds, major ones in minutes. There's a catch though, she still feels the pain of her injuries before they heal.
Palmiotti and Stephen L'Heureux are producing this new adaptation which plans to be an indie action thriller. It follows both a SyFy TV movie and subsequent short-lived TV series based on the property.

News
A movie take on the Painkiller Jane comics is heading to the big screen, it's been confirmed. The comic was created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada, and Palmiotti is involved with the movie as producer (along with Stephen L'Heureux).
It tells the story of a cop - that'd be Painkiller Jane - who goes undercover, only for her identity to be compromised. She's tortured, with the consequence of that being a high tolerance for pain, and strange powers.
Bringing her story to the big screen will be the Soska Sisters, who previously put together the movie American Mary. They will be overseeing the third screen take on Painkiller Jane, following a SyFy Channel movie and a series, that starred Kristanna Loken.

Previously pegged as horror directors thanks to the gnarly Dead Hooker In A Trunk and the freaky American Mary, "Twisted Twins" Jen and Sylvia Soska have recently shifted gears to action filmmaking with their Vendetta for WWE Studios. They're sticking with action for their next project, having signed on for Painkiller Jane, adapted from the '90s Event Comics series by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada.Jane Vasko first appeared in print in 1995, and already has a tortuous continuity giving her multiple origin stories. In one, as an undercover cop, she believed she had gained the trust of Mafia boss Joey Fonti, but was duped into delivering a "message" to a rival mobster that turned out to be a bomb that took her with it. She was then mysteriously revived after the explosion with high pain tolerance and Wolverine-like regenerative abilities. Another version has her tortured and drugged rather than blown up,...
