Though porridge is usually served in bowls, as depicted in this picture, it also can be delivered in cups, buckets and troughs. While oatmeal is the most common type of porridge filling British feed bags, other nationalities prefer rice, wheat, barley, corn or peas porridge. Many Brits are partial to a variety of thin porridge designated as gruel, while savory maize porridge is preferred in Mexico. Southern U. S. cooks offer a variation of this called "cornmeal mush." It's important to remember that this fractured fairy tale emanates from Dec. 10, 1959--NOT 1958.
