Haim ‘I Quit’ Review: Treading an Uncharacteristically Rocky Road
Image
“Can I have your attention, please?” goes the opening line of “Gone,” the first track on Haim’s fourth studio album, I Quit. It feels like a statement of intent, as the album see Danielle, Alana, and Este Haim leaning into their pop tendencies on their most radio-friendly album to date.

Lead single “Relationships,” for one, comes armed with a breezy, instantly memorable pop hook and Instagram-ready refrain: “When an innocent mistake/Turns into 17 days/Fucking relationships.” Elsewhere, “All Over Me” alternately takes its cues from country-pop, which is currently seeing a resurgence, and Midnights-era Taylor Swift.

Across the album’s 15 tracks, though, the sister trio seems conflicted as to whether they want to fully embrace a safer mainstream approach or follow their bolder instincts. The aforementioned “Gone”—which is based around a sample of George Michael’s beloved “Freedom! ’90” that an accompanying press release hilariously suggests is some kind...

Xander’s behavior has certainly made the case for Sarah to want to hide the truth. God help him if he questions her about that “Sarah knew” comment.

We’re sad it’s come to this. While we had our issues with this couple, Xander and Sarah ended up growing on us. And we loved how Xander was growing and changing.

Image
The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have finally been announced after a short delay due to the recent fires in Los Angeles, and the controversial Netflix musical Emilia Pérez has made history by setting a record for the most nominations for a non-English language film with 13 nods. The French production of the Spanish-language musical crime thriller racked up all kinds of accolades on the festival circuit before it was released on Netflix back in Nov. 2024, and after having taken home four Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, its Oscar chances are now better than ever.

Despite the controversy surrounding the film in the LGBTQ+ and Latine communities, and over the recent revelation that AI was used in the production, Emilia Pérez earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) Adapted Screenplay, Music (Original Score), Makeup and Hairstyling, Cinematography,...

Indies Are Pushing the Video Games Industry Forward, But at What Cost?
Image
The video game industry is in the middle of a crisis. Budgets for big releases are ballooning out of control with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020) costing up to $700 million to produce. The developer workforce has also been ravaged, with dozens of studios closing, amounting to over 10,000 layoffs in 2024 alone. Pair that with the fact that many of the titles have flopped — like Concord, whose servers didn’t even last as long as a free trial for Hulu — major questions have arisen about the health and...

She achieved more than 26.6 billion streams around the world, putting her ahead of The Weeknd at No. 2, Bad Bunny at No. 3, Drake at No. 4, and Billie Eilish at No. 5. Rounding out the top 10 were Travis Scott, Peso Pluma, Kanye West, Ariana Grande, and Feid.

Swift’s success was powered by her blockbuster album “The Tortured Poets Department,” which spent 15 weeks on top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Gwen Stefani ‘Bouquet’ Review: A Pop Icon’s Edge Gets Completely Sanded Over
Image
In an episode from the third season of Friends, Monica hooks up with a co-worker, Julio, who writes a poem inspired by their encounter titled “The Empty Vase.” Phoebe interprets the poem as a metaphor for what he really thinks of Monica: “My vessel so empty with nothing inside/Now that I’ve touched you, you seem emptier still.” Eventually, we learn that “The Empty Vase” isn’t about Monica specifically, but all American women.

The similarly titled “Empty Vase,” a drippy acoustic ballad from Gwen Stefani’s fifth solo album, Bouquet, makes Julio sound like Pablo Neruda: “I was an empty vase just sitting on the counter,” the singer laments. Even across just 10 short songs, the album’s botanical imagery grows heavy-handed and strained: gardens die, seeds are planted, vases are filled.

The second song Stefani ever wrote by herself, 2000’s “Simple Kind of Life,” was, notably, about...

The 1990s' Tombstone vs. Wyatt Earp Western Movie Battle Had One Clear Winner
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Tombstone and Wyatt Earp both battled it out to be the best and most popular Western of the 1990s, and looking back years later, theres one clear victor in this fight (and its not even close). Both Tombstone and Wyatt Earp are biopics of the iconic lawman Wyatt Earp, released just a few months apart, and they tell the same story in very different ways (with different runtimes). Tombstone, directed by George P. Cosmatos and starring Kurt Russell, was released on December 25, 1993. Wyatt Earp, directed by Lawrence Kasdan and starring Kevin Costner, was released on June 24, 1994.

Its surprisingly common for two movies with similar subject matter to be released at the same time. There are plenty of examples of the twin movies phenomenon: Armageddon and Deep Impact both sent asteroids to Earth; Antz and A Bugs Life both explored the secret lives...

Children of the Sun Review (PC)
Image
Children of the Sun is a pulpy fever dream developed by one man and published by Devolver Digital. If you took Suda 51’s Killer7, and combined it with Sniper Elite, SuperHot and Mandy, then you’d end up with something resembling René Rother’s Children of the Sun. It works beyond just being a dynamic piece of visual art too, containing some extremely satisfying gameplay that feels crunchy and tactile.

Children of the Sun is out now for PC.

Let’s just get the discussion of the game’s visuals out of the way first, because Children of the Sun is truly striking to look at. In terms of its presentation, it resembles a particularly nasty 70s grindhouse movie that has been thoroughly soaked in bleach. It is extremely stylish, at times reminding me a lot of the visual flair seen in El Paso, Elsewhere.

In fact, it shares more with El Paso,...

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Warms Up Box Office With $4.7M in Previews
Image
Let the ghost hunting begin.

Sony’s spring event pic Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has started off its North American box office run with $4.7 million in Thursday previews before rolling out everywhere on Friday.

That compares to $4.5 million in previews for the last film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which succeeded in restoring the luster to the classic franchise created by the late Ivan Reitman. His son, Jason Reitman, directed Afterlife, but this time turned over helming duties to series co-scribe Gil Kenan.

Sony expects Frozen Empire to top the weekend’s box office chart with an opening in the $43 million to $44 million range, while tracking services are suggesting $45 million or more. (Afterlife, which debuted amid the challenges posed by the pandemic era, debuted to $44 million domestically). Critics didn’t exactly embrace either film, with Frozen Empire presently sporting a not-so-fresh score of 44 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Positive audience reaction, however, may boost the movie’s box office potential.

First up is the beloved Horton family home, which was set on fire right after Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes) told Thomas (Cary Christopher) and Charlotte (Olivia and Oakley Rondou) a story about the home’s legacy.

How To Watch Curb Your Enthusiasm
Image
After 12 seasons spread across 24 years, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is coming to an end. The 12th and final season of this beloved comedy series premieres this month, on February 4, 2024. And the final season will continue "to prove how seemingly trivial details of one's day-to-day life can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events. To keep the narrative spontaneous, the series is shot without a script and cast members are given scene outlines and improvise lines as they go."

Regarding the final season, Larry David said:

"As Curb comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this 'Larry David' persona and become the person God intended me to be – the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character. And so 'Larry David,' I bid you farewell. Your misanthropy will not be missed. And for those of...

Box Office: Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Soars to Record $12.8M U.S. Opening
Image
Acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s Japanese film The Boy and the Heron flew to a record-breaking $12.8 million opening, making it the first original anime title in history to top the North American box office chart.

The whimsical movie — which earned Miyazaki his first Golden Globe nomination on Monday — wisely chose to open on a weekend when there were no new wide releases from the major Hollywood studios. The first and second weekends of December are generally quiet as the studios prepare to unwrap their big Christmas films.

This year, the holiday action gets underway in earnest next weekend when Warner Bros. opens Wonka, although it debuted in select markets overseas this weekend to a very promising $43.2 million from 37 markets, enough to rank No. 1 on the weekend global weekend chart.

The Boy and the Heron shattered other records as well, including already becoming Miyazaki’s top-grossing film domestically after earning $5.6 million on Friday from 2,205 theaters,...

Prolific Teen Titans Writer Reacts To DC Titans Cancellation
Image
Prolific Teen Titans writer Marv Wolfman reacts to HBO Max officially canceling the DC TV show Titans. HBO Max is getting ready to bid farewell to not one but two of their popular DC TV shows from Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti. After months of speculation, Titans and Doom Patrol were officially canceled in January 2023, with their respective season 4 set to wrap up both series. While the news came in the midst of HBO Max cutting multiple shows from the streaming service, the cancellation was reportedly not due to the studio's budget trimming. Titans and Doom Patrol getting axed was also not the result of DC Studios, as James Gunn clarified that he and Peter Safran had no involvement in that.

Actors from Titans and Doom Patrol have come out with statements over the last few days thanking viewers for all their support. There has also been a reaction on social...
