To understand "The Bionic Woman" heroine Jaime Sommers, you first have to get on board with "The Six Million Dollar Man." The young tennis star turned partially cyborg superhero was first introduced on "The Six Million Dollar Man" in the show's second season as a female counterpart to the series' male bionic hero. Jaime, the show told viewers, was severely injured in a skydiving accident, but cutting-edge technology allowed her to not only live through it, but also gain new skills. She had extra-strength hearing, superstrength, and the ability to run at top speeds, all of which came in handy for her new life as a schoolteacher-slash-spy.
A high-concept storyline like this one may not thrive on TV today (unless it was made by DC or Marvel), but in the '70s, audiences ate it up. Jaime's eventual death in "The Six Million Dollar Man" was so poorly received that...

Sandra Bullock is a name that immediately takes us back to one of the greatest action films ever made, Speed (1994). Over the years, the 60-year-old actress starred in many box office hits, and it wasn’t just her role as Annie Porter that brought her a lot of recognition in the world of entertainment. Bullock had to work extremely hard before landing major roles in the industry.
The Gravity actress was born on July 26, 1964, to John W. Bullock and Helga Mathilde Meyer in Arlington, Virginia. While both her parents were vocal experts, Bullock loved acting and cheerleading while growing up.

Another fact about the A-lister is that she spent a little over a decade in Germany since her father was stationed as the Army’s Military Postal Service in charge. It was during his time in Nuremberg that he met Meyer.

A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!
Knight and Day began, as with so many Hollywood screenplays, as a spec script, or a work that is uncommissioned but written in hopes of selling it to a studio (think...

Emerging star from Hong Kong, Isabella Wei, headlines Silent D Pictures’ comedy-drama “High Wire.”
The film follows the story of Go-wing, a British-Chinese takeaway girl who discovers her inner strength and artistic bravery when a circus comes to her small English town. As Go-wing navigates the challenges of her dual cultural identity, she finds herself at a crossroads and must decide between conforming to societal expectations or forging her own path towards her dreams. The film pays homage to the first and second generations of Chinese immigrants and their journey to adapt to life in England whilst facing issues of systemic racism and discrimination.
Wei’s breakout performance was in Netflix’s mystery sci-fi series “1899,” where she played the enigmatic Ling Yi, a geisha. Wei is also set to appear in Rupert Sanders’ much anticipated reboot of “The Crow” alongside Bill Skarsgård, Danny Huston and FKA Twigs.

Secret Agents. We love them. What’s not to love? They go to exotic locations, seduce beautiful women, use insanely cool gadgets, drive awesome cars, and just kick ass. I don’t know about you, but I wanted to be one when I was growing up. But the thought of doing a push-up at the time was as hard as skydiving. So I grew up, and the closest I ever got was asking for a vodka martini shaken, not stirred, at a bar once….which I immediately spit out on the floor. So yeah, I was never going to be James Bond.
But then I found a show that made me believe that in another world, a schlubby loser like me could be a superspy. What was the show? Well, it was Chuck, of course.
Yes, Chuck, the show about that Best Buy… Uh, I mean…. “Buy More”, Geek Squad…...

The 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike hit a lot of people hard. Writers finally got the raise they deserved, though many shows were affected. The strike lasted from November 5, 2007, through February 12, 2008, and none of the 12,000 writers in the guild were allowed to work during that time. Some shows were postponed, some had shortened seasons like "Pushing Daisies," and some were even canceled, like "The 4400" and "Bionic Woman."
The final season of "Battlestar Galactica" was being written during that time, and their staff had to pause like everyone else. Once things settled down, and the second half of the final...

Actress Lucy Hale ("Pretty Little Liars") poses for Dutch lingerie brand Hunkemöller, photographed by David Roemer:
"I'm at this place in my life where I accept all parts of me, not just the good parts," said Hale.
"The good, the bad and the 'ugly'. And so to feel empowered in something that is vulnerable like lingerie, that is special to me.
"To be here, shooting pieces that I had a hand in designing and actually wearing them, that just shows I have come a long way and I hope that’s apparent through all of it – the collection, the imagery, the video..."
Hale first co-starred as 'Becca Sommers' in the TV series "Bionic Woman" (2007) and as 'Rose Baker' in the series "Privileged" (2008–2009). Her breakthrough role was 'Aria Montgomery' in the Freeform TV series "Pretty Little Liars" (2010–2017) followed by playing 'Stella Abbott' in "Life Sentence" (2018) and as the "Archie" Comics character "Katy Keene" (2020).

Earlier this awards season I warned you not to count out Sophie Okonedo (“Ratched”) when making your Emmy nominations predictions. Well, not enough people listened to me, as she was the only Drama Guest Actress nominee who surprised pundits on nominations morning. The other four — Alexis Bledel (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Phylicia Rashad (“This Is Us”), Mckenna Grace (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Claire Foy (“The Crown”) — all placed within the Top 5 of Gold Derby’s combined odds. Now that Okonedo has secured the nomination, the hard part is over. I now think she’s going to win that Emmy.
Netflix’s period drama series is based on the 1962 novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and the 1975 film of the same name. Okonedo joined the “Ratched” cast in the fifth episode, “The Dance,” as a new patient at Lucia State Hospital named Charlotte Wells. Charlotte is treated for dissociative identity disorder by Dr.

When making your Emmy predictions for this year’s Best Drama Guest Actress category, remember one thing: voters love multiple personalities. This year no one fits that bill more than Sophie Okonedo, who took on the challenging role of mental institution patient Charlotte Wells on Netflix’s “Ratched.” Charlotte is treated for dissociative identity disorder by Dr. Richard Hanover (Jon Jon Briones) and Nurse Mildred Ratched (Sarah Paulson) at Lucia State Hospital, with some of her personalities being Ondine, a boastful musician, Apollo, an aggressive athlete and Baby Taffy, an innocent child.
The Emmys often go crazy for actors who undergo dual roles — just ask Toni Collette (“United States of Tara”), Lindsay Wagner (“Bionic Woman”) and Sally Field (“Sybil”). More recently, Tatiana Maslany claimed the trophy for playing countless clones on “Orphan Black.” If Okonedo is recognized for “Ratched,” it would be her first career Emmy nomination.

I'd like to start by saying that I have always been a fan of Lucy Hale. She was the main reason I tuned into Pretty Little Liars all those years ago.
Before her breakout role as Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars, Hale had a few memorable credits.
She was Robin Scherbatsky's little sister Katie on How I Met Your Mother Season 2 Episode 12, Justin's goth girlfriend Miranda on Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place and Lena Kaligaris's little sister Effie on Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants 2.
Hale was even a member of the main cast on two short-lived series: The CW's Privledged and Bionic Woman. She had one of those faces that you felt like you had seen somewhere, even if you couldn't place it. She felt like someone famous.

Say it ain't so!
Marta Kauffman, co-creator and executive producer of Friends, had some chilling news to offer to fans of the series during the Tribeca TV Festival today.
If you're spending time swirling ideas around your head about what a Friends reunion or revival could bring, you're gonna need a new hobby.
There will be no reboot. There will be no revival. Heck, there won't even be a reunion.
17 Things We Would Need from a Friends Revival
“We will not be doing a reunion show, we will not be doing a reboot,” Kauffman said.
“The show was about that time in life when friends are your family,” she explained, adding that life changes when your family becomes your family.
And if you're reeling from the news and hoping that her co-creator and executive producer David Crane might come to the rescue, think again.
“We did the show we wanted to do.

NBC has given a put pilot order to “TriBeCa,” a family drama from Greg Berlanti and “Supergirl” showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner, TheWrap has learned.
Based on the Korean series “Sky Castle” from Jtbc, the one-hour drama is described as a sophisticated family drama set in New York’s most expensive Zip code. The series explores the inner lives of a group of families and the lengths they will go to ensure their children succeed, regardless of the cost.
A put pilot commitment means that the network has agreed to air the pilot, but does not guarantee the project will go to series. If the network chooses not to air the pilot, it will owe a financial penalty to the studio.

Avengers: Endgame gave us a Hulk in the laboratory. Now Disney+ will be giving us a She-Hulk in the courtroom.
One of the better parts of Avengers: Endgame was the fact that Professor Hulk was a viable character, able to exist in normal scenes without sticking out like a sore thumb. Once they had that tech figured out, it was only a matter of time before She-Hulk became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And now, here we are, with the announcement of She-Hulk getting her own Disney+ show!
She-Hulk is high on the list of “top Marvel characters to not yet show up in the McU,” especially now that both the X-Men and Fantastic Four are inevitable arrivals. Since her introduction in 1980, she’s been a major fixture in Marvel and a fresh enough take on an existing property that she rarely feels redundant when standing next to her brutish cousin.

Dynamite Entertainment's "Charlie's Angels vs The Bionic Woman", available July 3, 2019, is written by Cameron Deordio and illustrated by Soo Lee, with covers by Cat Staggs:
"...when 'Charlie's Angels' pick up an assignment to steal a dangerous patent and put it back in the hands of its mysterious inventor, they encounter their toughest counterspy yet: 'The Bionic Woman', 'Jaime Sommers'.
"Then when the 'Office of Scientific Investigation' is privatized and its patents sold off to the highest bidder, a military contractor looks to take bionics to the battlefield. Will the 'Bionic Woman' be able to protect the patent from the would-be thieves, or will the 'Angels' prevail, mothballing the formula's military applications in favor of medical uses?..."

TV was riding higher than ever on the nostalgia wave in 2018 — and we have the numbers to prove it.
Our Year in Review continues with a look back at 26 of the best small-screen reunions that took place over the last 12 months. That’s up from 22 that made the cut this time last year, and wayyyy up from the 15 that merited inclusion the year before that.
These reunions came in many forms: The casts of Degrassi and Victorious, for example, reassembled for unforgettable music videos, while other ensembles — including that of Roseanne and Murphy Brown — reprised the roles that made them famous so many years ago.

It took an impassioned three-and-a-half-hour presentation, sometimes nearly punctuated by tears, to convince Lindsay Wagner (“The Bionic Woman”) to take a creative leap of faith and appear in a video game in development by Hideo Kojima, the auteur game-maker recently told Variety.
Long a fan of Wagner’s work, Kojima said he wanted her for his upcoming game, “Death Stranding,” but knew she famously didn’t like to do work that depicted violence.
“When I first tried to approach her, her agent mentioned this,” Kojima told Variety through a translator. “But I really wanted her to be in the project, so I said I just wanted to meet her and talk with her.”
Wagner had heard of his request and did a bit of research, discovering that many of Kojima’s past games, while featuring violence, had anti-nuclear warfare themes. So she agreed to the meeting.

It’s a good time to fight like a girl. The new Wonder Woman movie is a big hit. Everyone from Billy Tucci to my mom seems to like it. Fox News managed to complain about the level of patriotism in the movie, but whatever; every party needs a pooper.
I thought it was great fun, and yesterday’s Biographic strip in sundry newspapers taught me something I didn’t remember. It turns out Wonder Woman’s first animated appearance was on an episode of The Brady Kids. It predated Superfriends by one year! This show was a spin-off of the Brady Bunch series. Even as a young fan, I remember watching this cartoon was pretty painful. At that time, I preferred Marcia Brady to Wonder Woman… but, hey, it’s still cool that it actually happened.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best one-and-done show, a.k.a. a One-Season Wonder? (This refers to shows that only got one season and tragically did not get renewed, as opposed to limited series that never intended to continue.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
There are so many! But for me the best will always be “Freaks and Geeks.” It’s a show that I watched at an age before I really understood the whole TV renewal/cancellation process, but even then I knew it was unjustly short. The show was such a great blend of smarts, snark, and genuine emotions, in a way that could actually be painful to watch.

HeyUGuys were on hand to witness the beaming of Audible’s new audio drama Alien: River of Pain into space at an exclusive first-listen event. It was held at the stunning Royal Observatory in Greenwich’s planetarium ahead of the audio drama’s release on 26th April, which is officially Alien Day.
In many ways the location is perfect for such an event as the Royal Observatory Greenwich is one of the most important historic scientific sites in the world. Since its founding in 1675, Greenwich has been at the centre of the measurement of time and space, and you can actually still stand on the historic Prime Meridian line there. In many ways it was completely surreal to be there to witness an occasion that was part Carl Sagan’s Contact and part showbiz extravaganza at its finest.

In the 1970s, there were few genuine heroes on prime time television and even fewer of them were close to being considered “super”. Instead, the three networks fed us giggly television, glossy and empty private eyes, and increasingly silly fare. As a result, our affection for the few genuine heroes is probably enhanced. Over on ABC, there was the Six Million Dollar Man and its spinoff, The Bionic Woman, along with Wonder Woman, for one season before it was moved to CBS. You might consider Kwai Chang Caine from Kung Fu or Carl Kolchak from The Night Stalker, but they lacked what you would consider powers.
Fans, of course, imagined these characters interacting since, after all, they were on the same network, which felt like the same comic book company. Sadly, though, the Amazon Princess’ adventures were during World War II, complicating any such meetings.

Let's call this "The Episode When Kensi Wakes Up," for better or worse.
There are other happenings on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 6, but they're all secondary to Kensi finally speaking in complete sentences, albeit grimly.
Kensi finds out that she has an incomplete spinal-cord injury, according to the nameless neurologist, whose attitude seems to suggest that she needs to buck up and get better. It just may take four to six months of therapy.
Kensi is used to dealing with things she can hit or shoot into submission and obscure nerve damage certainly isn't that.
Deeks does what he can to cheer up Kensi, ordering her favorite takeout to be delivered to an outside table. But she's too upset to eat and has a nurse take her back to her room.
Deeks puts a positive spin on things, telling Kensi that he's seeing slow, steady progress.

One of the most rewarding things about any superhero property is seeing the evolution of the world. Oftentimes characters are introduced as one thing, and ultimately become something after going through a life-changing event. Bucky Barnes' evolution in the Captain America Films is a good example of that, but it's by no means the only one in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, nor will it be the last.
One character who may go through such a change is Misty Knight, who is set to get introduced in the upcoming Luke Cage Netflix series. Fans of the comics know that she's no pushover, and after surviving a bombing, she loses one of her arms, and has it replaced by none other than Tony Stark. While I'm highly doubtful she will undergo a Tony Stark-related character arc in this series (Netflix series and theatrical releases tend to steer clear of one another), there...

The Supporting Actress Smackdown Of 1977 is coming. You already met two of our panelists. And here are the other three (including me).
Meet The Panelists
Panelist: Sara Black McCulloch
Bio: Sara Black McCulloch is a Toronto-based researcher, translator and writer. She has written for i-d, cleo Journal, Adult, The Hairpin, Gawker, Bitch Magazine and The National Post. You can read more of her work here.
Question: What does 1977 mean to you?
1977 seemed to be steeped in so much disillusionment. I think that, like the years that signal the end of a decade but don't quite bookend it, it was...fraught. The year was packed with events that pointed to change and fueled uncertainty. It was the year the U.S. signed the nuclear-proliferation pact and the same year that the U.S. government voted against covering elective abortions through Medicaid. The Apple II computer hit the market and Jimmy Carter...

How British comics Bunty and Mandy had more fun with science fiction and fantasy stories than they were ever given credit for...
In some ways, the 80s and early 90s weren’t such a terrible time for young girls and speculative fiction. We had a few of our own exciting toy-based animated shows, like She-Ra and Jem And The Holograms – but the really big franchises aimed at us were things like My Little Pony and Care Bears, which while full of magic and joy didn’t have the same kind of appeal for slightly older girls as stuff like Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Thundercats. In much of the really popular kids’ media of the time, a girl was something you had one of, just sort of hanging around. I’d watch every Turtles episode hoping that April would get something cool to do this week.

40 years ago today, “The Bionic Woman” premiered on ABC. A spin-off of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “Bionic Woman” gave Jaime Sommers her own series. For three seasons (starting on ABC, then moving to NBC), viewers watched Jaime on spy missions where, thanks to her bionics, she can run faster than 60 miles per hour, use advanced hearing and extraordinary strength in her right arm. “Bionic Woman” got an NBC remake in 2007 but only aired eight episodes before the WGA Strike halted production. Other notable January 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1990: Giacomo Puccini opera “Tosca” premiered in Rome. • 1952: “The Today Show” debuted on NBC. • 1963: Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” was published in England under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. • 1966: David Bowie’s single “Can’t Help Thinking About Me” was released in the U.K. It later became the first record of his to be released in the U.

At a time when sci-fi films were not particularly popular, a movie burst onto cinema screens that changed everything. Breaking box office records, Star Wars created the fanatic film culture that exists today. Cinelinx takes a look at the incredible impact Star Wars had in 1977.
For the younger people who weren’t around when Star Wars debuted in theaters 38 years ago, it’s hard to describe the impact that Star Wars 4: a New Hope had when it debuted. The effect it had on the fans and on the film industry itself was unprecedented.
In the 1970s, sci-fi films were not very big. This was an era of gritty realism, so films like the Godfather (Parts 1&2) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest were the industry standard for what studios and fans wanted. The popularity of the sci-fi genre had faded after the sci-fi boom of the 1950s, and...

Martin E. Brooks, the actor, producer, director, and teacher best known for his work as Dr. Rudy Wells on the Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman series, died Monday in Studio City, California. Movie producer Jon Landau, son of Brooks's longtime partner, confirmed the 90-year-old's death with THR, citing natural causes. Brooks began as Wells for The Six Million Dollar Man in 1975, owning the role throughout the rest of the decade there and on The Bionic Woman, as well as into the ’80s and ’90s with three related TV movies. Although Wells was his most recognizable character, Brooks enjoyed a TV career that spanned more than four decades, appearing in other such shows as Gunsmoke, Planet of the Apes, Dallas, Cagney & Lacey, and Hunter. The Bronx native also made his mark on (and off-) Broadway in the ’50s and ’60s, in such plays as An Enemy of the People,...
