Updated with Cannes Film Festival statement, writethru: The international industry is digesting the sudden news that veteran French distributor and producer Samuel Hadida died following a short illness on Monday at the age of 64. Reactions have streamed in about a man who folks agree was passionate, joyful and one-of-a-kind (see tweets below).
FilmNation chief Glen Basner tells Deadline this morning, “I love Sammy and will miss him dearly. His enthusiasm and passion for all things made him larger-than-life, but it also applied to our friendship that made it more meaningful and have more depth. It was familial and what I will miss most.”
Indeed, I recall one recent Cannes Film Festival which was so plagued by rain that execs were doing deals on their phones from hotel lobbies. When I ran into Hadida in the Majestic, he told me he’d just closed a film with Basner but wouldn’t...

The best years of American Idol are admittedly behind it. That's bound to happen with any show that has run for more than decade. American Idol is determined to not go quietly into the metaphorical TV night with its farewell season.
We already saw some moving (and "amusing") moments from the season premiere, which included Kayne West "auditioning". In anticipation, American Idol has treated us with more sneak peek clips from the second night of auditions. If the clips are any indication the second night of American Idol season 15 should be every bit as good as the first.

This is actually about a year old, but I learned of its existence just last night. So I assume some of you have seen it, while others, like myself, have not. The title speaks for itself, I think. And those "old school" hip hop heads - especially if you grew up, as I did, during the years when Boogie Down Productions reigned supreme (for me, it was in the late 1980's into the early 1990's) - will probably appreciate this even more. In my opinion, those were some of The best years for rap music - 1989 was especially a great year - and I still, with the same gusto, listen to the music I grew up on, today, 25 years later, older, more discerning, etc, and it all still feels quite...

Last month David Fincher’s Gone Girl made a smash at the box office. As if plugged directly into the Zeitgeist, it seemed as if everyone had a take on the film’s views on gender, the media and marriage. Gone Girl was a sensation that turned the camera inward, revealing our discomfort with the institution of marriage. While the butt of many jokes, marriage is perceived as an important pillar in our understanding of families, social values and personal happiness. Yet, it remains behind closed doors. We understand marriage within the realms of our own experience, our parents, our friends and our own marriages. Yet, we are only ever truly familiar with our own intimate relationships and even that is under debate. If anything, Gone Girl shows that within marriage there are two sides to every story. Marriage is veiled with a certain air of mystery and the question...

A remake of the 1960s-70s series "Love, American Style" is in the works at CBS -- although "remake" might not be the right term to apply here.
According to Deadline, the new show would drop the anthology format that was "Love, American Style's" signature when it ran on ABC from 1969-74. The show had a semi-regular cast of performers, but it mostly relied on guest stars to tell a series of brief stories about love each week. The new version would focus on four couples who represent some of "the many stages of love."
"Being Erica" creator Jana Sinyor and Aaron Martin ("The Best Years") are collaborating on the pilot script. (Both writers, somewhat ironically, are Canadian; they worked together on "Erica" and "Degrassi: The Next Generation.") They'll also executive produce along with Kim and Eric Tannenbaum ("Two and a Half Men").

Exclusive: CBS has put in development Love, American Style, a contemporary version of the 1970s comedy anthology series. The new version, from CBS TV Studios and the Tannenbaum Co, is not keeping the anthology format of the original, which has proven hard to sustain these days as evidenced by such recent efforts as NBC’s Love Bites. CBS’ Love, American Style – written by Canadian scribes Jana Sinyor, creator of Being Erica, and Aaron Martin, creator of The Best Years — follows the lives of four couples who are connected through the many stages of love and their complicated relationships. Sinyor and Martin executive produce with Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Madhouse Entertainment’s Robyn Meisinger and Adam Kolbrenner. The original series, produced by Paramount TV, ran on ABC for five seasons and has enjoyed a healthy off-network syndication afterlife as a daytime staple. Hear that? It's the sound of women everywhere sighing over Sean Lowe's performance on the April 8 episode of Dancing With the Stars. In a nod to both his fiancee and the theme of the evening, "The Best Years of Their Lives," Lowe, 29, dedicated his Viennese Waltz to Bachelor love Catherine Giudici, whom he approached at the end of the dance and kissed for all to see. "Without question, the best year of my life was 2012," he said in a behind-the-scenes clip before the performance. [...]...

This week The Morrison Hotel Gallery in SoHo is showcasing a rarely seen collection of images by rock 'n' roll photographer Barrie Wentzell. The exhibit, titled "Melody Maker: The Best Years, 1965-1975," details Wentzell's early career, as he worked during the height of the British Invasion to capture some of the period's most legendary icons, from The Beatles to The Who to Elton John.
He also managed to take this snapshot of another English rock bander, known for his blues-driven, hard rock sound. Though the silk shirt and plaid pants combo is a little distracting, you should be able to recognize the double-neck guitar hero...
Revealed in all his patterned glory; it's Jimmy Page. Taken by Wentzell in 1970, the image shows Page in the thick of Led Zeppelin success, donning his signature wavy brown locks and puckish smile.

Just where do vampires go to learn how to deal with humans on a day-to-day basis? Can't exactly head down to the nearest etiquette class or check out a local finishing school. Vamps have to be a bit more creative. Thankfully they have Valemont... a place that teaches the undead how to deal with the not yet undead.
On Halloween 2011 Cambio.com is going to feature Valemont in feature-length format, meaning there will be plenty of fangs, blood and brooding for everyone in this story about the education of vampires. Since music videos basically don't exist anymore, MTV needs to find some programs to keep them afloat until "Beavis and Butt-Head" begin to dominate again. "Teen Wolf" is the first of those shows. Now MTV is hoping Valemont scores a big film victory for them.
Read on for all the details and what to expect from Valemont. And prepare for...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the "On the Road Again" episode of Brothers & Sisters.
The death of Robert McCallister (Rob Lowe) in Sunday night's season finale of Brothers & Sisters may have been one of the worst-kept secrets in television history.
But the same episode, "On the Road Again," contained another a pivotal plot-twist that caught many viewers by complete surprise.
Uncle Saul, played by Ron Rifkin, is HIV-positive.
He joins an extremely small number of gay characters on scripted American television who have ever been identified as HIV-positive. The last such character, at least in such a high-profile TV project, may have been the character of Vince Taylor (Anthony Azizi) on the 2005-2006 series Commander-in-Chief.
Other regular gay or bisexual HIV-positive characters in TV history include Lee Campbell on The Best Years (a Canadian import that aired on The N in 2007), and several characters on the Showtime series Queer as Folk.

The actress reprised her role as Mandy Richardson on the Channel 4 show last month after a two-year break.
