Summer is officially here, but thanks to HBO’s latest releases, bingeing TV shows and movies on the couch may be preferable to a day at the beach. New original programming includes the premiere of “The Night Of,” a gritty new New York based miniseries, and “Vice Principals,” a dark comedy about feuding administrators.
Returning programming includes Dwayne Johnson’s “Ballers” and “Looking: The Movie,” which sums up the story of gay men in San Francisco that was explored in HBO’s recently canceled series.

Theatrical highlights include “Straight Outta Compton,” “Suffragette” and “The Bourne Ultimatum.” Also be sure to catch “Ali” and celebrate the life of the boxing legend before the biopic leaves HBO Now at the end of July.
Below are all of the titles hitting HBO Now in July 2016, plus IndieWire’s picks on what to stream.

After a strong start, 10 seasons and multiple spin-offs took Stargate Sg-1 further and further away from its original premise...
I’ve recently had time to catch-up on the staple of afternoon television when I was a lad, Stargate Sg-1. First launched in 1997, it ran for ten seasons and it’s aged surprisingly well, in no small part due to it being heavily character-driven and fairly horror-focussed for its first two runs. This is most likely thanks to its first five seasons airing on sex-and-guts cable channel Showtime, while its later seasons aired the more clean-cut Syfy channel in the Us. All in all, it’s rip-roaring sci-fi; the kind of ‘explore and fight with interesting plots and great character arcs’ storytelling that filled the void left by successive Star Trek series which never quite captured the wonder of the unknown in the way that the Original Series or The Next Generation did.

Warner Bros. and MGM have just sent out an official press release that confirms their plans to produce a new trilogy of Stargate films based on the classic 1994 sci-fi feature starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. According the to release, the first film will be directed by none other than Roland Emmerich himself (Emmerich directed the first) while being produced by Dean Devlin, his longtime partner and co-writer of the original.
The new re-imagined trilogy will seek to go back and build upon the Stargate universe that began in the original film and carried over into numerous TV spin-offs (Stargate: Sg-1, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate: Universe) and two direct-to-dvd movies (Stargate: The Ark of Truth, Stargate: Continuum). Devlin and Emmerich went on to say that “the Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy.

ABC wants to expand Good Morning America to three hours, the New York Daily News claims, which would let it compete against the four hour Today Show. The article gets confusing, however, since it seems to discuss local programming
Own has ordered Tulsa, a mini-series starring Octavia Spencer about the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 that left one of the wealthiest African-American communities destroyed. The event has been suppressed from the history books until recently. Additionally, Toni Braxton will star in the channel’s upcoming movie about Darlene Love.

David Letterman‘s resignation announcement has prompted the expected speculation about his potential replacement. That includes Vulture‘s call for Neil Patrick Harris, Slate‘s argument for Ellen DeGeneres and Think Progress’ list of 12 unexpected suggestions.

I never really got into MacGyver, but I got my Richard Dean Anderson fix on Stargate Sg-1.
Stargate, as many of you I’m sure remember, was a 1994 movie which circled around a gigantic ring made of unknown metal and covered in what is believed to be Egyptian hieroglyphs that is discovered buried in the sands of Giza, Egypt in during an archeological expedition in 1928. The purpose of the ring remained a mystery for sixty years, its hieroglyphs untranslatable. Finally a brilliant linguist and archaeologist specializing in Egyptology named Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is co-opted by the U.S. government and brought to Cheyenne Mountain (home of Norad) to decipher the scrawlings on the ring, which has been brought there for study and possible use by the military.
He tells the assembled scientists and military officers (including United States Air Force Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell) that the hieroglyphs...

Russell Tovey has joined the cast of the HBO drama Looking, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tovey will have a recurring role in HBO’s upcoming drama about gay men living in San Francisco, as a man who works with Jonathan Groff‘s character.
Waking up naked in Golden Gate Park would be welcome, hunting like a predator, not so much.
TVLine reports that Fox is developing a drama based on Jonathan Kellerman‘s novels about a “crime-solving psychologist, who joins forces with a closeted gay Lapd detective”. Anyone familiar with Kellerman’s work? Should we be excited about this?
Is FX’s The Bridge a show that has succeeded by being the anti-Killing? By focusing beyond the murder mystery and bringing the characters and setting to life, Time argues that the FX drama has learned some important lessons from AMC’s critical-darling-turned-critical-pariah.

It’s finally official, creator Dan Harmon will return to manage the fifth season of Community.
In talking with Vulture Guillermo Diaz says the cast of Scandal doesn’t take their show’s twists and turns any better than the audience does, “We’re constantly like, ‘Oh my God! This is really happening!’ We all look at each other, and we all look at (Scandal producer) Shonda (Rhimes), and she’s like, ‘Yep.’ She kind of shrugs like, Yeah. I know.”
Don’t worry, Diaz also discuses Huck‘s wig.
Fox has picked a new producer for American Idol, hiring a producer who recently managed the Swedish version of Idol.
Blergh indeed:

A number of quality and compelling shows are starting to trickle down into the Us from our neighbors to the north, with Continuum being one of the most well-known. However, there's another that managed to have a brief run on NBC before getting canceled with a few episodes of its first season left unaired: the medical drama Saving Hope. While the series remains alive and well in Canada, with its second season starting later this year, for American audiences DVD or a streaming service will be the only way to track it down. And while it might not be the most compelling or grounded medical drama to ever come about, it has an interesting cast of characters with strong leads in the form of Smallville's Erica Durance and Michael Shanks. If you're hungering for a new medical drama, Saving Hope is a viable option.

Plus a Spanish-language Breaking Bad and does Fox’s Gavin & Stacy remake work News
Fox unveiled its fall schedule which doesn’t include any of the big moves that people speculated would happen. Glee will air on Thursday (but will apparently take a hiatus) to make room for the Greg Kinnear series Rake. American Idol and The X-Factor aren’t cutting back. Tuesday nights continue to be comedy night. The one major change is a plan to move Bones and Raising Hope to Friday.
Fox also announced it is returning to the mini-series genre, reviving 24 as a 12-hour story and ordering Wayward Pines, a Twin Peaks-inspired thriller from The Playboy Club creator Chad Hodge. it’s also developing a mini-series about Billy the Kid.
Meanwhile, Fox also released trailers for its new shows. I have a feeling you’ll be most interested in Us & Them, the Americanization of Gavin & Stacey.

If you watched the British series "Primeval" (which we absolutely loved), then this news should be of interest: Building on its success with acquired series such as "Lost Girl" and "Continuum," Syfy will air the "Primeval" spinoff "Primeval: New World" beginning Saturday, June 8th.
From the Press Release:
The 13-episode "Primeval: New World" stars Niall Matter ("Eureka"), Sara Canning ("The Vampire Diaries"), and Danny Rahim ("Eastenders") as a team of animal experts and scientists investigating paranormal events while battling both prehistoric and futuristic creatures. Amanda Tapping, who starred in the Syfy series "Sanctuary" and is currently recurring on "Supernatural," directed several episodes.
Based on the original "Primeval" series from Impossible Pictures, the "Primeval: New World" creative team is led by executive producers Martin Wood ("Sanctuary," "Stargate: Atlantis") and Gillian Horvath ("Sanctuary," Highlander"). The spinoff was created by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens ("Star Trek: Enterprise", Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World...

It looks like our summer is shaping up very nicely, thanks to some excellent scheduling by The Powers That Be. At least our weekends will be taken care of. True Blood will almost certainly return in its usual Sunday at 9/8c slot, so there’s Sunday sorted. We told you earlier today that Zero Hour will be airing Saturdays at 8/7c, which fits in perfectly with this latest scheduling announcement: Primeval: New World will be airing Saturdays at 9/8c, followed by Sinbad at 10/9c on Syfy.
You may recall that we told you about the Syfy pickup of Primeval: New World back in October. You’ll recognize it as a spinoff from the original Primeval which aired here originally on BBC America. You’ll also recognize the star, Niall Matter, as Zane from the late great Eureka. Primeval: New World is another series acquired by Syfy from our pals up in Canada,...

A three-time Emmy nominee, Goldsmith composed music for over 330 episodes of the long running Stargate sci-fi franchise, created by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. Eventful week. To play catch-up:
The big news that every site reported in a slightly different way is that Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome will be a digital series and a TV film, but not a TV show, at least not one produced by Syfy/Universal Cable Prods. You have probably read the Deadline article by now.
With the possibility that Universal may still shop B&C around, it doesn't sound like they have any immediate plans to make more of it beyond the existing pilot/web series/Mow.
No word yet on a release date, but Battlestar Wiki reports that we'll be seeing Blood & Chrome as a web series first and then as a TV movie.
Doug Drexler posted this the other day (full post at the link):

Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) share wine and dinner and she likes to be spend time alone with him, as does he with her; well who wouldn't want to get Sheppard alone?!! She didn't thank him for rescuing her from Michael (Connor Trinneer) and he doesn't remember that rescue, cos it never happened, at least not yet anyway. Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks) tells him he didn't rescue her; Sheppard bleeds, he was hallucinating and wakes up next to Ronan (Jason Momoa). That must have been a shock to him, as he was already in shock from his injuries. They have been buried after the explosion at Michael's compound. Many production teams drip-feed news about casting - often as a means of keeping their film on the public radar - and it seems The Dark Knight Rises is no exception.
We've just learned of another actor who is part of Chris Nolan's closely-guarded Batman movie, which is now shooting and is set for release on July 20, 2012.
Stargate star Christopher Judge has tweeted: "I can finally confirm: I have been cast in The Dark Knight Rises."
Judge did not disclose who he is playing but he has a distinctive look, build and voice, which could point towards a noteworthy role. Fans have been speculating that he may have been cast as Ubu, the musclebound henchman and bodyguard of archvillain Ra's al Ghul, and this seems a plausible option.

A Vancouver institution is coming to an end. After almost two decades of being filmed at Bridge Studios, the Stargate franchise has finally been declared dead in its current form.
The announcement was made by Brad Wright, co-creator and co-executive producer of Stargate Sg-1, Stargate Atlantis and Sgu: Stargate Universe. Wright broke the bad news at Creation Entertainment's Official Stargate Convention in Vancouver this weekend.
"It was a great ride and I felt really good about [Sgu] and about Stargate in general," Wright is quoted on GateWorld as saying. "When something's been a part of your life for 15 years, it kind of takes you over."
The Stargate television series were spin-offs of the 1994 theatrical science fiction film, Stargate, directed by Roland Emmerich. The most recent series, Stargate Universe, was effectively canceled before Christmas when Syfy made it known that they would not be ordering a third season.

Brad Wright has confirmed that he is still keen to produce more projects expanding the worlds of Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. However, the producer told GateWorld that plans for two straight-to-dvd Stargate movies have been shelved. "The only thing that is blocking [those movies] is the fact that the direct-to-dvd market has gone away," he argued. After "Stargate" finished its run (second only to "Doctor Who" in number of seasons for science fiction show), it had a couple of straight-to-dvd movies that tied up loose ends of the story. "Stargate: The Ark of Truth" and "Stargate: Continuum" put together decent enough business on DVD and then aired eventually on the Sci-Fi Channel. And I'm allowed to spell it without pain because technically they aired before the name degradation. Then "Stargate Atlantis" finished up its run rather abruptly, getting a final episode that felt more like a season finale than any sort of wrap up to the series. A couple of movies were promised to wrap up loose ends (i.e., basically all of them) but it was understood fairly quickly that the ratings of "Atlantis" hadn't been quite up to what had been hoped for, and a new spin off "Stargate Universe" was getting up and running instead.

So what’s the deal on those “Stargate: SG1″ and “Stargate: Atlantis” movies that we were promised a while back, before “Stargate: Universe” became a hit for SyFy? According to producer Brad Wright, it was a combination of many things — MGM’s current money woes, the DVD market not being what it once was, and just pure bad timing. Via TVDeathRay: The only thing that is blocking the Sg-1 movie or the Atlantis movie, the only thing, is the fact that the direct-to-dvd market has gone away. We were very fortunate with Ark of Truth and Continuum to be among the last very successful direct-to-dvd releases before it all stopped happening. The market has change, and it’s still changing, and it’s not what it was. And, of course, there have been very big changes at MGM that kind of added to that. But we had the intentions to make them.

Actor Michael Shanks is pessimistic about reprising the role of Dr. Daniel Jackson in future DVD movie spin-offs of the sci-fi series Stargate Sg-1, according to Sci Fi Wire. Shanks was part of the regular cast for most of the series' 10-season run and appeared in two direct-to-disc movies, The Ark of Truth and Stargate Continuum, that were released in 2008.
The success of those movies led to speculation that further feature-length Sg-1 adventures were likely to be made. Given the two-year gap since the release of Stargate Continuum and the success the original cast members are having with other projects, though, Shanks is not optimistic that will now happen.

There are a lot of sci-fi movies getting remade including one my favorite films that really changed modern sci-fi, Forbidden Planet.
Now Disney’s The Black Hole, another personal favorite of mine is getting remade and Tron Legacy duo are the ones who are going develop the remake from the 1979 film.
Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey have teamed up with writer Travis Beacham for the reinvention of The Black Hole, a 1979 Disney sci-fi film that held the record for most expensive Disney movie at the time of its making.
The original film followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist, commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that...

By Melissa Girimonte Interest is piqued thanks to "Stargate: Universe," and the scripts have been written. But it may be some time until the next Stargate films come to life on DVD. According to SciFi Wire, "Stargate: Universe" executive producer Robert C. Cooper has penned film scripts for both "Stargate Sg-1" and "Stargate: Atlantis" but with all efforts being placed on the launch of the new television series this fall, production of these have been put on hold. "We're ready to go," Cooper said. "We're just waiting for the right opportunity." In the past, "Sg-1" straight-to-dvd films were a lucrative venture, with "Continuum" and "The Ark of Truth" boasting solid sales. The industry has been hit hard financially, posing a challenge to any new productions in the once-lucrative ...

Production on further straight-to-dvd Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis movies has been frozen by the recession. Speaking during the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour, Stargate writer and executive producer Robert C. Cooper suggested that everything is in place for production to begin but the cameras won't roll until there is more certainty that the films will sell.
"We're ready to go," he told Sci Fi Wire. "We're just waiting for the right opportunity. We want to be successful with it. The studio wants to be successful, and we really don't want to proceed with something in the wrong climate, which I think financially it is right now."
Members of the Stargate production team are on the TCA tour promoting Sgu: Stargate Universe, the latest series in the science fiction franchise. It debuts on Syfy on October 2. Cooper co-created Sgu with Brad Wright and the pair also served as show-runners on SG1 and Atlantis.

... At least that's what Stargate producer Robert C. Cooper is saying. Cooper has written scripts for another Stargate Sg-1 DVD movie and the first Stargate Atlantis flick, but those projects are on the back burner for now. Cooper and MGM are focusing on the launch of Syfy's Stargate Universe before those movie scripts go into production. Oh, and the sh*tty economy isn't helping either.

Syfy will air a ten-hour Stargate Sg-1 marathon on Sept. 25 in anticipation of the Oct. 2 premiere of Stargate Universe. Like I mentioned earlier at SciFi Squad, the network is asking fans to pick their ten favorite Sg-1 eps for inclusion in the marathon.
I was never a big Sg-1 fan, but I'll be popping in and out of the marathon to catch some of the series' more popular eps. Hopefully, Syfy will do fans a solid by capping off the marathon with Stargate Continuum, last year's excellent Stargate DVD movie.Continue reading Stargate: Continuum should be a part of Syfy's upcoming marathon

With so much fuss being made about J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, it's easy to forget that there is another successful franchise out there with Star... in the title. That would be Stargate, which is due for its own sort of makeover later this year with the premiere of Stargate Universe. This is no sign that the concept is struggling, though. Indeed, the slew of awards that Stargate productions won at the recent Leo Awards in Vancouver, British Columbia (the home base of CinemaSpy) shows that it continues to be admired.
The Leo Awards are presented by the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of B.C.. They were established in 1998 to celebrate excellence in film and television productions that are made in the province. Stargate series and movies are largely filmed in Vancouver. At this years Celebration and Gala Ceremonies for the Leos, which took place on May 8 and...

One of Sci-Fi channels most successful TV offerings, Stargate Atlantis, may be ending early 2009, but that doesn’t stop the network from milking the show’s success. In fact, it was recently announced that the show, which will end its run in January, will become the basis of a new two-hour film that would air a little after the end of the season. The producers are planning to emulate the success of its parents series, Stargate Sg-1, which spawned two direct-to-dvd films, The Ark of Truth and Continuum.
“We're excited to tell 'Atlantis' stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original 'Stargate' movies, 'The Ark of Truth' and 'Continuum,' have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers,” series co-creators Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright explained in a statement. “We have plans for both 'Sg-1' and 'Atlantis' to remain vital as we expand the franchise.

When its fifth season concludes in January 2009, "Stargate: Atlantis" will shift from a weekly ongoing series on the SciFi Channel to at least one two-hour movie on that network, then could join "Stargate Sg-1" in the direct-to-dvd market, according to Multichannel News. Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie have been selected to write the movie's script. Just which cast members will jump from the television series to the film and on is not yet certain. However, look for the film to be released on DVD in early 2009. "We're excited to tell 'Atlantis' stories on a bigger canvas," said Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, who co-created both "Stargate Sg-1" and "Atlantis," in a statement. "The successes of the two original 'Stargate' direct-to-video movies 'The Ark Of Truth' and 'Continuum' have ...

With the release of "Stargate: Continuum" just days away, MGM already is talking with executive producer Brad Wright about keeping the direct-to-dvd movie franchise going. "We might be making another movie," Wright told a packed crowd at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Friday. "MGM has suggest we start thinking about that and start putting a story together, and that's what we're doing right now." But not just a movie ... it seems that MGM is confident SciFi Channel or some television outlet will pick up the previously announced third series "Stargate: Universe" as well. This review contains Major Spoilers for "Continuum," the upcoming direct-to-dvd movie for "Stargate Sg-1." Don.t mistake .Continuum. for a new adventure; instead, it.s a collection of the best bits from the last ten seasons all tied together to form one cohesive story. Think of the popular tales .There But For The Grace Of God. and .Mobius,. where time is changed and the world comes close to an end only this time it is on a slightly larger scale. During the execution of the last Ba.al (Cliff Simon) clone, Teal.c (Christopher Judge) and Vala (Claudia Black) mysteriously vanish and Gen. O.Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is killed, forcing the rest of the team back through the gate. When they materialize home however, it is to a very different world. Not only was the Stargate program never created, ...
