This was intended as a pilot for an American version of The IT Crowd (2006). New management at NBC didn't like it, and canceled it before any more episodes were filmed.
In 2014, British actor Richard Ayoade, who appeared in the original series, revealed on The Graham Norton Show that he regretted playing the same role in this remake. He said "I was the only one dumb enough to do it. It was deeply weird."
NBC has been trying to turn The IT Crowd into the next The Office for several years. The network first began its troubled love affair when it produced this failed pilot in 2007, one year after the original British version originally aired. In 2014, NBC gave a pilot commitment to a new version that came from Bill Lawrence (of Scrubs and Clone High fame), but it didn't come to fruition. Then, in 2017, NBC announced it was trying again, but this time with the backing of the series' original creator, Graham Linehan. After the announcement, Linehan promised on Twitter the American version would be different from the British series. This new version has yet to be produced as of 2022.
