Germany’s newest scripted confab, Seriesly Berlin, takes place later this month and the schedule is coming together.
Four-part Prime Video series German Cocaine Cowboy from Beetz Brothers Film Production will be teased, while the streamer’s Country Director for Germany, Christoph Schneider, will appear in a fireside chat that I’ll be moderating to offer insights into content strategy. German Cocaine Cowboy tells the story of a German who became involved in the Cali Cartel in the 1990s.
Also scheduled to appear at Seriesly is Mel Eslyn, the President of Duplass Brothers Productions, which is known for Netflix’s Wild Wild Country and HBO’s Somebody Somewhere. She’ll discuss indie filmmaking in the context of serial production, and will present the European premiere of Penelope, the indie young adult series that premiered at Sundance. Netflix later snagged U.S. rights to the show, which Eslyn co-created with Mark Duplass,...

Even in this age of instant YouTube gratification, movie trailers are a big deal. They get us hyped for an upcoming project by making promises that the eventual film will (hopefully) pay off. The best sizzle reels are even able to do this by giving a taste of things to come without ruining any surprises or plot twists. Think about the teaser for Alien with its cracking egg and unnerving siren sound, or the deft use of a choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep” in the classic promo for The Social Network. Both of those examples speak to the haunting nature of their movies while allowing space for the film to stand on its own down the road.
But some trailers do their job too well. Some trailers outdo the movies they advertise, sometimes because the film has a concept too shallow to sustain more than three minutes, and sometimes...

Sci-fi shows often build passionate fanbases but are frequently canceled too soon, despite their potential to create expansive worlds and storylines. Space: Above and Beyond, Firefly, Sense8, Terra Nova, Dollhouse, Dirk Gently, Almost Human, Caprica, Journeyman, and The 4400 are all examples of sci-fi shows that were canceled before they could fully explore their narratives and resolve their storylines. These canceled shows had intriguing concepts, talented casts, and loyal fans, but ultimately succumbed to the high production costs and low viewing figures that often plague sci-fi television.
Sci-fi TV shows often build incredibly dedicated fanbases, but seem to frequently get canceled too soon. It makes sense considering sci-fi is frequently a genre that inherently costs more to make. Often depicting elaborate future worlds and technologies, sci-fi shows have higher demands than a standard drama or sitcom.

It has all the makings of a new and disturbing trend in television — companies taking fully produced, unaired series and moving them off their books — but insiders are hesitant to say whether cancellations like what we saw today at Showtime, as well as what has happened at Warner Bros. Discovery, AMC, Starz, Netflix and Peacock over the last few months, is becoming the new normal.
Consider it more of a one-time “right-sizing,” they say.
“I don’t think those companies are going to want to make a practice of this on an ongoing basis,” a partner at a talent agency tells Deadline. “They’ve done it and they weren’t burned to the ground by the town, but the reaction was really, really strong. So barring any further kind of financial apocalypse or whatever, I think they’re going to want to reassure people this is a one-of-a-kind thing is...

He’s a bit of a legend in the UK, not as well known in the US, and now he’s starring in Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. But who is Paddy Considine? Well, he’s a British actor and director who grew up in Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire (that’s in the West Midlands for our American friends – you’re welcome!). He’s won two BAFTA awards both as director for his short film Dog Altogether and for his feature debut Tyrannosaur which starred Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan and was one of the first movies to really introduce Colman as a heavy weight actress. In House of the Dragon Considine plays Viserys I Targaryen, the well-meaning but ineffectual leader of the Targaryen dynasty, and King of the Seven Kingdoms. Loving his performance and want to see more? Here are his best roles.

Charles Officer’s flashy feature reflects on violence handed down the generations but has too much faith in fatigued beats from the gangster-film locker
Canadian-Jamaican director Charles Officer’s second feature looks flashy, sounds cool and – Ghost Dog-style – likes to fling out shurikens of eastern philosophy every which way. But this tale of freelance underworld fixer Akilla Brown, played with careworn wisdom by Saul Williams, doesn’t live up to its sharp tailoring and has too much faith in fatigued beats from the gangster-film locker.
Journeyman Akilla is about to retire from the illegal cannabis-distribution business in Toronto, rendered redundant by legalisation. But he finds himself on the end of a double-barrel shotgun when a depot belonging to “the Greek”, his boss, is raided by rival hoodlums. Thanks to his sang-froid, the heist runs off the rails, and Akilla steps in to stop his crew from torturing young soldier Sheppard (Thamela Mpumlwana) who,...

Many have ascended the Seven Kingdoms’ Iron Throne, the most prized seat of George R.R. Martin’s blockbuster A Song of Ice and Fire saga. But it is a station built on daggers, and few have lasted long; as the events of HBO’s Game of Thrones detailed.
The difference for Paddy Considine’s King Viserys is that the expiry date is built right in. He ascends the throne in the first episode of the prequel series House of the Dragon, which starts on HBO Sunday night. But given that the events of the show take place 200 years before those of Thrones, and that Thrones kicks off with Viserys’s Targaryen dynasty in shreds, we’re aware from the outset that things are likely to go horribly wrong.
Still, Game of Thrones assured us early on that nothing lasts forever, and yet it managed eight seasons of intrigue and dragons.

Using only the ledger kept by his predecessor, Gabriel travels from town-to-town, an avenging angel, fixing shattered lives.
Juan Carlos Coto is attached to write and executive produce the series. Maridueña executive produces along with Will Packer of Will Packer Media and Brandon Guzmán of Valor Entertainment Group. Alvie Hurtado and Peggy Cheng of Will Packer Media are overseeing the project for the company.
Maridueña is best known for starring in the Emmy-nominated Netflix series “Cobra Kai,” the continuation of the original “Karate Kid” film franchise.

If we can't get Tom Cruise to star in a TV show, this could be the next best thing. Fox is developing a small-screen update of Minority Report, the 2002 movie from Steven Spielberg that starred Cruise as a future cop who - with the help of soothsayers, or Precogs - prevented murders before they were committed. The new project, from Max Borenstein and the Emmy-winning writer and producer Kevin Falls (Journeyman, The West Wing), is a sequel that is set 10 years later. A live-action adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's comic book series "Powers" is on the way as an hour-long PlayStation original drama series. The Wall Street Journal broke the news, reporting that Sony Pictures Television is developing the property. "Powers," written by Bendis and drawn by Oeming, follows two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, as they investigate superhero-related homicides. The series launched in 2004 through Image Comics and is now published by Marvel's Icon imprint. A television version of "Powers" was in the works some years back with "Journeyman" creator Kevin Falls drafting a never-released pilot that starred Lucy Punch and Jason Patric as Detectives Pilgrim and Walker.

You’ve got to love a show that gets stronger over time… or at least gets higher ratings, and since that’s exactly the case with Syfy‘s Haven, fans can relax for quite a while. The network has ordered 26 new episodes, and they will air as a split fifth season. 13 will air in the fall, and the remaining 13 will air sometime in 2015.
According to the announcement, it isn’t just ratings that are high on the network’s radar. Up on the social media chatter front, the show is clearly proving itself as one with loyal, and vocal, fans, and the network is paying attention to that.

Haven Season 4 is coming to wrap itself around us in all its creepy mysterious gorgeous Nova Scotia-posing-as-New England goodness, and I am So Ready. They’ve even made it easy to remember the premiere date: Friday the 13th of next month.
I’m thrilled that Colin Ferguson (Eureka) is joining as a recurring guest star, and now we have news of two others. I hope they all fare better than last year’s recurring guest star. You know, the psychologist? Yowie.
With so many shows, new characters can be disruptive, but the casting in this series has always been impeccable, and seamless with the writing and the collective excellence of the show. And no matter how hard they try, and sometimes they do try, guest stars seem to never be able to permanently break up my favorite love/buddy triangle of Audrey, Nathan, and Duke.

Excellent, some Haven news! Production has begun for Season 4 of this absolutely terrific show, up in gorgeous Halifax. Everyone I’ve talked with who’s involved in the show’s production talks about the big part the location plays in the series, and I agree. We also have news that the star of another Syfy show that featured an “interesting” town will be joining the Haven community:
Yes Colin Ferguson, Eureka‘s Sheriff Jack Carter, will be showing up in our favorite creepy town. Here are the details, along with a head’s up about where we’ll be when the show returns:

When Haven premieres this October, Colin Ferguson (Eureka) returns to Syfy playing William, a handsome mysterious stranger, whose secret agenda leads him to Audrey (Emily Rose).
Season 4 of Haven picks up six months after the devastating events of the Season 3 cliffhanger in which the town was pummeled by a violent meteor storm. Audrey and Duke (Eric Balfour) vanished into thin air leaving an injured Nathan (Lucas Bryant) marooned in Haven.
During its third season, Haven averaged 2.3 million total viewers, 1.1 million Adults 25-54 and 901,000 Adults 18-49. It was the #1 cable drama during its Friday night at 10 Pm timeslot (based on Live + 7 data) in Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54 and total viewers.

Haven airs on Syfy in the Us and Showcase in Canada.
The supernatural drama series Haven has been renewed for a 13-episode fourth season to air in 2013, Showcase has announced.
Haven, is loosely based on the novella The Colorado Kid by Stephen King. The show is set in the titular seaside town which is supposed to be on the coast of Maine, although the series is filmed in Nova Scotia, Canada. Despite its picture postcard appearance, Haven has a turbulent history as a result of the so-called ‘troubles’ that afflict the local residents.
Front and center in events in Haven is Audrey Parker (Emily Rose). In the series premiere Parker comes to the town as an FBI agent. However, after befriending local cop Nathan Wournos (Lucas Bryant) and the roguish Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour) she joins the Haven Pd and investigates the town’s many secrets. Some of these have...

Those of us who know and love the very excellent Haven know that the town is a wee bit creepy. Previously it’s been the townspeople who have been slightly (or more than slightly) scary, but tonight we learn that even the buildings can have issues – or at least one special building can. In fact, the building used for the location shoot has a history of its own.

It wasn’t an incident-free shoot, by the way. It was creepy.” How cool is that?...

This new season of Haven is absolutely terrific; familiar yet fresh, just the way we like our favorite shows. We would absolutely hang out with – heck, we would date, if we were available and they were willing – any of the main characters of this show. Charming, intelligent, witty, perceptive, loyal, supportive, and each one of them an absolute biscuit. Yes, even the Teagues. There is just something about this town…
And tonight we meet two more residents: psychiatrist Dr. Claire Callahan (Bree Williamson), and Jordan McKee (Kate Kelton) whom you’ve seen on the #EscapeToHaven videos. Some of the best news coming out of Syfy lately is the fact that Haven is returning for its third season on September 21, less than a month away. There is an atmosphere on the show, set in a small seaside town in Maine (no surprise, as it’s based on a novella by Stephen King), that combines with the exceptional cast chemistry and fantastically twisty plots to make it easily my favorite show on Syfy. You could say it has – sorry – an Edge.
Because it does. WWE superstar Edge (Adam Copeland) joined the show for a few guest appearances last season as Dwight, a “cleaner” of the aftermath of Troubled incidents, and now we hear from Syfy that he’ll be back for Season 3. It would be easy to suspect that this is stunt casting, but honestly, he’s a natural. The show has consistently excellent writing, but the actors still need to bring it,...

The mystery of Haven deepens week by week for Audrey Parker (Emily Rose).
The cast and crew of Showcase’s supernatural mystery series Haven are heading back to the coast of Nova Scotia for April 18, which has been announced as the official start date for production on Season 3 of the show
Loosely based on the novella The Colorado Kid by Stephen King, Haven follows former FBI agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose). Parker becomes a cop in the small coastal town of Haven, Maine, and soon discovers the town’s many secrets, which hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of her past.
As supernatural series go, Haven is generally low key, but it’s appealing characters, intriguing mysteries and beautiful setting have helped to make it a deserved hit in this writer’s opinion.
The 13-episode third season of the show, which airs on Syfy in the U.S., will...

Terra Nova: Where Do I Know Them From?
by Kelly Kelemen for TV.com
Terra Nova just roared onto Fox's Monday lineup, backed by a hefty 9 figure budget from one Steven Spielberg, as the show hopes to garner a loyal fan base of thrill seekers and dino-enthusiasts and become the next Lost. But what the show doesn't have is that big name star that you know from countless other outlets such as Zooey Deschanel, Jane Lynch, Simon Cowell, Omar Epps, etc. So if you're busy putting your finger on actor's faces during the broadcast, desperately trying to place where they're from, here's a cheat sheet that might jog your memory.
Jason O’Mara (as Jim Shannon)
The show’s main character and Irish lad is no stranger to the little screen, if we can call it that anymore.

There is much for viewers of TNT’s Falling Skies to look forward to. For one, the alien-invasion series has been picked up for a second season, just four weeks into its freshman run. Also, looking to the immediate future, this Sunday’s episode takes us inside the head of Anne Glass, the stalwart but not-entirely-indestructible pediatrician tasked with human medical matters as well as taking scientific stock of the “skitter” being help captive by the 2nd Massachusetts. (Along the way, we’ll also learn something new about the ETs, including what exactly they do with the harnessed kids at bedtime!

Moon Bloodgood has several science-fiction credits on her resumé, notably "Terminator Salvation" and the TV series "Journeyman" and "Day Break." But when the script for "Falling Skies" came to her, she was initially cool to the idea.
"At first I said no -- or no thank you -- just because I wasn't sure I wanted to do science fiction. I wanted to do something different," Bloodgood tells Zap2it. "Then I re-read it, and I was like, Gosh, this is Steven Spielberg. ... And sometimes when you read a script the second time, you start to see things you didn't see before."
What she saw on that second read, and what led her to take the role in TNT's new series, which premieres Sunday (June 19), was the fact that her role of Anne Glass was more "cerebral" than some parts she's played in the past. The series, executive produced by Spielberg...

TNT’s new dramedy Franklin & Bash got off to a good start Wednesday, averaging 2.7 million viewers, according to early results. The new series from the Emmy-winning Kevin Falls (Journeyman) and Bill Chais also scored well in the key adult demos, including 1.1 million adults ages 18-49 and 1.2 million adults 25-54. The show stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer.
Unfortunately, not everyone stuck around to watch the return of the critically-beloved Men of a Certain Age, the Ray Romano starrer that first premiered in December 2009. It averaged 1.8 million viewers and 591,000 adults 18-49. Among adults 25-54, it lured 825,000. TNT says the show will...

TNT's upcoming series Franklin & Bash (Premiere - Wednesday June 1st at 9 p.m. Et/Pt) is a prime example of why most of today's best television is on cable. Not because it's the next best show ever, it's not, but because it can take full advantage of the very different dynamic that exists between cable networks and viewers. If this show were about to set sail on one of the major networks, my advice (whether I like the show, or not) would probably be that your time is better spent looking for something else. Why? Mainly because, despite the fact that I rather like the show, it wouldn't have much chance to survive.
Viewers know how the game is played, and they would see promos for this on network television, and figure that since it isn't the biggest, baddest thing to come along, it probably won't get more than two or three episodes,...
