The 1920 play "R.U.R." by Karel Capek introduced the word "robot" to the English language and science fiction as a whole. It is derived from the Czech word "robota," which means "forced labour." Capek attributed the invention of the word to his elder brother Josef Capek, who died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in April 1945.
The film takes place from 1980 to 1990.
