Aaron Kaufman, who directed the documentary Superpower about the war in Ukraine alongside Sean Penn and was a longtime producing partner of Robert Rodriguez, has died. He was 51.
Kaufman died Thursday in Las Vegas, Verdi Productions President Chad Verdi told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. Reports indicated that Kaufman died of an apparent heart attack.
“It’s a very sad time for everyone who loved Aaron,” Verdi wrote in an email to THR. “Aaron passed away Thursday night. He and I spoke by phone about 20 minutes prior to 911 being called. He was in great spirits and was headed to dinner. Life is short and family and friends are everything. I miss him a lot already.”

Aaron Kaufman, a writer, director and producer whose credits include “Superpower” and “Machete Kills,” died on Thursday evening in Las Vegas after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 51.
Kaufman’s death was confirmed by Chad Verdi, the film financier behind “The Irishman” as well as several of Kaufman’s past and upcoming projects.
The Long Island native, who was Robert Rodriguez’s longtime producing partner, is best known for co-directing with Sean Penn the Emmy-nominated documentary “Superpower,” which traced the political rise of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While Penn became the face of the 2023 documentary, it was Kaufman who had been on the ground in Ukraine in February 2022 when the ongoing war with Russia broke out. Danny Trejo discusses the likelihood of him returning for Machete 3. Machete is a 2010 movie co-directed by Ethan Maniquis and Robert Rodriguez, which features Trejo as the titular Machete who launches revenge against his former boss after being betrayed. In addition to Trejo, Machete features a leading cast including Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Steven Seagal, and Jeff Fahey. The 2010 film was followed up by a sequel three years later, titled Machete Kills.
In an interview with Moviefone, Trejo discusses whether he would return for Machete 3. First, Trejo was asked about the status of Machete 3, which is reportedly going to be called Machete Kills Again...in Space. In Seven Cemeteries, a recent parolee (Danny Trejo) gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman's ranch from a ruthless drug lord.
The movie also stars Sal Lopez, Samantha Ashley, Efren Ramirez, Vincent M. Ward, Lew Temple, Richard Esteras, and Maria Canals-Barrera, and is every bit as delightfully bonkers as it sounds.

Earlier this week, we had the good fortune to sit down with Danny to discuss his role as Bravo in this action-packed supernatural romp from filmmaker John Gulager.

Slasher villains in horror movies date back to 1960, although the slasher horror genre didn't exist under that name until the 1970s. The earliest movie that many consider to be the grandfather of slasher movies was the Alfred Hitchcock horror movie Psycho, but it wasn't until the 70s that movies like Black Christmas and Halloween created the genre. One of the key elements to a successful entry into the genre is having a truly great slasher villain.
Slasher villains are the ones who mercilessly hunt the victims of the story, generating scares and collecting high body counts. As with the slasher genre itself, these villains can be seen in a variety of different ways. There are the classic masked killers, like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers. There are the killers whose identities are left a mystery until the end. There are even some slasher villains who can also be considered horror movie monsters.

A while back, a terrific book about the golden age of action stars called “The Last Action Heroes” came out (buy it here). Written by Nick De Semlyen, the book takes a very affectionate look at all of the icons we grew up with in the 80s and 90s, with one notable exception. Steven Seagal does not come off well in the book – at all. One of the wildest stories from the book recounts a time when Seagal grew outraged over the fact that a meeting room he wanted was being occupied by the legendary Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
The two actors, who would have been in their late sixties then, were participating in a read-through for their hit comedy Grumpy Old Men. According to the book, the vibe in the room was light, with the two old pros cracking up their director, Daniel Petrie and assembled guests. One of them was William Osborne,...

Patrick Lussier's 2011 film "Drive Angry" might belong to a genre hereby designated "neo-grindhouse." There was a wave of films in the late 2000s and early 2010s that sought to evoke the style or the content of a very specific type of exploitation movie that was popular in the 1970s. In addition to the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 2007 twofer "Grindhouse" and its spinoffs, films like "Redline," "The Man with the Iron Fists," "Turbo Kid," "Kung Fury," "Hatchet," "Torque," "Deathgasm," "House of the Devil," and "The Love Witch" popped up on the regular.
"Drive Angry" gleefully embraced its goofy, action/horror premise with aplomb. A dead race car driver named (sigh) John Milton (Nicolas Cage) escapes the clutches of Hell having stolen Satan's persona gun, a device called the Godkiller. On his tail is Satan's Accountant (William Fichtner), assigned with nabbing John and dragging him back to Hell. John,...

Rob Zombie has said that for every one film project of his that moves forward, there are five potential projects that fall by the wayside. We haven’t heard of quite that many unmade Rob Zombie movies, but we have heard of several over the years that never got off the ground… and unfortunately, most of them sounded pretty interesting. A little over a year ago, Zombie had said he didn’t know what his next movie is going to be, but he did know what it’s not going to be: he won’t be continuing his Firefly franchise, and he doesn’t want to make a sequel to The Munsters (which was poorly received). So while he figures out his next cinematic move, we we have put together a list of Rob Zombie Movies We Want To See!

Spinoff movies have been a popular trend in Hollywood for years, allowing filmmakers to explore new stories and characters within established universes. "Deadpool" is a great example of a spinoff that took a character from a previous film and gave them their own standalone story. "Hobbs & Shaw" is another successful spinoff that took characters from the "Fast and the Furious" franchise and gave them their own adventure.
Movie franchises are growing more popular than ever, and spinoffs are under scrutiny, but some spinoff movies are good or even better than earlier films. While plenty still falls short of audience expectations, this makes it an even more welcome surprise when these films are better than viewers or critics anticipated. It helps when there are strong characters and well-known IPs to draw from in the development of spinoffs. Machete star Danny Trejo was enjoying the Fourth of July celebrations in California on Thursday until things took a turn after his vintage car was pelted with water balloons. The From Dusk till Dawn actor was attending the Independence Day parade in Sunland-Tujunga, California, when a fellow partygoer attacked Trejo’s vintage convertible with a water balloon. This upset Trejo, who got out of his car to confront the assailant, resulting in a street scuffle. As reported by TMZ, Trejo and his friends exited the vehicle but apparently confronted the wrong people. This led to lots of pushing and shoving, with bystanders holding Trejo back as he yelled at the culprits. One bystander captured part of the confrontation on video and later shared it on social media (which you can watch below). “He got hit with a water ballooning his #vinyage car, came down and a brawl broke out. Older Jessica Alba action movies outshine Trigger Warning on Netflix, as critics find it lacking in acting, action, story, and visual style. Machete, a fun and wild action movie, is a better choice over the serious and predictable Trigger Warning for Jessica Alba fans. Trigger Warning fails to impress with its familiar plot, lack of surprises, and clichs, leading to a low Rotten Tomatoes rating for Jessica Alba.
Although Trigger Warning was recently released on Netflix, its Rotten Tomatoes rating indicates that viewers might be better off seeking out an older Jessica Alba action movie. Jessica Alba has enjoyed her fair share of box office success, but the star has a mixed history when it comes to the critical reception of her movies. For every successful hit like Sin City or The Killer Inside Me, Alba has a handful of critical disappointments, like Into the Blue and The Love Guru.

For a good part of the last decade, actor Jessica Alba has tried to mold herself as an action star, to varying results. Her latest attempt, in Indonesian director Mouly Surya’s Hollywood debut, Trigger Warning, streaming on Netflix, seems to be a step in the right direction. Clearly inspired by action classics like Rambo and Machete, Trigger Warning is a one-woman army show, with Jessica Alba carrying the movie from the very first scene to the last. However, well-crafted action set pieces against the scenic backdrop of western America cannot hide the glaringly bland plotline, poorly written side characters, and very generic treatment of the movie as a whole. Jessica Alba’s return to mainstream action would have benefited from a more violent treatment of the narrative, which is teased throughout the movie, only to turn out disappointingly tame in the end. Another aspect that will feel a bit...

Sequels aren't always advertised, but can be hidden in films with subtle connections to previous entries. Some movies share a cinematic universe, with characters or themes linking them together, despite differing genres. Surprising reveals of hidden sequels or prequels, like in the Kingsman or Fast & Furious franchises, can create buzz.
Plenty of movies have sequels, but it's a rare treat that a film will only identify itself as such deep into its runtime, revealing a hidden sequel. The best sequels take advantage of the set-up of an entire previous film, and even if they typically fall short of the original, they're one of the most guaranteed ways to find success at the box office. But not every movie producer takes advantage of this, instead preferring to stealthily release subsequent films that aren't advertised as sequels at all.
These hidden follow-up films can reveal their hand in a variety of ways.

Art the Clown is making his return to theaters nationwide with Terrifier 3 on October 11, 2024, and Bloody Disgusting can confirm that a horror legend has joined the slasher sequel.
Makeup effects master Tom Savini will be making an appearance in director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, which Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting are bringing to the big screen!
Tom Savini’s work has long been a huge source of inspiration for Leone, whose Terrifier movies are of course loaded with the kind of practical effects-driven brutality that Savini helped pioneer. From the very first arrival of Jason Voorhees on screen in the original Friday the 13th to the splatter effects in horror classics including Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, Savini is one of the all-time great masters in the world of special makeup effects, elevating the art of horror movie gore and paving the way for all...

Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for Trigger Warning, an upcoming action thriller that stars Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four; Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer; Sin City) in the lead role as a skilled Special Forces commando who takes ownership of her father's bar after he suddenly dies, and soon finds herself at odds with a violent gang running rampant in her hometown.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Alba expressed her excitement and inspiration for making this film. "I loved Die Hard. I loved Star Wars. I loved Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, all these movies I grew up with, but I always felt like I wanted to see the women kicking ass instead of always being saved."

Fallout season 2 may feature a cameo from Danny Trejo's Raul, as New Vegas is a possible setting for the characters to explore. The physical differences between Raul and Trejo can be overcome through the Ghoulification process, allowing for an easy transition. The show has leeway in determining Raul's fate post-New Vegas, potentially setting up a surprising cameo for Danny Trejo in Fallout season 2.
The setup for Fallout season 2 paves the way for the perfect cameo from Danny Trejo when Prime Video's series returns. Though official details on the plot haven't been provided, Fallout season 1's ending offers a few clues on what to expect from Lucy, Maximus and The Ghoul's next adventure in Fallout's world. Netflix shares new images from Trigger Warning, teasing Alba in a grittier role.

Turns out, Danny Trejo actually might be wielding a machete soon, as the eponymous franchise is still on track to be a trilogy. During a recent discussion with Rob Zombie for Interview magazine, the almost-80-year-old actor Trejo incorrectly stated that “Machete” and “Machete Kills” director Robert Rodriguez “sold part” of the franchise, and therefore it’s unlikely another will be made.
“God, I guess Robert [Rodriguez] screwed up and sold part of ‘Machete,'” Trejo said, “to Russians or something. Everyone always asks, ‘When are you doing “Machete Kills in Space?”‘” Director Zombie added that he’d love to see “Machete Kills in Space,” saying, “I thought for sure it was going to happen. It’s so ridiculous.”
However, Rodriguez exclusively told IndieWire that Trejo’s comments are thankfully “incorrect” and a third “Machete” film may still slice up cinemas soon.
“I retain all the rights,” Rodriguez told IndieWire in an email.

Eli Roth's 2023 slasher film "Thanksgiving" famously started its life back in 2007 in the form of a fake trailer sandwiched in between Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof," two movies released as a single mega-feature called "Grindhouse." The goal of "Grindhouse" was to recreate the experience of seeing a cheap exploitation double-feature in a run-down New York theater in the early 1980s, complete with film scratches, missing reels, and several previews for upcoming ultra-salacious genre movies. The trailers were all fake at the time, but since 2007, the trailers for "Machete," "Hobo with a Shotgun," and "Thanksgiving" have been made into real movies.
Roth, as the director's fans know, is a voracious cineaste, and has likely spent more time watching movies than most people. He also wears his influences on his sleeve; in the credits for Roth's 2013 cannibal film "The Green Inferno," he includes a list...

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.
But to the actors who played them in the original? Oscar nominations, pop careers, Hallmark Christmas movies, prestige streaming dramas, LGBT+ firsts, and much more.

What better time to celebrate "Thanksgiving" than midwinter? Eli Roth's latest slasher is officially due out on digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray before the month of January is through, which is good news for horror fans trapped in the doldrums of what is traditionally the worst month for the genre. If you haven't already seen the colonial holiday kill-fest, which was built around a fake movie trailer Roth made for the film "Grindhouse" way back in 2007, you can check it out on premium video on demand now.
You can also watch it for a cheaper price digitally on January 16, 2024, or grab a DVD or Blu-ray version on January 30 -– just make sure to watch out for a mob of shoppers, a la the film's Black Friday-set opening scene. Eli Roth’s gory and twisted slasher Thanksgiving is yours to own on DVD and Blu-Ray next month. More details here:
Thanksgiving was one of the bigger surprises of 2023, especially after an uneven year of horror films. Released relatively late in the year, Thanksgiving was met with a lot of positive buzz, including from us.
We wrote in our review that “Thanksgiving is probably the best no-budget, straight-to-streaming, goofy horror flick you’ve ever seen – except it’s distributed by a major studio.”
Thanksgiving follows a town terrorised by a serial killer in a pilgrim costume. Patrick Dempsey, Nell Verlaque, Addison Rae, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Milo Manheim and Rick Hoffman star.
Well, if you missed Roth’s gloriously gory film in the cinemas or you’re just a big fan of physical media, you can buy the disc version of Thanksgiving very soon. The film is due to be released...

The fake trailers in Grindhouse were a creative decision that added to the immersion of the double-feature. Planet Terror and Death Proof are very different from each other, just like the fictional trailers. Some of the fake trailers from Grindhouse later became full-length feature movies.
Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's double-feature Planet Terror and Death Proof contained several fake Grindhouse trailers, teasing several fictional exploitation movies — although some later got made. The trailers for Grindhouse movies in Rodriguez's Planet Terror and Tarantino's Death Proof were an incredibly creative directorial decision, as the world of fake movies they gave viewers a glimpse into increased the immersion of the double-feature. Grindhouse was a full experience with two feature-length segments, advertisements, in-theater announcements, and fake trailers for upcoming films, all in the style of B-movies with filters that make the images look deteriorated and effects to make them look jumpy and old.

Jeff Fahey expresses interest in returning for Alita: Battle Angel 2, hoping to work with director Robert Rodriguez again. Fahey's character, McTeague, could expand on the bounty hunter world and explore the dynamic with Koyomi in the potential sequel. Fahey's return could pay tribute to Rodriguez's long-time fans and potentially open the door for other past collaborators to appear in the sequel.
With the creative team behind the original movie confirming talks are still ongoing, Jeff Fahey has an optimistic update for Alita: Battle Angel 2. Fahey starred in the 2019 adaptation of the manga of the same name as McTeague, a Hunter-Warrior who appears in a single scene in which he aids Rosa Salazar's eponymous heroine against the criminal cyborg Grewishka. What’s Good: The movie presents a number of very gruesome and often funny murder scenes that will leave you laughing out loud.
What’s Bad: The characters are paper-thin, and the villain’s motivations are just as dumb.
Loo Break: The second act is too long for what it offers, so you can take a break before the insanity of the third act ensues.

"Fantastic Four," created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, was more or less a family sitcom except the three family members and their best friend all happened to have superpowers. It was light and comedic, while also featuring bloviating, demonstrative supervillains who shouted regularly about the glories of world domination. It was a comic book series that declared itself to be The World's Greatest Comics Magazine!
Story's feature film adaptations were not very well received when they were released. 2005's "Fantastic Four" only bears a 28% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while its sequel, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," only has a 38% approval rating. Moreso, Marvel Comics fans were harsh to Story's movies, hating their cartoony tone and corny scripts. It's worth acknowledging, however, that Story's...

Making a movie adaptation of Edgar Wright's Grindhouse trailer, Don't, would ruin its central gag and strip it of its unique charm. The trailer works better without a narrative, allowing for a jumble of images, ghosts, zombies, and witches, while poking fun at a specific marketing technique. Wright and the cast members agree Don't is best left as a trailer, making it the "film" it was destined to be.
Making Edgar Wright's classic trailer into a movie wouldn't work, despite another Grindhouse preview becoming a box-office hit. Best buddies Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teamed up during the late 2000s to make Grindhouse, a double feature celebration of the kinds of exploitation films they grew up on. Tarantino directed unique slasher Death Proof while Rodrigues helmed zombie movie Planet Terror. Despite featuring two name directors and an all-star cast Grindhouse was a total box-office bomb.
A few factors have been cited for this,...

The episode of Revisited covering Grindhouse was Written by Cody Hamman, Edited and Narrated by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Quentin Tarantino. Robert Rodriguez. Rob Zombie. Edgar Wright. Eli Roth. Back in 2007, these five filmmakers joined forces, all contributing to the same project. A film that brings us sights like deformed, decomposing zombies. Vehicular homicide. Limbs replaced with weaponry. Danny Trejo wiping out bad guys. A holiday slasher. Supernatural beings dripping white goo. And even some Nazi werewolves. It was a fun experiment… and a box office bomb. The film is called Grindhouse (watch it Here) – and we think it’s time for it to be Revisited.
In the ‘90s, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez decided to collaborate on From Dusk Till Dawn, with Rodriguez directing from a screenplay by Tarantino. The result was one of the most entertaining vampire movies ever made.

Grindhouse's failure at the box office limited the opportunities for spinoff movies from the fake trailers, but the success of Eli Roth's Thanksgiving could revive interest in them. Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun were two trailers from Grindhouse that received movies, while Don't and Werewolf Women of the SS have yet to be made into films. While Rob Zombie expressed interest in making Werewolf Women of the SS into a movie, Edgar Wright may not be as inclined to revisit Don't, as it has become a cult oddity and his film Last Night in Soho explores similar themes.
With the release of Eli Roth's Thanksgiving, there are only two fake trailers from Grindhouse left, but will these also become movies? Grindhouse was the brainchild of best pals Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, who wanted to make a tribute to the sleazy double-bill movie features they grew up with.

Franchise entries “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate) and “Trolls Band Together” (Universal) opened to respectable levels, if below their precedents, to take #1 and #2 in theaters this weekend. However, “The Marvels” (Disney) set another record: After an McU-worst opening the film outdid itself with an estimated 78 percent drop. At $10.2 million, it’s neck-and-neck with the opening of Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving;” on Monday, we’ll know which one landed at #4.
Not every Disney MCU film is #1 in its second weekend — but to place third or lower is without precedent. The $220 million production stands at $65 million domestic, with no chance of reaching $100 million; worldwide, it will be lucky to gross $200 million.
Theaters are fortunate that three new films dared to open the week after an MCU release (aided by the timing of Thanksgiving just ahead). The range of titles totaled about $115 million for the weekend, up 15 percent from last year.
