Screen Media has nabbed North American distribution rights to “Virtually Heroes,” an action comedy that was produced by Roger Corman nearly a decade ago but was left without a home.
The release of the film has been a long time coming. “Virtually Heroes” was an official selection of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, but despite Corman’s legendary status as the Picasso of B movies, it never landed distribution. The film was directed and produced by Gj Echternkamp (“Frank and Cindy”) and stars Robert Baker (“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”), Brent Chase (“Shameless”), Katie Savoy (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Mark Hamill of “Star Wars” fame.
It centers on two self-aware characters in a “Call of Duty”-inspired video game as they battle endless enemies and their own existential crises. With the help of Hamill’s Yoda-like monk, they attempt to win the game and get the girl.

This has got to be one of the more interesting MPAA ratings bulletins in a while and not because of the recognizable names, but more for the abundance of sequels I had never heard of. The only one I've heard of (and have actually seen and entirely disliked) is Rec 4: Apocalypse, but beyond that we have Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse, Hayride 2 (a sequel to a movie about a serial killer haunting a family hayride) and did you know they made a sequel to The Man With The Iron Fists and yes, RZA is back and starring and also wrote the screenplay and it may or may not be called The Man with the Iron Fists: Sting of the Scorpion. The first one made just over $19 million worldwide on a $15 million budget, my guess is he got about $5 million to make this one... max. As for the films we've...

Best known for helming the feature documentary "Frank and Cindy," which was featured on the "This American Life" series on Showtime, G. J. Echternkamp makes his narrative debut with the high-concept indie "Virtually Heroes," premiering in the Midnight Madness section. Produced by the legendary Roger Corman, "Virtually Heroes" centers on a video game character, Sgt. Brooks, who becomes increasingly frustrated by the messed up logic of his universe. To find answers to his many questions, he seeks out a straight-talking monk who resides within his virtual world. What It's About: "It’s about two American soldiers fighting in Vietnam who are actually characters in a bad video game. It’s very frustrating for them." What It's Really About: "Big existential stuff. Life. Death. Rebirth. Call of Duty. Resident Evil. Exploding Barrels. Cheap-Ass Bosses. Buddhism. Cobra Kai. Roger Corman. Star Wars....

Rene Russo, who stars as Thor’s immortal mother in this summer’s comic-book tentpole, will next play the real-life groupie who married the young rock star of her dreams and then watched him burn-out in the indie, Frank and Cindy. Based on the 2007 documentary of the same name about Frank Garcia — bassist for the early 1980′s one-hit wonder Oxo, and his older wife, Cindy Brown – Frank and Cindy will shoot this summer, according to John Pierce, who will produce with actor Scoot McNairy (Monsters). Brown’s son, G.J. Echternkamp, who made the award-winning doc, will also direct the feature film.
