The series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino makes an appearance near the end of the film: he appears in a spacesuit on the Solo Ship's bridge with storyboard illustrations in his hands (fittingly, Tomino himself is killed in the film).
This is a spin-off of Space Runaway Ideon (1980), which was meant to be 43 episodes long but got canceled after 39 were aired. This film is composed of the last episode aired (#39) and the remaining four episodes (#40-43).
The opening sequence of the film features the Ideon chopping a planet in half with its blades. This was taken from Space Runaway Ideon (1980)'s 38th episode, "The Space Runaway."
