The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is based on a series of four novels by American author Ann Brashares. They include: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2001), The Second Summer of the Sisterhood (2003), Girls in Pants (2005), and Forever in Blue (2007). The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is based on the last novel with flashbacks to the first three.
Yes. Alexis Bledel is again playing Lena Kaligaris, Amber Tamblyn is Tabitha "Tibby" Tomko-Rollins, America Ferrera is Carmen Lowell, and Blake Lively is Bridget Vreeland. Kostas (Michael Rady) is back, too.
Viewers who have seen both movies recommend that you watch the first movie before watching the second, because the first movie contains a lot of background information about the characters and why they act the way they do, especially Bridget. Lena's relationship with Kostas will make a lot more sense if you've seen the first movie. Also, the first movie describes how the girls came by the pants and why they keep mailing them to each other.
For one thing, they fit each girl perfectly, no matter how tall, short, fat, or thin she might be. Secondly, they appear to be magical in some way such that good things seem to happen to each girl when it is her turn to wear them.
Lena's grandfather Papou. In the first movie, Papou is the one who gave permission for Lena to pursue her relationship with Kostas, even though he came from a rival family.
The first movie, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants ended near the end of summer when the four girls all turned 17. At the start of TSotTP2, Carmen says that the pants kept them together "that summer and the two that followed", so TSotTP2 must be taking place three years later, just before the girls are about to turn 20.
The four girls have graduated from high school and moved on to college. Carmen's mom has remarried and gotten pregnant, and Carmen is now attending Yale University and working as a stage hand. Tibby enrolled at NYU and continues to make movies. Bridget is playing on the soccer team at Brown University. Lena, having attended Papou's funeral in Greece and found that Kostas is married, is now on scholarship at Rhode Island School of Design.
They had a long distance relationship, Kostas being in Greece and Lena in the US. They wrote letters to each other for a while, but Lena eventually broke up with him because she couldn't stand being away from him all the time. Not long afterwards, he began seeing Melia (Zacharoula Klimatsaki) and, when she announced that she was pregnant, Kostas married her.
Bridget is joining an archeological dig in Turkey. Lena is taking a summer class in figure drawing. Carmen is going with her theater troupe to the Village Theater Arts festival in Vermont. Tibby intends to stay in New York, go to summer school, work at a video store, and spend weekends with her boyfriend, Brian McBrian (Leonardo Nam).
Carmen got the part of Perdita in William's Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale. Perdita is a young woman of royal heritage who was abandoned by her father, King Leontes of Sicilia, because he believed that his wife Hermoine had been unfaithful to him. Prince Florizel falls in love with Perdita, but their marriage is disapproved of until Perdita's true parentage is finally revealed.
Tibby and Brian have a pregnancy scare when Brian finds that his condom has broken, but it turns out that Tibby isn't pregnant. Kostas marries a local Greek girl when she tells him that she's pregnant, but it turns out to be a lie, and the marriage is annulled. However, Carmen's mom really IS pregnant.
Carmen now has a baby brother, Ryan Christopher.
Lena's sister Effie () takes the pants with her to Greece without telling anyone. When the pants get wet, she hangs them out on a clothesline to dry, and they disappear. When Effie finally gets up the nerve to tell Lena, Lena flies to Greece to look for the pants. Carmen, Tibby, and Bridget use up some of Carmen's stepdad's frequent flier miles and follow her. They hang pictures of the lost pants all over the island, but get no response. Meanwhile, Carmen, Tibby, and Bridget have located Kostas, and they connive to lure Lena into running into him. Lena is polite but curt to him and wishes him a good life when he tells her that he's leaving tomorrow to attend graduate school in London. Later that day, the other three girls try to talk Lena into following her heart, but Lena breaks into tears and says that Kostas broke her heart and that she can't go through something like that again. That night, Lena can't sleep and keeps looking out the window at the full "sailor" moon. Suddenly she gets out of bed and, in her nightgown, runs down to the harbor where Kostas is sitting in his boat looking up at her window. They hug and kiss and agree to give it another chance. In the final scene, the four "sisters" sit on the rocks and watch the sun set, knowing that, even if they never see the pants again, the pants have brought the four of them back together and that may be the pants' final gift to them.
That's pretty much the assumption based on a scene where Lena finds Effie crying because "Brian's gone back to Tibby."
It's Only Life by Kate Voegele. There's also Seventeen Forever by Metro Station in some trailers.
