Time flies when you're having fun — and when you're trying to build a cinematic universe, too. Somehow, it's already been two years since DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the roadmap for their newly christened Dcu, announcing a wildly ambitious "Gods And Monsters" first phase comprising 10 projects. Now, as the first major movie from that slate, Gunn's own Superman, gets ready to take flight this July, Gunn and Safran have taken some time to give fans an update on their ever-evolving future plans — including Batman: The Brave And The Bold, a proposed live-action Teen Titans movie, Clayface, and much more besides.

At a gathering of the press last Friday, Gunn and Safran held court to talk films and TV shows that are in production, that need more time, and that are in the early stages of development. On the in production front, as of right...

There has been a lot of news from DC Studios in the past several days. Some of it has been great, some of it has been less than great, and some of it is somewhere in the No Man’s Land of interpretation and opinion that lies between the two. Some of it is a bit concerning when it comes to how this universe is coming together. Ideally, this universe will mimic what happens in the comics with standalone stories, crossovers, and huge Crisis style events. More than two years after revealing their initial plans for the TV series that will help populate their new DC Universe, DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran met with the press to offer some candid updates on what’s still moving forward, what has been slowed by a “bumpy road,” and what is brand-new to the mix.

Exclusive: Josh Lucas (Yellowstone) has signed on to star in Slay the Dreamer, a new film based on the life of Rev. James Lawson, the civil rights activist who was friend and advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., from director Joshua Michael Stern (Jobs).

Lucas stars as a washed-up lawyer who in 1976, at Lawson’s request, takes on the case of Grace Walden, the only eyewitness to the man who shot King who had been involuntarily held in a mental institution outside Memphis since the assassination eight years earlier. As the lawyer and his paralegal investigate Walden’s case, they uncover a conspiracy surrounding King’s assassination and risk their careers and lives to bring the truth to light.

Script is by by Donald Freed and Mark Lane, with a rewrite by Stern. Elizabeth Fowler and actor Harold Perrineau (MGM+’s From) are producing, with Joe Berlinger exec producing, and Foresight Media Services financing. Fowler and Perrineau are currently in negotiations with additional cast and are targeting a spring kickoff to production.

In a statement to Deadline, producer Fowler said, “”Slay The Dreamer” is a powerful true political thriller that will remind the world of Martin Luther King’s movement that was deliberately derailed by his assassination. We are hopeful that our film and the release of the classified files will finally reveal the true story behind the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.”

Recently starring in the series Palm Royale, Yellowstone and Long Slow Exhale, Lucas is also known for turns in films like Ford v Ferrari, The Lincoln Lawyer, A Beautiful Mind, American Psycho, J. Edgar, Glory Road, and Sweet Home Alabama, among many others. He is repped by WME, Liebman Entertainment, and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum.

Stern is best known as the creator, executive producer and director of Epix’s Nick Nolte comedy Graves, and for directing the films Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs, and Swing Vote, starring Kevin Costner. He is repped by Innovative Artists and attorney Darren Trattner.

"Zodiac Killer Project," a new movie from director Charlie Shackleton that debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, is one of the most unconventional true crime documentaries ever made. 3 of the biggest releases in the DC Extended Universe make 4 of the new DC Universe’s upcoming releases particularly promising. The Dceu was, sadly never consistently successful, critically or commercially, and while the franchise earned many loyal viewers, this lack of consistent success led to it being partially rebooted into the Dcu. The Dcu will be inspired by the Dceu in many ways, however, with some characters and storylines from the old franchise joining the new one.

Much of what carries over from the Dceu to the Dcu will be from DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn’s projects. Characters like Peacemaker and Amanda Waller will retain their Dceu actors in the new continuity and the Peacemaker series itself will receive a second season in the Dcu. Moreover, the Dcu appears to be taking cues from the Dceu’s successes in its own upcoming releases.

The new DC Universe has replaced the DC Extended Universe, yet one highly successful property is perplexingly absent from the Dcu’s release schedule. The Dceu was, sadly, troubled by divisive entries and inconsistent financial and critical success, with few properties that truly soared. After James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-CEOs of DC Studios, they decided to partially reboot the franchise, establishing the Dcu with a mostly clean slate and preparing audiences for new versions of classic characters like Superman and Batman, while others would retain their Dceu-era actors.

Although David Corenswet will replace Henry Cavill as Superman and a new Batman is set to debut in the upcoming The Brave and the Bold, several Dceu characters – mostly from Gunn’s own properties – will carry over into the new Dcu. Jason Momoa – who won over countless viewers as Aquaman in the Dceu – will portray Lobo in the new Dcu.

Very few network television shows end up leaving an impact as lasting as Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal. The series is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, with its romanticism of gore and dark themes bleeding into every single shot. Ever since it became clear that Gal Gadot would not be reprising her Wonder Woman role in the new Dcu, fans have been debating about who could be the best choice to take over as the iconic Amazonian hero.

Among the many fan-picks, Adria Arjona, Melissa Barrera and May Calamawy (Moon Knight) have emerged as three of the top choices, and concept artist Felipe Illa has now shared some of his latest designs depicting the actresses in different costumes as Princess Diana.

Of the three, Arjona seems to be the most popular fan-cast, and there was some speculation that she might actually be in contention for the role when she was recently spotted alongside Jason Momoa as he celebrated landing the Lobo part in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Andy Muschietti recently confirmed two things: The Brave and the Bold is not coming until after 2027 at least, and Robert Pattinson, at least for now, is not going to be Batman in the Dcu. While it’s disappointing that the Dcu will lack a Batman movie for at least the first three years of its existence, it’s at least good to know there is some kind of plan.

However, it would just be strange to build an interconnected DC movie universe and completely exclude Batman, easily DC’s most popular character and, arguably, the most popular comic book character of all time. Maybe, instead of giving the Dcu Batman his own movie to compete with The Batman Part II, Batman’s Dcu role could be to appear in other character’s movies before he gets his own similar to Hulk or Fury in the MCU.

For a time, it looked like Gal Gadot might make the leap from the Dceu to Dcu to continue playing Diana Prince. It never really made sense for James Gunn to only recast two-thirds of the Trinity, though, so Wonder Woman 3 being scrapped wasn't a huge shock.

In the season premiere of Creature Commandos, we learn that Circe is leading a group called the "Sons of Themyscira." The Amazon sorceress is using them to attack a small Eastern European country called Pokolistan, but believes herself to be Themyscira's rightful leader.

A news report reveals that she intends to lead the Sons there to conquer her former home, though it's clear from the report that people aren't 100% sure whether the island exists. In other words, even with Circe on the loose, both Amazons and Themyscira are considered a myth.

Tellingly, there's zero mention of Wonder Woman during this report, leaving fans to wonder whether Diana Prince is active in the Dcu.

In a new interview, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey said, "I think people are aware of Wonder Woman. So yeah, I think there's some belief that it exists, but I don't know how worldwide known it is.

As the Dcu’s first show, Creature Commandos, may be setting up multiple upcoming projects, including Wonder Woman’s yet-to-be-announced solo project and her prequel show, Paradise Lost. James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie will establish David Corenswet’s Superman as the face of the Dcu. Later down the line, Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold will introduce the Dcu’s Batman. Apart from John Stewart and Hal Jordan’s debut in Lanterns, other regular founding members of the Justice League like the Flash, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman are still lacking their own Dcu projects.

Although the first wave of projects in the Dcu’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter don’t include any Wonder Woman solo movie or show, they do include a Wonder Woman-adjacent prequel series, Paradise Lost, which will center around Themyscira a.k.a Paradise Island, and will probably have multiple Amazons as its main characters.

The two-episode premiere of Creature Commandos confirmed Themyscira exists in the new Dcu but also that no one is quite sure whether this island of Amazons is a real place or a myth.

While the Dcu doesn't have an upcoming Justice League movie on its slate, it's already building its roster before the inevitable project happens. In January 2023, James Gunn announced the upcoming slate for Chapter 1 — Gods and Monsters — of the Dcu. The announcement revealed several notable projects, including Superman and Lanterns, but it didn't include the Justice League. This starkly contrasts the Dceu, which was already setting up the superhero team by its second film, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It's also different from the MCU, which included The Avengers at the end of its first phase. The DC Universe's first chapter, "Gods and Monsters," includes a litany of TV shows and movies that will reintroduce DC's most iconic heroes in a rebooted cinematic franchise, with Paradise Lost delving into Wonder Woman's homeland. Wonder Woman is one of three "diamond characters" alongside Superman and Batman, who DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has stated will help spotlight lesser-known heroes in the Dcu's release slate. With Superman launching the Dcu's cinematic efforts in July 2025 and The Brave and the Bold slated to debut the Dcu's Batman later, Paradise Lost will sow the seeds of Wonder Woman's Dcu debut.

Wonder Woman was one of DC Studios' most valuable characters in the Dceu after her self-titled debut garnered critical acclaim and became the Dceu's third-highest-grossing movie. Despite this precedent, however, the Dcu may be holding off introducing Diana Prince until after Paradise Lost lays the groundwork for her history.

After news hit that there would be a spin-off series, titled Waller, details about the show and the cast have slowly been revealed. Amanda Waller is the head of the A.R.G.U.S. (Advanced Research Group United Support) that heads up the members of the Suicide Squad and generally commits minor acts of terrorism in order to avoid even larger catastrophes. In the Dceu timeline, Waller first appeared in the 2016 Suicide Squad and has since been in a number of Dceu properties, always as the same stone-faced, no-nonsense boss who casually uses supervillains to achieve her ends.

Since Suicide Squad, Waller has been played by Viola Davis in The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, and HBOs series Peacemaker, bringing her acting gravitas to the superhero world. Davis has one of the best filmographies of any living actor and her portrayal as Waller has always been one of the bright spots of the Dceu.

Having worked with Marvel Studios for the better part of 10 years on three movies and a TV special, it's fair to say that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn got a lot of insights into the studio's inner workings.

On several occasions, the filmmaker and DC Studios co-ceo has made it clear he intends to do things differently from his former employers. It's not that the Superman director is throwing shade at the MCU; instead, he plans to take his own approach, no great surprise given Marvel Studios' often chaotic habit of fixing its movies and TV shows with reshoots.

However, Gunn's latest remarks have raised a few eyebrows. Asked on Threads whether DC Studios will ever deliver an McU-style slate reveal, he responded, "It won’t be exactly like Marvel because nothing is greenlit before we have a finished script."

While the world is waiting to learn more about Wonder Woman in the DC Universe reboot, the Paradise Lost TV show gets a promising update from James Gunn himself.

As the first TV show from the DC Universe, Creature Commandos, is premiering in December, Gunn was recently asked on Threads by a fan if there was anything he could tease about the Paradise Lost series that is also in development for Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters." While not offering any names on attached creatives, Gunn assured the DC Universe audience that Paradise Lost is still being worked on, stating the project is in "very active development".

You're used to us sharing MCU rumours on a regular basis but, for the most part, the Dcu isn't the subject of quite so many leaks. Then, there's the small matter of DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn debunking them as quickly as they're reported!

Well, we have some Dcu updates from Nexus Point News' @ApocHorseman for you today. The biggest revelation is that The Authority is reportedly being reworked as an animated feature; if accurate, this is a huge change but one which makes sense given how obscure those characters are (and how positive early word on Creature Commandos has been). 

Talking of team-ups, it's said that early plans for Teen Titans call for the lineup to be the same as the animated series. That means we're getting Robin (the scooper admits he doesn't know which one), Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and Cyborg.

James Bond actor Daniel Craig is officially in talks to star in a DC Studios Sgt. Rock adaptation. James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe will open with a dozen projects across all genres, formats, tones, and eras, including live-action entries such as James Gunn's Superman and the Lanterns miniseries, as well as animated series like Creature Commandos. Although the Dcu's "Gods and Monsters" chapter is already pretty crowded, more upcoming DC projects are yet to be officially announced.

As reported by Deadline, Queer director and star Luca Guadagnino and Daniel Craig will reunite for a Sgt. Rock movie. Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote Guadagnino's Challengers and Queer, is also penning the script. Sgt. Rock will reportedly be the next film in the Guadagnino's career.

After teaming up for the biographical period drama Queer, filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and Daniel Craig could pull the pin on an adaptation of Sgt. Rock for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. The life of a Starfleet commanding officer often means difficulty in maintaining family relationships, as seen with both Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), who prioritize their Starfleet careers over family. Unlike Kirk and Picard, however, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's then-Commander Sisko was a family man from DS9's very first episode.

The Dceu had a very unique look as far as cinematic universe go. Zack Snyder managed to craft a great universe that managed to not only be as dark and gritty as DC is expected to be but also managed to excite audiences for what’s to come….until it didn’t.

WB onboarded Joss Whedon in hopes of recapturing the success of the Avengers, only for the film to crash and burn. The MCU, despite experiencing a few less successful and even failed projects, remains a stable and coherent narrative universe that continues to move forward. Whether you enjoy these films or feel fatigued by them, you have to admit that the MCU’s consistency is impressive.

In contrast, the DC Comics universe has struggled. The Dceu was created as a response to the MCU, but it ultimately fell short. While there were some individual successes, Zack Snyder never managed to weave everything into a cohesive story. Combined with a series of poor decisions, the Dceu failed as expected.

Warner Bros. has since brought in James Gunn and Peter Safran to turn things around. They are now working on building the Dcu, which aims to be DC’s answer to the MCU. But what about the relationship between the Dceu and the Dcu? We know Gunn is starting fresh, but there’s more to consider…...

The MCU is, despite a string of less successful and even failed outings, still a stable, coherent narrative universe that keeps going forward. Whether you like these films and the stories they are telling or not, whether you’re fatigued or not, there’s one thing you have to admit – the MCU’s coherence is admirable.

The same thing cannot be said about the DC Comics universe. The Dceu was established as a reaction to the MCU, but it failed to deliver. There were some good individual outings, but Zack Snyder never managed to connect everything into a proper story, and combined with all the numerous bad decisions, the Dceu failed. As expected.

Warner Bros. then brought in James Gunn and Peter Safran to fix things, and the two of them are now working on building the Dcu, which is supposed to be DC’s answer to the MCU.

Max today revealed the official trailer for Creature Commandos at New York Comic Con. The adult animated series, written and executive-produced by James Gunn, will premiere on Thursday, December 5.

Based on DC characters and produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, a new episode will debut weekly until January 16, 2025.
