Original literary work: "La plus précieuse des marchandises", tale by Jean-Claude Grumberg, published by Le Seuil, Paris, 2019, 128 pages, ISBN: 978-2021414196.
A preparatory short film was made using 15 real actors (not listed) in the Théâtre de l'Épée de Bois, in Vincennes, near Paris. There were no sets, no costumes and no props. For instance, the actress playing the lumberjack's wife walked in ball pits to simulate the hard walk in the snow. This whole enterprise helped block the movie, set the duration to 75 minutes and served as a kind of storyboard for the director.
