Netflix’s new adaptation of Devil May Cry has garnered significant hype, not just for the mere fact that it’s adapting the beloved demon-slaying franchise to animation, but because of a casting choice that has many long-time fans baffled and confused. Johnny Yong Bosch, the voice actor for playing Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5, has now been cast to voice Dante, the series’ primary protagonist, in the Netflix show.

This choice is obviously going to confuse many fans who have long associated Johnny Yong Bosch’s voice with Nero and Dante’s voice actor, Reuben Langdon, was sort of irreplaceable. While nobody is questioning Bosch’s talents as a voice actor to bring the protagonist to life, it seems like an odd choice to hire an original Devil May Cry voice actor to reprise a different role.

Though delays and disappointments are inevitable, 2023 really is shaping up to be an all-time great year for gaming. In fact, it’s the kind of year that is so stacked that some games (even great ones) will inevitably get lost in the shuffle. There’s just sadly never enough time to play everything worth playing.
Yet, for fans of the long-dormant Wario Land franchise, there is only one game in 2023 that really matters. It’s called Pizza Tower, and I’m not kidding when I tell you that it has the potential to be one of the year’s best games.
Pizza Tower (available on Steam) is a 2D platformer that tells the tale of a “surprisingly agile and powerful fat balding Italian” chef named Peppino Spaghetti. Spaghetti’s peaceful life running a pizza shop is interrupted one day when the nefarious Pizza Face informs the chef that he intends...

After Capcom’s Devil May Cry hit the scene with its stylish action and cool-as-hell protagonist, fans were hungry for more from Dante and company. To say that the sequel didn’t exactly live up to expectations was an understatement. Gone were Trish and Dante’s iconic one-liners and attitude, and in their place we had Lucia and a Dante that was more concerned with coin flips than cracking smart. In the years since the release of Devil May Cry 2, Capcom, much like the fans, has acted as if the first sequel never happened.
And really, looking back at the game now, it’s plain to see why.
After battling demons at a museum with the aid of a mysterious woman named Lucia, Dante is invited to Lucia’s homeland of Vie de Marli, an island sanctuary. There, the Uroboros corporation has installed itself, looking to harness “special ores” found on the island.

Video game sequels are honestly kind of a miracle.
Sequels are generally burdened by the need to build upon something good (or successful) enough to justify a sequel in the first place. At the same time, they’re expected to offer an experience that stands fairly tall on its own. They’re supposed to grow tall while living in the shadow of a memory of how their predecessors made people feel. Some sequels overcome the cruel construct of that format in spectacular ways. Many others (even those made with good intentions) fall well short.
Video game sequels have always been a little different. Many of them benefit from the simple fact that they’re able to take advantage of better technology and design lessons learned to offer something that is often objectively better than its predecessor in at least some basic ways. Video game sequels are often more beloved than what came before.

Before listening to this week’s Devil May Cry-centric chat, check out last week’s episode discussing the original Dead Space!
No matter your age, we all have glaring back catalog oversights. Games that we missed due to console allegiances or simply being too far removed, age-wise, from their initial release. And while I used to view these oversights as embarrassing, over the years, I have come to appreciate my somewhat unique position of being late to the party for several behemoth franchises.
Case in point: Ninja Theory’s 2013 DmC: Devil May Cry reboot.
While it’s difficult to be oblivious to Dmc’s importance to the action horror genre, it wasn’t until last year that I played the original in the storied series. Being the Dmc novice I am, I was excited to dive into DmC, given my lack of entrenched fandom for the series.

Games from New Blood Interactive tend to wear their influences on their sleeves. Their breakout hit Dusk is a backwater horror take on Quake and Doom. Amid Evil gives a modern update to the classic Heretic and Hexen. Ultrakill takes the gameplay of Quake and adds in an aggressive layer of Devil May Cry style. Their latest game, Gloomwood just launched in Early Access, and this game is exactly what’s promised by the game’s URL, thiefwithguns.com. What makes their games extra special is that they go beyond the level of mere imitation, forging their own unique identities through strong style choices and smart design decisions. From the first act of Gloomwood, it’s clear that they’re already off to an incredible start.

It’s not hard to understand how “franchises” became a bad word. At a time when ideas are born to become IPs, it’s easy to look down on the very idea of a franchise. However, not all franchises are treated equally. In fact, there have been quite a few video game franchises that never really got the chance they deserved.
It’s odd to think of a video game franchise eventually being lost to time. After all, the very idea of a game becoming a franchise means that it obviously was a big enough deal at one point to be worthy of follow-ups. Yet, history has shown that it’s surprisingly easy for a series to just vanish. Some fell off the radar due to bad sales or a few bad entries, but others vanished from our collective conscious for no good reason at all.

You may think that the PC version of Elden Ring‘s bugs and performance issues make it the worst version of the game, but fans are quickly discovering that it’s hard to ignore the appeal of Elden Ring‘s best mods.
Thanks to sites such as Nexus Mods, players can download and install fanmade programs and additions that alter Elden Ring in significant ways. Some mods are merely cosmetic, such as altering the Greatsword’s model to look like Cloud’s Buster Sword, while others dissect the game’s code via a cheat menu. Of course, not all mods are created equal, and there are some that greatly enhance the already great experience in some way.
Now, a word of warning: Elden Ring utilizes an anti-cheat system, Easy Anti-Cheat. This program will potentially ruin your day if it detects even the most benign of mods, so for your own sanity,...

I love “so bad, they’re good” movies. From canonical classics like Plan 9 From Outer Space and The Room to deeply flawed gems like Miami Connection and Samurai Cop, the best “so bad, they’re good” movies are more than simple guilty pleasures. As that designation suggests, they’re movies that make it genuinely hard to answer the seemingly simple question “Is it good?”
When it comes to gaming, though, it’s always been tougher to find proper “so bad, they’re good” titles. Games like Deadly Premonition, Metal Wolf Chaos, and Harvest all arguably belong in that category, but most bad games are just fundamentally unenjoyable experiences that are fun to mock. Games that fall so far into “bad” that they somehow end up landing closer to “good” are rare.
That’s what makes Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin so special. In some ways, it’s a legitimately good game.

While I wouldn’t go so far as to say that 2021 has been a banner year for hard video games, anyone who seeks out difficult games as a cathartic escape from difficult times certainly won’t be disappointed by this year’s selection of controller smashing, monitor breaking, soul-shaking experiences.
In fact, it was an especially interesting year for difficult Triple-a and AA games. From Metroid Dread to certain difficult settings in Resident Evil Village, it really does seem like more and more major studios are starting to explore the viability of at least adding optional difficulty modes to their major releases designed to make some of the year’s biggest games as punishing as possible.
Of course, many of the year’s hardest games can still be found on the indie scene where smaller studios continue to argue against the idea that they just don’t make hard video games like they used to…...

As the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S set incredible sales paces in the midst of strange times, and the Nintendo Switch continues to exceed all sales expectations, many fans find themselves wondering whether or not any of those consoles can eventually dethrone the best-selling video game console of all-time: the PlayStation 2.
Well, as you probably guessed based on this article’s headline, my answer to that question is “No.” The PlayStation 2’s position atop the best-selling console chart isn’t an accident and it’s not a record meant to be taken lightly. It’s arguably the one video game sales record that will never be beaten.
Here are just some of the reasons why the PS2’s astonishing 155 million unit sales record likely isn’t in danger of falling anytime soon.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is fielding a massive multimedia transition with star-studded television projects—launched with Disney+ series WandaVision—complementing the studio’s theatrical slate. While that initiative has relegated its former small screen endeavor, the Netflix “Street Level” Marvel shows, to the proverbial bin of forgotten toys, Iron Fist star Finn Jones maintains that his nixed Netflix series would have completed a poignant arc, as he reveals with plot details for the never-realized third season.
Iron Fist, like its cohorts Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher , and crossover team-up The Defenders, became the casualty of a shifting landscape when Disney decided to cut out the production and distribution middle men and have Marvel Studios natively produce more directly-connected MCU television projects for its own Disney+ platform. The best-selling video games easily rake in more money from sales than the biggest blockbuster movies do at the box office, which is why the industry is so determined to make console-to-screen adaptations a viable enterprise, despite so many of them suffering from dismal critical and commercial performances over the last quarter of a century.
There’s been a definite upturn in quality over the last few years, though, with smash hits Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog becoming the first two adaptations to score a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Witcher ascended to pop culture phenomenon status and instantly established itself as one of Netflix‘s marquee TV shows after dominating both the conversation and the most-watched list for weeks on end.

Sony has just kicked off its latest sale for all PlayStation owners, this time in celebration of the year’s spookiest holiday.
Well over 200 individual games (including Dlc and special editions) are currently available for a fraction of their usual asking price in the aptly-named Halloween Sale, with the majority of those included in the promotion belonging to the horror genre. There are some exceptions that wholly ignore the theme, of course, such as Crash Team Racing and Spyro (your guess is as good as ours), but generally speaking, most of what you’ll find here either contains zombies, human-eating monsters, murderous animatronic animals or legions of demons intent on enslaving Earth’s entire population.

On Oct. 16, Hulu will be releasing the latest Marvel tie-in series Helstrom. It’s not so much like one of those upcoming Disney+ McU shows that feature high-profile superheroes telling stories that will be important to the overall fictional universe. It’s more like Daredevil or Runaways where quality be damned, you’re never going to hear anyone in the movies make anything close to a reference to it, but it counts as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe anyway.
The series is about siblings Daimon Helstrom and Ana Helstrom, who have seemingly normal lives, but oppose demons and evil people on the side. Their mother is institutionalized, which is fairly true to the comics, but their father is also referred to as “a powerful serial killer.”
In the comics, things are a bit grander. Their father isn’t just any serial killer, but a variation of Satan. Marvel has...

Netflix’s love affair with video game adaptations looks to continue for some time yet.
Castlevania, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and The Witcher have all already made their way to the streaming site or will be doing so soon, and it looks like we can add one more to that list in the form of The Legend of Zelda. Yes, whispers of a project based on the game have been floating around for a while now and last week, We Got This Covered brought you the news that Netflix is eyeing Tom Holland for the role of Link.
Though that still remains to be confirmed by the company itself, two trusted insiders have backed up our intel today, with Grace Randolph tweeting that it’s indeed true, but it’s still early, early days.

Adapting video games into movies and series doesn’t always go well, but Netflix have scored some recent successes with the likes of Castlevania and (technically) The Witcher. And now, it seems that the streaming platform are investing in the genre in a significant way, with several notable productions in development as part of their large slate of new content. What titles, then, should we be looking forward to?
Well, first up, Resident Evil is coming to the service via Supernatural producer Andrew Dabb. This adaptation has been on the cards for some time and fans are already pretty excited about it. Rather than work with a single storyline, though, Resident Evil will apparently create its own world that incorporates elements from the franchise and will take place in two different timelines.
Another program coming to the streamer is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a spinoff of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 game from CD Projekt Red.

Resident Evil, one of gaming’s most popular franchises of all time, has just surpassed a major sales milestone, Capcom has confirmed. First-person shooter Bright Memory: Infinite managed to steal the show during yesterday’s Xbox Series X showcase thanks to its frantic action, wonderful graphics, and the story of its one-man development team.
“I am so excited to have the chance to announce to the world that my indie game Bright Memory: Infinite will officially be released on the Xbox Series X once development is complete,” says Bright Memory: Infinite developer Zeng Xiancheng via a recent blog post. “It is very humbling to witness the advent of Microsoft’s next-generation console and what it can do.”
Bright Memory is described as a “sprawling, futuristic metropolis in the year 2036.” It stars a character named Shelia who is part of the mysterious Supernatural Science Research Organization. Said organization has access to high-end futuristic weaponry, which is quite handy considering that Shelia must do battle with samurai who seem to have traveled through time for…...

Capcom may have already achieved the incredible feat of releasing two reimagined classics within the space of a year, but it’s not done yet. Resident Evil 3‘s long-awaited remake is out in just a matter of days and while early signs point to it being more divisive than its predecessor, commercial performance will likely prove yet again that an appetite exists for more of the same.
It goes without saying, then, that the developer no doubt has more revivals in the pipeline, though not necessarily of vintage Resident Evil games. If recent rumors are to be believed, in fact, Capcom is pushing forward with the survival horror series’ next numbered entry before it even considers more nostalgia-fueled projects, but said claims only concern that particular franchise.
The company-wide strategy, it seems, is to deliver more industry-leading remakes in the future, with at least one likely already in development.

While big and small screen adaptations of classic video game franchises traditionally get a bad rap, things have been getting better as of late. In the last year alone, we were graced with not one, but two solid films (Detective Pikachu and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie), and while it’s technically based on the book series of the same name, it’s hard to deny that fans of the Witcher video games contributed to the show’s success.
In fact, The Witcher is not the only Netflix video game adaptation that’s been getting a lot of love recently. The animated Castlevania series, which originally premiered back in 2017, has received praise from both critics and audiences alike, and it’s gone on to become one of the most successful original animated shows on the platform.
It should come as no surprise then that it was recently renewed for a fourth season,...

Blizzard has let slip that there are Overwatch and Diablo animated series on the way.
Two of Blizzard's biggest franchises, Overwatch and Diablo, could be getting the animated series treatment, according to information revealed by Nick Van Dyk, the president of Activision Blizzard Studios, on LinkedIn. On his resume, Dyk confirmed that he worked on both animated series -- an Overwatch cartoon and a Diablo anime, the latter of which is in pre-production and will be distributed worldwide by Netflix. This news was first reported by IGN.
This isn't the first time we've heard that a Diablo animated series is in the works. In 2018, Boom! Studios founder Andrew Cosby posted and then deleted an announcement on Twitter that he was in talks with Netflix to make a Diablo series. Blizzard never confirmed these talks and has yet to confirm them now, but the company has been pushing...

When I first saw the announcement regarding the Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle, my first thought was “When did I get so old?” Had it really been close to a decade since PlatinumGames released these iconic games? After I dragged myself out of that existential crisis, though, I thought about what a treat this would be. There was the re-release on the Nintendo Switch and the backward compatibility for the Xbox One, but a vast majority of gamers have missed out on both titles. Now that Sega has given an HD shine to both, there’s no better time to experience them.
Both Bayonetta and Vanquish dabble in camp but under different circumstances. Starring the titular witch, Bayonetta is a decadent romp that often borders on the incoherent. There are angelic forces known as Lumens, a Joe Pesci-like sidekick, and some moments that can (unfortunately) only be referred to as horny.

During the early-year drought of new game releases, I find myself genre-hopping more than usual. Trying to scratch an itch for big action, I recently played the original Devil May Cry for the first time, along with tons of retro-style shooters like Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, Amid Evil, and Dusk. All good games, all good times. But what if I told you, dear reader, that you could have all the stylish score-system goodness of a character action game mixed with the texture-warped chunkiness of a pseudo-retro shooter. Well, get ready, because it’s Ultrakill season.
Ultrakill has a familiar art style –tf so much so that I initially overlooked it as just another of the recent batch of Unity shooters made to look as jaggy and bloody as possible. To be fair, it is one of those, and those are all great (so far), but I had just had my fill.

Powerhouse Animation, the VFX studio responsible for a certain Count Dracula, has placed its Twitter followers on red alert with a couple of intriguing teases for Castlevania season 3.
The third installment of the cult animated series was once rumored for a late 2019 premiere on Netflix, though, sadly, nothing came to pass. But fear not; for it seems the bat-shaped void is about to be filled very soon indeed, after Powerhouse Animation took to Twitter to literally spell out ‘2020’ with vampire emojis. The studio then doubled down on the Castlevania hype four days later, sharing a screenshot of the Netflix home screen which clearly states: “It’s official: Another Season [of Castlevania] is Coming.”
Sound the klaxon! Granted, Powerhouse stopped short of unveiling a specific date; but make no mistake, this is the first tangible update on Castlevania season 3 we’ve had in a very long time, so surely it won’t...

Mario might not be the only Nintendo mascot headed to movie theatres in the near future, it would seem.

With modern classic Breath of the Wild undoubtedly scoring the green-garbed hero legions of new fans since 2017, it wouldn’t be at all surprising for the popular Japanese publisher to announce yet another venture into film territory.
And that appears to be exactly what it has planned. If a now-deleted tweet from Netflix Nordic is any indication, the third installment of Castlevania will be on our screens as soon as next week.
Earlier today, the online streaming giant released a graphic detailing all of the many TV shows and movies headed to Netflix over the next four weeks, one of which was Castlevania season 3. Its official air date? December 1st, 2019, though the Powers That Be quickly pulled said tweet, casting doubt over the show’s Eta. We will, of course, keep you right up-to-date as more information comes to light.
Now entering its third year on the streaming service, Castelvania rose from humble beginnings: a four-episode season in which viewers were introduced to a grief-stricken Dracula, hell-bent on vengeance following the murder of his wife. Hoping to drive a stake through his heart is disgraced monster hunter Trevor Belmont, who hails from a family of vampire killers.

If there’s any end in sight for Resident Evil 2 mods, it sure won’t arrive anytime soon. Even with the blockbuster remake’s release being nine months behind us, we’re still seeing some talented and tech savvy diehard fans having fun with the fright fest.
Most recently, we’ve witnessed Mr. X being swapped out for the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, which probably had to be one of my favorite mods to date. In addition to that, players were reunited with an old favorite in the form of Barry Burton, and we all know he isn’t utilized too often by Capcom themselves. If you’d like to spend more time with him and meet his pottymouth of a daughter, Moira, then I highly recommend picking up Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – but that’s a discussion for another day.

Following the massive success of this year’s Resident Evil 2 remake, it’s no wonder that Capcom is open to revisiting some of its other classics and dusting off various intellectual properties. With that in mind, fans have already begun pondering the possibilities of modernized versions of the first Dino Crisis and Devil May Cry games, in addition to several others.
To be quite honest, I believe Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to be next on the company’s agenda, as that’s already said to be in development. But after that, I do think there’s a good possibility a Code: Veronica remake could follow. After all, there’s already been much demand for it online, so why not give the people what they want?
Should Capcom indeed want to revisit Code: Veronica somewhere down the line, voice actress Stephanie Panisello is apparently down for reprising her Claire Redfield role.

The only game in the Devil May Cry series that I’ve played was the relatively recent reboot, with the original four games completely passing me by (they were released during a time I did hardly any gaming. What dark days they were) and so it was with no expectations that I went into this recent re-release of Devil May Cry 2 and whilst I had fun with it, that mid-2000’s design philosophy and subsequent gameplay limitations does make the game feel very much of its time which will be a boon to some but perhaps alienate others.
As demon-hunter Dante, Devil May Cry 2 follows on from the original game and sees you making your way through cavernous gothic-inspired locations in your quest. Running at a very smooth 60fps, the game plays great and the ability to flick fluidly between gunplay and melee combat as well as the sense of...

Resident Evil 2, despite launching all the back in January of this year, remains a Game of the Year frontrunner. For diehard fans of the long-running survival horror series, it’s a no-brainer. Capcom’s staggering attention to detail in recreating Leon and Claire’s escape from Raccoon City has set a new benchmark for what to expect from a remake and the genre as a whole. That being the case, it’s not even remotely surprising that survivors of the doomed city and its tyrannic inhabitants are itching for more.
Currently, two projects are largely considered to follow in that game’s wake. Either a direct sequel to 2017’s experimental (and excellent) Resident Evil 7 or a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Right now, the path could diverge in either direction and, officially, at least, the developer has yet to announce either title. If recent events are any indication, however,...

More than most, Capcom’s Dead Rising series has had a tumultuous past. What began as a humble new IP all the way back in 2006 exploded to become one of the Japanese studio’s core franchise’s in the years that followed. A sequel to Frank West’s zombie-infested mall run arrived in 2010 to satiate the thirst for mass slaughter of the undead, only this time with a few twists. For starters, unlikely hero West was replaced with new protagonist Chuck Greene and Capcom Vancouver (then Blue Castle Games) was chosen to spearhead development.
From that point on, Vancouver steered the ship over a wave of success, eventually garnering the interest of Microsoft. As a result, Dead Rising 3 became a launch exclusive for Xbox One, a streak that continued – and ultimately ended – with the fourth and final installment. Devil May Cry is coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2019.
Capcom has revealed that the original Devil May Cry is being ported to the Nintendo Switch.
The reveal came in the form of a surprising tweet which confirms that 2001's Devil May Cry is coming to Nintendo's console sometime this summer. Unfortunately, Capcom doesn't share any footage or screenshots of this port. Actually, we don't know much about this game at all at this time.
What we do know is that you should probably be excited about this port. Devil May Cry is a revolutionary video game that never quite seems to get all of the respect that it deserves. Actually, Devil May Cry reportedly began its life as Resident Evil 4. However, the game's designers inspired to create a more action-heavy title that required them to abandon Resident Evil's infamous control scheme, dynamic camera system, and other trademark elements.
