“The idea of theater has always terrified me, and it still does,” Asa Butterfield says from the rehearsal room of London’s National Youth Theatre.
The British star, famed for his performance as Otis Milburn in Netflix’s awkwardly raunchy teen hit Sex Education, has been in showbiz for a long time. After minor roles in ITV’s After Thomas (2006) and Garth Jennings’ comedy Son of Rambow (2007), Butterfield was cast at age 10 as the lead in Mark Herman’s Holocaust drama The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
“When you’re a kid, you don’t actually learn that much about acting,” Butterfield admits to The Hollywood Reporter about his early roles. “I didn’t learn to act until I was maybe 14. You suddenly have those inhibitions you didn’t have as a 9- or 10-year-old. You’re more self-conscious. I was starting to think about, like, ‘What am I doing with my face?...

In the era of streaming, there are always new series to check out for viewers of all tastes, and the best TV shows to stream this week highlight that fact. With Netflix, Hulu, Max, and the other big-name streamers constantly putting out content, there are new shows as well as new episodes of hit series becoming available each week. With so much out there, it can be hard to keep track of everything that should be on the watchlist, but there are some notable titles worth pointing out.
This week, there are exciting new docuseries made available to audiences, taking a look at things like the scandal of Sean “Diddy” Combs, as well as a peek behind the scenes at Saturday Night Live. Max’s newest original series merges the best of ER and 24, combining the stakes of life-saving emergency medicine with a real-time format to deliver one of the year’s most engaging shows (so what if the year is only 10 days old?). The medical drama, the first two episodes of which are now streaming, also counts several ER vets amidst its ranks, as it was created by R. Scott Gemmill, produced by John Wells, and stars Noah Wyle. They know what they’re doing, and it shows.
Set in a trauma hospital in Pittsburgh, the first season follows a 15-hour shift in an emergency department led by Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. Maladies range from the relatively mundane to the gruesome and dire as Robby and his team, including overconfident interns and green student doctors, attend to the never-ending flow of patients. In Rogue Heroes season 2’s ending, Paddy Mayne realized a simple but important thing about himself. He understood that there really was no cure for the madness and anger he had inside him. Men like Paddy Mayne weren’t afraid to die in war, but what came after the war ended? They knew they wouldn’t be able to spend the rest of their lives dealing with the voices in their heads. The cries of those British men that they had left to drown. The voices of the friends they had lost in the war. The pain of the enemies who were killed on the battlefield. Paddy Mayne knew that there was no future for a man like him in peacetime. The only way these rogue heroes would find peace in their lives was by ending the life they had. But not without a fight. Not while Hitler was still alive.

Steven Knight created “Sas Rogue Heroes,” a unique wartime drama that mixes facts with a cinematic flair. Audiences were captivated by the show’s first season, which was praised for its vivid depiction of the top British regiment’s early adventures in North Africa. Not only did the series receive positive reviews from critics, but it also started discussions about the representation of military themes in modern media. As Season 2 progresses, viewers get more and more excited to see how the narrative will evolve and what new points of view it will bring.
The shift from David Stirling, portrayed by Connor Swindells, to Paddy Mayne, who Jack O’Connell fervently played, marks a significant shift in the series’ main themes. Mayne appears as a raw, impulsive force, challenging conventional notions of heroism, unlike Stirling, who embodied a cool, calculated leader. Rogue Heroes is not a story about World War II, it is the story of three friends who, in their own eccentric manner, did something that the world never expected them to. These three individuals were nothing like the British armed forces had ever seen. One was a dreamer who wanted to prove to his veteran father that he was worthy of his name. Another was a madman who didn’t think before acting. The third one was the most sensible of them, but still, he lived in his own delusional world intentionally. The sensible one knew that to win the war, he needed men who were not pragmatic in their approach. So, let’s find out what happened in Rogue Heroes season 1 and if these three men were able to save the day for the Allied forces.

If there’s a show you’ve been waiting years to return, chances are it’s coming back in 2025. From “Stranger Things” Season 5, which is expected to premiere later this year, to “Severance” Season 2, some of the biggest and buzziest shows on television are expected to make their returns in this new year.
Part of the reason for this big return has to do with the residual effects of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Those historic Hollywood effects delayed production across the board. While broadcast series were largely able to air new episodes in 2024, prestige streaming and cable shows — which typically take a bit longer to produce on average — needed a bit more time to bounce back.
But bounce back they did. And it’s not just the “White Loti” and “Andors” of the world fans have to look forward to. Do you love procedural classics? New episodes of...

The British star (so the emphasis is on the “ar” in “arse”) is discussing his start in the industry with the global Netflix hit Sex Education. “I always think the worst and think, ‘No one’s going to see anything,'” he says about being unable to predict the show’s success. But it helps, being a pessimistic arse, he adds. “If you become conscious of an audience, you set yourself up to fail in many respects.”
The 28-year-old has the world at his feet. Life after Sex Education has been fruitful. He nabbed the lead role in Steven Knight’s (Peaky Blinders) military drama Sas Rogue Heroes and later, a job alongside Will Ferrell in a small production called Barbie.

From a buzzy sci-fi horror to a documentary about the 1960s California music scene, these are the best MGM+ original series streaming now.
Arguably, there’s been no better way to wrap up 2024 than with a series about the apocalypse. With the success of survival dramas in recent years like “The Last of Us” and “Fallout,” MGM+ recently premiered its adaptation of George R. Stewart’s 1949 novel “Earth Abides” The six-episode limited series, which stars Alexander Ludwig, Jessica Frances Dukes, Aaron Tveit, and more, takes place as a viral pandemic has decimated the vast majority of the human species and a group of shattered survivors fight against full extinction, rebuilding society from scratch.
The post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama debuted on Dec. 1 and will wrap up its story on Dec. 29, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bring your subscription with you into the new year. The streamer is home to plenty of other great series,...

Top End Wedding was a rom-com road trip that ended with the nuptials of Lauren and Ned. The series follow-up to the hit Australian movie picks up the couple’s story as they unexpectedly become parents.
“I thought there was more to Lauren and Ned, we only saw them within the very few stressful days leading up to their wedding,” says Miranda Tapsell who plays Lauren and co-wrote the movie and series with Joshua Tyler. “Josh and I always entertained the idea of what happens after happily ever after?”
It turns out what happens is parenthood. The couple assume parental duties for Taya (Gladys-May Kelly), aka the Bub of the title. Her mother, Lauren’s cousin, has died unexpectedly.
Lauren, a dynamic Indigenous lawyer ticking off life goals and Ned, her British husband, move back to the Top End (where the outback meets the tropics) to raise Bub. As they...

The first season of Rogue Heroes was a diamond in the rough since it was only accessible through Epix. Our own Alex Maidy enjoyed it immensely and said, “Rogue Heroes is a series that would have been a massive hit had it aired on Netflix or any of the bigger streaming platforms. Like Pennyworth before it, many who don’t often check out Epix are going to be at risk of missing a solid war story that doesn’t require a long-term investment.” Now season 2 has just dropped its trailer and will become available on MGM+.
The critically acclaimed hit drama series follows David Stirling (Connor Swindells) and Paddy Mayne (Jack O’Connell) in a dramatized account of how the British Army’s Special Air Service (Sas) unit was formed in the darkest days of World War II. BBC has launched an official trailer for the next episodes in the mini-series titled Sas: Rogue Heroes (or just Rogue Heroes) about the original creation of the Special Forces unit, the Special Air Service ("Sas") during World War II. The Sas was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. The highly entertaining action thriller series is based on Ben Macintyre's book, which charts the creation of the famed Special Forces unit. Season 2's ensemble cast includes Jack O'Connell, Sofia Boutella, Dominic West, Con O'Neill, Stuart Thompson, Paolo De Vita, Anna Manuelli, Edward Bennett, Matteo Franco, and Gwilym Lee as Stirling's brother Bill,...

Last year, it was reported that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight was tapped to pen the screenplay for the untitled Rey-centric Star Wars movie with Ms. Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct. ‘The Killer’s Game’ Star Sofia Boutella Talks Her Action Respite and ‘Rebel Moon’ Character’s Future
Sofia Boutella desperately needed a break from action, and J.J. Perry’s The Killer’s Game provided exactly that.
After devoting nearly the entirety of 2022 to her most physically demanding role yet as Kora/Arthelais in Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon franchise, Boutella was relieved that she didn’t have to bear the burden of being the primary action hero in Perry’s action-comedy. Instead, she was charmed by the romantic role she was offered alongside her former Hotel Artemis co-star Dave Bautista. Her Rebel Moon character also didn’t have the greatest luck in the romance department, so The Killer’s Game’s more hopeful love story likely appealed to her as well.
The Algerian actor’s physical background is still on full display in the opening sequence, as her character, Maize, is a ballet dancer who’s eying retirement when she meets Bautista’s assassin character, Joe Flood.
