Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Closet Monster (Stephen Dunn)
Writer/director Stephen Dunn’s feature debut Closet Monster cares little about convention to tell the story of Oscar Madly (Connor Jessup) growing up with a psychological revulsion to his sexual urges, all thanks to an extremely disturbing event witnessed as a child. This prologue glimpse at his youth (played by Jack Fulton) is a mash-up of tough coming-of-age-dramatics and a dark-edged imaginative whimsy that intrigues to draw you closer.

Marc Abraham's career has known box office success as well as critical lionising, with films such as Children of Men and Spy Game standing out for attention on a resume which covers over twenty years in the business. Having made the transition from producer to director with 2008's Flash of Genius, his latest film I Saw The Light is a study of country legend Hank Williams. He spoke with CineVue's Tom Duggins, making his infectious passion for William's writing apparent from the get-go in an interview that focused on the folklore of country and the difficulty of representing pop stars on screen.

Bradley Rubenstein: What were some of your early experiences, like school, for example, where you decided to become an artist?
Sarah Davis: My radar was, What’s the best thing to be doing when you’re 80? Where are the best-looking old people? And for me, that was obviously painters, or the art world more generally. Maybe I was close to my grandparents, or maybe it came from going to high school in L.A., where the projected end was 30. Still, painting was my identity from about age 8. Every kind of picture book, and there were tons of them, was how I spent my free time. I copied everything and made up my own. Making paintings and drawings was how I socialized, from third grade on.

“I Saw the Light” opens with Tom Hiddleston as Hank Williams, sitting on a stool in a spotlight, his face downward and obscured by his ever-present cowboy hat. Once set to have arrived in theaters last week, Sony Pictures Classics decided to move I Saw the Light, the Hank Williams biopic which finds Tom Hiddleston in the leading role, to 2016. Coming from longtime producer Marc Abraham (Children of Men, Dawn of the Dead), whose directorial debut was Flash of Genius, the film will now arrive in March and today brings the first trailer.
We said in our review, “The opening to Marc Abraham‘s I Saw the Light holds a lot of intrigue. Toronto – We’re not going to beat around the bush here. Despite the worthy efforts of stars Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, the Hank Williams biopic “I Saw The Light” is a shockingly bad movie. It’s such a disappointment we’re not even sure where to begin. Well, perhaps a quick history lesson is in order first. Hank Williams (Tom Hiddleston) was a legendary Country music singer and songwriter who had 11 no. 1 singles on the Billboard Country and Western Charts during a career that lasted only six years. The Alabama native first hit the charts in 1947 and actually had one of his biggest hits, “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” following his untimely death in 1953. He was just 29-years-old. In the decades since his music has influenced icons such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Keith Richards, among others. Let's continue, shall we? He was married twice, first to Audrey Williams (Elizabeth Olsen...

I Saw the Light is the title of one of the most cherished songs by country legend Hank Williams, as well as that of a polished new biopic from producer turned director Marc Abraham (Flash of Genius). But another Williams standard, “Lovesick Blues,” would have been a more appropriate designation for this heavily dramatic recreation of the man's short and turbulent life, in a film that focuses more on his many marital woes than it does on the brilliant music he created. Carried by an uncanny turn from British actor Tom Hiddleston, who convincingly swaps his Loki helmet and

This fall, it seems two musical biopics will be slugging it out. Don Cheadle takes on jazz legend Miles Davis in "Miles Ahead," while Tom Hiddleston goes country as Hank Williams in "I Saw The Light." And the first look at Thor's brother in a ten gallon hat is here. Elizabeth Olsen, Cherry Jones, Bradley Whitford, Maddie Hasson, and Wren Schmidt co-star in the Marc Abraham ("Flash Of Genius") directed movie about the musician who hit the top of the charts and the depths of despair. Here's the official synopsis: I Saw The Light, the story of the legendary country western singer Hank Williams, who in his brief life created one of the greatest bodies of work in American music. The film chronicles his meteoric rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life. "I Saw The Light" opens on November 27th.

Will this upcoming awards season be the year of Tom Hiddleston? The popular Brit already has Guillermo Del Toro's "Crimson Peak" on tap for October and, now, he's officially in the mix for his performance as the iconic Hank Williams in Marc Abraham's "I Saw The Light." "Light" is based on Colin Escott's 1994 novel "Hank Williams: The Biography" and chronicles his rise to superstardom and tragic death at the age of 29. An autopsy revealed he died of a heart attack, but he was also a known alcoholic who had also developed addictions to morphine and other painkillers. Williams had 11 no. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart including two posthumously. The cast also includes Elizabeth Olsen as William's wife Audrey Mae and Bradley Whitford as Fred Rose (founder of the legendary Acruff-Rose Music which published Williams songs) as well as David Krumholtz, Cherry Jones, Wrenn Schmidt and Josh Pais.

Most notably known for this producer creds (Children of Men), Marc Abraham’s Hank Williams passion project has found a home with the Sony Pictures Classics. Check-marking Spc’s method of operation in acquiring titles with an already built-in fanbase, we’re expecting a Walk the Line type treatment for I Saw the Light. If we had to guess, it’ll contain generous musical outtakes in the Williams library, and in the best of worlds showcase a transcendental, fighting the demons perf from Tom Hiddleston and cover the bases of what would be a competitive/romantic/abusive dynamics with the equally headstrong Audrey Mae Williams (here played by Elizabeth Olsen). Look for a film festival launching – Telluride and/or Tiff would be appropriate.

First they took our American superheroes, and now they're after our country music legends, too? British thesp Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) is set to play American music icon Hank Williams in the biopic I Saw The Light. The film will be directed by Marc Abraham (Flash of Genius), and will be based on Colin Escott's "Hank Williams: The Biography."
Hiddleston is best known for his work as Loki in the Marvel movies, but has also had diverse roles in films like War Horse, and Midnight in Paris directed by Steven Spielberg and Woody Allen, respectively. The actor has all ready taken to twitter to give us our first official glimpse of him as Williams- the singer-songwriter responsible for classics such as "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Hey, Good Lookin'," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry."

Audiences are mostly familiar with Tom Hiddleston causing trouble for Thor and The Avengers, but now they'll see the actor in a completely different light. Deadline has word that the British star of stage and screen has been lined up to play country music legend Hank Williams in a biopic called I Saw the Light. The film is coming together as a co-production between Brett Ratner's RatPac Entertainment (he's been really busy producing lately), Bron Studios and Creative Wealth Media Finance. Flash of Genius director Marc Abraham will direct the film from his own script based on a biography on Williams by Colin Escott. The biopic will follow Williams as he rises to fame, and the consequences that came from it, shaking up his personal life dramatically, before his time was tragically cut short by heart failure at the age of 29. And much like Joaquin Phoenix did as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line,...

Best known for his reptilian portrayal of Loki in The Avengers and the Thor movies, as well as for uncanny impressions of some of his co-stars like Chris Evans and Owen Wilson, Tom Hiddleston is about to go the biopic route. The London native is attached to star as country and western icon Hank Williams in I Saw the Light, for heavyweight Hollywood producer Marc Abraham.
Hiddleston certainly looks the part, and plans to do all of his own singing for the role as well. So fans of the actor and his real-life counterpart should be ready to swoon during renditions of “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” That said, hopefully the genre’s most devout fans are fine that a British actor is taking the helm of an American songbird.

Tom Hiddleston is on tap to play one of the greatest American music icons, Hank Williams. Named for one of Williams' best known songs, "I Saw the Light" will see the British actor trying on a deep South accent and tackling tunes from the Williams songbook. The British actor has risen to fame in recent years for his delicious turn as Loki in the "Thor" films, for dancing on command, and co-starring as a storied and tortured musician in one of 2014's best films "Only Lovers Left Alive." Williams, on the other hand, rose to fame in his teens and died at 29 of complications due to his raging alcoholism and drug abuse, leave behind a rep of at least three dozen country, blues and gospel originals and renditions one could easily qualify as stone-cold classics. The singer/songwriter's fabled death alone could fill volumes (or at least a 90-minute film...

• Tom Hiddleston will star (and sing) as Hank Williams in an upcoming biopic about the country legend. I Saw The Light will be directed by Marc Abraham (Flash of Genius), who adapted the script from Colin Escott’s biography of Williams. Quite different than his role in The Avengers, Hiddleston will sing from the entire Williams catalog, with songs like “Hey, Good Lookin’,” after the rights were secured through a deal with Sony Atv. The film will follow Williams’ rise to fame before dying of heart failure at age 29. [Deadline]

Greg Kinnear is the perfect actor to star in Heaven is for Real, an adaptation of the nonfiction best-seller of the same name. The guy from Flash of Genius and Little Miss Sunshine is the one you want for another character struggling in life and trying to convince people of something. He has sad eyes but a charming smile. And in movies like this, no matter how you feel about the message at its core, you’ll like the person he’s playing and want him to succeed. If Tucker: The Man and His Dream or Field of Dreams were remade today, Kinnear would be a great choice to play either’s protagonist. Heaven is for Real is actually quite reminiscent of the latter. It’s set in the Midwest farmlands and deals with a man about to lose everything, it involves a father/son relationship and, most importantly, it involves the afterlife. Yet...

Here is the first trailer for the Steve Jobs biopic, Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher. He will play the Apple founder in what looks like a very safe by-the-numbers movie. It reminded me a lot of the movie Flash of Genius with Greg Kinnear playing Robert Kearns who takes on the Detroit automakers who he claims stole his idea for the intermittent windshield wiper. Note: Dermot Mulroney starred in that movie as well as Jobs, he’s like the go to biopic sidekick. That was a good movie, but like Jobs would likely play out better on TV instead – because it’s just not that interesting.
The trailer likes to make out that Jobs was “The Original Innovator”, “The Original Rebel”, and “The Original Visionary” because movies lie. There was a lot of innovation before the 1970′s I’m pretty sure. But look, Ashton Kutcher tucks in his shirt just like Steve Jobs…...

Garret Dillahunt (“Raising Hope”), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), and Jake Abel (The Host) are set to star in Ghosts Of The Pacific, the true story of three WWII Navy flyers cast adrift on the South Pacific in 1942. The feature will be produced by The American Film Company, which specializes in making movies based on true stories from America’s past.
Producer and American Film Co. president Brian Falk will be making his directorial debut recounting the incredible journey of pilot Harold Dixon (Dillahunt), bombardier Tony Pastula (Felton), and radioman Gene Aldrich (Abel) – virtual strangers assigned to a scouting mission on January 16, 1942. When they are forced to ditch their plane, the men are left with no food, water, or supplies; only a 4×8-foot yellow life raft to keep them afloat on a dangerous ocean.

Exclusive: Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are dissolving Strike Entertainment after an 11-year run as a Universal-based production company. The Universal first-look deal falls by the wayside this spring, and this ends a 15-year tenure at the studio for Abraham and Newman; Abraham previously partnered with Charlie Lyons and Army Bernstein in Beacon Communications, and Newman was a key executive there. Abraham and Newman said the partnership simply ran its course and that the parting is amicable. They will continue to work together on a bunch of projects they still have percolating under the Strike banner, but they have differing ambitions. Basically, Newman wants to continue to be a prolific producer. Abraham, who started as a writer and then made his directing debut on Flash Of Genius, the 2008 film that starred Greg Kinnear as the creator of the intermittent windshield wiper as he waged a long bitter battle against the...

This Means War
Directed by: McG
Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Chelsea Handler
Running Time: 1 hr 38 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 17, 2012
Plot: Two best friends and CIA agents (Pine and Hardy) fall for the same woman (Witherspoon). They try to top one another for her affections.
Who’S It For? This one is mainly for the ladies who absolutely adore the idea of two good-looking men fighting over her.
Overall
A hip bass line starts us off. Two CIA agents strut in and get ready for battle. Gun fire, explosions, and fisticuffs follow. We’re watching a spy movie! Right about then, the record screeches. This Means War makes me mad, even though it’s just an average, forgettable film.
The reason you may think I’m upset is because it begins as an action film and quickly turns into a rom-com. That’s not the case.

Speaking briefly, ‘Greg Kinnear and Billy Crudup swindle Alan Arkin in Wisconsin.’ Directed by Big Love producer Jill Sprecher, Thin Ice might be twisted suspense comedy, but it’s rather a cold, hard drama, which co-stars Lea Thompson (Mickey’s wife), David Harbour and Bob Balaban. Look, I dunno how lots of women do it, either. I’m just barely holding my shit together, and I only have myself to take care of: no husband, no kids. Not even any pets anymore. Not even any plants. But it’s pretty fucking clear how Sarah Jessica Parker’s Kate Reddy does it. How she manages to juggle a high-powered career, two demanding moppets, and a marriage: She’s got a buttload of dough, enough to live in a gorgeous Boston brownstone (with trips to the vacation home in New Hampshire!) and rely on a fantastic nanny and just buy stuff as a shortcut in the time-is-money, money-is-time tradeoff. Her husband has a flexible work schedule, doesn’t mind changing diapers or making dinner, and is all around a pretty amazing guy, as far as we can see. She’s even still crazy in love with him, as well she should be,...

This beautiful new poster manages to pull together the main themes of Lars von Trier's film incredibly effectively
The languid, deceptively simple poster for Lars von Trier's new film Melancholia works effectively on several different levels.
The movie is about the reaction of depressed newlywed Kirsten Dunst to the impending end of the world. A "rogue planet" that has been hiding behind the sun is about to hit the earth.
Von Trier's film is intended to illustrate his theory that people with depression react more calmly to awful events because they already expect everything that happens to them to be awful.
It's actually a relatively uncontroversial idea from this professional provocateur, who may have finally gone too far earlier this year when at a press conference to promote this film he said he understood and sympathised with Hitler "a little bit" and got himself banned from Cannes.

It's like The King Speech, but with orgasms!
Sex comedies are a dime a dozen these days. They are huge money makes and in the world of Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith, they certainly reign supreme amongst all other comedy genres. Because of this, we've seen Tons of sex comedies hit theaters. Hysteria is another one of these films. But this is...different, that's for sure. For one, its a period piece and, for two, it stars a bunch of classy British actors. And for three, its about the creation of the vibrator. If The King's Speech, Flash of Genius, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno had a baby, this would be it. Well the trailer certainly presents it as a one joke comedy, it was interesting enough to get me interested. I just hope the film will rise up past its slocky premise and deliver something truly special.

Brad Pitt looks for revenge in Sleepers
Remember Sleepers? The acclaimed 1996 drama film starring Brad Pitt (Seven), Kevin Bacon (Tremors) and Robert De Niro (Little Fockers) is coming to Blu-ray on Aug. 2 from Warner Home Video along with two other dramas, Sean Connery (Highlander) starrer The Name of the Rose and Copycat with Sigourney Weaver (Alien).
Sleepers is our favorite of the three movies. Directed by Barry Levinson (The Natural), the film tells the disturbing story of a group of boys who, after pulling a prank, are sent to a detention center and brutalized by the guards. Ten years later, the boys are grownup and get their chance for revenge. Billy Crudup (Almost Famous), Minnie Driver (Barney’s Version), Jason Patric (The Losers) and Dustin Hoffman (All the President’s Men) also star in the R-rated film, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Score.

"Overkill is underrated" was the understandable motto of Col. Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson) in last summer's 'The A-Team,' Joe Carnahan's underrated big-budget adaptation of the small-screen series. For now, though, it seems that Neeson and Carnahan are going to forgo overkill by teaming back up for a more scaled-back man-versus-nature adventure.

Update: Director Jon Favreau says his upcoming film about Disneyland Magic Kingdom, will Not be like A Night at the Museum. Favreau (Elf, Zathura, Iron Man 1 and 2) said on Sirius Satellite Radio's "Geektime!" that the storyline would be about a family in Disneyland who bring the attractions to life, but, "I don’t think it’s going to be mixing all the other movies. It would be awesome to be one of Iron Man director Jon Favreau's kids for the next few months -- they're going to be spending a lot of time at Disneyland. That's because their dad has been hired to figure out how to turn the theme park into a movie called The Magic Kingdom. The idea is to use the locations, rides and characters within the Magic Kingdom similar to how the Smithsonian was utilized in Night at the Museum so Daffy Duck, Buzz Lightyear and Jessica Rabbit could theoretically be dodging headhunters on the Jungle Cruise. Strike Entertainment (Flash of Genius) is developing the project for Disney.
Disney has been exploring this for a while, originally brought to them through the book series "Kingdom Keepers" in which a bunch of Florida teenagers are turned into holographic guides who have to fight Maleficent as the park's characters come to life.

Sony Pictures Classics recently unveiled this new official trailer (via Apple) for the British historic comedic drama Made in Dagenham, starring the always charming Sally Hawkins (seen above) as well as Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson and Rosamund Pike. The film is about a group of female workers in England in the 60s who start a strike at a Ford factory in protest against sexual discrimination. It has a kind of Flash of Genius vibe to it (another great film) but with some British sensibilities. It received mixed reviews from Toronto, but it doesn't look that bad, it actually looks like a solid film, so check out the official trailer below.
