Big studios have poured money into foreign-language films – but is this just a backdoor way to dominate overseas markets?
When the horror film The Orphanage opened big in its home country of Spain in October 2007, distributor Warner Brothers wanted director Ja Bayona to know he was loved. "We call him Jota," says Richard Fox, executive VP of international at Warner. "He's an amazing Superman fan, and I had a piece of kryptonite from the Bryan Singer version sent to my hotel in Barcelona. After this huge opening weekend, we went to a fish restaurant on Monday night to celebrate. I got there early, so I was sat there with my box of kryptonite, looking at the portraits on the wall: Bill Clinton, Tom Cruise, Zinedine Zidane. When Jota arrived, I gave him the kryptonite, and a guy took a photo. We sat and had a three-hour dinner. When we left,...

When you think of animation films in India, most likely what comes to mind is the cartoons for children, or perhaps the fun animation in Hum Tum. There has also been the full length feature films like Toonpur Ka Superhero and Roadside Romeo. However, those mostly have been geared towards kids. Well, now Disney, Utv Motion Pictures, and director Arnab Chaudhari are looking to change this perception and create a new world and genre with Arjun – The Warrior Prince. Based on the greatest Indian Epic, the Mahabharat, it tells the legendary tale of Arjun. The epic animated feature is the heroic journey of a young prince from the days of his youthful innocence to his emergence as a valiant hero who single handedly took on an entire army in the battle for justice and peace. Three years in the making, this action film features the voice talents of Yudhveer Bakoliya,...

Animated Utv/Disney Indian Co-production Arjun: The Warrior Prince Opens Friday, Here's The Trailer!
This Friday, May 25th, Disney and Utv are taking another stab at the Indian film market with the 2D CG animated epic, Arjun: The Warrior Prince. The film has been in the works for several years, and I recall seeing promo trailers as much as three years before this release. However, this time the film is actually going out into the world for real.Regular readers will know that this is not the first Disney production on Indian shores. This is, in fact, the second animated feature, and fifth major feature co-produced by the house of mouse over the last five years. The last animated feature we saw was the charming, though rudimentary, Roadside Romeo, which tanked at the box office in spite of the...

The trailer for Utv Motion Pictures first animated feature since their acquisition by Disney is set to release and we have the trailer here.
Arjun: The Warrior Prince is a mythological action adventure where we follow Arjun from a young boy to the legendary warrior that he became.
A teaser was released a few months ago but this is the first full trailer we get to see and funnily enough the character design seems very similar to that other religious animated movie by rival animation studio Dreamworks. The movie seems to be a mix of 2D styled characters on a 3D background which seems to feel a bit of an odd sense but usually these shots get refined closer to release (Remember how weird the first shots of the Hulk were in the first Avengers trailer?)

Us-Indian co-productions have performed dismally – but Bollywood's need for global expertise could reverse the trend
When WikiLeaks went public with diplomatic cable 248355 last April, it revealed that even the Americans weren't too optimistic about their chances of breaching one of the last bastions against them: "Unfortunately, all of the joint Hollywood-Bollywood productions released thus far have been unsuccessful at the box office, signalling that a successful entry into Bollywood is not easy," some unsparing bureaucrat had written. Perhaps there was also a note of admiration there, for another country with a formidable popular cinema (about a 90% share of its own market), and a deep resistance to watching anything foreign.
But Hollywood isn't quitting yet. This week sees the release in India and the UK of the latest Hollywood wolf in Bollywood clothing, 20th Century Fox's Ekk Deewana Tha. A glossy-looking romantic drama with a pair of extremely winsome leads in...

India's animators are hoping that a film starring two of Bollywood's biggest stars will revive the sector's fortunes, after earlier efforts to popularise the cartoon genre fell flat.Ajay Devgn and his wife Kajol appear in "Toonpur Ka Superrhero" (eds: correct) (Toontown Superhero), whose combination of real-life actors and cartoon characters recalls the Oscar-winning film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" from 1988.Box office success for the film, which is released on Friday, Christmas Eve, could spur more studios to finance home-grown animation projects, analysts say."The coming of mainstream actors in Bollywood is a big boost to the industry," said Andrew Gonsalves, from Animation Reporter magazine. "This will help the industry a big way as more projects will now take off."Indian-made animation feature films were touted as the next big thing in 2005, as studios looked to utilise a vast pool of technical...

The House of Mouse has been poking its tail into various international markets for years now, but only very recently has India become a place of interest. In 2008, Disney co-produced Yash Raj's computer animated Hindi film Roadside Romeo, which was not a tremendous hit, but proved to be the best that Indian animation had produced until that point. Earlier this year, Disney tried out the Hindi market again with Do Dooni Chaar starring 70's Bollywood legend Rishi Kapoor and his wife Neetu. The film was well received by critics, however, it too died a quiet death at the box office. Earlier this year we previewed yet another Hindi film, the child superhero film Zokkomon, which was due to release in May, but has completely disappeared off of the radar, and all I can find is that it was still shooting back in June. So far, Disney are 0 for 3, but...

I love Rajni. If you click on my byline, that should become obvious. I did not know until recently, however, that his talents are genetic. About 3 years ago Soundarya Rajnikanth, the Superstar's daughter, began work with Dad on Sultan: The Warrior, a 3-D animated period epic starring a CG version of the big guy and scored by frequent collaborator, A.R. Rahman, who is currently touring the USA. There isn't a whole lot of info on this movie out there. They've been working on it for a while, but the failure of Disney/Yash Raj Films Roadside Romeo made all of the studios wary of putting big budget animated films in cinemas in India. Apparently, that wariness is wearing off.
Sultan is billing itself as India's Biggest 3D Animated Feature Film. They wear that title with honor. The latest news is that Soundarya, who has previously worked in much smaller capacities...

One of last years great independent film stories was Nina Paley's Sita Sings the Blues, which is a modified retelling and exploration of the Ramayana, one of Hinduism's sacred texts. While that was made almost exclusively by one person, a remarkable feat especially considering the output, it has taken a team of animators 5 years to create this more faithful retelling of the classic story of Rama, Sita, and Ravana. Ramayana: The Epic is also an animated feature, and probably one of India's most ambitious projects in this realm. Following the tanking of Roadside Romeo in 2008, tons of animated projects were shelved in favor of more profitable masala offerings. According to Business Standard, films like Avatar, Ice Age 3, and other animated features have gotten a great response in India, and as such, they've shot back onto the money men's radars.

The Walt Disney Company is increasing its Indian film production. According to news reports, Disney plans to make 14 new films in India for the Indian market, and it's branching out beyond Bollywood with its next release—a Telugu-language fantasy-adventure film, scheduled to hit theaters early next year.
Disney is one of several Hollywood studios trying to tap the enormous Indian movie market. About four billion movie tickets are sold annually in India, a country of 1.2 billion people. Since Hollywood films capture as small a market share in India as foreign films do in the U.S., American studios have tried beating Bollywood at its own game by opening production houses in India and making their own Hindi-language films with local directors and actors. Those efforts have largely failed, critically and commercially, including Disney's animated 'Roadside Romeo' (2008), Sony's 'Saawariya' (2007), and Warner Brothers' 'Chandni Chowk to China'...

For Disney India's second outing is Zokkomon, an upcoming Hindu live action flick with a superhero theme starring child actor Darsheel Safary in the lead and Satyajit Bhatkal in his directorial debut.

This is the story of Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol) who studied in St. Xavier's College. Anjali being a tomboy got along very well with Rahul and the other boys - Rahul being her best friend. Being so close to each other,...

Yash Raj Films has never been known for getting aggressive when it comes to the promotion of their films. However, they changed their strategy in 2008 when they heavily promoted ‘Tashan’, ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ followed by ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. While ‘Tashan’ tanked (for all the right reasons), the other two went on to be successful at the box office. In the same year, Yash Raj Films also had ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ and ‘Roadside Romeo’. Perhaps the production house was aware.

Believe it or not but in his only release of the year so far, Saif Ali Khan has delivered a box office disaster. Incidentally this is his fourth box office failure in a row over last 12 months, what with Roadside Romeo (where he did the voiceover), Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Tashan being mighty flops in themselves.
Ok, so let’s reveal the suspense. This film in question is Sanam Teri Kasam, an age old project featuring Saif Ali Khan in lead along with Saif Ali Khan, which was revived a few days back and has expectedly went completely unnoticed. In fact majority of cast and crew members.
