During the cafe scene, Cat, a background player, made little birds out of yarn to pass the time. She asked if she could drop one on the table to "Morgan" as she crossed, the director liked the idea and incorporated the little birds into the rest of the film.
Gordon standing with his pitchfork is an homage to Grant Wood's painting, American Gothic.
