The $28.5m eight-part series will serve as a sequel to the 1981 hit film.
Bavaria Film and Sky Deutschland are developing an international high-end TV series based on the books Das Boot and Die Festungfrom Lothar-Günther Buchheim.
The $28.5m (€25m) Das Boot – The Series, which will have an international cast, is conceived as a sequel to Wolfgang Petersen’s 1981 hit film (which also counted Bavaria as a producer).
It will pick up from events at the end of the film. The crew of the U 96 returns to La Rochelle in 1942 and is exposed to a severe air raid on the submarine harbour. A portion of the crew is killed.
The series focuses primarily on the German perspective of the brutal submarine warfare that takes place from 1942 onward. The point of view expands to also include the French Resistance and the Allied Forces on both land and sea.
The 8 x 60’ series is expected to begin airing internationally in 2018 across...

Featuring “Like Crazy” up-and-comer Felicity Jones alongside Julia Ormond and German actor Sebastian Koch ("The Lives of Others"), the British indie film "Albatross" possesses a pretty impressive cast, especially considering the director Niall MacCormick (U.K. TV and BBC films "The Song of Lunch," "Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley" and "Wallander") is making his feature film debut. But the true shining star here, the gem to watch for in the future, is the film’s lead, Jessica Brown Findlay (the British TV series “Downton Abbey”). Unfortunately, that’s about all the movie has to offer that feels fresh, inspired and genuine. MacCormick may have directed stars like Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Andrea Riseborough and more in the past, but the cloying, unfortunately sentimental tone and predictable story beats in "Albatross" don’t do this familiar coming-of-age tale any...

Despite a note-perfect performance by Meryl Streep, the Margaret Thatcher biopic lacks much cutting edge
Poor Margaret Thatcher: her transformation into biopic drag queen is now complete. Daringly, screenwriter Abi Morgan and director Phyllida Lloyd have made a movie about Baroness Thatcher's flashback-riddled dementia while their subject is still alive. Britain's most important and controversial postwar prime minister has been recast – rather like Judi Dench's Iris Murdoch 10 years ago – into a bewildered old lady cherished in dramatic terms for her poignant vulnerability and decline, rather than for the mature achievements of her pomp. And, like the screen Iris, she is paired off with kindly Jim Broadbent.
Margaret is played with cunning and gusto by Meryl Streep, and it is a pious critical convention to praise performances like these on the grounds that they go beyond mere impersonation. I'm not entirely certain that Streep does go beyond mere impersonation,...

London – Andrea Riseborough, Tom Wlaschiha and Michael Sheen have signed to star in Amit Gupta’s debut feature, "Resistance," based on Owen Sheers' World War II novel.
Sheen, who earned a BAFTA nomination for his role in “The Queen,” has boarded to play a secret service agent in the adaptation of Sheers’ debut novel.
The movie is set in an alternative 1944 where Russia has fallen to Nazi Germany and the D-Day landings have failed. With Britain partly occupied by German forces, a group of Welsh villagers wake to discover that their husbands have mysteriously disappeared.
Riseborough, who earned a BAFTA TV nomination for her role in ”Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk To Finchley,” is signed to play a young farmer's wife whose husband is one of the missing men.

More Toronto coverage
Toronto -- Every film festival needs an "It Girl," and at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, that honor goes to Andrea Riseborough, who has become almost ubiquitous on the red carpet with three movies on display.
And while It Girls sometimes come and go quickly, in this case, the one in question appears to have real substance.
The 28-year-old U.K.-born Riseborough is no newcomer to the scene. A former member of the National Youth Theater, she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and has shuttled among film, TV and stage roles nearly nonstop ever since: She played a young Margaret Thatcher on the British TV production "Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley," held her own onstage opposite Kenneth Branagh in Chekhov's "Ivanov," and popped up in Mike Leigh's 2008 film "Happy-Go-Lucky."
