Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features Fourteen matches, though we also get some of Aew’s bigger stars on the show, which makes up for the ridiculous amount of matches Imho. Anyway, on with the review…
Match #1: Action Andretti def. Tony Deppen
My Thoughts: Action Andretti continues his winning streak in this opening match, though why Deppen was allowed to get as much offence as he did – especially against the guy that beat Chris Jericho in his debut. Still, a great start to this week’s Dark.
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Evil Uno def. J. Spade
My Thoughts: Evil Uno’s turning to the dark side continues… I sincerely hope this new vicious streak continues and we get a stronger, more dominant Dark Order too. Shame the audience wasn’t into this one though.
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #3: Parker Boudreaux def.

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features thirteen(!) matches which -like last week – immediately fills me with dread… Anyway, on with the review.
Match #1: Matt Sydal def. Slim J
My Thoughts: So we’re getting Matt Sydal back with Top Flight And adding Ar Fox to the mix as well? That would certainly seem the case after the end of this match. I hope this “feud” with the Trustbusters doesn’t drag out too long. Mainly because Trustbusters are a waste of time Imho. Still, you have to appreciate how good this match was!
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Julia Hart def. Devlyn Macabre
My Thoughts: Evil Julia Hart does bad things… In a squash match once again., which will come as no surprise to anyone – especially given the House of Black’s dominance in Aew.
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #3: The Workhorsemen def.

Welcome back to another review of Aew Dark: Elevation, which features seven matches on the card And is the 100th episode of the show… however we get no celebration, no rejoicing, just another YouTube show with regulars Paul Wight and Matt Menard on commentary, joined once again by Roh’s Ian Riccaboni. So let’s get into the review!
Match #1: Red Velvet def. Billie Starkz
My Thoughts: What a cracking start to this week’s Elevation. Red Velvet and Billie Starkz put on a great competitive match that made Bille Starkz look good in defeat and was a great showcase for Red Velvet – who’s surely going to be the one to, given recent events, dethrone Jade Cargill? Loved this one.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Dark Order (John Silver and Alex Reynolds) def. The Workhorsemen (Jd Drake and Anthony Henry)

Welcome to this week’s review of Aew Dark: Elevation, we’re back to just Mark Henry and Paul Wight on commentary and this week’s show is another short card, featuring 6 matches this week. Let’s get right into the action!
Match #1: Ethan Page def. Jd Griffey
My Thoughts: Griffey had a decent showing here in this quasi-squash match, but this one was Ethan Page’s to lose. It’s good to see Page actually wrestling on Aew television and not just cutting promos. Maybe now Scorpio Sky has the TNT Title spotlight that some of the spotlight will rub off on Page. Here’s Hoping!
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Roh Women’s Title Match – Mercedes Martinez def. Hyan
My Thoughts: Mercedes Martinez gave Texas local Hyan a Lot of room here. It even looked like she was doing Hyan’s moves for her at one point!

Match #1: Bear Bronson def. Brandon Cutler
My Thoughts: This was the usual Brandon Cutler match. A squash but one that saw Cutler up to his usual antics and comedy wrestling style. Unfortunately for Cutler Bear Bronson took this one a bit more seriously and got the quick win.
My Score: 1.5 out of 5 Match #2: Brody King def. Alex Reynolds
My Thoughts: Another quick squash match for Elevation as Brodie King. Well it wasn’t a Total squash, with Reynolds at least getting some good offence in against the more powerful Brody King. And it was power that won the day here.
My Score: 1.5 out of 5 Match #3: Anna Jay and Yuka Sakazaki def.

As a familiar face to Ring of Honor fans, it’s no surprise that when Willow Nightingale answers the Champ Champ Challenge, she chooses to challenge for the Roh Women’s World Title. It’s time for this week’s review of Aew: Dark, which once again comes from Aew Universal and, surprisingly, features an appearance by the Young Bucks… On Dark?! What’s going on? The Bucks taking a walk down memory lane? Let’s take a look.
Match #1: The Young Bucks & Brandon Cutler def. Dark Order
My Thoughts: This was a great opening match with both teams looking good. Cutler did his usual goofy stuff and Still got the pin. You knew Dark Order weren’t going to win this one but Cutler getting the pin? Really?! Still, a really good match to open Dark. Still weird seeing the Bucks wrestle at Universal Studios again though…
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Ruby Soho def. Ashley D’Amboise

With the Christmas holiday hitting later this week, Tuesday is looking to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases. Scream Factory has put together a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for The Vampire Lovers and Tempe Video is showing some love to a trio of overlooked micro-budget genre flicks from the 1990s: Kingdom of the Vampire, Zombie Cop, and Humanoids from Atlantis. Other releases for December 21st include Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and Roh.
Humanoids from Atlantis
Faced with a prolonged bitter Ohio winter in March 1992 and a distributor release date just weeks away, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) had no choice but to toss out the majority of his “Humanoids From Atlantis” screenplay and have the cast and crew make it up as they went along. The result is a complete cinematic abomination that has to be seen to be believed, but strangely...

Ahead of its release to select theaters, Virtual Cinema, VOD & Digital on October 29 from Film Movement, we have an exclusive look at Roh:
"Cut off from civilization, a single mother puts her children on high alert when they bring home a strange young girl caked in clay. She tells of spirits and spirit hunters and after spending the night she delivers an ominous prophecy: the family will all soon die. As strangers begin to show up on her doorstep, and terrible events crop up around them, she quickly finds another reason to fear the forest. This eerily atmospheric folk horror tale marks the stunning directorial debut of seasoned visual effects artist, Emir Ezwan. From the ominous lighting, off-kilter tone, isolated locations and strange goings on, Roh is a visceral, spine-tingling revelation."

Though horror movies have increasingly gravitated toward jump scares and computer-generated FX, often the genre’s most unsettling exercises eschew such tricks for quiet, unadorned menace. That’s certainly the case with “Roh,” which was Malaysia’s submission for the best international feature Oscar last year. Belatedly getting released to U.S. virtual cinemas, VOD and digital formats on Oct. 29, .
After a wordless opening sequence in which we see her incongruously presiding over some fiery nocturnal burial rite, a filth-covered, knife-clutching little girl (Putri Nurqaseh) wanders from the jungle to a small hut. There, husband-abandoned Mak (Farah Ahmad) lives with teenage daughter Along (Mhia Farhana) and younger son Angah (Harith Haziq). They take in the stray, assuming she got lost on an outing and needs returning to a village across the river. But once this wraithlike wee visitor finally speaks, she says, “When the moon is full, all of you will die,...

Together, the lockdown drama from Bleecker Street, opens on 250 screens this weekend in a specialty market treading water and with little visibility on box office amid daily Covid headlines.
The trend continues of specialty films going wider faster and narrowing the window from theatrical to VOD in a nod to the chunk of its audience, mainly older, that feels more comfortable watching at home. The market is looking to a stream of fall product ahead of awards season, hoping the virus is more contained by then. Some good news offset the march of the Delta Variant this week as the Fda granted full approval to the Pfizer vaccine – shots in arms being key to an accelerated theatrical revival.

Thom Yorke has released a new remix of Radiohead classic “Creep.” The new slowed-down rendition is called “Creep (Very 2021 Rmx).”
Aptly living up to its namesake, the remix slowly unfurls over the course of nine minutes. It’s fitting for our pandemic era, where a sense of time is warped and singular moments can seem both fleeting and drawn out simultaneously. Woozy synths and reverb enhance the feeling of discombobulation and uncertainty. The song’s accompanying video features artwork from Jun Takahashi.

“Sexual Drive,” a Japanese film about desire which premiered at January’s Rotterdam film festival, will be released in North America, following a licensing deal between sales agent Fortissimo Films and local distributor Film Movement. The deal was agreed following the recent European Film Market.
Film Movement plans to show “Sexual Drive” at other festivals and also release it theatrically this year. That will be followed by release on all home entertainment and digital platforms. The company has rights for the U.S. and Canada.
Directed by Yoshida Kota, the film is a triptych about sex, aphrodisiac foods and secret desires. The stories track three people; a designer in a sexless marriage, a stricken office worker preparing to reenter the workplace; and an ad executive who wants to break off his existing relationship. In each segment a shabby man appears and reveals a challenging secret that may reinvigorate their love lives.

The Hong Kong International Film Festival has unveiled a familiar lineup of titles, talks and retrospectives for its 45th edition, which will return to its normal springtime slot after disruptions last year caused by the coronavirus.
“For the first time in our history, we will be presenting a hybrid festival consisting of both in-theatre and virtual screenings and events. While our belief in watching films communally on a big screen is unwavering, recent lockdowns and social distancing measures have accelerated our need to explore uncharted waters by embracing an additional online component,” said Hkiff Society executive director Albert Lee.
“The program is well balanced and covers a broad spectrum, from rarely-seen silent classics to contemporary filmmakers’ latest work. I am particularly thrilled to note that the festival will open with two significant Hong Kong films for the first time in recent years. So much for the talks of the demise of Hong Kong cinema!

Shortlists to be announced on February 9.
The Academy on Thursday (January 28) published a list of 93 films eligible for international feature film Oscar category.
Algeria’s Heliopolis, about the brutal suppression by French colonial authorities of an uprising in 1945, is omitted from the list. Screen understands the national selection committee withdrew the submission.
There were also a record number of documentary submissions – 238 compared to the previous high of 170 – in light of amended eligibility rules this season due to the pandemic, and a reduced field of 27 animation contenders.

Jonny Greenwood, the guitarist and backbone of Radiohead, is slated to score Spencer, Pablo Larraín’s upcoming film starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana.
As Indiewire reports, Spencer is set over the course of a weekend in December 1991, as Princess Diana spends Christmas with the royal family and ultimately decides to leave Prince Charles. The film is aiming for a fall 2021 release, just before the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death in August 2022.
Greenwood has been composing scores for nearly two decades, beginning with 2003’s Bodysong that doubles as his solo debut.

Although contemplative in spirit, “Anima” gives this sense of urgency that comes with the awareness of how inevitable and grave are the implications of its matter. The action may be set in the 80s, but the environmental issues the movie addresses grow bigger by the day in the contemporary world. And Cao Jinling makes our relationship with nature the focal point of her impressive debut. With an academic background in literature and a previous experience in scriptwriting, the director envisions this relevant subject through immensely symbolic reflection. Thus, it is not a documentary-like tale, but a story with a heart and soul, in which the “deforestation process” isn’t just a clinical fact, but something indissolubly bound with the lives and fates of certain people.

Radiohead launched a series of digital holiday greeting cards via their online Public Library.
Fittingly for the band responsible for “Fitter Happier,” these digital notes are more unsettling than generically festive. The outside design options are “Fa LA LA,” “LA-la,” LA, LA,” LA” and “Laa,” and the inside choices include “Everything Is Rosy,” “Peace On You,” “In Lieu Of Emptiness,” “Hope For The Future” and “Sunlit Uplands Still Await.”
The band detailed the project on the site, writing, “This festive card is for you to make and send to acquaintances new and old.

29 of the contributors of Asian Movie Pulse from America, Europe and Asia have voted the 25 Best Films of 2020, resulting in what we consider a great selection, despite the difficulties the current year presented to both the shooting and the availability of new movies. In that regard, the list includes films from Malaysia, Japan, Iran. S. Korea, Kazakhstan, Singapore, China, and Taiwan while crime thrillers, animations, shorts, LGBT, comedies, horror, black-and-white and even “quarantine movies” have found a place.
Without further ado, here are the best Asian films of 2020, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2019, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them, after an intense fight that lasted for 150 nights (give or take) and ended up with even more victims

The Cairo Film Festival kicks off its 42nd edition Wednesday as a mostly physical event with the Middle East premiere of Florian Zeller’s adaptation of his hit stage play “The Father,” for which co-writer Christopher Hampton and actor Rufus Sewell are expected in attendance.
“I think it’s one of the best films of the year,” fest president Mohamed Hefzy tells Variety. “We felt that the way the subject (dementia) is treated is extremely humane and very cinematic,” he added, noting that “Father” is a great opener since it is “a very accessible film for a broader audience.”
The socially-distanced opening ceremony of the grande dame of the Arab world’s fests will take place in the Cairo Opera House’s open-air theater, which is being called The We Theater, where other expected attendees will include Russian master Alexander Sokurov (“Russian Ark”), who is presiding over this year’s main jury,...

Creepy horror film “Impetigore” by hotshot director Joko Anwar has been selected by Indonesia as its national representative in the Academy Awards’ best international feature film category.
The news was announced by the Indonesian Academy Awards Selection Committee on Tuesday. Anwar quickly retweeted the information, adding: “Hopefully this film can be a good representation and raise the international audiences’ interest in Indonesian films.”
The film, which premiered at the Sundance festival in January this year, tells the story of two women who are not making a great success of big city life, and who return to their home village. While promised an inheritance there, they encounter numerous strange events.
“Impetigore” stars Marissa Anita, Tara Basro, Christine Hakim and Asmara Abigail, who was last year named as an Asian Star Up Next by Variety and the International Film Festival and Awards Macao. The film is handled in the U.S. by Shudder.

Reports have emerged that Paul Thomas Anderson’s ninth movie, a comedy-drama set in the 1970s in the San Fernando Valley, is moving from Focus Features to MGM. While MGM declined to comment to IndieWire on the report that first emerged in Deadline, the production is said to be leaving Universal-owned specialty label Focus Features, which propelled Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 romantic drama “Phantom Thread” to six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. The move is said to be a part of rebranded MGM’s interest in auteur-driven films.
The untitled upcoming project is still in pre-production, though Anderson is said to have finished writing the movie, which revolves around a high school student who is also an exchange student. It will be the fourth film that Paul Thomas Anderson has set in the San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles area where “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” and “Punch-Drunk Love” unfolded in glorious color.
