Last year, Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. That was the 69th anniversary – and since this year marks the 70th anniversary of the original film, Godzilla Minus One is returning to theatres this weekend, with screenings starting on November 1st. There’s also a black & white version of Godzilla Minus One that’s called Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, and that version of the film is also returning to theatres for this celebration. To see if Godzilla Minus One and/or Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will be showing near you this weekend, check out the Tickets.Godzilla website.
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One sees an already devastated postwar Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla.

"There's no way to stop it." The big radioactive lizard is back! Again! Japan's Toho is planning another 2024 re-release of this beloved, Oscar-winning, monster movie mega-hit Godzilla: Minus One. The re-release is part of the 70th Anniversary of Godzilla celebrations (more info here), because the original Gojira movie opened in Japan on November 1st way back in 1954. So this is also re-releasing on November 1st in the US as well - after a successful run last winter. Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki directed this epic action sci-fi - starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Kuranosuke Sasaki. Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb. The movie originally opened in Japan last November and in the US in December, becoming a hit worldwide before...

There isn’t an anime that looks or feels quite like A Few Moments of Cheers . We’ve witnessed a rise in CG anime productions from Japan, including companies like Studio Orange with series like Trigun Stampede , alongside major movie releases like Stand By Me Doraemon and Lupin III: The First . Yet the debut of the original production from 100studio, in partnership with the artist collective Hurray! Team and director Popreq (who has worked on Yorushika music videos and the Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie ending theme animation), is truly something special: a production that stands apart from others both for its unique creation process and the story it’s sharing with the audience. This film is dedicated to the people who wish to create and share their work with the world. A Few Moments of Cheers centers on Kanata Asaya, a high school student and artist who loves to produce animated music videos,...

"Godzilla Minus One" is one of the best movies of the year. This is a film that takes the King of Monsters back to basics, ignoring the other kaiju in the Tohoverse and instead doing kind of a retelling of the very first "Godzilla." Except it doesn't feel like just a remake, but a return to form. Hideaki Anno gave the franchise new life with his satirical 2016 film "Shin Godzilla," which focused more on the chaotic and often wacky reactions to Godzilla invading modern-day Japan. Now, director, writer, and VFX director Takashi Yamazaki ("Lupin III: The First") takes us back in time and makes Godzilla once again a source of pure terror and a not-at-all-subtle allegory for nuclear armageddon.
Yamazaki reinvents the titular Godzilla in fascinating ways. He adds his own touch to the iconic character's nearly 70-year history by turning Godzilla's atomic breath into a devastating weapon of mass...

"Godzilla Minus One" is not only one of the best movies of the year, but one of the best "Godzilla" movies ever, with /Film's own Witney Seibold saying in his review that it includes "some of the best, most exciting destruction visuals in the franchise's long history."
The film follows in the footsteps of Hideaki Anno's "Shin Godzilla" in reinventing the king of monsters, but it also looks back at the very origins of the franchise. The result is a movie that gives us a human story as compelling and thrilling to watch as Godzilla wreaking havoc. This is a monster that is utterly terrifying, and one with an upgraded power move that is closer to the imagery of nuclear armageddon than anything in this 70-year franchise — making it a pseudo "Oppenheimer" sequel.
Director Takashi Yamazaki brings to "Godzilla Minus One" the same energy and the same great eye...

Yesterday we learned that Godzilla Minus One, the latest Godzilla movie from Toho, has been given a PG-13 rating for its release in the United States, a rating it earned due to creature violence and action. Now a new TV spot for the film has arrived online, and you can check that out in the embed above. The film is set to be released in Japan on Godzilla Day this year, November 3, 2023. It will then receive a nationwide release in the United States on December 1st.
Toho will be bringing Godzilla Minus One to the states in its original Japanese version, with English subtitles.
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One will see an already devastated postwar Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla. Interestingly, one of Yamazaki’s previous credits is the 2007 film Always: Sunset on Third Street 2, which features a Godzilla cameo in a fantasy sequence.

Nearly 70 years ago, monster movies changed forever with the introduction of Godzilla. The Japanese prehistoric monster awoke from its slumber in 1954 to terrorize villagers from Odo Island, announcing its presence with loud, lumbering footsteps and a bone-chilling roar. Since the original "Godzilla," kaiju movies have become a subgenre all their own, populated by epic monsters like Mothra and Ghidorah, with regular installments that range from corny to incredible.
In recent years, Hollywood has gotten in on the Godzilla game with Legendary Pictures' own spin on the world of giant monsters. But as exciting as it is to watch Kyle Chandler, Brian Tyree Henry, and Millie Bobby Brown face off against Godzilla, Japanese studio Toho (home to the vast majority of Godzilla flicks ever made) has something even more thrilling up its sleeve: a movie that looks poised to recapture the post-war terror of the beloved original. "Godzilla Minus One" is still a few months away,...

"In postwar Japan, a new terror rises; Godzilla. Will the devastated people be able to survive... let alone fight back?" Here we go!! The big ol' monster is back for more mayhem. Toho in Japan has unveiled an epic new trailer for Godzilla Minus One (or Godzilla -1.0) and it looks awesome. It's sort of a follow-up to Hideaki Anno's Shin Godzilla (from 2016), while also an original creation telling a whole new story. Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki is directing the new movie, which will be the 30th live action movie in Toho's own kaiju franchise. It was filmed under the working title Blockbuster Monster Movie (超大作怪獣映画), co-produced by Robot Communications and Toho Studios. The concept is that it's set in post-war Japan, which puts the country at "0.0", and then Godzilla shows up, pushing them even further into "-1.0". This has some gnarly shots in it, and the action looks incredible,...

This is the year of Godzilla. We recently got the first images of the upcoming Apple TV+ MonsterVerse show that pits both Kurt and Wyatt Russell against the King of Monsters. There's also the upcoming "Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire" that is set to bring round two of the match of the century next year. Arguably, though, the headliner is the return of Toho's own Godzilla in "Godzilla Minus One," the first since "Shin Godzilla" seven years ago.
"Shin Godzilla" was a phenomenal reimagining of the iconic monster, with Hideaki Anno making an incredible movie that brought the King of Monsters to modern times, making it an allegory for the response to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster —all while giving us an incredible redesign for the character.
Now, Takashi Yamazaki, director, writer, and VFX supervisor is helming "Godzilla Minus One." Yamazaki is no small name either, having helmed a series of VFX-heavy blockbusters,...

Sixth-grade elementary school students Kazuki, Taichi, and Sunny have a “wish” they really hope would come true. The boys pray earnestly at the shrine. Suddenly, the wish-granting “Ghost Book” resonates with them and gives them a test. Guided by the magic of the Ghost Book, the boys and their homeroom teacher, Ms. Yohko, wander into a different world where ghosts live. They try to escape through trial and error but it seems that by catching the ghosts and completing the book, their wishes will come true and they will then be able to escape from this world. Thus, the five work together to challenge the scary ghosts and hope to make their wish come true. [Sources: Jfdb and Far East Films]

This marks the fourth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Animated Feature.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.

A week ago, the race for the Best Animated Feature Oscar seemed as if it could have the smallest field of entries in years. Only 13 films were in the online screening room devoted to the category, although some significant contenders were clearly going to be added, Pixar’s “Soul,” Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” and Gkids’ “Earwig and the Witch” among them.
But on Friday, Jan. 15, voters in the category awoke to find that the size of the race had essentially doubled. Instead of 13 films in the screening room, there were 27, with the newcomers including not just “Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” and “Earwig and the Witch,” but also films from Denmark (“Dreambuilders”), Poland (“Kill It and Leave This Town”), Latvia (“My Favorite War”), South Korea (“Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs”) and India (“Bombay Rose”), as well as a Croatian movie with the intriguing and confounding title “Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Water Rebus.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in this year’s Oscar race, with the ceremony pushed back until late April and an eligibility period that does not conform to a calendar year. And yet the studio release slate for some of its biggest 2020 titles have shuffled so many times that many have wondered if there will even be enough viable Oscar contenders. We assure you there will be, but it won’t be the films listed here, which removed from 2020’s box office and could have a chance for 2022’s awards. And there’s still a few more movies opening late this year and in early 2021 that if, if moved, could shake up the race even further.

When Japanese VFX-wizard-turned-director Takashi Yamazaki (“Dragon Quest: Your Story”) tackled “Lupin III: The First” (GKids), the first CG movie in the Monkey Punch Anime franchise, he turned for inspiration to the great Hayao Miyazaki. After all, Miyazaki cut his feature teeth on the franchise’s “The Castle of Cagliostro” (1979), which was Yamazaki’s ’80s introduction to Miyazaki. And, for good measure, Miyazaki continued to make his mark on master thief Lupin by directing two influential TV episodes the following year: “Wings of Death: Albatross” and “Farewell My Beloved Lupin.”
The Oscar-winning Miyazaki (“Spirited Away”) humanized the stylish Lupin in “Cagliostro” by making him a gallant hero as well, rescuing a princess in distress on the way to seizing his treasure.
