Bárbara Paz had extensive singing lessons to perform the title theme. Producers also wanted her to perform other themes, but Paz had no interest in a singing career. She was also trained in juggling for the role.

Silvio Santos wanted to make Bárbara Paz a Brazilian counterpart of Thalía. Paz starred and performed the title theme mirroring Thalia's acting and singing stardom on María Mercedes (1992), Marimar (1994) and Humble Maria (1995).
Originally titled "Maria Mercedes", like the original María Mercedes (1992). The title was changed on Silvio Santos's request - after filming had already commenced. Thus, several scenes had to be reshot.
