After the release of 2014’s Annie, in which Cameron Diaz played Miss Hannigan, Diaz took a break from acting. By 2018, when she reunited with her co-stars from The Sweetest Thing for an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she described herself as “retired,” and stayed that way for the next several years — until now. Today sees the release of Back in Action, a straight-to-Netflix feature film that lured Diaz back onto a film set. At an event in October, Diaz explained that she had stepped away from her professional career because she had to “reclaim” her life and that what she was “passionate” about at the time was building her family, but that she agreed to Back in Action to re-team with her Annie co-star: “I couldn’t say no to Jamie.”
I accept that as her official reason, but having watched the movie, I now think she took the part...

The recent controversy in Tinseltown features Blake Lively and her It Ends with Us co-star Justin Baldoni. Many prominent names in the industry have spoken up about the ordeal, and now, actress Abigail Breslin has apparently given her two cents on the whole matter. Best known for films like Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and My Sister’s Keeper (2009), she faced something similar to what Blake Lively is going through at the moment.

Abigail Breslin penned an emotional letter on social media regarding the double standard and harassment faced by women who deign to speak up about experiences of sexism or injustice in Hollywood, recalling a lawsuit filed by her employer after she addressed a male co-star’s “unprofessional behavior” on set. The Little Miss Sunshine actress heavily implied she was spurred to put forth a statement following the fallout from Blake Lively’s legal complaint against Justin Baldoni, the multi-pronged scandal that also recently moved Kate Beckinsale to detail her own industry experiences of assault and misogyny.
In a sizable essay shared to her Instagram and Tumblr, Breslin detailed being dismissed as a “hysterical and wild” woman who “apparently just had it in for men” after she had “taken all of the recommended, reasonable and appropriate measures of reporting confidentially to my union” what she had experienced on set. In an interview with People magazine about her new book “By Any Other Name,” author Jodi Picoult revealed her inspiration for the novel came from the “terrible experience” she had with the 2009 film adaptation of “My Sister’s Keeper.”
“It kind of goes back to when I had a really terrible experience turning ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ into a film,” Picoult said. “It took me a long time to kind of wrap my head around the fact that they didn’t ruin my book. My book is still there. And anyone who reads my book is still getting the story that I intended.”
“My Sister’s Keeper,” starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin, sits at a 47% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. However, former Variety film critic Justin Chang gave a glowing review upon its release in 2009, writing, “Unsubtle, uneven and undeniably effective, this take-no-prisoners cancer weepie poses a fascinating moral quandary — a girl...

The thought of losing a sibling is unfathomable to those of us who are fortunate to have them. Perhaps it’s my closeness with my sister that lends to my appreciation of media that represent sibling bonds impeccably. They can be at each other’s throats all the time, or they can be as close as we are, or an awkward, long-lost bunch who have to find their way to loving each other again—it’s a bond that is somehow palpable through it all. The title A Part of You immediately piqued my interest as I learned that it was a story about sisters. I went into the film completely blind, and it definitely didn’t go as I expected. The film explores the life of 17-year-old Agnes after her sister unexpectedly dies, leaving her to navigate life after tragedy all by herself. Immediately, the idea of this film...

Exclusive: Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins (Freud’s Last Session) has signed on to star in Bruno Penguin and the Staten Island Princess, the latest film from director Nick Cassavetes. Bruno spent his life trying to learn how to communicate with them and over time, the colonies grew to know him and return his fondness.

In 2022, Netflix released a live-action series based on the "Resident Evil" video games, just a few months removed from the "Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness" anime series for the streamer. Not to mention, Johannes Roberts' cinematic reboot, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City." That film came just four years after the end of Paul W.S. Anderson's mega-blockbuster film series starring Milla Jovovich, which ran concurrently with a series of unrelated animated films and many installments of the video game. This is all to say that "Resident Evil," as a property, has grown beyond just the games, and that the fandom has splintered off into a variety of directions and mediums. Trying to appease the whole of the "Resident Evil" community with an adaptation is at this point, impossible. Too many people want too many different things, and those differences are often in direct opposition to one another.

This look at the ethics of transplantation, starring Grammer as a surgeon, doesn’t wind up as tough-minded as it first appears
There’s something about organ-transplant movies that encourages sentimentality and wishy-washy melodrama; looking back to movies such as Return to Me or Seven Pounds or My Sister’s Keeper. But this one promises a more hard-edged look at the ethics, the compromises and the difficult choices. “The heart is just a muscle,” grunts top surgeon Andre Boxer, played by Kelsey Grammer. Boxer is a gruff, cheerless workaholic who smokes like a chimney and often looks terrible. It’s a bravely unflattering and un-Frasier-like role, though somewhat improbably, Boxer is sleeping with a colleague played by Julia Stiles, a good 25 years his junior.
The crux of the story is an urgent debate over who should receive a heart that has unexpectedly become available. Alongside Grammer and Stiles on the transplant...

The 82nd annual Academy Awards took place in March of 2010 and honored films released in the previous year, 2009. That year gave movie-goers a lot of great films including; The Proposal, My Sister's Keeper, Funny People, and The Time Traveler's Wife. None of those films received award nominations from the Academy that year.

The films who received the biggest nomination of the season for Best Picture were: The Hurt Locker, Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, Up, A Serious Man, and Up in the Air. This was the first time since 1944 that more than five films were nominated in this category, but even still, it seems the Academy left a few films out that may have deserved the nomination over some that did receive it.

The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.
