The story is a true story that films in the exact penthouse condo and films on the exact same sail boat that occurred in real life.
The sailboat used in the film was damaged in Hurricane Florence in 2018 and retains the broken mast. Producers were afraid another storm would critically damage the boat. As it happens, the following year Hurricane Dorian's winds blew the anchored boat into the waterway but amazingly, it was not damaged.
"The Penthouse" was filmed entirely on Carolina Beach, NC and all locations were within half a mile of one another.
Dennis Curran who plays Jerry the boatyard worker, had never acted before and was cast entirely on his look. The producer worked with him on how to learn lines and deliver them believably.
Nicholas Turturro's character Det. Martinez shares same name as his character on NYPD Blue.
