Dearly beloved," Maya Rudolph said, taking the stage last night at Austin's purple-lit Paramount Theatre, "we are gathered here to celebrate the one-of-a-kind, most brilliant, most special, most magical, most fucking incredible Prince Rogers Nelson. He was our hero. We loved him. And he has completely shaped our world. We're going to do this together, am I right?"
The Saturday Night Live veteran and musician Gretchen Lieberum had decided to forge ahead with their previously scheduled gig as the musical duo Princess – the pair's five-year-old Prince cover band – at the fifth annual Moontower Comedy Festival.

Compared to his massive discography, extensive collection of live bootlegs, and vaults full of tantalizingly unknowable gems, Prince's career on film is heartbreakingly short: Purple Rain (1984), Under the Cherry Moon (1986), Sign O' the Times (1987), and Graffiti Bridge (1990).
Of these, Purple Rain is the best known, as it accompanied Prince's public transition from dynamic entertainer to world-conquering star, and culminates with the legendarily histrionic performance of "Purple Rain." It also helped inspire Dave Chappelle's skit about Prince and basketball, an inexhaustible source of Prince-related laughter. But it's Sign O' the Times,...

Chanchassen, Minn. – One of rock’s most legendary and mysterious figures, whose full and real name was Prince Rogers Nelson, died on April 21st, 2016, after paramedics found him unresponsive at his Paisley Park home in Chanchassen, Minnesota. No cause of death has been given. The singer was 57 years old.
Prince was born in 1958, in Minneapolis, and received his royal moniker from his father, Prince Rogers, Sr. (he was a jazz musician, it was a stage name). He showed music aptitude even as a child, and in 1975 he formed the band 94 East with his cousin. Demo tapes resulted in representation at age 17, and led to his debut “For You” on Warner Bros. records in 1978. One year later, the self-titled “Prince” album was the follow up, and yielded his first national exposure with the songs “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Why You Want to Treat Me So Bad.”

As news of Prince’s death continues to ripple through the entertainment industry and his global fandom, the question of who will control his storied catalog of music hits loom large. Dozens of iconic albums including “Purple Rain,” “Dirty Mind” and “1999” were handed back to Prince by Warner Music two years ago after an 18-year stalemate sparked by an ugly public breakup between singer and label. But in 2014, Prince reunited with Warner Bros. Records. For that reason the beneficiary to his estate will eventually own the entirety of the icon’s music according to a 30-year-old piece of legislation called the Copyright Revision Act.

Music royalty has died. Prince, the massively influential and superlatively talented musician and personality, has died at 57. As complicated and strange as mourning a celebrity's death has become in 2016, it's especially fraught in the case of Prince, who for years fought a strangely noble war to keep his music offline. Recently, with the removal of his music from all online streaming services except Tidal, it's become nearly impossible to share his music, as a gesture of mourning or otherwise. So this is by no means a complete list of the Purple One's iconic performances, it's just the best ones that you can find.

Attention, Martin Shkreli: We might have found your next big-ticket music purchase. Three unreleased songs by Prince are being auctioned off as part of a larger collection of items related to the “Purple Rain” musician. The songs are contained on a cassette tape recorded in the 1970s. Along with the three unreleased songs, the tape contains three early versions of songs he would later release, including “an early, acoustic version of ‘So Blue,'”; an early version of “Gotta Broken Heart Again,” which would later appear on his “Dirty Mind” album; and “a very early, virtually unrecognizable version of ‘Sometimes It Snows.

Across the span of nearly four decades, Prince has released 34 studio albums, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and won an Oscar on top of seven Grammy Awards. In honor of his 57th birthday, THR rounds up the most memorable moments of the music icon's prolific career. 1. Dirty Mind (1980) The third studio album from Prince, Dirty Mind sparked controversy for its sexual themes and trademarked the singer's promiscuous music style. Two risque tracks on the album, "Head" and "Sister," tackled topics of oral sex and incestuous relationships. His following album, Controversy, would go on to stir public

Fear in a Handful of Dust: Van Hees Completes Trilogy with Dark Metaphor
Belgian director Pieter Van Hees completes his trilogy that began with 2008’s Left Bank, the thematically connected “Anatomy of Love and Pain,” with the third chapter, Waste Land, exploring the idea of ‘soul’ with a neo-noir tinged mystery concerning the unraveling of a relationship and the loss of love. So named for T.S. Eliot’s famed 1922 poem, Van Hees has crafted a surreal nightmare that contains some profound mutations concerning historical atrocities from Europe’s colonialist past, of which Belgium also figured into. A director whose previous titles haven’t been able to tap into the offbeat English speaking audiences that are sure to embrace his bizarre flavor, the international renown of star Jeremie Renier should afford Van Hees’ latest work a higher visibility.

Belgian director Pieter Van Hees is a slippery one. He made his feature debut with The Left Bank, a dark supernaturally charged thriller before moving on to clever action-comedy Dirty Mind. The tonal shift between the films was dramatic - and impressive - and made all the more surprising by the fact that Van Hees insists the two films, as different as they are, are the first two parts of a thematic trilogy that he completes now with Waste Land.An ultra dark crime thriller - think the recent wave of Nordic Noir, but grottier - Van Hees' latest is a selection of both Toronto and Fantastic Fest and while we missed the trailer when it first arrived a few days back we've spotted it now...

On this week’s Hump Day with Adam Lambert, we celebrate an historic anniversary.
Once again Adam was Mia on social media this week (although he did go grocery shopping). I think I know why! He’s obviously saving up all his energy for the Queen tour!
But we do have something to celebrate. Two years ago this week Adam released his history-making album Trespassing
To celebrate this Golden Anniversary (Yes, I know, two years is not gold, but it sounds better than “Cotton Anniversary”), let’s take a look back and pick our favorite song. Is your favorite still the same two years later? Have any of them lost their luster, or shining more brightly than ever?
To get the ball rolling, I’m going to go back to my original review, and review my reviews of each song.

Yeezus marks another twist in Kanye West's sound, away from the hip-hop/prog-rock fusion of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and the chipmunk soul of his early years toward electronic and lyrical brutalism. With typical hyperbole, West recently called himself "a Black New Wave artist," but it's hard to connect Yeezus to other musicians — Dirty Mind–era Prince, Grace Jones, Fishbone, Nona Hendryx, A.R. Kane, etc. — who could be said to fit that label. So what does it sound like? The album is anarchic and raw, stripped of sonic excess and yet also packed full of different musical allusions. Visceral hip-hop, damaged dance-music grooves, splashes of Jamaican dancehall, an industrial sense of menace — it's not exactly summer fun, but it is fascinating. If you find yourself communing with Kanye’s current state of mind, here are 30 albums for further exploration.1. Nina Simone, Pastel Blues (Philips, 1965)Nina Simone’s strange,...

The child of musicians (his mother was a singer, his father a bandleader), Prince (born June 7, 1958) was a precocious talent who had his first band at age 12 and, according to the notes to his second album, had learned to play 26 instruments before he was out of his teens. In fact, he made his first album as a teenager. He'd signed to Warner Brothers, which he picked because it was the only label that contractually agreed to let him self-produce. That's a pretty ballsy demand for a teenager to make; by comparison, the great Stevie Wonder only achieved that degree of production control after over a decade of being micromanaged by Motown. On that debut, For You, Prince plays and sings every note).

Questlove is co-teaching a course called "Classic Albums" this spring at Nyu's Tisch School of the Arts. Some records that the very busy, very wise Questo will scholarize include Led Zeppelin IV, Off the Wall, Paul's Boutique, Prince's Dirty Mind, and Aretha Franklin's Lady Soul. If you're looking for a little more from a concert film than Justin Bieber: Never Say Never gave you, then Glen has ten suggestions you might want to try...
With Bieber fever gripping the nation’s (and probably the world’s) multiplexes, as Never Say Never leads hordes of adoring fans to don 3D specs and bask in his glory, I thought I’d run through some of my favourite concert films. So here we go:
The Cramps: Live At Napa State Mental Hospital
Forget 3D. By staging a private show for the residents of a Californian mental institution, psychobilly punk band The Cramps came up with the ultimate concert film gimmick. The set is incredibly short, clocking in at around 30 minutes, is shot in grainy black and white, and its audio quality isn’t great, but Live At Napa State Mental Hospital remains a thoroughly engaging performance by the band’s strongest line-up.

For all his unknowable aloofness, Prince's raison d'etre boils down to the three word refrain of one of his signature songs: "Let's go crazy." No matter what genre he is bending (rock, funk, R&B, jazz, hip-hop) or what his current lyrical fixations are, Prince's music always has been about letting go of inhibitions. On Wednesday night (December 29), the 52-year-old music legend spent a little over two hours on stage at New York City's Madison Square Garden strutting, dancing and shredding through the most manic moments of his massive back catalog, unburdened by anything other than the need to move some hips and shake some asses.

A couple of years ago several new talents took the stage in the Flemish film scene. Films like Ex Drummer, Small Gods and Dirty Mind launched a new image for our movie industry, even landing us some international attention on foreign film fests. It's not just a passing hype either, as proven by Koen Mortier's second feature-length film. 22 Mei (22nd of May if you prefer the international title) turned into a challenging and stunning piece of cinema.

Fifteen year old Deborah wants to escape her dull suburb and enjoy the luring city of Antwerp. Her new eighteen year old friend Jennifer leads her into the sparkling downtown nightlife. When Jennifer admits she's an escort girl, Deborah is intrigued by what appears to be an easy way of getting cash. Under the alias Bo, she takes her first steps into a world she can't handle yet. The downward spiral leads her to cheap thrills, drugs and into a juvenile institution. To escape this spiral, Deborah can only count on herself.

Singer/guitarist's recent attention-grabbing comments weren't his first.
By Gil Kaufman
John Mayer
Photo: MTV News
John Mayer has a long-established reputation as a virtuoso guitar player and ladies' man. But it's one of Mayer's other prodigious talents, his tendency to say and tweet outrageous comments, that has landed the "Waiting on the World to Change" singer in hot water this week.
By now, you've probably read and/or heard about Mayer's instantly infamous Playboy interview, in which he used the N-word and made sexually charged references to famous exes Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.
Mayer quickly apologized for some of the comments he made in the interview, which also featured comments about black women and his " 'hood pass" that many have perceived as racist, including a number of prominent rappers. "I think it's time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews," Mayer said after the fact. "It...

[caption id="attachment_14903" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Dirty Mind"]/caption] Dirty Mind Directed by Peter Van Hees Left Bank director Peter Van Hees tries his hand at offbeat comedy in Dirty Mind, which centers around a conceit that seems promising on paper but winds up as the delivery system for a disappointingly familiar experience. Wim Helsem, impressive in his feature debut, stars as meek stuntman's assistant Diego, who seems to limp from job to job without leaving much of an impression while his more sociable brother Cisse (Robbie Cleiren) gets all the attention. When Cisse's arrogance laeds to injury, Diego steps in on a particularly dangerous stunt and winds up in the hospital. When he awakes, he only wants to be referred to as Tony T (aka TNT), and suddenly acts with an otherworldly sense of confidence and cocksureness. That's meant in the most literal sense possible, as he immediately sets his sights on one of his doctors, Janna (Kristine Van Pellicom...

Dirty Mind opens with a simple conceit of our reality - that the most complex of human experience can be traced back to simple chemical brain functions. It's a fascinating concept, especially for film, but it's also scary territory when trying to lay the groundwork for a narrative that's meant to be meaningful and matter. But it's an anchor the film gladly wears even as it piles on the dramatic weight. It never quite reaches where it's going, but it's achieved something in at least trying. The lowest on the totem pole, Diego (Wim Helsen), is laughed at on the job working with his confident, stunt man older brother Cisse (Robbie Cleiren). He's shy, struggles with a need for love he can't fulfill, and is generally walked upon by everyone until an accident sees him waking up in the hospital as Tony T - a brand new personality that comes complete with cockiness and catch-phrases. He...

Film festivals are often a conumdrum for me because I sometimes wonder how they get started and, more to the point, who picks the films that get shown at them. My problem is that the films selected for many of the festivals don’t usually seem all that appealing (at least to me) and are often a collection of “art for art’s sake” films overwhelmed by their own sense of self-importance.
Fortunately, I don’t have this problem with the Fantastic Fest in Austin, which runs from September 24th to October 1st. The films selected for this festival represent an eclectic mix of genres and filmmakers and what I consider to be some of the most interesting, innovative and creative films being produced today. Sure, they’re not all potential Hollywood blockbusters, nor are they for everyone, but they are all pretty much guaranteed to be interesting, entertaining and in their own way,...

Moving from Pieter Van Hees' great horror film Linkeroever to his next, the equally genre peripheral piece, Dirty Mind, I was really excited. A loser who gets in an accident and wakes up transformed into a stunt man? The possibilities are endless! I envisioned comedy galore, from simple accident shtick humor, ape'ing masculinity, and fart jokes to the holy grail itself, the ménage à trois. Yes, plenty of violence, sick humor, and sex, I was already salivating long before I ever got to see footage. Too bad it didn't work out like that. While there was occasional humor, the film ended up being a drama, and ultimately, a struggle between "Tony T's" conflicting old Jekyll and new Hyde personalities. To put it succinctly,...

A dark movie from the dark country of Belgium. Pieter Van Hees's beautifully shot debut feature is a story of horror that draws its power from slow build and unsettling suggestion. You don't get terror or slasher horror FX, but you do get great suspense and a thought provoking story. Think Polanski's Rosemarys Baby. The dark tone of the story is reflected in the atmospheric cinematography, and really hats off to lens man Nicolas Karakatsanis, who was responsible for the equally dark Small Gods which we reviewed back in Spring 2008. Left Bank was premiered in the USA at Fantastic Fest last September.
Marie (Eline Kuppens) is a dedicated track athlete. One day, she suddenly collapses due to an infection in her immune system,...

Confession time? Confession time.
On one of my first days at the recently completed Fantastic Fest I rode the guest shuttle to some screening or event or other with Belgian director Pieter Van Hees, who was there with his film The Left Bank, an arty little psychological thriller that I’d heard great things about and was looking forward to. As we got chatting about the film I was quick to assure him that I had it one my schedule and was planning on catching the first screening. And then, because I’m an idiot, I missed it. And then the next day we ended up riding on the bus together again. And Pieter offered to give me a screener of the film. No, no, I assured him, I’ll catch the second screening. And then, because I’m an idiot, I missed that one, too. So, sorry, Pieter, I...

We've been following Pieter Van Hees since finding out about the fantastic looking Belgian horror film he directed called Linkeroever (Left Bank) which by the way, is playing at the upcoming Fantastic Fest and yes, I should be getting a screener soon. Anyways, when I inquired when a trailer would be available for Dirty Mind, I figured it was about time to put up a piece on it, especially since there's now some nice stills showcasing the beautiful photography which is signature to Hees films, as well as the rest of his crew of Belgian filmmakers. "Shy loser Diego wakes up after an accident and has been transformed into Tony T. a smooth-talking no-holds-barred stuntman. Suffering from a case of Frontal Syndrome he's the perfect case-study for young neurologist Jaana. Everyone hopes that Diego will soon recover, accept for Diego himself." We should have a trailer in a couple of months,...
