His 1992 biopic Malcolm X, which features Denzel Washington as the titular civil rights activist and leader, is considered a cultural touchstone, particularly in Black cinema.

His film adaptation of Ron Stallworth's autobiographical book, Black Klansman: A Memoir, resulted in the Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman. Spike Lee spoke warmly of his long-time working relationship and friendship with Denzel Washington in a conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival on Tuesday.

Lee is currently in post-production on Highest 2 Lowest, his latest collaboration with Washington, and their fifth film together after Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game and Inside Man.

“Someone pointed out to me that the last time we worked together was 18 years ago. I was surprised because it didn’t feel that way. I’m very blessed to have done five films together, he is arguably the best actor on the planet,” he said.

Lee, who also cast Washington’s son John David Washington’s son in BlacKkKlansman, suggested he shared a special bond with the actor.

The film is inspired by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low,” he said, adding that Kurosawa has been a key inspiration for his career – from “She’s Gotta Have It” onward. In “High and Low,” an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom.

Lee said that attending NYU film school opened his eyes to filmmakers like Kurosawa, who introduced him to new approaches to story structure.

Daisy Ridley is ready to set her squeegee aside in favor of whichever weapon gets the job done in Cleaner, an action-packed thriller from director Martin Campbell. Quiver Distribution announced today that it has acquired North American rights to the Anton and Qwerty Films production Cleaner, set in, around, and on the side of one of the UK’s tallest buildings. Quiver will release the film in theaters on February 21, 2025.

Star Wars icon Daisy Ridley stars in Cleaner, based on a story she developed, alongside Clive Owen, who recently led the FX mini-series A Murder at the End of the World. The film takes Ridley and Owen into the dark heart of danger while innocent lives hang in the balance.

The latest Netflix documentary Cyberbunker: The Criminal Underworld uses all the tricks in the book to raise the stakes of the documentary and create the illusion of a gripping narrative, but in all honesty, it’s just obfuscation in the hope that people will find it interesting. The story is about a few rather odd individuals who came together to form a company Cyberbunker, that let websites host their data, even if the data was of criminal nature.

This simple idea for a whole documentary seems short of breath to run the course, which is why there has to be the ‘talking heads’ approach to the narrative. People sit in front of the camera, and like in a news report, the actual events are dramatized poorly.

The first pair of recipients will be directors Pedro Almodóvar and Spike Lee, both well-recognized lights of international filmmaking.

Hard to believe that a big star like Denzel Washington, who has an impressive filmography that features many audience favorites, only has been in one franchise in his career — The Equalizer series. Inside Man doesn’t count as the direct-to-Netflix sequel does not feature him. While the esteemed actor has starred in remakes, adaptations, and action movies prior, The Equalizer 2 became Washington’s first sequel. I don't remember what the first R-rated film I ever saw was. I know it was fairly early on, probably around age eight or nine, and it was not some plan I'd concocted to see one or anything like that. Sometimes you just happen upon an R-rated film as a kid, and even though I had parents who were fairly protective about what I watched growing up, that kind of thing just happens. I do vividly remember the first R-rated film I saw in a theater was: "V for Vendetta." I was 12 years old, and I can still picture the bargaining conversation between my dad, my uncle, my two years older cousin, and I about seeing it opening weekend in March 2006. I got to go, and one week later, we had the same conversation about Spike Lee's "Inside Man," which I also successfully went to. After that, the guardrails were off.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, Netflix is is hosting a 30th anniversary special for a very important pop culture franchise.

April 19 sees the arrival of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, a special that will celebrate 30 years of Power Rangers. This won’t just be your standard reunion show, however, but a full blown story in itself. Netflix’s description reads: “When Rita Repulsa returns, the Power Rangers are the only ones who can stop her! Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. Star Trek: The Next Generation's Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) is best known for her time on the USS Enterprise-d, but she's shown up on a surprising number of other Star Trek projects as well. Debuting in Tng's very first episode "Encounter At Farpoint," Troi was a half-human, half-Betazoid officer who primarily tended to the mental health of the ship's crew.
