Spike Lee’s remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 kidnapping drama High and Low will change the setting from the shoe industry to the far more glamorous music business — and A$AP Rocky will play “the main role,” Lee revealed to Deadline. Also starring in Highest 2 Lowest is Denzel Washington, who will play a successful businessman, a reimagined version of Toshiro Mifune’s part as a shoe-biz executive in the original.

Spike Lee reflects on the documentary that helped the FBI reopen a cold case. While the director excels at helming fictional features, such as Do The Right Thing and Inside Man, his most influential works always come down to non-fiction. His 1992 biopic Malcolm X, which features Denzel Washington as the titular civil rights activist and leader, is considered a cultural touchstone, particularly in Black cinema.
His film adaptation of Ron Stallworth's autobiographical book, Black Klansman: A Memoir, resulted in the Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman. Lee's next film will be Highest to Lowest, which is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low and will mark the fifth collaboration between him and Washington. However, recently, he revealed that he is most proud of the 1997 documentary that helped the FBI solve a case.

Spike Lee spoke warmly of his long-time working relationship and friendship with Denzel Washington in a conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival on Tuesday.
Lee is currently in post-production on Highest 2 Lowest, his latest collaboration with Washington, and their fifth film together after Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game and Inside Man.
“Someone pointed out to me that the last time we worked together was 18 years ago. I was surprised because it didn’t feel that way. I’m very blessed to have done five films together, he is arguably the best actor on the planet,” he said.
Lee, who also cast Washington’s son John David Washington’s son in BlacKkKlansman, suggested he shared a special bond with the actor.
“We’re brothers,” he said. “We just do our thing. We’re familiar with one another… our families are very tight.”

Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, BlacKkKlansman) took a brief break from his work as the president of the main competition jury at the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, sharing industry and career insights during an “In Conversation With” session and talking about being in post-production on his fifth film with Denzel Washington.
He calls his partnership with the actor “the dynamic Duo of D and Lee,” the legendary filmmaker told a crowd in Jeddah Old Town Al-Balad that was hanging on his every word amid growth in Saudi production activity and box office. “We are brothers. … We just do our thing.” Despite a long “gap” between working together, namely 18 years since Inside Man, he shared that it didn’t feel that way once they were on set. “We are familiar with each other. Also, our families are very tight.

Spike Lee spoke about his upcoming film “Highest 2 Lowest” – which will see the director reunite with lead actor Denzel Washington – during an on-stage talk Tuesday at the Red Sea Film Festival, where he is the president of the competition jury.
The film is inspired by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low,” he said, adding that Kurosawa has been a key inspiration for his career – from “She’s Gotta Have It” onward. In “High and Low,” an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom.
Lee said that attending NYU film school opened his eyes to filmmakers like Kurosawa, who introduced him to new approaches to story structure.

Spike Lee talks about how he saved his 1992 movie starring Denzel Washington when Warner Bros. turned down his request for more money. The iconic director has worked with Washington on four movies in total, starting with 1990's Mo' Better Blues. Their most recent collaboration as director and actor came in 2006's Inside Man, which starred Washington as an NYPD hostage negotiator dealing with a heist gone wrong.
Most recently, Washington has been making headlines and earning rave reviews for his performance in Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, where he plays scheming slave owner Macrinus. For his part, Lee hasn't released a feature film since 2020's Da 5 Bloods, but he has a number of projects in pre-production. Currently, he's looking back on perhaps his most fruitful collaboration with Washington, which opened to critical acclaim in 1992 and earned Washington an Oscar nomination.

Spike Lee gets candid regarding his Oscar losses, throwing some shade at awarded movies. Lee is best known as the director behind films such as Do The Right Thing (1989), Malcolm X (1992), Inside Man (2006), BlacKkKlansman (2018) and Da Five Bloods (2020). Though Lee is one of the most respected filmmakers in Hollywood, he's only won one Oscar in his career, taking home the Best Adapted Screenplay statue for co-writing BlacKkKlansman.
During a recent appearance on The Realest Podcast Ever, Lee speaks about his history with the Academy Awards, sharing some candid thoughts regarding both Do the Right Thing and BlacKkKlansman not winning Best Picture (the former wasn't even nominated). The director explains that, historically, some films that didn't win Best Picture end up being the films that are most remembered, and he uses Green Book as an example of a film that "no one's watching" now. Check out Lee's honest thoughts below:

Denzel Washington is renowned as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Acting since the late 1970s, Washington has been nominated for numerous Oscars for his acting work, winning awards for Glory and Training Day. An actor on both the stage and screen, Washington's career is characterized by his distinguished dramatic roles in works like Fences and Malcolm X. In more recent days, the beloved actor made a statement that suggested he might retire. Luckily for his fans, however, Washington later clarified that he would simply be more selective and continue more behind-the-scenes work, rather than retire completely.
In addition to his Oscar nominations, Washington has also been in a number of blockbuster films. Franchise-wise, this has notably included Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer trilogy. Those films have collectively made nearly $600 million at the worldwide box office, becoming a major contributor to Washington's overall box office. While this is Washington's main franchise draw,...

Denzel Washington recalls his bitterness over losing out on two Oscars, revealing that he stopped voting. Washington remains one of the most respected actors working in Hollywood today, appearing in popcorn hits and prestige awards fare. He can next be seen as part of the cast of Gladiator 2. Washington has been widely celebrated at various awards ceremonies, including the Academy Awards, winning two and being nominated for eight others since 1988's Cry Freedom.
In a recent piece he wrote for Esquire, recounting key moments of his life in his own words, Washington reveals that he didn't take two particular Oscar losses very well. He was nominated for both Malcolm X (1992) and The Hurricane (1999), losing to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman (1992) for the former and Kevin Spacy for American Beauty (1999) for the latter.

Jodie Foster's career has been famously wild. As a child, she appeared in lightweight Disney films like "Napoleon and Samantha" and "Freaky Friday," while also taking the world by surprise playing an underage sex worker in Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver." Throughout the 1980s, she successfully continued acting as she grew, appearing in films like "Foxes," "The Hotel New Hampshire," and "The Accused," for which she won her first Academy Award. In 1991, Foster won her second Oscar for playing FBI cadet Clarice Starling in Jonathan Demme's bleak serial killer thriller "The Silence of the Lambs," one of the few films to win "The Big Five" Oscars. That same year, Foster made her directorial debut with the child-prodigy drama "Little Man Tate."
From then on, Foster was a Hollywood staple, leading multiple high-profile studio dramas like "Maverick," Robert Zemeckis' "Contact," and "Anna and the King." She also worked with...

Netflix’s documentaries spawn quite a lot of memes, which revolve basically around their tendency to pick subject matters that may not fully lend themselves to a documentary. The latest Netflix documentary Cyberbunker: The Criminal Underworld uses all the tricks in the book to raise the stakes of the documentary and create the illusion of a gripping narrative, but in all honesty, it’s just obfuscation in the hope that people will find it interesting. The story is about a few rather odd individuals who came together to form a company Cyberbunker, that let websites host their data, even if the data was of criminal nature.
This simple idea for a whole documentary seems short of breath to run the course, which is why there has to be the ‘talking heads’ approach to the narrative. People sit in front of the camera, and like in a news report, the actual events are dramatized poorly.

Grieff's motive for killing his wife in Inside Man is likely revenge against his father-in-law, Gordon, who may have orchestrated the conflict between them. Grieff's deep hatred for Gordon and his desire to hurt him led him to cut off his wife's head and hide it as a way to inflict pain on him. While the exact reason for Grieff's actions is not explicitly stated, theories suggest it could be related to Grieff walking in on his wife having an affair, although this still does not explain the extreme act of decapitation. A possible explanation may be revealed in a future season of Inside Man.

Heist movies where teams of specialists played by big-name actors join forces in order to steal a fortune are a dime a dozen, but some films in the genre haven't received nearly enough recognition for how they build on the format. Everyone knows about the incredibly successful Ocean's Eleven franchise and Ant-Man and how well they follow the heist format, but since the genre came into its own through the '40s and '50s, there have been literally hundreds of heist movies and some deserve another look.

Hard to believe that a big star like Denzel Washington, who has an impressive filmography that features many audience favorites, only has been in one franchise in his career — The Equalizer series. Inside Man doesn’t count as the direct-to-Netflix sequel does not feature him. While the esteemed actor has starred in remakes, adaptations, and action movies prior, The Equalizer 2 became Washington’s first sequel. And now that The Equalizer 3 is on its way, this marks his first trilogy.
It’s been ten years since Washington would partner back up with the director of Training Day for his first go around as Robert McCall in 2014’s The Equalizer, based on the CBS television series that ran from 1985-1989. After having played him in three movies, the Academy Award-winning actor is finally ready to bid adieu to his first franchise. Empire reports on Washington’s conclusion of McCall’s story.

How do you come to terms with being pulled between the past and the present?
That's what Tom Hiddleston's Loki has to consider in the official trailer for Loki Season 2, premiering October 6 on Disney+.
"I'm being pulled through time, between the past and the present," the MCU veteran says.
"If what I saw is true, there's nothing that stands between this world and utter destruction."
The MCU has utilized the multiverse in the past, so there's a good chance we'll revisit that on Loki Season 2, assuming the world Loki and his friends live in isn't salvageable.
The trailer seemingly hints at Loki going up against He Who Remains (played by Jonathan Majors) and several other villains to protect the integrity of the timeline.
Sophia Di Martino is also back as Sylvie, alongside Owen Wilson (as Mobius), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Renslayer), Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15), Neil Ellice (Hunter D-90), Eugene Cordero...

I don't remember what the first R-rated film I ever saw was. I know it was fairly early on, probably around age eight or nine, and it was not some plan I'd concocted to see one or anything like that. Sometimes you just happen upon an R-rated film as a kid, and even though I had parents who were fairly protective about what I watched growing up, that kind of thing just happens. I do vividly remember the first R-rated film I saw in a theater was: "V for Vendetta." I was 12 years old, and I can still picture the bargaining conversation between my dad, my uncle, my two years older cousin, and I about seeing it opening weekend in March 2006. I got to go, and one week later, we had the same conversation about Spike Lee's "Inside Man," which I also successfully went to. After that, the guardrails were off.

"This is all I fight, brother." Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an action thriller film titled The Engineer, the latest from director Danny A. Abeckaser. This is yet another collab between Abeckaser and his writer Kosta Kondilopoulos - they also made I Love Us and this year's Inside Man previously. The film is a pulse-pounding action-thriller based on true events. It follows the biggest manhunt in the history of Israel to find Yahya Ayyash, the mastermind bombmaker who oversaw a group of suicide troops in Israel in the middle of the 1990s. Emile Hirsch stars as ex-Mossad agent Etan who leads an elite, covert team of agents and mercenaries to find the man responsible — the elusive "Engineer." The cast includes Tzahi Halevi, Angel Bonanni, Adam Haloon, Omer Hazan, and Yarden Toussia-Cohen. This looks terrible, even the performances. It just seems like more jingoistic cinema and Israeli propaganda. Can't recommend this.

"If I was gonna do it at all, I would have to do it right..." Vertical Ent. has revealed the official trailer for Inside Man, a mob thriller from actor / director Danny A. Abeckaser. Not to be confused with Spike Lee's awesome Inside Man, or Willem Dafoe's Inside from earlier in the year. Based on true events surrounding New York City's infamous Gambino crime family in the 60s & 70s. Emile Hirsch stars as a disgraced police detective, Bobby Belucci, who goes in undercover after a violent reaction to his wife's infidelity gets him in trouble. His plan to infiltrate the family's notorious DeMeo crew and get closer to the boss, Roy, sinks him deeper and deeper into the world of corruption and revenge. Also starring Jake Cannavale, Lucy Hale, Ashley Greene, Danny A. Abeckaser, Bo Dietl, and Vincent Laresca. Another derivative crime flick. // Continue Reading ›...

It’s almost impossible to escape once you get involved with the mob, and if I were Emile Hirsch‘s Bobby Belluci, I’d start learning how to swim with the fishes. Vertical Entertainment proudly presents an Inside Man trailer depicting a bloody tale of deception, dangerous liaisons, and a disturbing body count. Based on actual events, Inside Man tells the story of Bobby Belluci, a disgraced police detective seeking redemption by going undercover to expose a violent crime syndicate. However, as Bobby sinks deeper into the mob, the price for absolution may be higher than he can afford.

In 2022, Netflix released a serial killer drama starring Stanley Tucci called Inside Man, and critics had a lot to say about the series. Tucci stars in Inside Man as Jefferson Grieff, an ex-criminology professor on death row in an Arizona prison for murdering his wife. David Tennant co-stars as British vicar Harry Watling, who accepts an incriminating Usb drive from a troubled parishioner and ends up locking a woman in his basement to keep her from reporting it to the police. Grieff and the woman in Watling’s basement – Janice Fife (played by Dolly Wells) – cross paths in the most unexpected way.

Although Inside Man has a fairly linear storyline, its central heist presents many twists and turns that demand a detailed explanation. Directed by Spike Lee, Inside Man has a contemporary Robin Hood-esque narrative where a virtuous robber, Dalton Russell, not only sets out to rob a bank but also teach a lesson to a wicked business mogul. Serving one red herring after another, the heist movie misguides viewers from the opening scene itself and gradually builds up to a satisfyingly clever coda.
From the characters' moral compasses to a war crime from World War II, everything in the Spike Lee movie is meticulously tied down to the central heist. Owing to this, understanding Dalton's intention behind the heist and his modus operandi is essential for comprehending the multiple layers in Inside Man's narrative. Hence, here's a detailed breakdown of the Inside Man movie heist and how it weaves into...

“65” (Sony) and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery), both $19.99, were the sole new entries on VOD charts on an otherwise static week. However, three’s a trend: The new titles join last week’s “Creed III” in arriving on PVOD in 28 days or fewer after their theatrical releases.
As home-release strategies evolve, it’s clear that distributors love that lucrative PVOD revenue. At the same time, these charts reinforce the idea that playing in theaters elevates these titles.
“65” was a modest theatrical performer ($31 million in 31 days), but with its sci-fi genre and Adam Driver as the lead it can draw early home viewers. And since Sony doesn’t own a streamer, it has more incentive to maximize VOD.
“Shazam” sequel after 21 days is atypical for Wbd, especially for a DC title. After Wbd ended its disruptive same-day theatrical/HBO Max strategy, the studio said any theatrical...

Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”
The series from Lee Sung Jin premieres on April 6. See below for more titles coming to Netflix in April 2023.

Debuting in Tng's very first episode "Encounter At Farpoint," Troi was a half-human, half-Betazoid officer who primarily tended to the mental health of the ship's crew. Her Betazoid heritage also granted her empathic abilities, which made her a valuable asset when assessing the intentions of potential friends and foes; those abilities earned her a seat on the ship's bridge.
Troi was a difficult character for Tng's writers to crack, and she tended to either fade into the background or feature in tired romance plots in the show's early seasons. The character would eventually find a groove in later seasons, such as in the Tng season four episode "Family" where she helped Captain Jean-Luc Picard...
