Fresh off making history, becoming the first Latin American to win the best picture award at Sitges with highly acclaimed Shudder Original “When Evil Lurks,” Argentina’s Demián Rugna figures among writers of six finalist screenplays at Tinta Oscura 2023, presented by Blood Window and Argentine independent Del Toro Films.

Part of Ventana Sur, backed by Cannes Marché du Film and Argentina’s Incaa film-tv agency, Blood Window unspools over Nov. 27-Dec. 1 in Buenos Aires.

Further finalists, chosen from some 300 submissions, take in Mexico’s extraordinarily prolific and multi-prized horror writer Sandra Becerril (“Desde tu infierno”) and the Dominican Republic’s Junior Rosales. co-writer of Isaac Ezban’s “Evil Eye,” a B.O. hit.

Screenplays must be original and unpublished fantastic genre works, either horror or sci-fi stories. The winning script will be announced at Blood Window on Dec. 1. It will receive a $10,000 cash prize from Del Toro Films which will produce the title,...

When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.

Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

As we get ready to say goodbye to March, we have one last round of horror and sci-fi Blu-ray and DVD releases headed our way before the new month arrives, and this week’s assortment of titles is pretty damn great. Tragedy Girls is receiving a new Blu-ray release courtesy of those fine fiends over at Vinegar Syndrome, and they are also keeping busy with several other titles this week, too: Flesh for Frankenstein, Beware! Children at Play, and Sister, Sister.

Severin Films is also doing the dark lord’s work with all their amazing releases on tap for this Tuesday, including their 3-Disc Limited Edition set for House on the Edge of the Park, Ballad in Blood, and The Forbidden Door. And for those of you who dig shark-themed horror, you should definitely check out The Requin.

On The 3rd Day (Al Tercer Día) is the latest film from Argentinian filmmaker Daniel de la Vega whose other films include Necrophobia 3D and The White Coffin with which this shares a few thematic elements. Although not somewhere that comes to mind when you think of horror films, Argentina has a history of genre cinema that includes the grindhouse favourites The Curious Dr. Humpp and Snuff as well as more recent films such as Francesca and The Funeral Home.

Ventana Sur’s Blood Window Works in Progress sidebar, along with the event’s Screenings and project pitchings, have firmly cemented the annual event as one of the standout dates for genre cinema in Latin America and abroad. This year, six works in progress will screen as part a hybrid Ventana Sur market which will run Nov. 29 through Dec. 3.

The 2021 selection of works in progress can, in some ways, be seen as a return to form for the event. Over the past several years, the types of films screened in the section have diversified to include science fiction, fantasy and thriller propositions, in addition to the traditional horror flicks on which it was founded. For 2021, however, terror is the name of the game once again, with all six films self-defining as either horror, thriller or a combination of the two genres.

Also notable is the impressive spread of countries contributing to the section.

Chile’s Sanfic Industria, the industry section of the Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic), and Grupo Morbido, the Mexican horror conglomerate, have unveiled details for the 2021 Sanfic-Morbido industry events unspooling in early November, as well as a special poster designed by Chilean-Ecuadorian artist Alberto Montt to mark the occasion.

In August 2019, Sanfic and Grupo Morbido announced a collaborative venture which would see Grupo Morbido founder and CEO Pablo Guisa attend and participate in a dedicated genre project section at the South American festival. Later that year, the first ever Sanfic Morbido Fest prize was awarded to Pilar Díaz, producer of Florencia Dupont’s “Aracne.”

Their arrangement was expanded upon in February 2020, when the two organizations embarked on a joint horror initiative to promote and grow the genre cinema industry in Chile and South America at large. Like so many best laid plans at that time, however, arrangements were thrown into upheaval by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe’s ‘The Beta Test’ will open the festival.

US directors Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe’s feature The Beta Test will open the UK’s genre film festival Grimmfest which is running as a physical event in Manchester from October 7-10.

Cummings and McCabe will also star in the film about a Hollywood agent who gets sucked into a world of sexual infidelity and mysterious streams of digital data. Los Angeles based-Vanishing Angle produced the horror thriller. The feature initially premiered in the Berlin International Film Festival’s Encounters.

Quebec’s Fantasia Festival has unveiled the third and final wave of titles set to screen at this year’s 25th edition and announced that Takashi Miike’s latest feature “The Great Yokai War – Guardians,” will close the festival. The world premiere of Julien Knafo’s Quebec zombie flic “Brain Freeze” will open the festival following an Aug. 4 pre-fest screening of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad.”

“The Great Yokai War- Guardians” is the follow-up to Fantasia 2006 opener “The Great Yoki War,” and unspools in a fantasy world of Japanese demons, kaiju and pop culture references which proved a hit in Montreal the first time around.
