Sex on film is nothing new, and yet unsimulated intercourse in non-pornographic movies has raised eyebrows and drawn eyeballs for decades. From Vincent Gallo’s controversial directing for “The Brown Bunny” to Robert Pattinson’s masturbatory method acting in “Little Ashes,” genuine intimate encounters captured on film — however staged they may be — can pull audiences into the bigger stories their writers and directors are trying to tell.
Catherine Breillat’s first film in 1976, “A Real Young Girl,” adapts her own controversial novel about a 14-year-old exploring her newfound sexuality. Breillat’s later work, 1999’s “Romance,” tells the story of a woman desperately seeking human connection and featured similar scenes, including sadomasochistic sex play.
“Actors are prostitutes because they’re asked to play other feelings,” Breillat told IndieWire. “This prostitution is not profane; it’s a sacred act that we give them.”

Robert Pattinson was known for most of his career as “The guy from Twilight“. The fame he got from playing Edward Cullen in the film series overshadowed every other role. However, the film’s infamous reputation also cast an undeserved shadow on his career as people only knew him as ‘Twilight Boy’ for many years.

However, he has proven that he is more than just a charming vampire in recent years. Pattinson auditioned with many other actors for the role of Edward Cullen for the first Twilight film. The audition process required the actors to be shirtless at one instance as mandated by director Catherine Hardwicke. When a reluctant Pattinson did so, Hardwicke instantly wanted him to put his clothes back on.

One of the Spanish-speaking world’s biggest sales forces, Film Factory Entertainment has swooped on sales rights to thriller “Two” (“Duo”), directed by Mar Targarona and the latest production from top Spanish genre auteur producer Rodar y Rodar.
Producer of two milestone titles of Spain’s genre auteur scene – J.A Bayona’s “The Orphanage” and Guillem Morales’ “Julia’s Eyes,” Targarona has built her own directorial career on suspense thrillers that prove unexpected and unpredictable in tone and resolution, such as 2016’s “Boy Missing” and “The Photographer of Mauthausen” – part true-events inspired record, part edge-of-set entertainment – in particular drawing strong notices. “Two” looks no exception. Its singular premise sees two strangers, a man and a woman in their 30s, wake up in an unknown place, naked and glued to each other by their stomachs. They struggle to understand how and why they got there – becoming increasingly terrified as they discover clues and the truth emerges.

Philippa Goslett, the British filmmaker behind features Mary Magdalene and How To Talk To Girls At Parties, has taken over showrunning duties for HBO sci-fi drama The Nevers.
She replaces Joss Whedon, who exited the series in November, after he said that the physical challenges of making such a “huge” show was more than he could handle “without the work beginning to suffer”.
It marks Goslett’s first major television gig, having previously developed projects for FX, the BBC and Channel 4. Other film credits include Robert Pattinson-fronted Little Ashes.
She will also exec produce alongside Jane Espenson, Doug Petrie, Ilene S. Landress, Bernadette Caulfield. Whedon remains credited as creator and exec producer.
The drama, which follows a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world, will air later this year. It was handed a straight-to-series order...

The upcoming Joss Whedon HBO series “The Nevers” has selected Philippa Goslett as its new showrunner and executive producer.
Goslett takes over the role from Whedon, whose exit from the show was reported back in November. Whedon said in a statement at the time his departure was due to being unable to meet “the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic.”
“The Nevers” is still due to debut in 2021. According to an individual with knowledge of the production, production on the first season was interrupted by the pandemic, with the first half of the first season completing production in the U.K. in the fall. Goslett will oversee the second half of Season 1, which is currently in pre-production.
Goslett most recently wrote the 2018 feature “Mary Magdalene” starring Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tahar Rahim. Her other credits include “How to Talk to Girls at Parties,...

Philippa Goslett has been named the new showrunner of HBO’s upcoming sci-fi drama “The Nevers,” following the exit of series creator Joss Whedon late last year.
Starring Laura Donnelly, “The Nevers” was picked up straight-to-series in 2018 and was set to be Whedon’s first TV project since “Dollhouse,” which ran on Fox from 2009-2010. “The Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator exited “The Nevers” on Nov. 25.
“This year of unprecedented challenges has impacted my life and perspective in ways I could never have imagined, and while developing and producing ‘The Nevers’ has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer,” Whedon said in a statement at the time. “I am genuinely exhausted, and am stepping back to...

Appearing on the Joe Rogan Experience, Robert Downey Jr., who deftly turned the formerly mid-tier hero Iron Man into a household name over the course of nine films in ten years that culminated with this year’s record-breaking Avengers: Endgame, spent over an hour discussing his fascinating life and career, particularly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While reflecting on the transition of superhero fiction from campy amusement to serious cinema (the opinions of Martin Scorsese notwithstanding), the two briefly touched on another iconic superhero.
When asked how many different versions of the DC Comics mainstay Batman have appeared on-screen, Downey Jr.’s only response was: “I want to see what Pattinson does. I like that guy.” Downey and Pattison technically worked on the same project once, in the 2010 direct-to-video romance Love & Distrust, which consisted of five distinct short films, though they appeared in separate parts of the movie.

Philippa Goslett is the screenwriter of “Mary Magdalene,” the movie that looks at the life of Jesus from the perspective of his most famous contemporary female follower. The film stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim and is being released by IFC Films in the U.S. on Friday. Goslett’s previous work includes “Little Ashes,” with Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali, and Neil Gaiman adaptation “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” With severalnfilm and TV projects in the works, Goslett tells Variety about world-building and finding the viewpoint of the outsider.
How did the “Mary Magdalene” film come about?
The project originated with Katherine Bridle, head of development at See Saw, who very much wanted to tell stories about characters in history who have been marginalized or forgotten or, in Mary’s case, massively misrepresented over the years. There was a very beautiful script by...

Estimated £100m ($145m) of tax repayments claimed through fraudulent film investment scheme.
Four UK film executives have been found guilty of operating a fraudulent film investment scheme that was used to claim an estimated £100m ($145m) of tax repayments.
The men were found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court after they were shown to have falsely claimed to have invested £275m ($400m) in feature films and used offshore companies to hide their activities, the Financial Times reported on Friday.
The four executives comprise former Little Wing Films partners Charles Savill and Keith Hayley; Robert Bevan, a former co-director at film sales company Salt; and Monaco-based accountant and corporate services provider Norman Leighton.
More than 275 investors contributed more than £76m ($110m) to the scheme, according to Hm Revenue & Customs. The scheme used tax breaks to attract investment from footballers, investment bankers and a pop star.

Continuing the very-much-appreciated streak of doing seemingly whatever he wishes (translation: not playing a Marvel or Star Wars villain), Joaquin Phoenix has found a very promising set of collaborators for his next projects. The most concrete of these is a teaming with Jacques Audiard and John C. Reilly, who’ve already been set for the western The Sisters Brothers. [Deadline]
A previous report had informed us it’s an adaptation of Patrick deWitt‘s novel, which itself tracks two hired killers, Charlie and Eli Sisters, from Oregon to the Sierra Mountains while in search of a prospector, Herman Kermit Warm. This story is set around the California Gold Rush, and the encounters include, per Amazon, “a witch, a bear, a dead Indian, a parlor of drunken floozies, and a gang of murderous fur trappers.” Phoenix and Reilly in that together? Whatever you make of Audiard, there’s reason to be intrigued.

Being that some of us hold Rooney Mara as the closest thing to a modern-day Christ, it’s only fitting that she’d end up playing one of His closest compatriots. The acquisitions scene has been quiet in Toronto this year, though A24 has just nabbed one of the big pre-buys off the market with John Cameron Mitchell's "How to Talk to Girls at Parties." The film will unite Mitchell with Alex Sharp, Tony winner from Broadways "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," and once again with Nicole Kidman, Oscar-nominated for his 2010 drama "Rabbit Hole." Based on a story by cult author Neil Gaiman, who executive-produces alongside producers Howard Gertler and Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, "How to Talk to Girls" starts shooting in November. The film centers on a teen punk rocker, Enn, in 1970s suburban London who, with his two close friends, crash a party of otherworldly women they soon realize are actually aliens from another planet, and they have a malevolent plan in mind. Mitchell cowrote the script with Philippa Goslett ("Little Ashes") and,...

Michael Fassbender looks nothing like Steve Jobs: 7 actors who don't resemble real-life counterparts
Say what you like about Ashton Kutcher's Jobs movie, but it did hold one ace up its sleeve that the Danny Boyle-directed biopic doesn't - an actor who actually resembles the character they're playing.
We take a look at a handful of stars who don't look anything like the real-life people they played.
1. Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs
As brilliant an actor as the Shame star is, it's clear from the trailers for Danny Boyle's biopic that little has been done to make Fassbender look like the man he's portraying. Ashton Kutcher has him beat in that department (as does Noah Wyle if you go all the way back to Pirates of Silicon Valley), but with the talent involved here we're expecting Steve Jobs to be a cut above Jobs.

We take a look at a handful of stars who don't look anything like the real-life people they played.
1. Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs

Though she’ll be venturing to the small screen for HBO’s adaptation of Big Little Lies, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman is simultaneously lining up some very promising gigs in Hollywood. Today brings word that she’ll reteam with Rabbit Hole director John Cameron Mitchell for How to Talk to Girls at Parties, an adaptation of the Neil Gaiman short story.
Elle Fanning was already set to lead a cast that now also includes The Affair‘s Ruth Wilson and Matt Lucas (Alice in Wonderland). The strange-sounding project (I mean, this is Gaiman we’re talking about) will follow an alien tourist (Fanning) who breaks away from her tour group to explore the most dangerous place in the universe: the London suburb of Croydon, and a punk schoolboy who uses music and art as a way to escape the doldrums of his daily existence.

Robert Pattinson out of ‘Mission: Blacklist’ movie (photo: Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in ‘Life’) Robert Pattinson and Mission: Blacklist have parted ways. Pattinson, whose name had been attached to the project for two years — since Cannes 2012 — has reportedly dropped out due to scheduling issues. Now, what could those issues be? Well, Robert Pattinson, best known (at least for the time being) as the vampire Edward Cullen in the immensely popular Twilight movie franchise, has no less than two movies opening at Cannes 2014: David Michôd’s thriller The Rover, co-starring Guy Pearce, which will be shown as one of Cannes’ Midnight Screenings, and David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, also featuring Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, and Carrie Fisher, and which is in the running for the Palme d’Or. There’s more: Robert Pattinson has recently completed work on Anton Corbijn’s Life, with Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock,...

Robert Pattinson and David Cronenberg ‘Maps to the Stars’ gets German distribution, Toronto screening Starring Robert Pattinson, Julianne Moore, John Cusack, and Mia Wasikowska, Maps to the Stars has found a German distributor. Screen Daily reports that Christian Meinke’s Mfa+ has acquired the rights to the David Cronenberg-directed Hollywood satire at the American Film Market, recently held in Santa Monica. Mfa+ also picked up Vincent Grashaw’s feature debut Coldwater and Tobias Lindholm’s Danish thriller A Hijacking / Kapringen, which has a similar premise to that of the Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks hit Captain Phillips. (Photo: Robert Pattinson on the set of Maps to the Stars.) In Map to the Stars, John Cusack (replacing Viggo Mortensen) plays a Los Angeles analyst and self-help guru whose wife (Olivia Williams) is immersed in the career of their teen star son (Evan Bird), fresh off of rehab. Even the oh-so-sexy Robert Pattinson gets a little squeamish before a big sex scene. While speaking with Germany's Interview magazine, the Twilight heartthrob opened up about his 2009 flick Little Ashes, in which he played surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. The film chronicled a passionate love affair between the Spanish artist and poet Ferdico García Lorca (played by Javier Beltrán), and the 27-year-old actor recalls one particularly steamy scene where the pair got intimate in a pool. "The Dali production was the worst, it was mortifying," he confessed to the mag. "We were all hanging out by the pool, trying to loosen up. I was nervously clinging to the edge—and before I...

Pattinson fights Pearce in violent The Rover image In the last few years, British actor Robert Pattinson has courageously made a point of distancing himself (and his film career) from Edward Cullen, the Twilight movies' lovestruck, sparkling vampire that made the actor famous worldwide as one of the "angles" in the insufferable love triangle also featuring vampire-to-be Kristen Stewart and werewolf Taylor Lautner. Writer-director David Michôd's upcoming thriller The Rover, co-starring Guy Pearce, is Pattinson's latest tentative to create a character vastly different than the vampire Cullen. (Pictured above: Pattinson vs. Pearce in a bloody The Rover battle.) Currently filming in Australia, Michod's film is set in the near future, in the aftermath of a global financial catastrophe (at this stage, it remains unclear whether or not said catastrophe was the result of the recent highly controversial Cyprus bail-out). Pattinson plays a good-hearted Australian Outback gang member, while Pearce,...

Apart from his part in the indie film Little Ashes, Robert Pattinson's been graced with a lot of hunky roles. In Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, his Cedric Diggory was one of the most popular kids at Hogwarts, and his role as Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga was of course the dreamiest of the dreamy. But even his villainous roles - as in Bel Ami and David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis - allowed him to remain handsome as usual. David Michod and The Rover gang, however, are clearly dialing his looks way, way down for the Aussie flick. View slideshow: Robert Pattinson Today, photos of Pattinson on the set down under surfaced (see The Daily Mail, e.g.) which show Pattinson sporting a super busted set of chompers and a dingy costume. That sparkly smile of his muted, if anything. 'Cosmopolis' Photo credit: Alfama Films In the film,...

Six years later, it's shocking just how far pop culture has come in terms of normalizing gay characters and stories, and how much bolder the gay film audience has grown in demanding films that speak truthfully to their sexual experience (though, it must be said, the films that answer the call are usually decidedly outside of the mainstream). So we've decided to bring you an update to our foundational piece that looks at what has happened since. As a child who grew up in a home that loved horror, some of my earliest memories include vampires.
After all, I was born the same year The Lost Boys came out, and I remember seeing it on VHS when I was very young. Los Angeles — Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner have walked their last "Twilight" red carpet with the arrival this weekend of the series finale "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2." Now, they must step into careers of their own using the superstardom the multi-billion-dollar franchise has provided them.

Could a gay "Twilight" be in the works?
The idea of Edward Cullen engaging in a same-sex romance might break a few teenage girls' hearts, but that's exactly what series star Robert Pattinson hinted at during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres ahead of "Breaking Dawn Part 2," which is released Nov. 16. After co-star Taylor Lautner pointed out the blockbuster movies have now covered all four of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" books, Pattinson said he'd be willing to sign on for another installment -- with a twist.
"I was also thinking another way to do it would be to make it look like 'Will and Grace,' where Edward turns gay," Pattinson joked to DeGeneres. Still, don't exact sparks to fly between Edward (Pattinson) and teen werewolf Jacob (Lautner) anytime soon -- as Pattinson explained, Edward would "stay together" with Bella (Kristen Stewart) in his version.

Rob admits that, without 'Twilight,' he probably would have given up on acting in a newly-released interview! Read on for all the details. Robert Pattinson has become a global superstar by starring in the Twilight Saga as Edward Cullen, but, as he's admitted in a newly-released interview, he finds the role responsible for him having a career at all! Rob, 26, tells Greek newspaper To Vima, that he doubts he'd be an actor at all if the Twilight success hadn't befallen him. "I had filmed a few movies before Twilight, but I'm not even sure I would still be an actor if Twilight success hadn't occurred. David (Cronenberg) claims he liked my acting when he saw me in Little Ashes...I wasn't well paid before Twilight...When I was filming Little Ashes, I was completely broke. On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

Fans may have gotten all in a tizzy over Kristen Stewart's recent real-life indiscretions, but Robert Pattinson hasn't exactly been the most faithful soul either, at least cinematically.

Robert Pattinson perfected his Spanish accent for a film role by copying ex-Liverpool Football Club manager Rafa Benitez. The 'Twilight' actor says his accent when he played artist Salvador Dali was Spanish with a 'Scouse twang'. He said: 'It was an accent I learned from watching interviews with the manager of Liverpool Football Club - a Liverpudlian-Spanish accent, that's what I was doing.' New York — Robert Pattinson was nearing the end of shooting the last "Twilight" film, concluding a chapter of his life that had picked him out of near obscurity and was preparing to spit him out ... where exactly? "Twilight" had made him extravagantly famous, but his next steps were entirely uncertain.
"Out of the blue," he says, came the script for "Cosmopolis" from David Cronenberg, the revered Canadian director of psychological thrillers ("Videodrome," "Eastern Promises") that often pursue the spirit through the body. Pattinson, having never met or spoken to Cronenberg, did a little research: He looked him up on Rotten Tomatoes "and it was like 98 percent approval," he says.
"It was like: Ok, that's my next job," says Pattinson.
Pattinson now has the unenviable task of releasing his most ambitious movie, his most adult role, into a media storm that instinct would suggest should be run from like a pack of werewolves.

Imagine, if you will, a movie that takes place almost entirely in a stretch limousine, with the cameras trained directly on the main character. This is David Cronenberg's latest film, Cosmopolis, and if you didn't know already, it stars Twilight alumnus Robert Pattinson in the lead role.
At times dark, at times light(er), but all the time serious, Cosmopolis is a cerebral, dialogue-heavy take on Don DeLillo's book of the same name. With the limo serving as his corporate office, Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a youthful entrepreneur with money to burn and a desire for something more. For most of the film, Pattinson meets-and-greets with people in his limo/office -- it's a series of bizarre vignettes, with his daily visit from his doctor as one of the highlights.
Cosmopolis is a look inside a brilliant mind, but also a voyeuristic insight into what it might be like to lose it all.

That said, my opinion of "Bel Ami" should only hold water with fellow Twi-hards. Don't get angry with me for missing the dramatic undertones of French society in the 1880s. Even if I knew what to look for on that accord, I wasn't looking for it. I was only watching "Bel Ami" to see if Robert Pattinson accomplished what he set out to do with the role, which is to break away from the Edward Cullen typecasting.
R.Pattz didn't state that on record, but it's obvious, right? Because the movie is not great, but his character, Georges Duroy, is a far cry from any Pattinson has played before. Sure, he's still a total heartthrob (bedding half the women in...

Kristen Stewart as Marylou, On the Road poster Kristen Stewart plays Marylou, Dean Moriarty's girlfriend, in Walter Salles' film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's 1957 novel (actually written in 1951) On the Road. Moriarty is played by Tron: Legacy / Inside Llewyn Davis' Garrett Hedlund. While Dean Moriarty is a fictionalized version of Kerouac's intimate buddy Neal Cassady, Marylou is a representation of Cassady's first wife, LuAnne Henderson. In 1945, the 15-year-old Henderson married Cassady — who had sexual liaisons with both men and women; their marriage was annulled three years later. In addition to Stewart and Garrett Hedlund, On the Road features the following performers: Woman in Love / Brighton Rock's Sam Riley as Sal Paradise (a fictionalized Jack Kerouac), Waiting for Forever / Being Julia's Tom Sturridge as Carlo Marx (Allen Ginsberg), Man of Steel / The Muppets' Amy Adams, Eastern Promises / A History of Violence's Viggo Mortensen, Elysium / I Am Legend's Alice Braga,...

Oh, what won’t Robert Pattinson do for his craft? He’s braved some terrible Pacific Northwest weather for Twilight, given up junk food for those Breaking Dawn honeymoon scenes, wore that ridiculous Dali mustache for Little Ashes and now, thanks to a new clip on MTV, we see the ultimate sacrifice he made for Bel Ami: He wore the world’s most unflattering pair of long underwear. We see why this was necessary, of course. RPattz is playing a young man in 19th century Paris who uses sex to climb out of his peasant status and into high society. We’re not historians, but we’re pretty sure there was no such thing as boxer-briefs or ab workouts in 19th century Paris. Elastic was invented in the mid-1800s but was a long way from working its way into waistbands. And we are wasting lots of words here...

Given Salvador Dali's unique style and reputation for oddness, it’s not really surprising that there would be more than one film out there about legendary surrealist. But while some (including Little Ashes with Robert Pattinson as the artist as a young man) have come and gone, none have had the official stamp of the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation. Until now, that is. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer is the man setting up a new biopic.Writer Paige Cameron pitched an idea for chronicling Dali’s life that got Grazer excited and he’s hired her to bash out the script. And with the Dali Foundation aboard, she’ll have access to archives and private letters to tell the story of his life, work and occasionally stormy marriage to wife Gala.“The Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation’s interest in a biographical film has always been limited to one that would involve an A-list team,...
